The Metal Thread |OT2| All Riffs, No Gifs

Hell yes! Seminal album, and I've just got around to listening to it.

My favorite is Canterbury, but people think they wussed out on that album. Sean Harris is easily one of the most underrated singers in metal.

It is like most of the more mellow feel of most NWOBHM full lengths post 83. It is not bad at all though, I guess most hard nosed snobs say they would have wussed out, just like they say they don't like Praying Mantis. Sean Harris delivers one of my favorite performances on "To The Devil His Due" on that album.

What happened now?

They postponed their fall/winter NA tour because they are working on a new album and there where "scheduling conflicts". This is a load of BS because they fucking new about this leg of the tour since Feb. when they announced it in Chicago. Plus I believe Manowar(or at least DeMaio) owns their own studio so they can schedule the recording whenever the hell they want.

Slash those ticket prices in half and the sales will start rolling in, DeMaio.

Question time metalGAF: what is your favorite "boss song" (I'm sure there's a better term but I've always used this terminology)?
If you're confused as to what I am talking about, I'm referring to the typical song on the album that is usually more than two minutes longer than any other piece on the track, usually found near the end of, if not at the end of, the album. Often the title track of the album, often not.

Personally I'm torn between Iron Maiden's "When the Wild Wind Blows" and Sonata Arctica's Deathaura.

NIghtwish - Ghost Love Score

Trivium - Shogun

Watain - They rode on

Those are awesome.

I'm surprised I like In Flames' new album as much as I do. Sounds of a Playground Fading only had a handful of songs I liked (though I really, really liked those songs). I expected this album to be throwaway after the forgettable singles but the rest of the tracks are a really damn good effort for the direction they've been on for a while now.

The singles didn't hit me at first. I thought they were pretty boring and throwaway, too, but then I came back to them a bit before the release of the album and I loved them. Now I think they're some of the better tracks on the album.

Overall it's a good disc I think. There are a few duds so far, but it's got some good stuff. Not sure whether I like it more or less than Sounds right now, though.

Not 100% true to that definition but Fixxer by Metallica.

Blood of the Kings and Achilles, Agony And Ecstasy in Eight Parts by Manowar.

Wow it feels almost impossible to choose, there are is too much good stuff.

I think I will have to go with Kings of the Nordic Twilight by Luca Turilli. It kind of perfectly encapsulates everything I love about power metal without any sense of irony.

Personally, I'm torn over which version of Kings is better: its edit or the full length.
With Prophet it's no contest that the original is better, but the edit does have a different "feel" to it.

Iron Maiden the thread, the album closers from NOTB thur SiT are all suitably epic with Alexander III of Macedon being my favorite.

Phobophobia for epic thrash.

The Symbolic trilogy of 1000 eyes, w/out judgement, and crystal mountain is pretty epic but doesnt count.

I'm not a fan of Iced Earth but Dante's Inferno is cool.

Epica - Design Your Universe

Man, I can't choose between Si monvmentvm, Fas, or Paracletus as the best Deathspell Omega album. I dunno, what do you people think?

Also, I'm digging this:

Si Monumentum is my favorite by a good mile. I'd go as far to say it's one of the pillars of black metal. It's atmospheric, ferocious, and evil as all fuck.

JESS AND THE ANCIENT ONES IS SUPPORTING KING DIAMOND ON HIS U.S. TOUR FUUUUUUUUUUUCKING GODDAMMIT I'VE NEVER BOUGHT A SCALPED TICKET BEFORE HOW DO I DO THIS? Do I hang out outside of the venue on the day of the show? Go to Craigslist?

Agh! AGH I HAVE TO GO!

Why the hell do so many people in Chicago know who King Diamond is to the point where his concert sold out in mere days?

This is bullshit

Shit, guys...i think I've fallen in love.

It's true that they feel different enough to almost become different songs. But I think something is lost in the edit, it doesn't reach the same heights of epicness (as much as I hate to use that word) without the entire build up before it.

Two more weeeeeksssss

I can't even process how someone can hate on Foundations of Burden. That shit is so clearly AotY for me, it's not even funny (considering the amazeballs Thou album for example).

Pretty much that, yeah. Paracletus is a damn fine album but let's face it, there is something really sinister inside SMRC. When it originally came out in 2004, I remember being intimidated by its overwhelming atmosphere and all in all sinister riffage.

In my opinion, the "new" (from SMRC onwards) DsO hasn't really made a weak album yet. SMRC just puts the bar damn high right off the bat. If I had to rank the albums from best to "worst", I'd go with something like this: SMRC ≥ Kenose > Paracletus ≥ Drought ≥ Diabolis Absconditus / Mass Grave Aesthetics > Fas.

My man! That would be my exact ranking too. Such a great band. SMRC just blew my mind the first time I heard it. I love that the lyrics on SMRC are more straightforward and less esoteric than some of their other albums (Fas) too. They still have such an authentic religious tone though that just oozes evil.

Holy fuck this is fantastic. Canada represent.

Meant to check it out yesterday, but after reading that Fassbender story, and heading to the new releases, they described this album as..

"This band is kind of fantastic. They are the musical crossroads of Amon Amarth, Children of Bodom, and DragonForce. If you're a fan of any of those three, you really should listen to the included track and look into these guys. They're epic, heavy, melodic, and full of technical moments from every musician involved."

Crimson Shadows - Rise To Power

Reminds me plenty of stuff like Skyfire, Wintersun, Norther, Ensiferum, etc etc. Just that amount of speed and melody,
