This thread has convinced me to seek out Turn A. I've seen all the UC stuff except for ZZ and I've seen Wing so I am a pretty big Gundam fan in general.

It's cool, but I'm not even going to pretend I know what the hell is going on in it. It's like he planned out a new 50 episode series, and then crammed it down into 6 minutes.

Hope someone subs it soon.

Holy shit 30 years? Wow, I had no idea this franchise had gone on for so long. I've been thinking of getting into Gundam lately (I've never watched a full series before, but I have seen a few eps here and there), but I have no idea where to start. So what say you Gaf? What the best series for a Gundam newbie to start on?

If you want something recent that you don't need a lot of back story knowledge to enjoy, Gundam SEED or Gundam 00 are pretty fair shows. Being a toku fan, I'm sure you'll dig them for what they are.

If you want the real meat & potatoes, watch the original Gundam movie trilogy (or the TV series if you have the time), and then move on to Zeta Gundam and then Char's Counterattack. From there, you can pretty much watch anything UC, though most would recommend watching Turn A after you've seen most UC shows and a few AU shows like Gundam X, Gundam Wing, or G Gundam.

Man that's a lot of choices. I've a few bits of 00 here and there, so maybe I'll do that first. I'll definitely check out those movies though, and work my way from there. Thanks man.

Aw yeah dude. The novels are pretty great too, I laughed when Ryu Roots pissed his pants because the Superior Gundam went so fast. Oh, and FAZZ shot rotations gets me hard. Fuck, all the gritty, real stuff of Gundam always gets so overlooked. :(

Sorry to disappoint you bro, but the director, Imagawa, is the type of guy who makes open-ended endings with text referring to a potential sequel just for the sake of it. See Giant Robo.

Seriously? A lot of people who didn't like normal Gundam love G Gundam. And call it their favorite too. If anything, someone declaring that he doesn't like 08th MS team/0083 will be more likely to find himself alone amongst western Gundam fans.

Victory's light years better than both, by the way.

So is Victory gundam any good? I haven't watched any of the later UC stuff after F91.

It's kind of a mixed bag. The show certainly has its good points, but the fact that Tomino was severely depressed at the time really hurts the writing (it's not like Evangelion, where the director being fucked up enhanced the show).

It's far from the worst Gundam series, but it isn't the greatest either.

So I'm guessing it has a higher death toll than Zeta?

Really? I thought it was great, even with the Tomino depression.

In any case, Victory has awesome, witty fights. It's also simultaneously cheerful and very dark at the same time; this show will get reactions out of you. Honestly, it's one of my very favorite series', great tech porn and great story.

GUNDAMUUUUUUUUUUUU!!!

I've been on a huge ass Gundam kick for the last couple of weeks now starting with playing Gundam Senki. The game is surprisingly really fun, especially with the Efreet Nacht.

Anyway, to follow up on the Gundam kick, I got word that my XN Raiser addition has been sent to my house. Time for some ridiculous add ons!

Plus, I started work on a functional SD Gundam in LBP as a 30th Anniversary tribute!

I properly added the pink beam blasts and other little details. Still working on the beam blade, but I'll get it done soon.

And Gundam X and G Gundam are my definite fave AUs. :D

Cool stuff.

I watched 0079 and Zeta last year for the first time and I loved it. The story in Zeta was great and 0079 was pretty fun to watch too even if the animation was dated. I watched the TV series which I borrowed from a friend and bought the movie trilogy when I finished watching them.

I started ZZ when I finished Z last year but needed a break from Gundam at that point but this thread made me want to start it up again. I plan on watching every Gundam series in order of production. I'll buy the ones available here in the US too.

Too quiet in here. How's about some music?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7GB90NcP5PQ

Tobe! Gundam- From Mobile Suit Gundam. Didn't care for this much at first, now it's one of my favorites.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tA450yRJ6Cs

The Winner- From Gundam 0083: Stardust Memories

LOVE this song. This was what originally prompted me to watch 0083 when I first saw it on Cartoon Network.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dJ8XH5JGyzQ

Dreams- From After War Gundam X

Probably my favorite Gundam opening. Didn't care much for Resolution.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yTEaue56tGk

Men of Destiny- From Gundam 0083

Right up there with The Winner, maybe even a bit more badass.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uLTzY00gNZY

Arashi no Naka de Kagayaite- From 08th MS Team

Like it, have yet to watch the anime though. :3

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EUNqUpChNeM

Stand Up To The Victory: From V Gundam

Again, haven't watched it, but I love the song.

This thread is making me miss being 10 years younger and spending way too much time building Gundam models.

And 0080/08th Team/Zeta always make me smile.

Does the Astray side-story still exist? I thought it was over ages ago. It was the actual interesting side of the Seed universe.

Battlefield Record UC 0081 is so ridiculously well made for a Gundam game. I can't believe just how much fun it is.

havent seen resin kits in years, didn't think they are still around, pain in the ass to build, i've only managed to built one led mirage from the FSS series but gave up mid way. Expensive and time consuming delicate task, arg..

yeah still around, expensive and difficult. Snapfit toys/kits are way more popular these days, but the effort to build a resin kit is worth it imo, the put any plastic kit to shame.
Here my Master Grade Qubeley, looks like a cheap toy compared to that resin.

Nah.

It's still alive as a zombie. The days where Astray churned out sweet-looking designs to make up for its painfully weak storyline are gone. Now all they're doing is continually revising designs into uglier and uglier iterations. The last real Astray sidestory, Frame Astrays are just utter shit. Feast your eyes on Blue Frame Third, because apparently Blue Frame Second was TOO COOL.

33w4n05.jpg

Think this is bad? Check out Raigo Gundam.

2uo50k2.jpg

Fun doesn't stop there. Check out Speculum Raigo Gundam.

11slgkj.jpg

After Frame Astrays was done eviscerating Blue Frame, they went on to VS Astrays, where they revise(trans: rearrange pieces into different parts of the body) and recolor (trans: pick the three ugliest color combination possible) popular CE designs into shit. ...Well, okay, a good amount are already bad, but meh.

Wow those are pretty bad. I was wondering wtf was going on with the Providence look-alike. What happened to the awesome models though like the Gold Frame?

Well...for Gold Frame normal, I have to recommend that you buy a Red Frame model kit and paint it. The normal Gold Frame kit was a repaint limited edition exclusive, AFAIK. But there's a 1/100 Gold Frame Amatsu kit. Looks great with the gloss black. It should generally be available in major Gundam kit retailers in Japan. http://dalong.net/review/seed/d113/d113_p.htm
