Wow, the Tower of Babil truly has had an awesome makeover. I wish I could find pics of it online, but no luck. And to think it used to look like this in the old days:

But damn, the monsters inside of it a super tough. :o
ah the memories of that tower....

Just starting to play through this. I played Final Fantasy "II" on the SNES and also played through the GBA version. I love the little touches they have added to tell more of the story / thoughts of the characters. Also, I love
Tellah's
voice, its hilarious.
Kain's voice is exactly how I thought it should be. He is a dastardly bastard. I'm not really sure I like the learned skills, as I learned counter with Cecil and it doesn't work or something :X
Did you equip it under abilities?

Does it matter if I give the Namingway in the Chocobo Forest that's east of Fabul my tents? I had 10 and he gave me 300g for them so I reset.

I was wondering about the Namingway thing too. I looked it up on some FAQs and all of them said to just give him the tents. I'm guessing you have to do it to keep that little sidequest going? I dunno, maybe someone else here can help.

I already gave him my tents, so oh well.

My god, this game has to be the most annoying thing ever. I guess I have to grind until I'm level seventy freakin' five before facing one of those Red Dragons guarding the chest in
Lunar Subterrane
. Even after slowing them, they still use 2HKO heat beams twice in a ROW.

I already gave him my tents, so oh well.

Might as well give him your tents..as long as you buy new ones later. That little shit stole my tents and I forgot to buy them again.....

The sidequest will stop much later in the game due to a very rare item, but I'm considering starting it again just to get the damn Safe Travel ability. I wish this game had a freakin' map percentage database.

I gave him 23 tents and got 300. If it's in the next step in the sidequest chain, might as well get it out of the way.

Ha, i thought "Mom Bomb" was
a scripted fight, because everyone dies after the explosion, only the Monk survives.
After i won that fight thanks to luck [the Monk had 20 HP and he was the last one standing] i remembered the "Defend" command... fuck.
If you use that on that fight, everything should be easier, right?

Note that Mejilan probably maxed out all of his characters before entering the mountain.

Possibly. I'm about to leave
Mt. Ordeals
for the first time since becoming a
Paladin
and Cecil's approaching level 40. Palom, Porom, and Tellah are well past 40...

:D

It's amazing how awesome auto-battle is when you're playing FFIV DS while simultaneously watching Murder in the First (followed by The Green Mile), and ripping ~55 PSP games...

Who? What?

Anyhoo, I'm getting ready to one of my least favorite dungeons, The magnetic one. What tips you guys got?

I had no problems at all just going through it normally, with Cecil just acting as a healer.

I just got past that part last night. He took all 15 or so tents. Unfortunately Mysidia only sells cabins, so it was a pretty expensive setup for my initial trip to the trials mountain.

Ok, put about 6 hours into it.

My thoughts,
first of all, FFIII ds is waaaaay harder than this, so for all of you that are complaining about the difficulty, please go pick up FFIII and see what a difficult final fantasy is like. (even then it's not difficult really, just old-school)
There are save points, phoenix downs, ethers, and tents all over the place in this game. Just conserve your resources and don't blow all of them in the beginning of the game.

Secondly, I am so impressed with this game and it's polish... I fondly remember the gba remake and playing through that just a few years ago... so it's all still fresh in my memory. It's an awesome and worthy remake.

Thirdly, I complained a few pages back about the change in camera to side view and I was happy to see the return of the 3/4 view on bosses. It makes it more special and I really really liked that perspective from FFIII DS...

lastly, after playing through it, this engine seems powerful enough to me to do ports of 7, 8, and 9 on the DS. Not that I see that happening necessarily but I certainly think it's possible and doable. The sony fanboys would cry bitter tears but in the end we would all win. Change a lot of the CG cutscenes to in-engine scenes and I think they could do it!

anyway, I am loving it so far... haha it's a good game to hold me over until Dragon Quest IV comes out in September
:D

Ok, what's up with Yang?

He didn't have a mustache in the original version that I can remember...and he's blonde on top of it...a blonde freak'n mustache!!!! Well, at least it's a cookie duster and not a set of handle bars.

Just got back to it after a week of near-exclusive SCIV. Things going well, mostly auto-battle (while processing vids, watching TV, surfing...:lol) in the last dungeon. Then I get to a chest that might have a surprise attack and turn off auto-battle. Figure it will be another Behemoth, big whoop...But no, it is a
Red Dragon
.

Suffice to say, I know to exit and save my progress before hitting that one again.

I made amazing progress last night.. My guys are right around Lvl 50.. minus
Edge
who is sitting right around 40 because you get em at a low lvl.

The whole
Edge unleashing his powers and Rubicantes voice and script were EPICTACULAR

Great game so far.. I love it. I cant wait to play through again. My team seems flippin' powerful and I'm about to go to the
Town of the Summoners
now. I haven't done
Sealed Cave
yet.. and my guys seem higher lvl then others who posted in the thread.. Then again I never run from a battle.

He's standing right next to a
white chocobo, and Porom has cure spells, so you don't really need a tent or a cabin outside Mt. Ordeals.

Dude, I'm at level 50 after
beating the Eidolon and Sylph caves and about to go to the Sealed cave
and I feel I'm wayyyyyy overleveled.

You nutz man.

Awesome awesome awesome stuff on this one. It's a strange but great feeling playing this and Lost Odyssey side by side.

I was busy, and wasn't really paying attention to the game. I was a little surprised at the levels. Though it was before the major grind session last night, Scarmiglione went down SOOOO fast. I think I had
Dark Knight
Cecil up around the high 30s too... :lol

At what level in the
Lunar Subterrane
do the Red and Blue Dragons start appearing? The only battles I've encountered, as soon as you get in there near the teleporter, are with the same shit giving exp enemies that are in the
Lair of The Father
. (Wizards, etc.)

I don't think I even got

I never encountered one outside of a guarded chest, so apparently they are on the very lowest levels of the area. But I haven't seen one even on floor 11.

Been really enjoying this remake after loving FFII back in the day, it's been a blast revisiting it. I must have really spread out my play time on this one back in the day as I didn't think I became a
Paladin after 9 hours of playtime, and I buffed up my characters a bit
. Was happy to see
"You spoony Bard!"
make it in, thought that line might have been dropped from this remake.

I'm getting the urge to start buffing up my characters (again) now that I'm in
The Tower of Zot (iirc)
, got nearly wiped out in a battle early on. Argh.

Man, Edward makes himself so easy to hate on,
tripping and screaming as we retreat from Fabul's throne room and causing an extra encounter

wait till..
They are on the ship and he falls because the boat rocks a little and is knocked unconcious

Weaksauce..

Not to mention he whines and gives up when
Anna dies.. and Cecil has to slap him and Rydia a freaking 5 year old or something has to put him in his place

:lol

After a while (70s) it takes 30+ something battles each time to level up in the sub. At this rate, I should be 99 late tonight or tomorrow.

That gave me a good laugh.

Right now I've just been roaming between
Mysidia and Mount Ordeals
leveling up
Palom and Porom
, got them both to level 20 now. The Zu's make it so easy. I figure once the progress leveling up seriously begins to taper off I'll head on up to
Mount Ordeals
.

I'm trying to get the Treasure Hunter augment and to my knowledge, I've 100%'ed every map...but still nothing. I wish there was a way to check old maps and see percentages. I don't know where I would've missed something.

game is not half bad, thanks to the official FFIV Manual Guide: Dragona i am now autobattling the snore-inducing grinding out of the way so that i can more appropriately enjoy the experience. Definitely helps!

I don't know about you, but for me, the map of B4
Lunar Subterrane
is stuck at 99%, and I can't complete it.

In other news, I finished the game.
Zeromus is easy as fuck when slowed.
I'll definitely be playing it again before the end of the year, though.

As I said in IRC: if you had read the actual manual you would have discovered this much earlier! :P

hey guys, I just finished my review of this game and it should go up on my site tonight or tomorrow. can you give me some feedback?

Final Fantasy IV has been remade and ported several times the last decade. Known as one of the greatest role-playing games ever made, the game has been eaten up every single time. Square Enix noticed the same success when they revamped Final Fantasy III for the Nintendo DS in 2006. With completely rehauled 3D visuals and a refined soundtrack, Final Fantasy III DS was met with both critical acclaim and excellent consumer response.

Riding off the success of that title, Square introduces Final Fantasy IV DS. Uncontent with just adding some fancy 3D effects and higher quality sound, the company wiped the slate clean and began production on a thorough and complete remake. Does it live up to expectations of being the definitive version of Final Fantasy IV? The answer is "absolutely".

On the most basic level, FFIV DS is a graphical touch-up, and indeed even that is enough to warrant a purchase if you ask most fans. Square goes the extra mile by adding a much-improved translation, remixed tunes, high-quality voice-acting, and several gameplay refinements.

I'm probably alone in this, but my favorite part of this remake is the refined localization. I'll confess: I've never completed the original Final Fantasy IV. I tried and I even got pretty far in. However, at the end, the poor translation kept me from finishing. The grammar and spelling were awkward, plot points weren't always completely explained, and the whole thing felt very rough and unpolished.

Thankfully, every problem I had with the source material's translation has been rectified in FFIV DS. Every single line of text has been gone through and edited and the result is an excellent localization effort that turns what was once a confusing story into a gripping one.

For those who aren't won over by redone graphics and want to know what about this remake warrants a purchase, rest assured that there is plenty.

The most obvious gameplay addition is the new Augment system. Throughout the game, you are certain to encounter abilities called Augments. You can have your characters learn these abilities and then they can perform them in battle. For example, the Cry ability will grant one of your party members to lower your enemy's defense during combat. This allows for much customization and is a seemingly small, but effective tweak.

The problem lies in that while you can learn a fair number of Augments by exploring the game world, you will need to learn the most useful ones by giving up Augments to characters who will leave your party at one point or another. For old-school fans of the game, this won't be a problem. They'll know every plot point and twist and will know which characters will leave. For newer players, this is a huge problem as you can expect. Indeed, if you want to get your hands on all the Augments, a step-by-step walkthrough is practically required.

FFIV DS also features a ramped-up difficulty level. Ask any fan of FFIV and they'll agree the original game is pretty easy. Well the remake is definitely pretty hard. While level grinding isn't necessary except for one or two parts, the game's bosses and even ordinary monsters require some good strategy. As an extra helping of difficulty, two secret super bosses have been added who are a worthy challenge even at level 99 with the best possible equipment and Augments.

Easily the most obvious change to FFIV DS is the upgraded graphics. Previously 2D, FFIV has been brought into the 21st century with beautiful (if you consider the DS hardware) graphics. It's a close race between this game and The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass for best DS graphics, but I'd have to give the edge to FFIV DS. Character models are nicely detailed, the lighting--especially in cutscenes--is excellent, and the loading times are quick. The only blemish is the low framerate in battles but after a hour of playing, you won't even notice anymore.

The voice acting is also very well done with clear and audible sound (even without headphones or external speakers) and the character's lines are well acted. I did, however, feel that Kain and Cecil's voices should've been switched. Cecil gave me flashbacks of Robin from Batman and Robin which doesn't suit his character at all. Everything considered though, you are likely to appreciate the voice acting as long as you're OK with discovering you've been pronouncing Cecil's name wrong for the last 15 years.

Overall, FFIV DS is a winner. Not only is it the defining iteration of FFIV, it's one of the greatest remakes ever produced and deserves a permanent spot in every DS owner's collection.

Ehh, I wouldn't go that far. Personally, I give it a 7/10. It was a much better effort than FFIII though.
