The Metal Thread |OT2| All Riffs, No Gifs

Mastodon was mediocre an eternity ago when the fire ants video was out, and they're just differently mediocre today. One of the most mediocre popular heavy bands ever, just a notch behind Lamb of God for that honor.

They have pulled off some catchy songs, one of them on The Hunter was pretty good (Octopus something).

Man, the opinions really tend to differ with each person you ask regarding Mastodon...I always thought Remission and Blood Mountain to be their weakest albums (still do) but I know people that put them above the rest. Whatever it is, 'Round the Sun strikes the same chords with me as Crack The Skye.

I enjoyed Blood Mountain. That was probably the last Mastodon album I listened too at any length. I really disliked their "proggy" direction they went with the next few albums and then just completely lost interested.

Their fanatical fanbase doesn't help them any either in my eyes. Similar to how people who hate Opeth REALLY hate Opeth because their fanbase tend to be annoyingly fanatical.

Hey,

I just got my account validated on GAF. Since this thread is basically the biggest reason I decided to register myself, what better place than here to introduce myself!

Been listening to metal for a good twenty years now, and although genres mean little to me nowadays, I mainly treat my ears to the dulcet tones of heavily distorted guitars. Favourite bands include Manowar, Helloween, In Flames and Dissection, all of whose earlier albums I prefer to their latter output, excluding Dissection as I'm one of those kooks who thinks "Reinkaos" is their best effort.:-)

Looking forward to joining in on some discussion here, as this is probably the most mature metal forum (even though it's a thread) I've come across.

Welcome! Glad to see you are here.

All good bands. In particular, I'm a big fan of Keeper of the Seven Keys Part 2, which is my favorite Power Metal album and one of the albums that helped me open up to the genre finally (which was last year). I like Dissection, although I like their Black Metal albums the best; Storm being one of my favorite Metal albums ever. Jester Race is also another classic; possible my favorite Melodeath album.

I don't like Mastodon(shocking, I know).
:)

Welcome! The tea and biscuits are over ther--

I'm one of those kooks who thinks "Reinkaos" is their best effort.:-)
*flips table*
Did I say tea and biscuits? I meant the cabbages boiled in mint sauce.

You'd probably like those better too, you sicko!

I thought I might as well come out guns blazing from the start and probably go down in a blaze of glory, but I might actually have found one of the scant few other people of myth who like "Reinkaos" in the process instead. Up the irons and all that to ya, Haemo!

We can all agree upon De Infernali not being the greatest thing ever, though, right?:-)

Remission is still my favorite:

Remission/Crack/Once/Leviathan/Blood/Hunter

At least right now-- maybe Leviathan and Once with exchange places when the newness wears off?

I honestly feel bad about opening the Mastodon can of worms since it detracted from Pallbearer discussion.

I posted this a few days ago but I just saw Pallbearer live on Friday. They played 3 new songs and all of them were fucking amazing. Their new album has probably shot up to my #1 most anticipated this year.

Salem's Wych - Betrayer Of Kings

Salem's Wych coming from Michigan put out this little gem in 1986, a great display of early American Power Metal. The songs are addicting and melodies are so infectious you would have thought Colonel Sanders supplied the band with his recipe of seven secret spices.

There is really nice guitars on display from axemen Tom Bronicki and Mark Gast while the lyrics are well written and set the atmosphere for the album. Ron Johnson(R.I.P) displays some killer classic heavy metal vocals on this album and his melodies are a real big highlight.

If you are a fan of the classic era of Power Metal, then don't let this gem slip by your ears.

Stand out tracks - Sweet Revenge, Attack, Run from the Devil, Fight 'till the End, and my favorite track Furor's Reign

The song that was on NPR would have been a highlight on Sorrow and Extinction, hearing that there's at least 2 more songs that are rad has me even more hyped.

Edit: That reminds me, the big band at that time was Elvenking; are they still doing decent stuff? I stopped listening to folky stuff around 2004 when that album (Wyrd) dropped.

I remember liking The Winter Wake and thinking everything from The Scythe on was terrible.

Naw, Wuthering Heights is a decent folky powermetal band. Used to listen to them in high school: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IgSf_X9N3tM

They just dropped a new album recently, and according to angrymetalguy (a fun metal site that reviews things far harsher than I do), it's actually good. I haven't liked Elvenking since their second album, but I'm looking forward to checking the new one out whenever I muster up enough of a flying fuck to listen to them again.

Ha, my English Profressor hated this song. I really like Kate Bush, but have always been sort of meh on this song (from a musical perspective, anyway). I like her later/"middle" (?) material more than her earlier material.

Anyway, now I want to play Metal Bass, which is convenient for me because I have a Bass Guitar! I've been on and off, but I still like playing bass. Any other Bass players here?

hey metalgaf, chilling here in brussels waiting to head over to graspop metalfest in 2days.

Despite terrible mismanagement, hellfest in france was a blast. Especially when you had a 1.5 litre pitcher to keep your belly full of beer throughout the day.

here's a breakdown of bands judging by their performance from what I saw

God tier:
Tsjuder - 60 minutes of aggressive riffalicious black metal that kept the crowd begging for more
Destroyer 666 - no poseur theatrics, just raw badassery
Slapshot - best hardcore band at the fest
Ruins of Beverast - partially because im a fan boy

Great tier
Emperor - crowd ate up I am the black wizard and inno a santana
Conan - favourite doom/sludge performance o saw, though heard kylsea may topped it
Slayer - raining blood with 80000 other slayer fans
Electric Wizard - think I got high from all the secondhand smoke. tent was packed iut
Turbonegro - best homoerotic rock n roll party band around
Black Dahlia Murder - had 4 circle pits going on at once. my travel buddy did a figure 8 while moshing
Witch Mountain
Deep Purple
Heretic - really good black n roll

Average tier
Sub Rosa
Obliteration
1349 - too chaotic and repetitive
Gorguts - great on album, doesn't really translate well live
B'last - poor sound
Brutality Will Prevail
Impaled Nazarene

Low tier
Sepultra
Incantation

Dissapointing
Urfaust and Mlga pulling out.
Missing Carcass and Gorgoroth because of the poor public transport

Graspop is looking good though with Napalm Death, Cynic, Candlemass, Tryptikon and Nails on the list

the new young and in the way album is pretty solid. deathwish has been putting out a lot of good albums the past couple years.

get to see nails and xibalba at this is hardcore next month. gonna be pretty awesome.

Nice, gonna see both of them in August at Denver Black Sky. Nails' performance at last year's This is Hardcore is one of my favorite vids on youtube, such an insane crowd: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tg5K42gfbh8

You're not the only one...and I liked them from when they released The Somberlain.
