The PlayStation Vita In 2011-2012

So how has Vita been doing in Japan? I've been avoiding a lot of the topics, because I was getting sick of the cynicism that was arising in every single Vita topic, but with a couple of weeks before launch, I'm interested to see how it's doing in Japan?

Not as well as expected, but factors like the Tsunami and strong yen are causing people to go into savings mode, and the Japanese gov't aren't doing anything about it.

It probably has more to do with the software releases so far than the Tsunami.

A lot of games release for the Vita. More so than any other handheld iirc. I don't think software is the issue.
There are no system sellers out there - the competition is strong and you need exclusive system sellers to see a higher priced system.

LOL! is this in your opinion? What console had a stronger launch lineup than that VITA?

Uncharted, Wipeout, Blazblue, UVMC3 - these are the games i have and theyre all pretty fantastic.

Software for Japan is the issue. The Vita should have launched with Tales of Innocence R and Gravity Daze on day one. Uncharted should not have been the flagship title for Japanese launch.

Uncharted, Wipeout, Blazblue, UVMC3 - these are the games i have and theyre all pretty fantastic.

And basically none of those games are popular in Japan, except MAYBE Blazblue.

Around 20-25k as of one month ago iirc (16 days of sales) + PSN sales

I'm surprised it's beating expectations.

Famitsu numbers for PSP ports:

[PSP] Disgaea Portable (Nippon Ichi Software) - 16,517 / 107,169
[PSP] Disgaea 2 Portable (Nippon Ichi Software) - 35,319 / 80,927

Returns is probably half way to Disgaea 2P's LTD and since it was launch will have legs.

And basically none of those games are popular in Japan, except MAYBE Blazblue.

Uncharted sold better than BlazBlue in Japan.

It's not a criticism of quality, it's a criticism of commercial appeal. 3DS launched with Nintendogs, and Layton - both franchises are larger than everything at Vita's launch.

Which verifies that conern of mine, I guess. BlazBlue doesn't mean shit to the japanese lol.

Vita launch lineup is pretty much unprecedented in the west. For Japan, it's one of the worst launch lineups in a long time. Maybe only slightly better than stuff like Xbox, PS3 and Xbox 360 thanks to the presence of Minna no Golf 6.

And then looking at the Vita launch...

I seriously think Vita beat the hell out of DS, PSP, 3DS.

According to playstation.com FIFA, Virtua Tennis, Army Corps of Hell, & Katamari don't hit until the 22nd. The same goes for all the PSN exclusive titles. Now I'll be stuck playing Uncharted & Hot Shots Golf for a week.

You can't pit non-system sellers against killer apps and expect them to come out victorious. The 3 biggest 3DS titles launched launched around a month's timeframe prior to Vita, sucking dry general consumer interest for pretty much anything else. You could say titles like Labyrinth and Ace Combat were victims of this as well to some extent. In the context of the US market it'd be like lining up the release of your mid-tier brand shooter alongside Call of Duty.

I never said Vita has no good games, don`t be so defensive. No one gives a damn about Wipeout in Japan especially if you need a 25K system to play it.

But i dont think this is the right topic for this discussion ;-)

In North America? I think there's something wrong there when I know FIFA is definitely coming on the early release date.

Ooh seeing your avatar reminded me, where's the vita version of Loco Roco.

I would of thought it a no-brainer to make use of the accelerometer for tilting and those colourful characters would certainly pop on that screen.

I told Yoshida it would be nice to have a new LocoRoco on Vita, he said it would be nice too. :D

He also said some of the staff were working on Gravity Daze/Rush. :(

Thank Goodness!

I want Loco Roco & Patapon on my OLED!

Interesting so Team Kuono were helping Team Toyama on Gravity Daze..SCE Japan Studio doing something right for once..who even thought about that happening.

I guess what left of Team Ico now will be helping on other teams now (instead of just doing nothing) since their leader and protector ran away.

Im not defensive, i just dont agree with you at all. Also, since when is $250 a "higher priced system" - i dont think its that expensive at all. Whether sales havent been good or not (Doesnt really affect me at this stage) - the vita is a lot more attractive to me than a 3DS.

Ive owned a Vita now for about a month and its a really nice system. I played with a 3DS for about a month and i really didnt like it. I played Mario, Zelda and Starfox and these all had terrible graphics and the 3D effect gets old really quickly.

To me, there are about 10 or so games coming out in the next 2 months that i will get on the VIta and that to me is an impressive launch window.

The discussion was about the japanese market and why the Vita is selling the way it is right now, i don`t see what this has to do with your personal enjoyment. 25k yen is 10k yen more than the competition, with big software releases backin it up.

Or am i missing something ?

Yea, I don't see the problem here, there is a reason it's not selling as much and it's because the competition offers better choices for the Japanese audience at a lower price, that doesn't say the launch line-up was bad or anything.

Rather nice of Amazon to upgrade my preorder to the bundle for the same price for the 3g version.
Still undecided if I will keep the preorder though.

SCEJ doesn't have teams outside of Ico. I've been told that staff moves on from different projects and the like. There isn't always a Team Siren or Ape Team running as the staff will help out on other SCEJ projects. It's a testament to how small SCEJ is.

polyphony digital?

polyphony digital?

Polyphony operates outside of Japan Studio. They have their own studio in a different building in Japan. Japan Studio proper acts like Sony Santa Monica does as a hub for a huge chunk of that locale's SCE output. The difference comes from the sheer amount of staff behind Santa Monica compared to Japan, and the fact they probably have a God of War team working all the time.

I'm making the Gravity Daze OT right now and am thinking of using a French subtitle - "Cie la Vita" (This is Vita) for the title. It's a cute play on "Cie la vie" (This is life). In some languages Vita means life. I thought it was a swell title since Gravity Daze is inspired by French art, and the characters themselves speak in French.

Are you sure they speak French? I read that somewhere, but when I listen to the VA in the various trailers it sounds like gibberish to me. And I have French family too (that I can't understand lol, but the game doesn't sound French at all).

I'd say go for it, but I'm worried SCEA is going to take out the Frenchness for the Lulz.

I remember the first Siren having a particularly bad dub. All the obviously Japanese characters talking like cockneys (think Dick Van Dyke from Mary Poppins).

Not bad you should use this in OT I found on Kotaku. I was using photoshop to color it but I'm really busy now

It doesn't mean anything.
