The Legend of Zelda: Tri Force Heroes Review Thread

I think 2011 was the worst year for Nintendo. Sure, it had two huge titles (Skyward and Mario Kart 7) but literally nothing else. This year, we got two big titles (Splatoon and Mario Maker) and a handful of pretty good ones. It's still a bad year, imo, but not as bad as 2011.

Splatoon is my GOTY, though. So there's that.

2011 also had OoT 3D, Star Fox 64 3D, and 3D Land. I'd say it was a better year than 2015 overall.

Do I need to replay dungeons in local multiplayer to unlock new ones? How important is the crafting aspect?

I'm not interested in collecting materials or crafting costumes and replaying dungeons sounds like a bore. I just want a great local multiplayer game with straight dungeon progression. The time I'll be able to play with two friends will be limited anyway, so I don't care if it's short as long as it's fun. Will TFH deliver on that?

Levels unlock in single or multiplayer and are available in both modes. Crafting is important, but not essential, you can perfectly finish the game without making any gear, although it makes it less interesting.

2011 gave us Xenoblade Chronicles.

In less than two months, Xenoblade Chronicles X will be released.

Say what you will, but I don't think the Zelda formula really lends itself to multiplayer. This game looked pretty shallow already when they announced it. But I also never liked Four Swords...

Well since the thread now is about anything but triforce heroes reviews...wasn't 2008 also a pretty bad year? All I remember is that they had Brawl and Mario Kart going for them on the Wii. On the DS, no idea. Probably crickets if it weren't for Square.

Looking at the release calendar, yeah that year was basically non-existent. Biggest Wii release for nintendo in the latter half of the year was Animal Crossing: City Folk, and I can't even find a big DS game.

Huge fan of Zelda, have bought all zelda games since Twilight Princess day one. Unfortunately I don't see the appeal of a multiplayer zelda game will skip this. On a side note I played and hated Four Swords. Why couldn't they just make another single player traditional zelda game=(

Not surprised at all. Played the demo and was infinitely frustrated with the lack of communication and clueless players online. I wish they had just ported another Zelda or done a Zelda collection instead.

3D Land? Pokemon Black and White?

2011 > 2015

Let's assume for a moment that the NX console launches in 2016. I think the GameCube's lineup is the best, while the Wii U and Wii are both equally bad. 2011 was better overall thanks to 3DS games like Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7.

GameCube in 2005:

Star Fox: Assault
Baten Kaitos: Eternal Wings and the Lost Ocean
Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance
Chibi Robo!
Dance Dance Revolution: Mario Mix
Mario Superstar Baseball
Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness
Geist
Battalion Wars
Mario Party 7
Super Mario Strikers

You are forgetting the only game that matters on Gamecube in 2005:

I know it's not first party but it was exclusive at the time and I honestly didn't play a single game on the above list that year because RE4 is the fucking GOAT and lasted me the entire year.

based Gamecube in 2005.

This has been an awful year for Nintendo software. God bless Splatoon and Super Mario Maker.

The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask 3D - 89
Super Mario Maker - 88
Xenoblade Chronicles 3D - 86
Stretchmo - 83
Splatoon - 81
Yoshi's Woolly World - 78
Kirby and the Rainbow Curse - 73
Puzzle & Dragons Z + Puzzle & Dragons: Super Mario Bros. Edition - 73
Dr. Mario: Miracle Cure - 69
Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer - 67
Mario Party 10 - 66
Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water - 66
Chibi-Robo! Zip Lash - 62
Pokémon Shuffle - 56
Pokémon Rumble World - 56
Devil's Third - 43 (lol)

I love everything on this list, except for the bottom 3 (not played Devil's Third) and Fatal Frame (also not played). To me, they've had a great year.

I actually quite like Four Swords so you never know...I may pick this up. If I have friends who are going to play it.

2011 also had OoT 3D, Star Fox 64 3D, and 3D Land. I'd say it was a better year than 2015 overall.

Two remakes, but I forgot about 3D Land. That is true...

This year was pretty disappointing, but 2008 was definitely the worst. Barring the delays, at least stuff actually came out this year.

Looking at the release calendar, yeah that year was basically non-existent. Biggest Wii release for nintendo in the latter half of the year was Animal Crossing: City Folk, and I can't even find a big DS game.

If you count remakes, Kirby Super Star Ultra was a pretty big DS game. Sold more than the original, if I recall correctly.

Yep, there's also the fact that the GameCube and Wii actually had third party support, while the Wii U only has Skylanders and licensed shovelware. The droughts have never been this bad. Ever.

I agree that Nintendo has been slow this year, but Code Name STEAM is my GOTY and I don't care about the silly reviews. And about Triforce Heroes, I'm not even a Zelda fan and I loved the demo (I love to play Gauntlet-ish stuff with my friends). Then with Kirby, Mario Maker and SSB DLC, I've been having a good time with Nintendo stuff to be honest.

There is very very good games for me, way better than what I've played on other systems.

Two GOTY contender:
Super Mario Maker
Splatoon

Two very good platformers:
Yoshi's Woolly World
Kirby and the Rainbow Curse

Bonus on 3DS, a very nice little game out of nowhere:
BoxBoy

I had poorer years on N64 guys... clearly (or my memory fails).

2012 was a shit year for Nintendo. Wii U had NSMBU and Nintendoland. 3DS best release was Kid Icarus. Mario Tennis Open was bad, NSMB2 was meh, and Sticker Star was bad and it was the holiday game.

Wii in 2011:

Mario Sports Mix (2014 in Japan)
Wii Play: Motion
Mystery Case Files: The Malgrave Incident
Kirby's Return to Dream Land
PokéPark 2: Wonders Beyond
The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword
Fortune Street

Wii U in 2015:

Kirby and the Rainbow Curse
Mario Party 10
Splatoon
Super Mario Maker
Yoshi's Woolly World
Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water (2014 in Japan)
Animal Crossing: Amiibo Festival
Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash
Devil's Third
Xenoblade Chronicles X

Yeah now that you put it this way, 2015 is really the worst year for a final year of a Nintendo home console. Splatoon was truly the best they released this year. NX can't come soon enough. Like, REALLY! I love my Wii U but I simply cannot wait to move to new hardware. Wii U is beyond dead and is sad that their remaining titles are nothing but spin-offs (Mario Tennis, AC Board game) with the exception of Xenoblade of course, I think Xenoblade is going to be the very last game I'm purchasing for Wii U, after that, I think I'm done with the console :(

When people start scrambling to find years that were worse, that reflects badly on Nintendo; it means that they've had several bad years, which is probably why their market share has collapsed.

I had fun with the demo, but the multiplayer focus is not what I really desire from a Zelda game.

Despite the somewhat lackluster year, I'll still be playing 3DS for a very long time. I have tons of games to finish. These fall releases haven't been day one purchases, but I'll end up picking them up if there's ever a good deal.

Kirby was average at best in my opinion, the game had less features and was most importantly less fun than the damn DS game that came out 10 years ago.

Eh, I thought 2013 and 2014 were awesome.

So are we gonna get a NeoGAF community for this? If so, I might be interested. Can you make like private parties to join with passwords for friends only online? Can you play 2 local and one online?

I don't know anybody with a 3DS so I'm gonna have to pass on this one. I'm not really disappointed because I expected it to be fun with multiplayer only.

Is anyone actually gonna get this game for the singleplayer elements?

Like I could tell from playing the demo alone the single player would be horrible. It's clearly not the game's selling point though.

I do, not sure how I will take to it but I will be primary focusing on the single player content.

Yeah, that is why I was curious why people liked it. It was worse in every way than the original game except for graphics.
Puzzle and Dragons has been my surprise 3DS GOTY so far. Wooly World probably for Wii U.

I had a blast with the beta. I can't wait to play through the full game.

Same. It wasn't mind blowing or anything. But I had fun playing with randoms, so I'm still looking forward to it. Will probably try to exchange friend codes with some GAF folks as well.

EGM: 6.0

Tri Force Heroes is a Zelda game in name only. When you dig just past the surface, poor gameplay mechanics and key missing elements for a Zelda title tarnish what is otherwise a serviceable adventure game.

I played a bit of the game to help our reviewer test out the local multiplayer, and I got sick of the whole totem aspect pretty fast. I was kind of curious about the game, but after playing, I'm just going to skip it—even if I can put Link in a dress or cheerleader outfit.

Indies have been excellent this year, and Nintendo's been absolutely stellar on that front. Some of the best games this year have been indies across all the consoles.

BOXBOY was fantastic.

On the flip, this year has been a knock-out for Nintendo's penetration into communities. Smash is on a huge up-swing with their favor of Nintendo/Treehouse/The Samurai, and DLC. SMM has penetrated Twitch hard. Splatoon is a monster in Japan on a dead console (and lesser extent elsewhere). Its been a weird year, definitely not bad in a general sense but bad in a "hit for hit" game release schedule.

If anything, the 3DS has had the worst year in a while in terms of community relevance, though the refresh rebooted its mindshare a bit. Its been trucking along on localization and minor titles (and some criminally underrated titles like STEAM) and indies, nothing particularly big has come from Nintendo for it. (Of course, that's not really surprising if its getting retired next year. That's a lot of resources spent on assets that will basically die with the system.)

Eh, I thought 2013 and 2014 were awesome.

2013 was good for 3DS. Certainly it's best year (at least in the west).

2013 was not good for Wii U. Pikmin 3 was like the only Wii U game worth getting the entire year when it released. Then there was SM3DW and WWHD. That's pretty much it as far as well reviewed titles, and that's for a 12 month span and one is a HD remake that everyone already played. 3 games isn't enough.

This year was pretty disappointing, but 2008 was definitely the worst. Barring the delays, at least stuff actually came out this year.

2008 had Brawl! Before Meta Knight ruined the game.

And Mario Kart. No More Heroes? Wario Land Shake It? Megaman 9 aka the sleeper game of the generation?

DS got Chrono Trigger.

2008 was fantastic.

Don't have friends to play with so no buy for me then.

So weird not to buy any Nintendo games in whole Q4. Or yeah maybe Xenoblade X but not really excited about that one either.

Portable Kirby are the best... Triple Deluxe is very good, Mass Attack ad Amazing Mirror were also very good.

But I just like Kirby games so I'll enjoy even if for most of the people it's average. Art style on this one contributed a lot in the appeal of the game. For me it's part of the charm but I understand that it's not a solid game for a lot of people. But for 39€... why would I miss a Kirby game? ;)

Regarding Zelda Tri Force Heroes I agree that solo may be the biggest issue. Nintendo should understand that out of Japan not everyone owns a 3DS (and even a Japan it's far from the DS levels)... so adjusting gameplay and level design for solo would have been nice, even if not a big separate campaign (that would have made the game too expensive to make I guess).

It was something I was considering. But having seen video of the singleplayer and reading reviews on how bad it is, definitely not. The singleplayer being bad is helpful information.

Oh boy, I wanted more Four Swords like game, but with this having mixed reviews, I fear for the multiplayer Zelda games future.
2015 is certainly not a good year for Nintendo.
If it sells a million worldwide, I think they'll try again taking what they learned from this and along with the feedback they receive from people.

A little lower than I expected, but not surprising overall. It had the look of a quick filler title, and being outsourced to Greezo only confirmed that.

Yeah, not a good year for Nintendo. Aside from remakes Monster Hunter is the only big good title the 3DS has gotten. At least that system gets a decent amount of decent smaller games. 2016 is looking much better with Fire Emblem, Mario & Luigi, assumed new Pokemon, and I'm actually looking forward to Federation Force a bit. Wii U had Splatoon, Mario Maker, and that's it for big good titles. I knew this was going to be a lousy year for Nintendo before the year even started, and that became a certainty once Zelda was delayed, but yeesh.

Hopefully Yokai and Xenoblade pick up the slack so they leave the year on a high note. Xenoblade is going to get eaten by Fallout 4 in reviews though, so I expect mid-80s at best. That leaves Yokai, and I have no idea how that will go.

I'm not surprised at all. Probably a quick, cheaply made game with the Zelda franchise slapped on given that most major franchises have hit 3DS already. Same with Animal Crossing HHD.

Wii U in 2015:

Kirby and the Rainbow Curse
Mario Party 10
Splatoon
Super Mario Maker
Yoshi's Woolly World
Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water (2014 in Japan)
Animal Crossing: Amiibo Festival
Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash
Devil's Third
Xenoblade Chronicles X
I don't know... But this looks like a solid line up to me. I think not having an Xmas heavy hitter is what really makes it unfortunate.

Between Xenoblade Chronicles, Yoshi's Wooly World, and perhaps, Fatal Frame, I'll be content with the holiday line up.
