The PlayStation Vita In 2011-2012

I almost want to import one myself. So hyped for this and its lineup. I'm extremely relieved that this is region-free...

@yosp I will be importing one plus getting a second one when it launches in the uk. so you will get 2 sales from me.

yosp Shuhei Yoshida
@SnowHawk88 Thanks! You are like me when I used to live in the US ;)
Hahaha! That's great. Yoshida is like a boss.

RE: Monster Hunter...

i've been thinking - i had a hissy fit when MH3rd was announced for PSP as i was in desperate need of a true next gen MH. We didn't get it - i played MH3rd and all was fine.

This time around i sort of expected it on the Vita, but it went to 3DS - again, i'll play it and all will be fine

BUT

after seeing Dragons Dogma it seems pretty damned in your face that this could be a single player trial run for Monster Hunter... right? I mean - the field quest -was- pretty much a monster hunter level (though the dungeon quest was more demons souls-y).

So i was thinking....

perhaps given that MH has pretty much looked nigh on the same since Monster Hunter 1 (okay it's got a bit prettier but the base engine hasn't shifted) then i wonder if MH running on the current engine would simply look too out of place on the Vita.

In short... are we going to get a new multiplatform -new FW2.x based engine- Monster Hunter stream where the supported plats are PC, X360, Wii U, PS3 and Vita and the current MH stream on the 3DS?

I will add in - some of the Monster Hunter 4 gameplay change elements are already in the Dragon Dogma engine and are largely organic rather than scripted (being able to jump up onto a large enemy, ability to climb up certain parts of a beast etc)

It strikes me as odd that Capcom would be willing to put their largest internal team ever on Dragon's Dogma and they expect 1.5million sales from it, but seem stubborn in their refusal to do a HD current gen Monster Hunter to the same extent when they could probably get at least those sales from the PS3 in Japan and PS360 everywell else. Adding a Vita sku would probably blow DD out the water.

I would like this for the Western launch.

Looks surprisingly good, much better than I thought it would after watching the trailer. The speed and style of the gameplay is more like God Eater than MH imo. I like.

the PS4 gen should be safe under his watch judging from this Vita pre launch

Yep. And he's telling the absolute truth as well. Kotaku did an in-depth article on the buttons and the D-pad of the Vita.

The article?

Sounds great to me. I'm not a fan of the PS3's d-pad, especially for prolonged fighting game usage.

You know what this reminds me of? Those commercials of gadgets where the fine text on the bottom of the tv say "screen image simulated".

But here...it's not...it's just...immaculate.

They better not forget to advertise the magical OLED. They seem to have even the iPad 2 beat.

only that by the time it releases in North America, it will be within the same window of iPad 3 with a retina display.

That said, it's almost generations apart from the 3DS screen. It's almost embarrassing.

Now that Kaz is promoted, is Yoshida basically in charge of the PS division? Good if true, he seems to really understand and enjoy videogames, unlike Kaz who always seemed like just another suit.

I'm struggling to find anything wrong about the Vita.

I think the ipod touch is a more analogous product. Both similar size and similar capabilities, but one focuses more on games and the other more on multimedia.

Andrew House (former head of SCEE) is the new head of SCEI.

Hopefully he has as good of a relationship with Yoshida, and allows him to influence as much of their software/hardware decisions, as Kaz did.

Sony's first party offering is still way too western focused. Watch again as besides Minna no Golf 6, the third party offerings outsell the first party stuff.

This is cool. PSP Go's buttons are really nice, I don't like the unit itself, but the buttons are a clear step up from the older systems.

Uncharted is gonna be the best selling game.

Besides HSG6

Everyone going OMG that screen... well, I keep reading... "no matter how good you think it is in screens... its amazing in real life".

I've yet to see one; but I can't wait to be wowed.

Yeah, I should mention that I'm talking about Japan only. Personally I can think of games like Dynasty Warriors and Ridge Racer doing better than Uncharted too.

US and Europe though, yeah Uncharted will sell the best and maybe a new Call of Duty game too.

One would think Netflix would be a given on this in NA, right? I hope so. It seems like a way better fit on this than 3DS. Battery life would be bad, but I could watch it while having it plugged in and lying in bed at night.

How long did it take them to make a 3DS app? I see it the same happening in this case and it wouldn't surprise me if it makes NA launch, well it's good for me though I probably won't use it much.

Any chance that Sony will announce a "buy it on PS3, get the Vita download version for $9.99"? Cuz man, if they do that... it'd probably be incredibly dumb from a business perspective, but I'd buy ten Vitas to make up for it.

I actually think it be smart from a business perspective. How many people do you think would really buy two versions of a game? Maybe one or two exceptions, but that's about it.

This way, they get $10 that would have otherwise got unspent. Those who planned on buying only the Vita version will spend more if they see the value, and those who don't even want the Vita version can gift the download voucher to their friends. I'm praying for $69.99 (even $79.99) bundle packs.

The problem with the bundling is policing it. If it's a voucher with a PS3 game, two people can buy it at a little over normal price between them.

I don't think Sony would go for the idea of people gifting their free copy to someone else. Though I do see the positives in enticing people to shell out 10 more bucks they otherwise wouldn't have spent to get the Vita version. It'd be much like the Steam philosophy of selling people these huge packs for incredible prices, which people buy even though they're never going to play them. You just spent 70 bucks for what you think is a $400 dollar value, but in reality, with how much you're going to play those things, it was a $20 value.

Same concept. 10 bucks for 40 bucks worth of content, but if you never play the thing it was 10 bucks for zero.

Yeah, the problem arises when you (inevitably) have websites dedicated to selling download vouchers to total strangers. They could sell them for $25 and both buyer and seller win out, but make publishers very unhappy.

I was thinking, since vita game card can be written with patches, save data etc, can't they write some encryption that locked a game card to a specific psn account or psvita hardware id (up to 5 psvita), then after the game is registered to your psn account, you can download it for ps3 or vita.

this only work for vita game card though, so there will be no bluray disc version using this method, and that's fine, ps3 only owner can get the game from psn.

edit: basically it's for vita game upported to ps3 (like Ruin,hd remake etc), not ps3 game downported to vita, if that make sense.

Grain of salt, but SamBishop is claiming on another forum that RE and Lost Planet, along with other Capcom IPs, are coming to Vita. RE is supposedly based on the cancelled RE Portable and is "location-based," whatever that means.

I remember him claiming, or heavily hinting, that PS2 games were coming to PSN and would be playable on PS3 and PSV. I also remember him claiming that PS3 would get a SE PS2 BC solution.

Sony should be making their own monhun clone.

They should've made that for the PSP 3 years ago, but you see SCEJ is the worthless, rotten carcass of SCEWWS. They should've bought 2-3 smaller developers, opened up their own internal RPG studio and recruited top level talent, let SCEA and SCEE help with FW updates, etc etc etc. Better late than never I guess.

Even GT seemed to have lost significant terrain in Japan. They do really need a MH of their own. Those games, along with Pokemon and Mario Kart pretty much sell systems for years to come.

They tried with Invizimals and Modnation. Modnation load times were horrendous and no one wanted to buy that. Invizimals ws only really marketed in EU.

SolidSnakex said:
They develop so many games that it would be impossible to really predict what that'll be. But DC3 would be more of Sony's decision than L5's.

If SCEJ were competent they would have an internal RPG studio and have delivered DC3 already. They would then beg (i.e. moneyhat) L5 to make something like Layton or IE.

Well Sony aren't going to kill the used game market for PSV carts, because Gamestop wouldn't stock the device or games.

Dunno - last RR that sold well from what I remember was 1st one on PSP. Afterwards, everything pretty much bombed (sub 100k) in Japan at least.
And TGS showing is hardly inspiring confidence in Vita version either :P

Sony could do something useful with White Knight Chronicles and turn it into a Vita centered Monster Hunter clone or maybe resurrect an old RPG series and turn that into a Monster Hunter clone. About time we get another Wild Arms or Popolocrois anyway.
they should made new ip for monhun clone, any old ip being revived as monhun clone will only upset fans of the old ip. wkc is probably the closest they can make into monhun.

or, to talk about crazy departure, make patapon 3d action game monhun clone.

In all seriousness, though... that's something I really want in case I need to take the time to grind some levels or need to grind for some drops or something. That'd be really awesome. This device is slowly winning my heart. Custom soundtracks, coupled with the Rayman Origins gameplay video and no region-locking, makes me feel really good about purchasing a Vita now.

They should pay Square to make it. People were speculating that they were making a game that had FF characters and enemies with Monster Hunter inspired gameplay back when rumors were picking up about them doing a game with that style (it turned out to be Lord of Arcana). Sony should fund that project while making sure that it's secured as an exclusive to their systems. It might not be as big as MH, but I can't see how it wouldn't be a big success as long as it turned out to be a good game.

L5 is big enough that they could do both. Sony should only use their internal studios for original RPG's (like they're doing with Oreshika).
