The Unpopular Opinions Thread: GAMING EDITION

Well, I guess someone never saw the Jaguar controller.

The only thing I think is bad with the 360 controller is the D-pad, and that will be corrected in the new design they'll release soon right? Otherwise it's pretty good. It feels good in my hands, the analog sticks have pretty good resistance etc.

Well, I've never used a jaguar before. I don't even think they've came out here in Australia lol.

I guess it's because of the main genres I play on consoles which are jrpgs, fighters and action games(NG, DMC etc). I generally find the 360 a horrible controller due to the rock hard curved buttons, abysmal d pad and the bumpers. I can see why people like the controller for the racers and fps, but it does nothing for me, since I play fps on PC.

Granted, the PS3 DS isn't perfect, and I still prefer the Dual Shock 2's L2 and R2 buttons over those shitty triggers in the DS3.

I guess I'm just one of those rare people who likes the Dual shock design.

I feel RPG are the most boring, skilless wastes of time imaginable.

I'm sorry, but spending 60 plus hours pressing X/A button to a usually a bad, drawn out story is REALLY boring

It was released there. Most of the places it was released you might doubt its existence, since no one bought one. I remember seeing them here in Canada in really weird indie computer stores in the early 90s and thats it.

Fable 2 is the worst console game this generation that received praised and hype when it was a 100% rock solid turd in every way possible without being an actual piece of fecal matter.

Metal Gear Online is the best console multiplayer experience this generation for the sheer fun and options in the gameplay.

Final Fantasy 12 sucked. Horrible dialogue, horrible cast of characters, horrible plot, unimaginative areas, and its one saving grace is the battle system was towards the fun side.

But enough about JRPGs. Try WRPGs instead.

Aw, Jarrod, whatchoo talkin' about?

Whoever you are, stop stalking me!

I dont really understand the whole East Vs. West game development thing. How can anybody side with one as being truly more innovative or original? Looking at the line-ups from both sides of the world and its easy to spot uncreative garbage, yet its just as easy to spot the more creative stuff.

The output from both is mixed. Always has been and always will be.

  • Halo gameplay is fun, but Master Chief is the lamest character ever
So very true.

The character is a lame joke and the name 'Master Chief' is fucking retarded. I laugh every time someone takes that character seriously.

However, when I play the games it doesn't really matter because the gameplay is so good.

Kane & Lynch 2 isnt that bad. The presentation is really good. Everyone should get it for five bucks on Steam now, its worth that money.

I'm just sad I didn't find this thread until it reached its 11th page.

- Racing games aren't fun, including Mario Kart

- Games where you have to shoot in 3D space (I.e. where you have independent movement and aiming) are unfun and frustrating, an experience made worse by substandard control methods like analog stick aiming. Because of this, I find myself loving the Metroid Prime games right up until the moment I have to fight something. Then I just want the not-fun to stop so I can get right back to exploring. I don't like this particular mechanic (shooting in 3D space) and I want fewer games to rely on it so heavily.

- Fighting games aren't fun, including Super Smash Bros.

- Tingle is one of the greatest video game characters ever created.

- My masculinity is not threatened by cuteness or beauty.

- Voice acting is usually detrimental to immersion in games and often prevent my taking the story at face value. This is partly because of unnecessary exposition, partly because it sounds less natural spoken than read and partly because the subtle voice cues and accents you might get in an animated movie are absent from dubbed material made in the US.

- I don't find competition fun. At all.

- Online play is at best irrelevant to me and at worst an active distraction for devs working on games I enjoy. I don't care to interact with obnoxious teenagers and loud braggarts in real life - why would I want to seek them out during my leisure time?

- Dual analog sticks deserve to be relegated to the dustbin of history. Suboptimal, un-ergonomic, counter-intuitive and unresponsive are all words I'd use to describe this scheme. Mouselook, touchpads and pointers are all far better schemes and you change-fearing zealots had better get used to it.

- Handhelds > consoles.

- Demon Souls bored me. It has a been there, done that feel to it.
- Rock 'n Roll Racing is tied with Mario Kart 64 as the best racing games ever.
- Heavy Rain is a guilty pleasure of mine. I genuinely enjoyed the experience on multiple playthroughs.
- This may shock some, never played a Halo or CoD game. Ever. I also find their respective marketing campaigns to be nauseating and extremely overdone. Outside of Goldeneye and certain Wii titles, the PC is where it's at for the fps genre, nothing beats the m/k, nothing.
- The Gran Turismo series is fucking boring.
- The Wii is my most played system of the generation. So many underrated games.

FPS are the worst type of games ever to have been created in the Gaming Industry.
"Cinematic" games suck.
SOTC and MGS3 have virtually no redeemable value (i never get the constant gushing over them).
Water Temples are awesome.
Online Multiplayer (with the exception of mmorpgs), is boring.

Same, fixed at the last part. :D :D :D

I don't really play FPS except a very lucky few. And I did like Heavy Rain okay, enough to get platinum for it. ;)

So by going from this post... you hate gaming as a whole

Achievements and trophies mean nothing to me. I have never once tried to get an achievement on purpose.

If I get an achievement it is by total accident and I get pissed off at an annoying pop up message.

Achievements are the dumbest shit ever and people that care about them are the sheeple of the gaming world.

Most of this thus far has been "I CAN'T BELIEVE I GET TO POST THIS ON GAF *hyperbole hyperbole hyperbole* HAHA STOP ME NOW, MASSES"

I mean, I'm sure it's cathartic, but I kinda wish this thread wouldn't dead-end at channeling your inner-14 year old and swing around to giving people an opportunity to make their case for opinions that might be considered unwelcome in official threads.

Shocking Alberto is not reasonable at all.

There I said it! Muahahahaha!

I agree with you.

You do know that you can easily turn off those notices correct?

I like the sound of Japanese Snake voice (Akio Ohtsuka) more than David Hayter version. I can only understand the Hayter one though.

Also, despite the fact it is fine that people can play games any way the game permits, I think people playing Smash Bros. Brawl "tournament-competitively" are just going about it the wrong way. That game is about the items, randomness, and "wet & wild" kind of fun.

Absolutely not. I LOVE gaming, maybe even a little too much. What I hate are just some of the genres that have come to dominate among my demographic and the pseudo-macho mindset that seems to pervade it.

Games are but toys. I, at least, have the clarity of thought to call my dolls by their rightful names whereas everybody else insists that they only play with action figures.

I see a lot of people rightfully calling Rez a bad game, but I don't see a lot of people criticizing the Panzer Dragoon games. Orta in particular is very slow, boring, and compared to the rest of the series, ugly.

Yeah, this is where things go off the rails.

It becomes less "What opinion do I have that is not really mainstream?" and more "SUCK ON THESE EGGS, GAF, WOOOOOOOOO"

Street Fighter IV was a huge disappointment - It was essentially Street Fighter Alpha 2 but not as good and in 3D. In other words Capcom simply too the tired and true Street Fighter formula and added in 3D graphics (note: I haven't played Super).

Street Fighter III: Third Strike is still by far Capcom's best fighting game - Fantastic presentation, complex yet easy to get into gameplay, and just all around awesome. The only thing I found wrong with it was the balance.

Many 3D games from ten years ago or more had far more depth in level design than 3D games today - Just look at that FPS map example. 3D games today rely way to much on hand holding and cutscenes. Remember Half-Life and Deus Ex? Remember how much of the problem solving was involved doing things such as scouting an area to find how you can interact with the environment to progress? I was still shocked at the thing those two games made me do. Finding crates and chairs to stack to climb into vents or ledges, or to throw them on the ground to break your fall, etc (I can go into MUCH MUCH more detail but I'd be typing forever). Todays games are just so primitive.

Odin Sphere was an incredible game with a very deep battle system. One of the PS2's best - I have no idea what the hell GAF's problem with this game is. It was widely acclaimed on most RPG sites (praising the battle system) and was overall a very fun game with an addictive and interesting battle system (to me at least). I still can't believe that people think that the game was more or less a super slow version of Muramasa. Did people even bother to read the tutorials in the beginning of the game?

Devil May Cry 4 is the best in the series - More balanced gameplay, better bosses, more epic, I don't know what GAF's problem is with this game. I played DMC3, then DMC4, then DMC3 again. I don't understand how 4 isn't the far superior game.

Metal Gear Solid 2 is better than Metal Gear Solid - Were people that annoyed by Raiden?

Rare's platformers (SNES to N64) were all far far superior to their Nintendo counterparts (DKC > SM (excluding YI), Banjo-Kazooie > SM64). - I always felt that RARE just took what Nintendo did and improved it. Super Mario World introduced a colorful world full of awesome collectibles, precise platforming, variety in level design, a nice animal to ride on, and Donkey Kong Country just did all that, and more, and better. Super Mario 64 practically introduced non-first person 3D platforming, was huge on the adventure aspect, involved collecting a share of items, etc. Banjo-Kazooie did all of that but to a far bigger magnitude.

The Super Nintendo had a very shitty hardware design (due to one colossal gimp) - The CPU was an embarrassment. It the system had a last generation CPU with a current generation everything else. It was ridiculous.

Motion controls are the future - it's just that hardly any developers have given them the chance.

Media devices (I.E. iOS devices, Android devices, Windows mobile, etc. will soon be big players in the hobbyist gaming space). - It's only a matter of time before gamers who have these devices develop a sweet tooth to play their console games on these devices and a manufacture delivers.

Conker's Bad Fur Day is the most impressive game ever released for a console from a technical standpoint - Tons of voice acting, Dreamcast looking graphics, orchestral score, surround sound, four screen multiplayer, all on the Nintendo 64 WITHOUT the RAM add-on.

2D games using polygonal models (2.5D) almost always look like shit - Because they do.

The "power race" is pretty much over - Do I really need to explain this?

Fallout 2 and Planescape Torment, while being great and deep games, are unpolished as all hell - People claim that there are few games that dared to go so far into the RPG genre. And as a result few games have improved on what these games have done. These games are over ten years old and were amongst the first (and only) of their kind. Of course they'll be a bit rough around the edges.

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion is a terrible game with shitty gameplay - Nintendo 64 A.I. NPC's, horribly designed map, shit difficulty curve, and just...BORING.

-Phantasy star II to IV are pretty much unplayable today. Out of those games, III is the best, though.

OK, this is probably the most insane thing I've read in this thread.

3rd Strike is a good game but possibly the most overrated fighting game out there, I can't stand the people that go on about it like it's the only game ever made and how they feel Parrying will magically fix every broken fighting game.

Mortal Kombat sucks. I played the games a lot when i was younger but thats mainly because i didnt know better when it comes to fighting games. I am however looking forward for the new one.

Killer Instinc is fun for like 30 minutes.

Guess I should express mine:

I think Majora's Mask is the worst Zelda. The dungeons/puzzles are everything in a Zelda game and only having four of them (with all but the fourth one being boring). By contrast, LttP is my favorite because it's pretty much nothing but dungeons.

The scoring system in Rock Band/Guitar Hero is terrible, terrible idea. Hey Harmonix, since you already took the basic gameplay from Konami, maybe you should have taken their superior scoring system too?

WRPGs have stagnated with the whole Medieval JRR Tolken bullshit setting since way back in the Ultima days. Say what you want about Bioware, but at least they try to mix up their main settings. There are a ton of pen-and-paper RPGs with unique settings, can't developers follow suit?

japan has no fucking clue when it comes to games anymore

outdated, behind the times, and just plain nowhere near the pulse

final fantasy was never good
