On my fourth iPhone 4 now. Sort of hilarious all the random issues that they'll swap out the entire phone for. Can't complain considering it's free.

1st: Power button sunk into unit.
2nd: Home button issues and lamping of the backlight at the top.
3rd: Home button became depressed in unit.

What the fuck? Maybe you're doing it wrong? I can't imagine the home button malfunctioning so badly phone after phone. My iPhone 4 hasn't had a single issues since launch.

Home buttons are made for thumbs, not talons.

I got a 3G iphone with a cracked screen from my brother. It worked perfectly aside from the broken glass.

I ordered the replacement kit and installed everything as per instructions on the guide at ifixit.com. Now the bottom have of the screen is unresponsive. When I have the ipod on and the case open I can mash down the #2 wire and can get the slider to move about halfway across the screen.

Anybody have any ideas on how to resolve this?

Yay, got my O2 sim card working on my US iPhone 4 today using the gevey sim tray. Didn't really want to jailbreak it and almost ended up buying a new UK version since I couldn't get the sim to work initially.

I plan on picking up a Verizon Iphone 4 out of contract, any idea what type of price I could expect to get if I wait for the Iphone 5 to be released?

can anyone recommend a protective case.I need something that covers the screen.Id prefer one that you can slide the iphone into but Id also take one with a cover that goes over the front. There are so many online some look cheap so I thought I'd ask for some opinions.

*shrug*

The power button getting sunk into the slot is sort of common. So are home button issues. The first time was it not registering two/three clicks properly. But the main problem with that unit was how bad the backlight lamping looked. First generation MacBook Pro bad.

This latest issue was totally random. I have no idea what happened. I woke up and checked my phone, and I realize the home button had dipped into the unit pretty severely.

Honestly, it was a stupid question. That's cool that they'll swap it out that many times though.
No worries. Honestly, an underrated advantage of the iPhone is the fact that you have Apple Stores to go to for any issues. Being able to just walk in and out with a new unit is so damn convenient. I can only imagine repairs for any other manufacturer involve mailing the unit back in.

Otterbox makes a case called the Defender. It's the most durable case on the market. The iPhone can withstand a hellava pounding when it's inside one of these cases. It has a thin jell filled screen covering that is very responsive. However, the case takes away the pleasing ascetics of the iPhone, making it weigh almost twice as much and very bulky.

I have no idea what your question is?

So I will answer a few possible scenarios? :P

If you wait till the iPhone 5 and are elligible for upgrade it will only be like $200 or $300 most likely w/ a new 2 yr agreement. (We don't know the prices yet but historically its around here)

If you do it out of contract it will be like $650+ probably.

Pretty much the same with the iPhone 4 you are getting now since no price drops have really occurred. You can always sell your iPhone 4 that you buy now though to help reduce that iPhone 5 cost to only about $200 since the iPhone 4 can probably be sold for $350-400 I bet when the iPhone 5 launches and you will still have a warranty on the 4 which is a nice selling point.

I'm really ticked we haven't had a photo (legit) leak of the iPhone 5. I'm waiting for it but GD is it hard. Can't wait to kick my 3GS to the curb.

I hope Apple is expanding their Apple stores nationwide. There isn't one near me but it would be nice if there was.

I like this mockup:

^ Yeah I've seen that one. I'm hopeful that it is an even more refined 4. The one thing I hate about the 4 is the weight which it seems like they are going to remedy with the new one.

So rumors of a 3.7 inch screen...would that make that big of a difference? Seems like you would go for a 4 or something. But then the ppi might be screwed so...

Oh cool is that a Samsung Galaxy S?

When you are entering text how do you move to the next line? What is the iPhone equivalent of the Enter button? I've tried touching empty space when posting on GAF for example but it does nothing.

The return button on the keyboard should work.

Sorry, if problems just keep staking up in this thread but I just got one weird ass problem with my iPhone 4.

Someone called me earlier, and I doubt it was a genuinely human. There were no voices whatsoever that replied but rather only a long strings of familiar sounds, like machinery running and such. After seeing that no one was ready to talk, I hung up. 5 seconds later, my phone's screen went black and it began vibrating for no reason. It last one hour until I was finally able to restart by holding the home button and the power button. Could it potentially have been the result of some virus or something ? Thanks in advance for further enlightment.

I like this, but I'd want the black on the front to stretch from edge-to-edge. That chunky silver outer bezel just looks stupid to me.

I reckon I'll be keeping the 4 unless the 5 is visually identical and functionally superior.

I hate apple for pushing the release back!!! I hate them, it's hurting me having to live with this old 3Gs. lolol I salivated over my g/f's new EVO last week but after more time with fooling it, I love my iPhone. lol It's just so uncivilized in comparison. lmao

Be happy you have a 3GS. A friend of mine fiending for the upcoming refresh has a 3G.

it's okay to have bad taste and prefer a botched 3GS over the far superior iPhone 4.

lol at the green light on the front. what a hack.

God, the mockup is hideous. We finally got away from that god-awful chrome bezel and someone wants it back? /shudder

Who knows why. People have no taste. That's why Apple doesn't do focus groups.

After being in the iPhone camp for so long, and waiting for the next iPhone (I have a 3GS), I decided to jump ship to the Windows Phone camp.

The HTC HD7S is what I'll be getting tomorrow. Sorry Apple, you snooze, you lose.

There's practically zero chance apple will bring the bezel back. If anything the space between the screen and the physical sides of the phone will shrink thanks to a bigger screen. Weight of Iphone 4 is actually 1 gram less than 3GS, no?

Any advice on an unresponsive 3GS home button? 1-2/10 presses result in no reaction.
Dust buildup under the button. I had that on my iphone 4 and they replaced the whole phone. I looked at how difficult it would be to fix it on my own - looked like a 100 step nightmare.

So....you're bought a new phone, why not just get the iPhone 4? How much money did you lose on apps because of the switch? Would it have killed you when the iPhone 5 came out to not have it?

Well nothing yet, I'm not getting it until tomorrow. And the only apps I use regularly on my iPhone are Twitter, Facebook, email, stuff like that. Which Windows Phone all does.

I didn't want the iPhone 4, because why would I get that when I could get the HD7S with a bigger screen, and in my opinion a nicer looking OS?

And yes, it would have killed me.

Aside from a very few, I don't loss of apps a compelling reason to stick with iPhone should I change in the future. Most of the games are 99 cent throw away entertainment to me.

I've been with iOS since the first iPhone, and at this point it would be a huge loss to me to switch platforms, I've bought tons and tons of apps. Even with most of them being cheap, that's three years of buying stuff.

I'm pretty much locked into the iOS forever.

Well you won't have to worry about there being too much with WP7.

WP has 25,000 apps. That's plenty. Especially only about 200 are worth looking at on both it and the iPhone App Store.

I've been using iOS since 2007. I'm just bored with it. I'm getting the feeling with my new phone as I didn't when the original iPhone came out.

Yup, me too. I have too many apps that I couldn't live without and the games selection elsewhere is either dire or overpriced. As long as they keep knocking out killer phones, I'm not bothered about feeling 'locked in'.

You'd think that's true but it's not. When I moved from iOS to Android, I thought the same thing. It's not the case. The quality of apps is far, far superior on iOS.

I don't regret my decision to switch, though, because I get bored with OSes quickly. Some people are okay with no variety in their lives. I, on the other hand, love change.

Feeling "locked in" to an OS is a pretty stupid reason to stick with a phone, IMO. Fortunately, it's the iPhone so it's still the best one out there. You're locked in a paradise.

Speaking for myself, I'm not locked into an OS, I'm locked into the software that runs on that OS. If my iOS apps would run on Android and Android would run on the iPhone 4 hardware, I'd give it some consideration.

I think that WP might have better quality apps, if only because it has the Metro UI to rely on. Kind of like on the iPhone. A good looking app will cohere to the same UI style as the phone.

I think Apple has been very shrewd about this lock-in idea. I feel kinda silly for being as dependent upon their infrastructure as I am now. I know that to switch platforms, the destination platform would have to perfectly duplicate and import:

1. iTunes - Both shopping and importing music, tagging and rating, and allowing me to go out and buy movies that have digital copies will work with all of my devices by sticking in the disc and putting in a single code.
2. App Store - An answer to every productivity app that I own and a demonstrated support history for each.
3. iPhoto - face mapping, rating, geotagging, smart albums (show me photos of just kid A at Disneyworld without having had to explicitly input that data) and seemless syncing to each device (based upon smart albums).
4. iBooks - This is Apple's weakest pillar by far, but I've got a sizeable iBook inventory now, and the kids love the iPad.
5. Backup - Demonstrated and supported ability to effortlessly backup all data and be able to retrieve it from device to device... (and by extension, some analog to my Time Capsule)
6. iCloud - I am going to get 10 times more locked in if/when developers adopt iCloud API. If they can get the game/document syncing working across all devices like it does in the beta (i.e. Play a round in Plants vs. Zombies while I'm out, and when I play it at home on the iPad, it picks up where I left off). Who knows if this will take off.

I know that analogs exist for every single one of these bullet points, but to date, I don't think that they all work as seemlessly as it seems to work in the iOS ecosystem. Plus, the new system will have to do this with two different accounts and 4 different sets of devices for the family.

There is no actual difference in what you are saying here, unless you mean that there are apps that you MUST OWN that are only on iOS, and that group is shrinking rapidly.

I'm with BboyAJ, I get bored with interfaces, and iOS is certainly the most boring one. Just an app launcher, which is fine by most people, but not me. I also had the same experience about the quality of apps when switching to Android, but even that is changing rapidly. Android apps are becoming increasingly awesome in their own right, and WP7 apps are very polished for such a young OS, because the Metro UI provides a lot of guidance that devs are taking advantage of for the most part. The huge gap that once was in app quality is closing as well.

I also had (and have) a ton of apps, digital copies, etc. on iOS that I walked away from. I thought it would be much more difficult than it ended up being. I haven't once thought about any of that stuff I left behind. Then when I switched away from Android, I had the same situation (though not as much as iOS). It never once bothered me, although I keep an Android phone as a backup for me and my wife. I may pick up an iPad at some point to make use of the apps on iOS, or I may not. I'm not going to be held down by sunk costs if I feel there is a better experience out there. At the same time, I do understand if some DO take into account the purchases they've made, especially if they still love the iOS interface and devices. It's a no brainer.

I have a 3G, too. I'm hurting for a new phone, but I'm also terrified that Apple will pull something similar to the "you can only buy an iPhone 4 if you're six months from the end of your contract" stunt when the new phones come out.
