The iPhone 4 |OT|

It was the first day of class today and I felt like a dinosaur pulling out my ancient phone. Figure I have waited long enough, so I ordered a 16GB Verizon iPhone4 which arrives tomorrow. I was due for an upgrade so I saved a few bucks. Overall it was much less than I expected to be paying.

Seriously can't wait to dig into this sucker and see what it does. After being disappointed with a piece of shit Blackberry a year or two ago, I wasn't sure I even needed a smartphone. But I really feel like I have been missing out by not having one of these.

One of the few? I thought everyone loved the aesthetic and feel of the 4?

They can obviously improve on the technical stuff (higher res, bigger screen, fix resolution, etc.), but the form factor is perfect.

8 times out of 10, to me, Apple comes out with a new design iteration in a product line, and the design blows me away with how it instantly makes the previous model, which the day before was so awesome, seem like an ancient relic. I really don't know how they do it. Even when the alterations are minor, such as the various iPod designs, they seem like a good step forward.

There's a few times that I think they could've done better, though. My thoughts over the years:

iMac: I wasn't paying much attention to this back in the day, other than they were 'weird' computers. The plastic LCD iMac was a revolutionary all-in-one design, but I didn't like it all that much, but when they moved to the aluminium, my jaw just dropped.

iBook->MacBook: So modern looking. Not enamoured by the now defunct-unibody plastic MacBook though.

PowerBook->MacBook Pro. Unibody is just amazing from an engineering and design stand point. I do have a soft spot for the most recent non-unibodies, however - they are a bit more timeless.

MacBook Air: Amazing.

iPod Shuffle: I liked all the designs, but thought the clip ones with the click-wheel, while better functionally, to be a bit boring, if clever.

iPod: Each iteration kept up with the times in design and materials. The line became really nice looking devices.

iPod Nano: The iPod nano fat was an oddity. I actually kinda liked it, but it wasn't a leap forward in design. The touchscreen one is weird, but nicely designed.

iPod Touch: I actually prefer the 1st gen, where it was more flat overall.

iPhone: I actually don't like the iPhone 3G that much. It did seem more modern at the time, but the design has aged poorly.

I would otherwise say I like the iPhone 4 design (industrial design-wise, it's amazing), but without having seen what an iPhone 5 redesign is like, I don't want to comment on whether I prefer to keep the iPhone 4 design.

It's gorgeous, but I still say it feels terrible in hand. Corners suck!

When I held my friend's 3GS in hand, it felt like a toy.

I love 4's design. Slick, flat at the back, metal and glass with sharp corners?

Fuck yes.

Those roundabout designs were the things that kept me from buying iPhone eariler. In my opinion iPod touch 1G still looks the best, but iPhone 4 is quite close to it.

You keep talking about looks, but that isn't all that matters. You even say sharp corners. Now, I'm not saying I got bruises and cuts on my hand, but can you really say it is comfortable to hold?

I'm hoping for a redesign. Looks aside, the glass back got fine scratches easily which sucked since the phone has to sit on surfaces somehow (I hate covering my precious devices).

Not sure where to put this but what are the major differences between ATT and Verizon??

My contract is up and im moving to either of these two cellphone companies for an Iphone and want to know who to go with.

The prices for both companies are about in the same range so I am looking for user experiences, mainly things like who has better indoor reception and better signal while traveling.

Where AT&T has 3G the speeds are much faster. For traveling across the country, Verizon's coverage is better.

The AT&T version is also international.

I'm leaving the country for the first time ever (Cancun) and am wondering if I'll be able to get data/cell coverage. Am I correct in assuming that I should sign up for international calling for 1 month? I have ATT.

you do not want to enable data coverage (roaming) fees will be out of this world. (iPhone has data roaming turned off by default so you should be safe)

you will probably need to call AT&T and enable voice roaming with whatever Mexican cell provider is down there.

iPhones come with the world traveler package (whatever it's called, the cheaper rates) so I'm not sure anything needs to be done for it to work down there. I've never tried though, might as well call them.

Apple currently plans to start pre-orders for next iPhone on Sept. 30, launch Oct. 7

Pre-orders for the new iPhone starting in late September will also mean that Apple’s fall event will take place in September;
Pre-orders for the new iPhone starting in late September will also mean that Apple’s fall event will take place in September; which would seem to counter NewsCorp’s Kara Swisher’s combative insistence of an October iPhone 5 event.

How many folks here would preorder the next iPhone without seeing it?

The V3xx? Fuckin' loved that phone. Built like a tank. If I dropped and shattered my iPhone today I'd go back to my V3xx without qualms.
Yes sir. Still works wonderfully. And it's slick as hell. But it's time for a smart phone haha

My 3gs crapped out on me yesterday after 2.5 years of abuse. I had to pay for a ip4. Its beautiful. I just wish my 3gs could have lasted till Oct. A ATT business sales rep told me Iphone 5 first week of October. :(

While he's probably in the right ballpark, understand that those people don't know any more than you (because if they did, they would clearly blab about it).

I'm going to Europe (live in Canada) in a few weeks. I hear that it is cheaper to get a chip and a plan there than it is to upgrade your current plan for overseas. Is that the case for Iphone 4 (not jailbreaked).

Odds that Apple doesn't change the screen size for iPhone 5? I have Sprint and can see myself getting the new iPhone but 3.5" wont cut it.

I'd say pretty decent odds at this point. Either way you'll end up waiting and seeing so I guess we'll see.

edit: I mean decent they DO change it.

Time for some silly questions:

I have had my iPhone 4 for months now, and my wife is thinking of getting one soon. We both already have separate iTunes accounts from before we were married, and our music purchases are separate already.

I told her if she gets a phone it would be best to just use the one account so we dont buy apps twice if we both want to use them. My main concern with that is the syncing of iCloud stuff soon like calendars and whatnot.

Are there any kind of issues that sharing an account on two phones would bring?

Even if you have different accounts, you can share music, apps, etc with her and vice-versa through iTunes home sharing. It's great and helps avoiding potential headaches of having just one account for both.

I know this has been asked dozens of times, but is there a clear sanctioned way of syncing over an iPhone to a NEW PC, with the main point to preserving the app data and settings, rather than the media itself?

What are you SUPPOSED to do, say, if your computer crashes, or it gets stolen?

I know that if you authorise a new PC with your iTunes account, you might get the option to transfer purchases from a connected devicebut does that initiate a backup sync? Or do youjustdo a backup sync at that point? And then just sync after?

Knew we could share music and movies with home sharing, but was not sure about the apps. Thank you.

No problem and yeah, it's great. You can also just sign in on your device and computer with her account (and vice-versa of course) and download for free the apps she bought, directly from the app store. As long as the devices are properly authorized, they can hold stuff from multiple accounts.

@mrkgoo should that happen, you just do what you said. You authorize the new computer with your account(s) prior to plug in the iPhone, and then when you connect your phone you'll be prompted to transfer your apps to the computer. If the computer isn't authorized there will be a warning that it will erase them from the phone.

After that transfer, yeah I think it backs up and syncs (which will delete your media) and that's it.

Thanks! A friend was getting a new comp. For me, I normally just restore my computer to the new one and just continue on as if nothing happened. Thanks again.

'iPhone 4S' Casing Resembles iPhone 4 with Some Antenna Changes

ip4sq8pk.jpeg

The mid-frame images above show that this so-called iPhone 4S will have two antenna breaks at the bottom of the casing. This differs from both the AT&T (GSM) iPhone 4 and Verizon (CDMA) iPhone 4. In AT&T's iPhone, the antenna breaks are in two spots, along the lower left side and top left sides. On the Verizon's model they are both at the top sides of the casing.

The reason for the movement of the antenna breaks is to accommodate different frequencies of the different mobile technologies. This "iPhone 4S" appears to have a slot for a SIM card, suggesting that at a minimum it will support the GSM standard like the original AT&T iPhone 4. It is believed the iPhone 5 will support both GSM and CDMA, but we haven't heard anything definitive about the band support for this iPhone 4S.

What are we looking at here? Are those two separate (CDMA on the left and GSM on the right) antenna designs for the iPhone "4S?" If yes doesn't that mean the iPhone will remain on Verizon and AT&T like the previous iPhone 4? I'm assuming Verizon and Sprint don't use the same type of CDMA...

I think it's one frame--front and back.

Im in the same boat except it was a 3GS and got it 2nd hand for cheap.
Been using a Google G1 since 2007, its sturdy and works but its so goddamn slow the only thing I like about it is the keyboard. Going to take some getting used to after four years of that!
I was going to hold out till i5 but to get a almost brand new 3GS with 600mins,unlimited internet and texts for 12 months for £280 was too much of a bargain to pass!

Im assuming there is a Gmail app right?

Hi guys,

Is there a decent (and free, ad supported) alternative to Last.fm?

I love that it recommends tracks similar to what you like, and its super handy to have on my phone for the times when I don't have my iPod Classic with me.

Probably listen to it twice a month, so can't justify the Last.fm subscription unfortunately :( Thanks!

Pandora?

Question on the iphone preordering. Will Apple do this themselves or can you preorder through your service provider? I am up for a new contract with Verizon and want to make sure I get the same price they offer.
