im like the other guy above. on an ipad 3. nothing has really piqued my interest until now. my ipad 3 has been going to shit ever since ios 6 but ive learned how to deal with it. pro sounded awesome, but you guys are casting doubts. that 12 inch pro is looking better and better. fuck. i have a feeling the 12 inch wont ever get refreshed.

It's official: I'm switching cycles. The math, timing, and pros and cons all for out. If I can make it happen, day fucking 1 for iPhone SE.

Question now is, anyone want a 64GB 6 for 300? Regardless, time to hit up the pawn shops tomorrow to get a good offer.

You should be able to trade one in to Best Buy for about $300

Ugh I'm still undecided and launch is today. Hope the preorder rush isn't mad although I doubt it will be.

(Edit) Ugh never mind my sense of time is wack I thought it was the 24th.....

168 USD, checked today. Got a couple of GAF offers. After official refurb Apple Store Swap, I am thinking phone with charger and cable for like 340ish shipped as an all-inclusive price now. Beats eBay by like a hundred or so, and I don't have to deal with fees that would negate the gains, win-win. Of course I'm flexible, but it is all dependent on other trade ins and what the pawn shop says. Regardless, I am not getting a cent less than 288.

On the one hand, not having 4GB of RAM in the 10" Pro is a bummer, but on the other hand, 2GB is still pretty solid on iOS.

Yeah. Don't know about the higher level drawing apps, for example, but for every thing else I haven't noticed much difference.

Part of me really wants to go back to a smaller phone, I am torn.

I am often nostalgic for Steve Jobs' Apple but having 3 iPhone sizes is the right thing to do and I don't know if he would have signed off on that. Apple are going to clean up this year again, they won't be able to make the SEs quickly enough.

Are you sure there are enough weirdos like me and you that would line up for an SE enough for a mini iPhone to be released with every flagship, or at least spec-identical 6 months after?

Because I want that to happen SO bad.

I aint lining up for it! Always wait to see if there are any manufacturing defects in the first month or so.

Loads of people bought the 8GB 5C on contract and that phone was straight up trash. I still see plenty of iPhone 4s around London too. The SE is going to be a massive hit, expect a big marketing push from Apple and carriers.

Unfortunately the Pro moniker is kind of a sham to increase the 9.7" price.

Yes, it is quite a nice upgrade. Quad speakers, upgraded SoC (standard upgrade), upgrade camera (standard) and a further refined display (a common effort by Apple).

But then again, how incredible was the iPad 2 upgrade to the 1st one. Thinner, lighter, double the RAM, double the speed, added cameras. Same price. Boom.

iPad 3 was a dud in retrospect but it had an absolutely groundbreaking display at the time, much larger battery to handle it, much better cameras, and double the RAM. Same price.

iPad Air. So new it had a new moniker. Same price. Air 2. Insanely thin and fast, double the RAM. Same price.

Again, the Pro is great. But it is basically the 2016 iPad following an expected progression. Now with an updated price tag.

Apple has been "updating" the iPhone price over the years with ease because it's easier to hide it away with the contracts. The iPad needed an extra help.

$650 has been the starting price for a "flagship" iPhone since the iPhone 4, actually.
I guess my perception is skewed by how it is in Europe where the price of the iPhone has been increasing more steadily, for which part of it can be pegged to exchange rates and so, but at the same time the iPad was just sitting on the 500 price for almost all this time (with neglectable increments of 10 euro or so some years, varying on country).

Still I stand corrected, and even though the ASP has still been increasing, I don't mean to move goalposts. Point is the iPad was due for a base price increase imo.

I hope the 2GB of RAM in the iPad Pro doesn't bode poorly for the iPhone 7 Plus.

I hope the 2GB is 'normal' for Apple and the 4GB in the larger pro is just to accommodate the larger resolution screen. In which case there would be no major benefit having 4GB in the 9.7 pro as it wouldn't be usefullly leveraged.

still means I'm even more pissed at the price rise though

At this point people are complaining about RAM size without even being able to articulate the actual difference it makes in everyday use.

Hell, I just wanted a 9.7 inch iPad with pencil support. Everything else is gravy.

Nah, fuck off Apple you cheapskates. 2gb of ram in the 'pro' is just shit. Again you will have safari crashes and not being able to have many tabs open. And the price for the lowest model in Australia is now $899. Bullshit.
Am not sold either. Will stick with the Air 1 until Air 3 (4GB, 4K) comes around.

Apple really shit the thread with the iPad pricing in Australia since the Pro. First the gimped 32GB 12.9" for $1249 and now the 9.7" for $899.

The Apple pricing is really shit in Australia the last couple of years.

I remember the iPhone 6 was $999 for the 64gb version which I thought was reasonable. The 6s 64gb is $1229. The 6 64gb is actually more than when it launched 18 months ago - $1079

I got my iPad Air 64gb for $799? The iPad Pro 9.7" 128gb (mid tier) is $1,149.

I'm kinda at the point where I can't really upgrade every 2 years, but maybe every 3 or 4 years and basically run the iDevice into the ground. Most of the hardware I hand down to family members so I can't really sell it and get money back either.

I'm pretty sure I paid $699 for my 32gb iPad 3. Now $899 for 32gb pro.

I have an offer from someone for my 128 Pro and would love to go back to the smaller size but the 2GB has really put me off.
Another thing that annoys me about the pro is the lack of support for multi-tasking and the larger display.
So many apps won't use the better on screen keyboard.
The fact that reports of sales are under-whelming means Apple aren't going to push either.
I should really let these things release and not jumping in so soon.
I might actually sell and pick up an air2 but the vibrations through the speakers are bad and I fear the new on will be worse with four speakers.

The Watch line is really just a glorified survey to see how much people are willing to fork out for the same product.

I mean the Apple Sport Watch which starts at $429 and goes right up to $1500 for literally the same thing but with a different band.

It's what Sony used to do with their vita memory cards, or the console hard drive sizes but just on a ridiculous scale.

I still want a Sport Watch but then I have to buy my wife and daughter one as well, dilemmas.

Doesn't that price include tax?

$600 USD = $791 AUD. Add 10% tax and you're not far off from 899, right?

People just want to big number.

It's about future proofing. It's logical to assume that 4GB of RAM would have given the Pro a longer amount of time before it started to become slow or lose access to new apps/games.

Now the memory is the same as the Air 2, there's only the faster processor to justify the upgrade for anyone who doesn't need Pencil support. Being awful at art I am one of those people, so paying near £200 more for what amounts to a faster processor and a couple more speakers isn't something I can justify. I'd rather put that £200 towards the next iPad I buy instead.

Why are the people concerned with longevity already considering upgrading?

When iOS starts feeling memory pressure it sends didReceieveMemoryWarning to apps to get them to throw out transient stuff. The first thing Safari does is start purging tabs from memory. Combined with split multitasking and PiP and memory pressure starts to rapidly increase.

4GB of RAM would allow a lot more stuff to be retained in memory instead of being thrown out and having to be brought back in from the network when you access it again.

I think Apple when given the option to future proof something err on the side of not.

Like the iPhone 6 absolutely needed 2gb ram but they opted not to.

It's changed my buying habits to waiting for the absolute best version hardware wise (ie the 's' version), rather than the look of the phone.

Not sure who you're referring to here - I currently have an iPad 3 which has lasted me 4 years.

You've made it 4 years with a 3 but you're worried about longevity on the Pro? I don't get it. The Pro is far better specced for longevity than the 3 was.

I guess I was just expecting a big spec jump over the Air 2 given the price rise, and what's actually inside doesn't seem all that great of a leap. There's the faster processor, but that's it. At £200 extra it's only really worth it if I'd get use out of the Pencil (additional £80) which I wouldn't.

The price drop of the Air 2 has meant that it seems the best option to go for now, for my needs at least.

So after updating/dropping my 6S and having the front panel replaced it actually works a lot better now. Touch ID was always shoddy before and the screen was pretty scratched up. Now that my 6S is all brand new again I'm reconsidering the hassle of getting the SE. I dunno. Maybe I'll get one just to try for a few weeks and see if it's worth it. The 3D Touch improvements in 9.3 are actually really solid.

Why do you have to make this so tough Apple? :( if the SE had the better front cam or 3D Touch or even new colors I would be all over it. But as of now it seems like more of a downgrade than anything. Maybe I'll just keep the 6S until they release a 4" with a new design. (Hopefully in a year.)

Since you've already got a 6s, the SE doesn't really seem like it's "for" you. I suppose you could view it as correcting a mistake if you upgraded to the 6s after giving up hope that they'd ever release a more current 4" phone, but yeah, probably best to just hold off for now, and next time you're in a position where you actually need to upgrade, you'll likely be able to select from a more current crop of phones at all sizes.

Unless this turns into a 5c misfire, gotta imagine they'll integrate the 4" phone in the regular update cycle in the future.

Hm, it goes further, the 2GB 9.7 inch also halves the memory bit width to 64 bit from the larger ones 128 bit, impacting the memory bandwidth total.
I mean, technically easy to understand, half the RAM, half the pinout, but that 128 bit bus is what allowed some of the A9Xs impressive feats. It does have less resolution to feed though I suppose.

Another curiosity is they both do not have 3D Touch, but the smaller one supports Live Photos while the larger does not.

Some head scratchers of choices in a few areas.

The A9X uses off package memory (highlighted in orange).

It takes a stupid amount of board real estate vs package on package, the tradeoff being much better heat dissipation from the heat spreader through to the metallic skin. You can drive a much bigger chip at much higher clock speeds with less thermal throttling.

They could have struggled to place it on the logic board, compare to the iPad Air 2 with its half size 1GB modules (again highlighted in orange).

Could be coming soon or delayed and Apple forgot to update the Server app because Apple hates it.

Apple's 'Early' timeframe is usually Jan- April.

Reliable rumor-mongerer Mark Gurman mentioned that 12" MacBooks were dropped from the March event but were still planned for likely April or May, with MBPs later.

I jumped on that Pro deal at Best Buy but without even opening it I think I'm gonna return it. It's just too big and quite frankly overkill for just comics, books, browsing, and occasionally Video. I can save about $330 just grabbing an Air2 and doubling the storage size.

Need to replace this Ipad3. I can barely have 1 GAF tab open without it crashing.
