I didn't see it posted.. Did you watch the actual video? Its not just the trailer.
My mistake, I apologize. They just labeled the video wrong. They need to add something like "IGN Analyzes" to it.

Anyone find a translation of the Famitsu interview? Issun23, any luck?

I was working on it, but everything seems to be covered in 1UP's report. I saw a bit about the soldiers though which I haven't seen talked about anywhere else. The soldiers in the game appear to have something mysterious about them, like how the enemies in ICO were made out of smoke and they turned out to (ICO spoiler incoming)
be relatives of the boy.

I did a write-up of the interview myself a couple days ago, it covers the most interesting bits:

The tale of the giant man-devouring eagle Toriko
Fumito Ueda presents his newest game, The Last Guardian

After Shadow of the Colossus hit shelves back in 2005, a shroud of mystery was placed on the small team at JAPAN Studio responsible for two of the greatest masterpieces of the old generation. Fumito Ueda and his team have kept quiet on their workings for four years, until today.

A fantastic trailer of nearly five minutes shows us what the best team at JAPAN Studio has prepared to unleash on PlayStation 3. And while "unleash" might be a strange word to describe a game being revealed it could not be more appropriate than this case.

The Last Guardian, or "The giant man-devouring eagle Toriko," like it is known in Japan, tells of a very unusual story of friendship. A boy bearing strange marks all over his body makes the acquaintance of a giant creature unlike anything you've ever seen on your TV. The owner of feathers and bird-like limbs but a feline face, Toriko is a mixture of creatures.

"We knew we could create a natural looking and moving animal in a game. We did it with Agro in Shadow of the Colossus. But when you're familiar with a particular animal, say a cat, you'd notice any little abnormality it will display on screen. You can notice it because you can compare what you're seeing with what you have at home.

To avoid this problem, we decided to create an entirely new creature - a creature that is an amalgamation of many different animals. The team and I refer to it as Oowashi (Giant Eagle) but it has little like an eagle ignoring the feathers and tiny wings!"

This amalgamation, like Ueda calls it, looks too weird at first. We were very surprised by its look when we watched the trailer the first time. We are not alone as Ueda admits:

"Even I find it weird-looking, to tell you the truth. But creating something that cannot be recognised as an existent animal is what we were trying to do in the first place. We want to create something strange but having it move and behave naturally."

After the shock of seeing the creature, we set our eyes on its companion - a young boy wearing familiar-looking robes and adorned with marks all over his body. It's an unlikely duo, but fate brings them together.

"You could think that the relationship between the boy and Oowashi is very like the one between Wander and Agro in Shadow of the Colossus. You'd be right in a way, because the first thing we wanted to do with our new game was to make that kind of relationship the very heart of it."

As soon as Ueda compares Oowashi to Agro we can't help think there's something very, very different between the two.

"Even though the relationship aspect might start off familiar, as soon as you get that controller in your hands you realize it's a completely new type of relationship. Oowashi is not your loyal animal friend that your character spent countless days interacting with before the game even starts. Agro was already a very amicable partner at the beginning of Shadow of the Colossus. You'd whistle for him and he'd come in a few seconds, obeying your every command. Oowashi is not like that. The bond between you and him is not very developed as the duo have met for the first time very recently. You might have some difficulty even to grab its attention, perhaps needing to throw something at it to make it look at you. You'll need to learn the pattern of its behaviour, which unlike Agro's is very complex. Getting used to these patterns and then using them to your advantage will be the key to success."

Asked to give an example of such a case Ueda quickly gave us a simple description:

"Say you're in a situation where you need Oowashi to stay still in order to proceed. It might not be simple because he has the habit of moving around. This creature is not trained. It is smart but not accustomed to humans and their whims."

We tried to imagine ways how this relationship could develop to one similar to Agro and Wander's from Shadow of the Colossus. Ueda hinted at possible interactions between you and the creature:

"You can feed it, and take out those nasty spears your enemies used against it. You can touch it in different places, and each will present a different outcome. You're free to interact with Oowashi at any given time, but as it might become a chore for the player to take care of all these things all the time, we're trying to find just the right balance."

We then asked Ueda what other important themes can we find throughout the game.

"All animals are surrounded by a veil of mystery. You never really know what your cat is thinking. This is one of the reasons why we decided to make animals one of the central themes of our game. We opted for a theme full of character."

We had time for just one question so we decided to ask what will be so different in this game compared to ICO and Shadow of the Colossus:

"We have learned much about AI thanks to the our work on ICO, and we then explored how different things and characters can interact with each other in Shadow of the Colossus. With The Last Guardian, we're taking these two facets of gameplay, combining them together and bringing them to a whole new level, allowing us to create a truly living and breathing world, even surpassing our first two games."

Is that actually possible. Head Explode imminent.

Well, each screen in that trailer was filled with butterflies, flies, pollen, dirt, moving grass, tree branches and leaves, all affected by wind... I guess they can.

Most likely they did. At least a company / service they were using did.

That was all lies to make them lose customers.
Lies my ass.

Almost everyone I know who ordered something from ShopTo in January or February, got their credit card charged with all kinds of dubious stuff, the following months. Some as recently as last week.
And of course vice versa. Everyone who got the fraud thing, tracked it down to an order from ShopTo. That was the only link.

The money went to anything from random shops in the UK and Spain, to Unibet and Betfair to Easyjet and even Unicef. Up to €4000 in a case. Both VISA and MasterCard.

I still want to know what he means when he says they are making animals the focus of the game. That means there could be other creatures important to the story:)

I don't really think the original was a target? Wasn't that actual test footage? Either way the right one looks more complete especially the lighting and vegetation. It appears like a lot of minor surrounding asthetic tweaks have taken place, just subtle thing like vegetation on the walls, and how it reacts to wind. Also the "guardian" so to speak looks better all around. Definitely looks incredible, such a creative idea.

Although it’s scant, we were able to grab some new details concerning this highly anticipated title that’ll surely raise the bar to uncharted heights again. In the upcoming September issue of Playstation The Official Magazine, information about the storyline and characters were divulged.

The game being the third from Team ICO, will center on the evolving relationship between a boy and his large mythical creature, (we already knew that), that creature is called “Trico” in the Japanese version. At first the creature will be hostile towards the boy, but as the boy cares for the creature, cleaning it, playing with it and feeding it, that relationship, or bond will grow.

Overtime, the boy will use the creature to solve platforming puzzles, but the creature is alive and acts naturally, as if it were a real animal. Persuading it to do what you need will take patience and guile, not force.

Be sure to pick up the magazine on store shelves everywhere for some more details concerning The Last Guardian. The game will utilize a physics engine, which is a first for the ICO Team, so don’t be surprised if you’re left in awe by the graphics that will be rendered. According to PTOM, even those feathers you see in that image will individually ruffle in the wind.

Just mind blowing is my conclusion on this one, Team ICO has never disappoint; and by the looks of things, The Last Guardian will again be, one for the history books.

And on the sixth day the LORD David Bowie created man and woman in His image. And he saw that it was good. On the seventh day the LORD created videogames so that He might take the bloody day off for once.

Forcing you to persuade the creature to do stuff could be either the greatest thing ever or the most annoying thing ever.
That's what I was thinking.

I wouldn't really worry about it. This is the same team that managed to build a beloved game around an escort mission. And there are few gameplay types that people hate more than that.

I think it could be interesting for some of the puzzles solving scenarios. If the creature is refusing to do something in particular, it might not be because it doesn't want to, but because it's unable to help you physically, which would lead to exploring other methods of progression. The fun in that lies between discovering whether or not the creature is required for the puzzle.

Thats cool, but some things I like better in the older trailer. The sunset where the boy climbs the griffinowy looks so awesome in the target and I personally like the design of the animal better. Maybe its because I saw it first, I dont know. Also the water and the way the sun gleems through the animal when hes on the ledge looks really cool in the target.

Those are just specific things though, the end result is MUCH more cohesive and pleasing imo.

Anyone else thinks we might see something about it at Gamecon? This is like Sony's second E3.

I think they'd leave it till TGS. GT5 will be the major thing at GC I guess, they'll also probably show U2, the next R&C, Heavy Rain, maybe a little GoW3. But I'd love a new trailer, or even better, a little gameplay video.

Probably not? I don't think they have anything new to show, since it's pretty clear it won't be out this year.

Press were shown some more footage of the game at E3. One bit had the boy pull out arrows off the beast, another showed it gobbling guards. I guess that's where the Japanese name of the game comes from (The man-eating giant eagle Toriko).

Oh, this footage wasn't recorded.

I never had a change to comment in this thread but now I can finally declare, this will be the game of forever! I am so in love with griffon, when trailer was released for several days I was calling my cat griffon, though I liked old creature more than new one :(

No info over this at gamecon... now I'm sad.

Hang him. This is the second time I have come clawing into this topic expecting news. Next time just say that out loud in your own room, DO NOT TROUBLE US WITH YOUR EMPTY MUSINGS, BOY!

This is one of those games that definitely isn't going to the public again until TGS (there's a possibility of some behind closed doors stuff at gamescom). TGS isn't too far away anyway. So the wait isn't so long.

You know, even though I'll most likely lick every little detail they'll share with us before releasing the game, I wish they'll leave enough out of articles/previews to surprise us.

The constant hammering rumour that there's another giant creature hidden in the game doesn't really help.
