The Original Shoot-Em-Up Omega Five Official Thread

Wow. I got this game just to play co-op with my wife and I was just hoping it wasn't too mediocre to make it a fun experience. Well we started playing it and it was "omg this is so awesome! Wait, we're dead already!?" Great controls, smooth animation, and the whole game just sort of clicks.

We died a lot in the beginning. I think it took us 8 tries to get to the second stage together, where we died quickly. Then we were able to consistently pass the first stage without dying but that second level is still owning us. Going to play again today after work to see how far we can get.

I really like it that it's not infinite continues, it would have really killed the motivation to actually avoid things and work together.

ziff's campaign against awesome 2d action games continues. too hardcore for its own good? it makes all kinds of compromises for a general audience -- you can take several hits, there are health pickups everywhere, your health is restored at the beginning of each level, and bombs are plentiful. it's a given that game journalists can't write, but what use are they if they can't play videogames either?

the devs themselves said it was for a hardcore audience. 1up has some of the most weaksauce gamers reviewing games.

I'd like to point out a few great scoring opportunities with this game:

-You can chain certain objects during boss fights(like the debris in stage 3, the rocks during stage 4, etc)
-Since you don't get a bonus for killing a boss as fast as possible you can sit around and take a few minutes to milk objects.
-Once you max out the chain you can take out the boss with a x10 multiplier and get a monster bonus.

Also it's kind of minor but you can get the perfect bonus even if you take a few hits...as long as you have full health when you beat the boss.

I haven't tried any of this stuff(mainly because I'm no good at it) but I figure stuff like this will be fun to try out for the folks reaching for the top of the leaderboards.

I still have one achievement to go(reflect a bunch of bullets).

how would that work if there are no health power-ups available during a boss fight? once you get hit, that's pretty much it for health.

Well I guess you can't get hit during the boss.
During the stage is fine though.

oh.. so you're saying that for the "perfect" bonus, you have to clear the stage up until the boss battle without getting hit?

No that's the thing. You can get hit, the only catch is you have to make sure to grab the healing items before the boss fight so you're up to full health and you don't take a hit while fighting the boss.

I just figured it a minor thing because the Perfect bonus is only 10,000 points(and people playing Arcade++ will get it anyway...well they'd have to)

Well I've invested about 3 hours in this game, and I can already reach the last stage without dying.

But the kicker is that after 3 hours, you unlock 8(!) credits. 5 was already plenty to beat the game. Again complaints of this being to hard by 1up are more and more of a joke by the minute.

I got the Ruby anchor achievement on the monkey robot. Just attach yourself and don't shoot or move too far or fast and you should get it.

Picked this game up after playing the demo last night. Was better than the reviews i've read, I thought so anyway. No online co-op sucks, but thats the biggest issue so far. Not a bad use of $10......

Its easy on stage 3 as well, just latch on to one of those 3 pronged mini-bosses and wait for it.

Keep playing, it'll eventually give you unlimited credits.

I'm guessing you mean there are 9400 people on the leaderboards. That's kinda meh but it is the first two days, and all XBLA games have been low on sales lately.

I wasn't sure if the boss time was important at all, but it's nice to hear that pointed out for sure. I definitely need to milk them more.

It's not possible to carry a full chain through all the levels, right? It seems like each stage has segments that forces you to break your combo.

Has the story mentioned what Omega Five actually means? I see there are three characters and four stages. So it can't be in relation to any of those things.

Which brings me to my second question. Is there a story?

what I can gather:

aliens are starting shit. there are some big ones and small ones and ones that make others.

yeah an argument is that XBLA is starting to hit saturation, expecially in certain genres and because you cant trade em back your old ones hang around a lot longer.

Guess the sales are ok for the first couple of days but I dont think the word is getting out about the game, GAFs impressions seem really possitive on this game but doubt word is getting out for people to try.

Love it, gona try and get through with the Samuri & Dog dude tomorrow, I still need to 1cred it, I should get close with lots of repitition and no silly mistakes.

yeah boo.... Gripshift is another awesome game, MS shooting themselves in the foot by releasing to many clones or just shit sub par stuff on XBLA is maybe having the blowback of people not really seeing the gems that standout.

Need to really work on getting the Retro mode and female annoucer in this game, anyone got any times on how long it takes to complete (or each level), I just get so completly into it I loose all sence of time completly, I honestly couldnt say if its been 5mins or 25.

Naw, many people just don't care and would rather buy another famous retro game like Sensible World of Soccer. Not to mention that new games like Switchball, Undertow, Gripshift, Omega Five and the like never do get much advertisements, so only a relatively little group of the XBLA fan base are actually aware that such titles even exist.

There are 5 characters. The two you start with, the two you unlock when you beat it with each of the starting characters, and one of the characters you unlock
has a dog
. There you go, Omega Five.

And you can have a x10 multiplier with the 3rd boss cause of all the falling trash, giving you about a third of a million points. I also got upto 4x multiplier against the final boss. If you can figure how to get the x10 multipler going for him, that'd be half a million points instead of the usual 50k.

also anyone know how you get the x30 mulitplayer? (thought x10 was max)

I was watching a Challenge mode replay and someone was wraking in the pointage.

Ok, what the heck is up with this game's scoring system? Or maybe I just suck.

I can get to the 3rd boss no problem, but my score is never higher than 150k! Meanwhile my buddies on the rankings are at 810k but only barely past the 1st level.

Help?

when you die so does you score.

If you just do a one cred run then dont continue and let your score upload maybe it will be a little different

wat

ok, looks like a 1 cred run for me then.

FInally was able to beat the game. Beat the final boss on my last [of 5] credits, with zero health left! :lol

It.. sort of just finished. I'll definitely go back to it but it would have been cool to have some rediculous, crazy ending on the characters in a Marvel Vs. Capcom fashion. Ah well.

I do like how it sort of straddles the line between Rediculous Arcade game which is stupidly hard to get your quarters [well, anything really] and a much easier to play game which realises you're not throwing quarters in every two seconds and made it more accessible to general game players [Tyrian WHICH NEEDS A XBLA PORT :)]

Just completed this... Sensei is badass! :lol

Oddly I didn't lose a single life other than on the 3rd boss... where I lost 4! Any trick to that guy? Debris kept owning me.

Yep. That's how I got over you on the leaderboards:D Ran through the first level and a chunk of the second on a single player. Weirdly, I still haven't finished the second level.

i eventually downloaded the demo, i'm so buying it!

The game gave me a strange feeling though, it might be due to the fact i'm a complete smup n00b but i hadn't been able to fully understand how the weapons (mainly the chain thing) and the score system worked.
But i got a nice old school vibe (with insane graphics too!!) so who gives a fuck! :lol

One thing i deeply miss though is a bit of extras like some silly story and a gallery full of illustrations and art stuff... But for 9 euros i can't complain too much!

First stage, start shooting and try to dodge debris and the blades (they'll peak at the sides before coming down to cut you). When he starts doing the rotating thing, just focus on the trash, slip through when the blades stop cutting. When the yellow dot is on the top, go nuts. Use some bombs.

Yeah, when it was at the top was the best time I found to damage him. I suppose patience is the key here, just ignoring him while he's spinning and concentrating on taking out the debris.

Ive now doubled your score, down to the samurai and his lord of badasses dog. Almost 1creded it but went into the last boss low on health (bloody green lazers) and then got headbutted, bastard.

Will try again tho, need to unlock that retro mode, then the female announcer :D

oh I timed it too took round 25 mins from start to finish

Bah, I managed to get to the last stage but was positioned in completely the wrong place when all the train things turned up. Still, the tactics for the 3rd boss worked perfectly, thanks lakeearth.

unlocked everything, so much fun.

Retro mode is awesome, really is like a Mega CD game.

Male Voice > Female Voice

This has been such a surprise, had so much fun and gonna keep playing, ill have to get a bud over to try multi player out. 11 friends on my scoreboard too, tho more people NEED to check out this game.

Picked this up yesterday and put about 3 hours into it so far, about half of which was co-op. I'm really enjoying it, it's well worth the price.

The main difference I noticed in co-op (at least with Ruby) I was able to be a lot more liberal with the option, and latch onto more guys for longer periods of time, while my co-op partner watched my back. It does make certain sections easier, although having to share credits offsets that a little.

There can be some confusion with two players if you're both the same character with the same weapon type... we only made that mistake once and never again.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to hitting the single player a little more tonight and trying to 1CC this thing.
