Things you DON'T like about GTA IV

The lack of mission checkpoints for longer missions piss me off to an extreme level. Such a fucking retarded omission to have in 2008. Drive a long ass way, gun fight, get into another gun fight, fight your way out, try to escape and die in some fluke accident on the road? Guess what, back to the starting line!

ARGH so damned stupid. Yeah, I'm frustrated while posting this, but it's such a no brainer that it's aggrevating that it was left out.

I've never been one to bitch about frame rates, but I played a little burnout and then went back to GTA. Man what a mistake. I know they are different games and I'm not comparing them. I never noticed how bad the frame rate can be but it sure is glaring now.

i know this is crazy but i am kind of bored of of GTAIV already.....yes, i'm doing the missions but slowly (i'm still confined to the first area), apart from that its mostly running around trying to steal good cars and getting into shootouts with the cops

i lost interest with the girlfriend after the first few dates and there are only so many times you can go to the strip club and the mini games are okay

am i missing some key activity that everybody is doing or does it get much better when you go to the other islands?

its really weird because i absolutley loved Vice City and San Andreas......

EDIT: also dying during a mission and having to restart is really annoying, it didnt seem to bother me in the previous games but now it is

Oh, ouch. Yeah, you probably shouldn't have done that. >_<

I would also like to hear from a fan of the game. What is so different about "GTA-Bore" than the previous GTAs?

I'm still forcing my way through the game hoping something new/interesting will turn up, but it's just the same old thing with different faces. All the bad things (controls, basically doing the same thing mission after mission, etc.) from the previous GTAs weren't addressed.

The best I figure is that the people really going crazy over this game didn't play Saints Row or Crackdown where the game play, not tons of cut scenes, made the game fun and interesting.

When they put the 4 on the title I expected something above and beyond the well milked 3 roads.

Instead it feels like GTA3.6.

Asshole...

That's a spoiler...

I hate it when people think the can say "Oh, there's a twist that happens!!!" without spoiling shit.

FUCK!!!

Its pretty much exactly the same missions, except in cooler surroundings. The only standout missions are the bank heist and maybe the crane snipe. I got bored too, the game simply isnt that fun, I dont know why either because I absolutely LOVED vice city and san andreas.

1 thing I hate is driving motorcycles... Especially the missions where you need to drive them, I F*CKIN' HATE THOSE MISSIONS!!!

Thank god there's not much of that

I think the dirt bike - The Sanchez - is the shit. I can whip it around corners with out a problem.

I'm still having fun with the game overall, but this is a complain thread, so here we go - I'm seriously starting to question the sanity of people who say this is the most polished game they've ever played.

1. The controls are...not good. No need to elaborate, it's been done before.
2. I tried to hail a cab yesterday when leaving a bar, and I actually COMPLETELY SOBERED UP before just stealing a car and driving myself. no cabs were stopping for me, and when one finally did, I hit Y and carjacked him instead of getting in the back. I've heard now that I need to HOLD Y instead of just press it, but it was still annoying.
3. I hate motorcycles. Just finished a mission where you're chasing a guy, and there are certain set actions such as other cars getting in wrecks that are made specifically to get you to run into something, and since hitting a twig will throw you 60 feet off the bike, I found myself restarting constantly, ALL THE WAY FROM THE BEGINNING. There is no good reason to have to spend a minute or two each time you restart driving from the guy that gives you the job over TO the job. Especially annoying in cycle missions because the slightest mistake often means you can't catch the guy anymore; I got thrown only about 10 feet once, for instance, but it was over a highway railing down to the ground where I couldn't reach the bike. God forbid I pick back up the chase in one of the dozens of cars around me, no, I have to find a freaking motorcycle to do it on.
4. It still annoys me that "accelerate" in a car and "run" on foot are different buttons. Same with the shooting buttons. For that matter, I've died at least once because I was chasing some guys on a motorcycle while shooting at them, and in the shootout at the very end I got crushed because I got off the cycle and it switched back to my "on foot" configuration, which at the time was unarmed. While I'm trying to run away and go through the slow-ass weapon switching system, I get shot in the back and die, and WHAT DO YOU KNOW I have to go back to the beginning of the mission again.
5. Forced walking with cell phone, get interrupted in any way, lose the conversation forever. Also - the guy who decided that the button you use to answer the phone is the same one you have to tap furiously to run should be shot.
6. Went into a strip club, decided to see what would happen if I went on stage. Got halfway up the stairs when a guy yells at me to get out, so I start going. Then I realize bouncers have come out of the woodwork and everybody is beating the shit out of me. The crowd follows me all the way out to the parking lot where I end up having to fucking shoot them all, at which point a cop sees me and NOW I'm running from them AND the bouncers. Why no option to actually just leave the club? They tell me to leave, so I start to leave. Follow me out, sure, but don't put me in the freaking hospital for walking halfway up some stairs and then complying with your request to leave.

The more I play, the more I find myself being frustrated at the game instead of having fun, and that's not something I can ever remember with GTA games before. When I lose a mission, it never feels like I just failed at something, it feels like the controls have let me down or I otherwise just got cheap shotted. Granted, I skipped Vice City and San Andreas, but I played 1, 2, London, and 3 extensively. GTA4 just doesn't seem as accessible; I remember with 1 and 2, I could play around a bunch of cousins and such when they came into town and everybody could take turns playing and having a great time. When I got GTA3, we basically opened up my dorm room to the rest of the floor 24/7 as people kept coming in to play or just watch what was going on.

With 4, if I can't even control it all that well, my non gamer friends and cousins have no hope. It just doesn't seem as accessible as my previous experiences with the series. For all the nice little touches like all the billboards and websites and radio commercials and random goings-on amongst the populace, there are some straight up asinine design decisions floating around in this game.

It doesn't help that I now have less time for gaming, so I fear this game will end up next to Bioshock and Assassins Creed: games that don't engage me enough to finish it all the way through.

Like someone else said, having to repeat missions because of shitty controls, does not help the situation. I appreciate what R* tried to do, but in many ways, it is a step back from SA.

It will be fun to watch Yahtzee's review. Maybe it will be the only one that is not blinded by the hype.

Yeah some of the bikes are incredible and the best way to get around town easily. Complete joygasm was doing the heli-chase mission with a good, manouverable bike. Zigzag around cars + keeping high speed = win

Why not just hail a cab and skip to the destination? It's only like 10 dollars... I think they expect you to do so, instead of driving there everytime.

Other than that, I love the game, but you guys make some great points. In many ways this game has very annoying faults. Especially during missions where it seems like every friggin light pole, ped, car and trash can is trying to jump out in front of you. Just move the fuck out the way and let me enjoy my fucking game.

Because there isn't always a cab around, and the only thing more frustrating than driving there is running around praying for a cab to show up.

Call Roman's service. Sometimes he won't have a cab available, but it's free and doesn't require any effort on your part other than bringing up the phone.

Call Roman on your cell and ask for car service. It shows up within 30 seconds.

edit: beaten. :)

I just start driving or walking on my way, until I see a cab. Definitely took the frustration out of re-finding checkpoints....

What's the number? On the back of cabs it says dial 255 but when I do nothing happens. Maybe I have to beat a story element before it works.

You have to be friendly enough with Roman that he will let you use his service. Go out on a date with him.

He only has cabs like half the time I call.

All this stuff is just really a series sloppy of fixes for a problem that could have been easily solved with checkpoints.

Well, the one thing I seem to be having some trouble with is kind of different from most:

The HEAVY theme of "America sucks" running through it. Don't get me wrong, I love this game, and I know they always poke fun at the US which is fine to a point, because a lot of stuff deserves to be poked fun at in the states. But I've only played over ten hours in the game, and I don't remember so much disrespect towards the US in the other GTA games like this one. The radio is constantly making political jokes, some of the advertising, and Niko is always trashing America to Roman in a big way.

The other GTA games were more subtle and funny when it came to pointing out Americas flaws. Now they want to throw it in our face like a snowball with dirt and rocks mixed in.

No mission checkpoints IS DRIVING ME CRAZY

My #1 complaint, above all others. I'm not sure if the game changes later on, but these errand missions with no checkpoints are driving me crazy. It's fine to start me at Faustin's house, make me drive 5 mins to get something, then drive 5 mins to kill someone, then drive 10 mins back to the house. BUT, when I die, DON'T PUT ME BACK ALL THE WAY AT THE HOUSE. Yes, your game is pretty, but I don't want to spend 15 minutes driving all over the place 3 times in a row.

It's under Roman in the phonebook (same place as eating, darts, pool etc) when he likes you above 90%, which results in you unlocking this very useful perk

I don't know about deserving it. Its an American game set in a city based on New York that is trying to be humorous. So the satire is of course going to be there and it works.

Roman is always very pro America. He has multiple speeches about how great America is. Niko has a more complex view of America because he is doing all kind of evil shit but even he says America is much better than where he came from and how much opportunity there is. Hell, he's a immigrant and that's part of the reason why he came. He even chastises a few characters about how good they have it in America. Law Chick is caricature of a liberal do-gooder with no sense of reality. There is plenty of satire aimed at both sides. I think you are reading more into it than what is there. Just my opinion. The game has a somewhat dark view of society period. It just happens to take place in America.

Sure we do. To a extent. But America is hardly the worst country on the planet as the game makes it seem like sometimes. It may be full of complete morans(intentional), but so is everywhere else. America just gets more publicity about it.

Not only that, but you can tell every swipe is coming from love. The Houser's moved here and have obsessed on this country because it's both a great and terrible place.

This is a backhanded compliment at the very least. Roman is a degenerate womanizing gambler, who feels sorry about his condition, but is unwilling to change.

Rockstar has really nailed the satire and tone in this, and the anger towards American policy and government(the head writer is American, by the way) is spot on.

I would have liked more mature satire like this over more poo poo pee pee jokes, but hey, they need to sell games.

But, Romans big thing about America is 'fake titties.' And how much you can milk America for.

Well, like I said, I only have a few hours in the game. But it does seem strange that it is a more mean spirited game than it was before towards the US. I guess I preferred the more subtle jabs at american society and innuendo of the previous games

It is satire because he has a misguided view of America in a sense and some of his praise is based on superficial things but imo there is real affection for America also that comes across through him. He is his own man. He has his own business. This is the opportunity that has been afforded him. He likes America and is fully aware in a sense of its flaws which in a way is the most realistic way to view it.

Niko has a more cynical view about human nature in general. He believe there is evil everywhere and he deals with it on a daily basis and doesn't think you can change it. Which is also a fair viewpoint.

See my post above. Also this is the story of immigrants which is naturally going to lend itself to dealing with the American Dream through an immigrants eyes. An immigrant who is murdering, stealing, and dealing with the worst aspects of America. The other lead characters in GTA titles were Americans so their take is going to naturally be a little different.

I think San Andreas in its way has a ton of cultural criticism also in the gap between America, the American Dream, and the American Ideal.

Credits in the manual say Dan Houser and Rupert Humphries both for the primary story and the dialogue.

My mistake then. I know he had much bigger input this time. There's a great NPR interview with him discussing a lot of this stuff.

I don't want to start another thread with my question, but it seems to fit well here.

What do you guys want to see patched? Realistically, what can R* do in small patches over the next few months to improve the game?

This is my short list for now:
- add ambulance and fire truck missions (so far I am only aware of police and taxi missions).
- add hospital and food stand icons to the map (or maybe I have not figured out how to do this).
- allow custom map notes (I want to add weapon and armor locations).
- some sort of mission checkpoint system - say restart from last NPC encounter/cutscene.
- allow optional run/walk with the tilt of the controller rather than use a run button.
- allow change of the lockon/shoot button on PS3 to L1, R1.
- change the cell phone coloring for better readability.
- change the coloring of some map items (Friends that show up in very dark green are nearly impossible to see).
- get out of a taxi button halfway through your trip.
- adjust the sensitivity of the cops giving you stars if you bump into them with a car accidentally.
- toggle camera snap to back mode that is on now when you are on foot.
- toggle the "car aligned slightly tot he right" in driving mode.

This is the kind of game that breaks the idea of rating out of a maximum.

It's worth a ten. It's worth MORE than a ten. But it's got flaws in ADDITION to that, which can't really take away from the ten fairly.

I give it a 12 out of 20 (not a 12/20, that suggests just over 50%. ) More like.. 120%/200%

It's still a ten, there's so much to it, but there's also lots of flaws that you wonder how they haven't fixed yet.

I see it as a 12/10 with a -2 for the flaws, so it gets a 10 still. If they fix most of the stuff, then it really will be beyond reproach.

Well, like I said, I don't remember San Andreas being so blatant about it. But its been a while since I've played it.

What really doesn't make any sense to me is that R*(well..one of the teams) developed The Warriors, one of the best 3D beatemups of all time. Why they couldn't put together a competent melee system really makes me wonder.

We have Niko here who is a boxer who served during the Yugoslav wars. With a single punch he can send some roided up bodybuilder/pro-fighter to his knees. How am I supposed to buy Niko getting beaten up by fat old men? Yeah it's one thing if you get caught sleeping but when single punches are taking 10-25% of your health it's ridiculous.

While we're at it with Niko's extensive training I imagine he'd have some ways of disarming people. Like say when some cop pulls him over while he's in his car and he's got the gun trained on him he could flip out with some judo-ski to swipe the cop's gun out of his hand and into Niko's. Or maybe Niko could sneak up on somebody and grab the shotgun out of their hands...y'know?

Ok, but since I don't 'get it' please answer this for me. What is so different about "GTA-Bore" than the previous GTAs?

I've played them all now and I just don't see what version 4 bought to the table.

It doesn't look like the Table Tennis game for graphics. The graphics and frame rate are a distraction to me. The glows, the blurs, the choppiness. I'd rather have worse graphics and a rock steady frame rate than neither.

I can't have great shoot outs like GUN.

The walking animations are horrible (he walks like a motorcycle) plus they are not even analog. Run by pushing A? Sprint by tapping A? They could not be serious with this junk. My PSP GTA does that!

The cars feel like they are on the moon. I've never driven a car where the brakes and wheel turns don't properly interact.

This feels like an old game out of the box.

I very much agree.

The fighting in the Warriors. The shootouts in GUN. The graphics of Table Tennis.

Where did this stuff go?

The development was useless for GTA4?
