When someone mentions "doom lite" I think of The Gates of Slumber, not a Warning clone with modern rock influence.

It's an edit of a 3 part song. Like most prog metal, it's gonna have very long tracks.

Power metal is so fucking underrated and overlooked among "old school" and underground metal fans, at least from what I have seen. I too have avoided it largely for YEARS because of the stigma attached to it, especially modern power metal. I have listened a lot 80s power metal, and some early 90s stuff, but for the most part, I had glossed over anything past that. There is this stigma that power metal in general is overblown, excessively cheesy, generic, cliche, etc. Unfortunately, this caused many people including myself to not give it a chance.

Now thanks to the guidance to a knowledgeable friend, power metal is probably what I am listening to the most now. What I have found is that with today's power metal there is tons of great bands, and a lot of average ones, just like any genre. But when this stuff is at its best, it is absolute ear candy. I myself prefer some of the more symphonic bands.

This band is amazing. This is the album that I was listening to when I had that "holy shit this power metal stuff is awesome" moment.

Dark Moor - The Gates of Oblivion

If you're going to listen to Dark Moor, listen to the 2nd and 3rd albums. Some real fantastic songs on those.

Lost Horizon - A Flame to the Ground Beneath

You may laugh at the cover, but this shit is awesome. Fantastic songwriting and musicianship, and the vocalist is POWERFUL.

Twilight Force - Tales of Ancient Prophecies
Couldn't find a decent image of the cover art. But yeah, this sounds like a romanticized retrospective of the history of European power metal. Pretty vanilla, but it is executed with great youthfulness and vigor. It's just so fun to listen to.
 
I had no idea other Metal fans looked down on Power Metal. It's not my top genre, but I respect the genre and enjoy albums in it. And Yes, Keeper of the Seven Keys Part 2 is an amazing album (of course, not every song is as good as the other, but what album doesn't have that?).

I have seen it before. The emotions sometimes range from indifference, disrespect to straight mockery, and I know many friends who explore deeply all other types of heavy metal but do not bother with any power metal except for early classics like Helloween or Blind Guardian. Some friends on my RYM consistently rate power metal albums really low scores. The negativity definitely isn't as widespread as the dislike of deathcore or something, but there is indeed something there. Usually black and death metal fans do not really care for it.
 
Yeah I'd have to say power is one of my least favorite sub genres. I do like some bands from it, though. Old Symphony X is my shit.
 
The logos of the two bands look pretty similar too, guess that's no coincidence! I don't recall the last time I listened to Luciferion but apparently its pretty darn good.

GAF, I'm utterly confused.

Today I was introduced to a Japanese band called BABYMETAL. They do something like a metal-JPop-Crossover. I really don't know what to think of this.
Is this the work of a genious or of a maniac? Do I like it? Should I like it? How awkwad is it when grown men mosh to some sixteen year old girls?

not a fan of what i've heard of them musically but i'll never begrudge the existence of bands like this, since they usually serve as gateway drugs to some percentage of their fans.

I disagree with the not metal part. If you manage to ignore the girls there is some quite good instrumentation. Of course it is no trve oldschool stuff but I think it is more "metal" than most recent metalcore stuff (And yes, I consider core as a subgenre of metal). The singing of course is kind of the opposite of metal and that is kind of my problem. If the instruments were bad I could say "It's horrible", if the singing was good I could say "Hey, cool band", but this way...

I'm surprised I like In Flames' new album as much as I do. Sounds of a Playground Fading only had a handful of songs I liked (though I really, really liked those songs). I expected this album to be throwaway after the forgettable singles but the rest of the tracks are a really damn good effort for the direction they've been on for a while now.
 
So Messhuggah is coming with a live 2 CD/Blu-ray set called Ophidian Trek later this month. Time for some HD Messhuggah bitches!

From my understanding they are just like a standard modern metal band but the gimmick is that the 3 girls are the front of the band in which they sing in a J-pop style. You could do a lot worse than this, and its at least fascinating for what it is.

I don't know. Some songs are quite good (Paralyzed, When the World Explodes, Filtered Truth) but some of them are just unbearable (Monsters in The Ballroom, Through Oblivion). I liked most of Sounds Of A Playground Fading, tough. But what should one say? They went this direction for ages now so this album and the label change to Sony just are the natural next step.
 
Darkspace is releasing a new album this week. They play a brand of noisy, harsh and rather monotone, wall of sound black metal. It embodies the vast, desolate reaches of space very nicely. I'm wondering how this all will sound. Their demo -I and second album II were more ambient oriented. I and III on the other hand were faster paced, with quite some aggressive tracks.
So far only 500 CDs, as far as I know. I hope it also goes digital soon, the rest of their output is available on bandcamp.

I own their selftitled album. Gave it a couple of listnes but I didnt like it. The main issue I have with it that it felt aimless. Tracks didnt go anywhere, it sounded all very samey and uninteresting. I went in quite with a positive outlook, but overall it was a dull and unstatisfying experience.

Corsair are becoming one of my favorite bands. They have a unique sound that can be described as blend of early heavy metal and heavy/prog rock. Think of the legendary album "Revival" by Winterhawk, which I consider to be one of the greatest hard rock albums in history. Their music sounds a lot like that, old school, heavy, virtuosic guitar-driven rock music. A great emphasis on melodic leads. Of course, there are many, many bands that claim to play old school music, but there is something very unique about this band. It is partly heavy metal, so I guess I can put it here. You can't go wrong with this.

I'm a big fan, can't wait for the 2nd album early next year - there's a real touch of Thin Lizzy to some of their songs, they have a great old-school sound.
