The PlayStation Vita In 2011-2012

Not sure exactly where to put this (if I had the privelege, I would make a thread pertaining to terrible ideas for commercials), but here goes.

We all know that Sony sometimes has trouble marketing devices. Anyone who remembers the launches of their current systems might recall crying baby dolls and street-cultured squirrels. I thought I'd get the jump on Sony this time and come up with a terrible Vita commercial all on my own.

The scene opens on a grown man (for this example, imagine Michael Cera) wearing comically age-inappropriate clothing (for example, footie pajamas and a dress-up cowboy hat). A stern woman's voice says "Mikey, you need to take your Vita-mins!". (Note this is pronounced like Vita.) The man says "Yes, Mommy!" and the camera cuts to the palm of his hand, in which sits a pill-sized Vita. He swallows the Vita, and an antenna rises out of his head. The camera zooms in on his eyes as his pupils widen, and within them we see snippets of Vita's games, OS and social interactivity. His pupils contract as the camera zooms out, and the man is now wearing a fashionable suit and hairstyle. It cuts to a black screen with the Vita logo, as a seductive voice whispers "Live it."

Edit: Well, lucky that the guy above me posted when he did!

I think they both sold around 4-5 million and it was relatively early in the psp's life. COD is different though, how many people will sit around at night with their handhelds and use wifi to play online while their console COD is 10 feet away?

It could be huge but I don't see why millions would buy it.
Exactly. Peopleare more used to play online games on their consoles, I really don't think CoD Vita could achieve same or near success as console counterparts.

But I can see CoD Vita could be a real phenomenon among teenage boys between 10-15. They are the ones that bought and played DS versions, and with more online capabilties CoD Vita could be next Pokémon. I'm exaggerating, though.

Vita lineup looks great to me. Though I think $250 is still too much, I could get a PS3 for that price. I may hold off on buying handhelds and see how things develop. Also in regards to Call of Duty, I don't really see it being a big deal on a handheld but hey I guess anything is possible.

Disgaea 3 Returns is called Disgaea 3: Absence of Detention.

Also Dungeon Hunter Alliance is called Dark Quest in Japan.

Great OP, nice work!

The irony of CoD on Vita is that the online could actually be better on this platform versus the PS3. Unless Sony is going to finally start implementing the online features for the Vita onto the PS3.

Chances are still slim to none in both cases though.
Not that I disagree with you, but Capcom has released the original PW on the iPhone/iPod Touch, so I really don't see the problem with the VITA getting a port of the original.

Maybe even through Playstation Suite, so it could be compatible with other android phones.

I was originally curious with how developers would handle the high cost of assets and development for a handheld platform.

It seems that they've gone the PC route of "assets and production may vary" which is a-okay by me.

How close could they get to replicating MLB The Show, graphics and animation wise? Any reason to see cutbacks when they do release it?!

Monster Hunter in Japan became popular because people there actually go outside and play video games with each other. Sort of like how we used to have LAN parties in the West. But we don't have those any more because of online play.

I could see this possibly happening in the West, but I don't think Call of Duty would do it. It's far too entrenched on consoles. Sony needs their own, original IP, that was only on the Vita.

But instead, they've just decided to go with PS3 spinoffs, basically aiming the Vita at people who have a PS3 and are fans of PS3 franchises.

Is there any chance Vita could get Layton or Pheonix Wright?

The PSP easily could have gotten Phoenix Wright. The series did start on the GBA, after all, and it got Harvey Birdman, which played exactly like Phoenix Wright. But Capcom didn't want to.

Well, if the PSP version is anything to go by, they will do a half-assed version. There was no reason it had to be as gimped as it was, but it was anyway.

And forget about any improvements once the PS4 comes out. Heck, with the PSP version, they actually removed features (online play) rather than add.

GTA games were essentially re-purposed ports of their console brethren. Same with Portable Ops, which released 2-3 years into the PSP's life and Crisis Core launched 3-4 years into the systems life.

Man, I couldn't disagree with this more. Especially Vice City Stories with it's empire-building system.

Portable Ops and Crisis Core are wholly original games. If you take issue with these, you have to admit that you're just hating.

I don't see the problems with PS3 spin offs especially for launch , it's not like it's 100% guaranteed a new IP will sell and you say it like its a bad thing, how do you introduce your fans to your new hardware if you don't have something known and loved by them, it's not like Sony's first party offering is only made of spin-offs either plus the only ones I consider spin offs myself are probably Resistance or maybe Killzone, Golden Abyss seems to fit nicely in ND's timeline and seem to be a complete entry in the series with ND's Amy Hennig being one of the writers of the game's story, HSG6 is the next numbered title in the HSG series, Wipeout 2048 is the prequel to Wipeout HD and so on.

Year one of a system isn't about expanding the audience, it's about appealing to your core user base in a rush to build an install base so you can entice publishers and reduce production costs so you can later market to people new to the brand.

Games am interested in

1.Ragnarok Odyssey(I just found out about this game, sending monster flying looks like a lot of fun strange mix between monhun and Avalon Code) , my new most wanted vita game.

2.gravity dayz

The rest are just ports or sequels to games i have no interest in.

Exactly! So many new IPs on Sony's first party offering as well, Escape Plan, Gravity,Broken(hope that's not vaporware), That Little deviant bs, Sound Shapes etc.

This thread along with the Vita OS thread - so good. The hype train for Vita's launch has arrived early.

No kidding, they are both better then most of the stuff on gaming websites.

I was going to reply but I found a picture of the poster.

I'm interested in Ragnarok Odyssey just because of gamearts, I'm also interested to Lord of Apocalypse since the trailer music is great and have unique artstyle. I'm only going to buy one of these since they seem to be the same genre (hunting action?). too bad God Eater 2 is psp, I just started playing GE1 and like it so far.

Gravity DAze, Uncharted and Hot Shot Golf are must buy, same with various HD remake, I'm gonna buy them on Vita as opposed to PS3.

This is why I think the Vita will do very well in its first year or so much like the psp did. There is a core market ready to buy the Vita and for the most part (judging by Gaf and talking to other gamers) the Vita meets and exceeds this market's expectations. My question is if it can appeal beyond these initial buyers?

What's funny is that my most anticipated title might just be Sound Shapes, everything about it looks great. Might just be the Vita's LocoRoco.

I'm looking forward to ZOE, I have never played the second one. Peace walker too, it'll save me from buying the PSP game.

That's in my top 3 for sure. But it can't top Gravity Daze.

My love for Vita is growing bigger every day, I think it's time to invest in portable gaming again...

It's been a long time for me (since Game Boy Pocket)

That, I did not know about. Chances would be very likely then for the reasons you specified.

My number one regret for my hobby (being gaming, of course) is that NA is not getting the Vita this year. I am so, so, SO ready for this little portable.

I am having a rough time talking myself out of importing one this winter. I really don't want to pay $350-400 (which it will be that much or more to import one) just to get the hardware but I also don't want to wait until freaking March (just guessing about the NA launch) to get to own one.

Decisions, decisions. I pretty much love everything Sony is going with the Vita I'm just disappointed that I can't have one right now.

StuBurns said:
I'm surprised so many people are importing. The wait is so short, and the Japan launch line up isn't exactly fantastic.
Yeah. I'm not seeing the point. Three month wait at most (assuming they want to launch in all territories by the end of this fiscal year).

Resistance being a launch title has me more excited about that game. I wasn't too impressed with the E3 demo, but online support at launch is a big deal for me. Especially since Uncharted probably won't.

I agree, off that launch list only uncharted and blazblue I would get, so i'm more than happy to wait and see what we get launch in NA/EU . plus more time to save.

I hope they don't. I hope they port the game in the exact existing form so we can play against people on the PS3 versions.

They could do what Wipeout is doing, original single player and cross platform multiplayer.

Is there any hope left that Vita might launch in the West this year? It doesn't make sense that Resistance is coming out in December but isn't a launch title since there's only one more week left in the year after the week Vita is released (and no way is it being launched on New Year's Eve). Why launch with Uncharted and Resistance in Japan and have them spoiled for the real fanbase in the West? People seem to care about the storylines in these series.

Four or five must have titles for me on that list, with another few I'm legitimately interested in.

Still unsure of when I'll actually be getting the Vita. Maybe I'll hold off until all the games I want are out and buy them altogether.

Oh and great work on the thread. Didn't even know some of these games existed.

I very much doubt it. Also, the Vita launch seems too bloated for my liking. A lot of games are going to get overlooked.

You mean party chat? Won't make it to PS3, not enough RAM, already confirmed.
