The Witcher devs to make a Cyberpunk 2020 game

I'm taking the piss mostly because I feel like it does not need to be an advertisement slogan due to the game itself. People who have been paying attention to CD Projekt since The Witcher will know what to expect, and at the end of the day they are the audience who will play the game aside from the few PnP & cyberpunk geeks such as myself. You can't do perform the something within the genre without delving in to a storyline that contains murder, mystery, and a heck of a lot of grit. It's a practical given - they don't need to tell us.

To be fair, I had certain expectations when I heard 'FASA', 'Shadowrun', and 'PC game' in the same sentence, and those expectations were brutally dashed. So hearing them clearly set out what kind of project this is going to be (including the use of 'mature') is actually sort of comforting.

Kindly elaborate.

Apologies for the slow reply mate.

It makes me uncomfortable because I feel like when devs intentionally put a focus on making sure everyone knows that their game is "mature" it ends up more the opposite and can even distract from the main thrust of a game, the game. Despite very much enjoying The Witcher, I didn't exactly walk away from that experience thinking about how mature and provocative it was, I walked away thinking about what a great game it was. My concerns won't stop me from snagging this one on day one (good dev+cyberpunk=fuck yes), assuming we don't hear it's a broken mess before then.

I'm fairly critical of language, which can be annoying in the video game space considering gamers change definitions of words almost as quickly as they create new ones. My general opinion is there isn't a lot of maturity to be found on planet Earth in the first place, doubly so in the vid game industry. I actually prefer my vid games immature in a hilarious manner. (It's known that I'm not a fan of story in games)

Little known fact: Mike Pondsmith worked on the Matrix Online and Crimson Skies.

CP2020 was my favorite pen-n-paper game. I want them to make it as well.

This generation has been great to the Cyberpunk genre. With Deus Ex turning out great, the Shadowrun series getting a new game, and now Cyberpunk 2020 developed by CDPR - we could end up seeing a larger revival of sorts.

My one wish is for there to be an open world GITS game. That would be amazing, but this and Shadowrun will do just fine.

I want to make out with you... tongue and everything.

As everyone is saying, yes, yes, yes, and more yes. Imagine how good the Collector's Edition is going to be if the Witcher 2 one is anything to by. I want a big fat art book full of cyberpunk goodness.

2020 isn't very cyberpunk.

There's not enough time between then and now for gunmetal trenchcoats and superfluous goggles to become fashionable.

I really hope this sells well (and is good of course), to show developers that RPGs do not need to be dumbed down to be accessible. TW2 EE was a good step in this direction.

Just in time for after I build a PC. Have only played a bit of Witcher 1 but that plus CDP's attitude towards gamers and how theyre hyping this up means that this will be a must buy

Finally, a new developer's take on the world of the future. I've always been keen on games that allow you to explore a futuristic world, but no one has done it quite right for me. The CG videos of Prey 2 was close, but I'm definitely interested in seeing CDProjekt's vision and direction.

Eh, playing up the "mature!1" card like that is kinda silly. If the game is truly mature for mature people, it'll show without PR bulletpoints mentioning it. Not that it's a big deal, though.

Sorry to reply so late after your post, but I think that using the "Mature game/plot etc" as a bullet point will be used more and more going forward in this industry. Videogames are a young entertainment media but are starting to get to a state where their target audience is very well widespread in terms of age. That's wonderful as game developers can then target different kind of audiences with their creations. I have 35 years, I won't stop playing video games. I want this hobby to keep up with me, cater my interests, my growth. I didn't thought that CDPR use of the "mature card" was facetious or just PR BS. It's just what they want to do. The audience they want to please.

When he said "noir," "dark," and then "Blade Runner" MY face did this

Fuck yes.

This is right at the top as far as most anticipated games for me. CD Projekt can do no wrong.

I wonder if it'll hit consoles, and if so, which ones. Next gen visuals from CDPR could be awfully sweet.

It'll come with a cyber monocle.

I'll buy this Day 1. I just hope they are given free reign to update the setting and rework some of the outdated elements. It is a great setting, but it hasn't aged well over time (at least in parts), thus a reboot is needed.

They announced today that Witcher 2 sold 1.7 million across PC and 360. In February 2012, they announced Witcher 2 sold 1.1 million on PC. So 360 sold 600k? Would that be considered bombing for a console?

Source and Source

Most of that increase is probably the PC version, given the huge, week and change sales spike it had at the EE release. Last numbers I heard for the 360 were 250k worldwide out of a shipment of 500k. Not stellar, but I have no clue if they expected more.

I'm just hoping that the PC version of Cyberpunk is prioritized, as was the case with TW2.

Fuck yes! I'd always wondered why Cyberpunk was never adapted to video games the way Shadowrun was and now finally we're getting a game set in the 2020 universe. Which, yeah, given it's now 2012 in reality does seem quite outdated given the insane tech level in the game. We're talking major cybernetic use including full body "brain encased in a combat mech" conversions here. Of course they could just go the 20xx route. I don't care how they do it, just glad they're sticking with 2020 and not v3!

Let's hope they won't go as far as Near Orbit/Deep Space.

It really has to be due to the uncertain nature of the next generation. I expect either a simultaneous PC/360 launch, PC exclusive, or PC first with 720/PS4 to follow a year later. Bottom line really though is that if you want to play a CDProjekt game day 1, the safest bet is to be on PC.

I think this would make sense, especially if the game is fairly early in development. Would look so damn good with next gen systems as the baseline.

Could also see just a PC exclusive if Witcher 2 on 360 really was a bomba (which is disappointing, I'm having a blast with it on 360).
