The March 21st Apple Event Thread: Looping In With OS Updates, A New 4-Incher, & More

Seems like the best replacement for my wife's 4S which is terribly slow. But $500 for the 64 GB model is still quite pricey. Hopefully Virgin Mobile will have it at a discount later this year.

I'm in the market for a new laptop, I have mostly Apple products at home, and I need something to take on the road that has good battery life, a nice screen and good keyboard.

The laptop will be used mostly for writing, is there any reason to not think seriously about buying the MacBook from last year?
An iPad is cheaper, otherwise no. No reason at all.

Probably gonna upgrade from my iPad 4 to iPad Pro 9.7", since I've been planning to upgrade this year for a while, but I'm not terribly happy about it. It's not an exciting product. True Tone display is the only thing that even made me perk my ears up. 32gb will cost me exactly as much as it did 3 years ago.

Edit: And did you seriously make a 10" tablet with a protruding camera? Seriously, Apple?

So basically the iPad Air is now dead and replaced with the smaller Pro. Whereas the Air had replaced the original iPad style. I wonder what will replace the Pro in 4 years.

Strange why the SE has the 5 design and not the 6. For consistency sake they should've gone with the 6/6s design because it looks out of place in that line up photo.

I have an Air 2, but I'm not a huge fan of using that for writing larger columns/reviews, I'm a rare case study of someone who needs a great keyboard for his day-job. I've heard mixed reviews about the keyboard on last years Macbook, I probably just need to head to my local Best Buy and try one out for myself. Thanks.

Is the event basically over? I was really hoping for a new large screen iPhone, like an iPhone 7 or something. Is all hope lost now?
Surely you know the schedule. This was just for the smaller phone. Basically the 5C replacement. The main line phones are always September. Every year. Like clockwork. You can set your 🍎Watch to it.

Kind of deceiving how Apple talked about the iPad Mini being $270. Made me think the iPad Mini 4 got a price drop, but I guess they were talking about the iPad Mini 2 which is $270. The naming gets confusing as hell if you just refer to it as the "iPad" instead of using the numbered iteration.

The SE is probably built usually as few changes from the tried and true 5/5S chasis as possible.

I wonder how long it will be before the 6/6+ disappear, though. The SE is significantly less expensive yet much more powerful (lacking only the larger size that some prefer) while the 6S/6S+ are slightly more expensive and much more powerful.

IIRC, Jony went with the curved edges on the 6/6S because square edges made the phone look and feel "too big".

But people loved the square edge design, and still do, so I guess that's why they stuck with it for the smaller SE.

Don't really care about the new iPad Pro, but I jumped at the lower price on the Air 2. Just grabbed a 64 GB refurbished one from them for $420. I'd been thinking about upgrading anyway, since my iPad 2 is slower than molasses in January, so the timing worked out pretty well for me!

Yeah... I think I am now officially tempted. If it is 2 GB of RAM, should I upgrade for a 64GB 6 to a 64Gb SE?
If you're really wanting to go back to a smaller screen then I see no reason not to. A bonus is that it'll probably fit all the already existent 5 and 5S cases that retail stores are surely full of.

Well they are calling it a "beloved design" on the web page.

To my eyes the 10-Inch iPad Pro isn't worth the cost jump over the Air 2, is it? Choosing one or the other.

If you don't plan to use the pencil or don't think you'll enjoy the new speaker setup? Then no, not really. The pencil really is incredible but if you're just going to use it for regular old apps and web, then it may be overkill.

Of course, there's the whole spec bump if you're really into pro apps / gaming. Perf might actually be better than on the full size pro if they don't bump the resolution to match.

I want an SE but my 5 is still going strong so I may wait.

Pretty much same. The US price isn't bad but the UK getting gouged hard as usual. If the UK price was closer to the US price even a little I would be tempted, but the 16gb version going from $399/£277 in the US to $516/£359 in the UK is more than a little bit shitty.

I am wondering what Apple did to make that phone so cheap. It looks super nice as the 5s was an amazing phone. The size is great. I have one that work gave me. It's better to wield than my 6s+. I bet it has 1gig ram. My 6s+ has 2 gigs and ios9 flies on it. Should wait for some reviews first but that's probably what they cut. Still great phone at a nice price.

It most likely has 2GB of ram because it's the same A9 chip as the 6S. (the ram is integrated on the chip)

Pencil and speaker setup aren't terribly compelling to me. If spec bump helps with split screen apps, that's a consideration; not aware if it's a problem on the Air 2. Otherwise, Air 2 is my best choice.

iOS 9.3 with Night Shift is so goddamn nice. Unbelievable that it took so long for Apple to officially introduce it in their products.
Only issue is that they need to add a gradual setting so it starts yellowing over a longer period of time.

Is there a way to permanently keep night shift on? or do I have to play around with the scheduling times

Man, I waited a whole year thinking the next gen watch would be announced today. Pretttty bummed. Now I'm not sure if I should just cave and get the current one at the new low price or double down on the waiting game. Maybe in the Fall? Maybe another year from today? Who can say.

How is it known what generation of Touch ID is present? I don't see this specified anywhere.

I feel like if you look at your phone at the time it's supposed to transition, it takes a full minute for it to fully yellow or blue.
