Three in April - Mo' Games Mo' Problems

I started up both Call of Juarez: Gunslinger and Half-Minute Hero.

I'm loving the gameplay in Call of Juarez. Very fast paced with a great visual and narration style. Not liking Half-Minute Hero as much, might just drop it.

Tappingo
Bravely Default
Infamous 2
Under a Killing Moon That was... much shorter than I remember. Surprising. I wonder if that's a thing with adventures: They feel a lot longer when you're younger because you get stuck for longer and you're more inclined to view a twisty-turny storyline as being 'long', even if it's actually quite short to tell.

Not sure what to start next. Easter will bring a long weekend with it, so I can pick something reasonably substantial and devote a good chunk of time to it... but what? Maybe Pandora Directive, but it's nice to have a palate cleanser of some sort between two games of the same type. Half-Minute Hero's a possibility, as is The Stanley Parable, but neither of those is particularly chunky. I've been bouncing around the outskirts of Borderlands, might be worth throwing some focus onto that.

Would love to participate again this month. Next month will be tricky, since I'm one the road for over half of it, so lets make April extra special. Here's my list:

1) Donkey Kong: Tropical Freeze -- (dedicated co-op game). So far, on World 3, and progressing nicely. We are doing all the KONG letters and puzzle pieces though, so we might get frustrated.

2) Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon -- This is my commute and in bed game. I'm digging it so far, but the 3 stars are pretty hard to get. Only gotten one so far.

3) Bioshock Infinite: BAS Episode 2 -- This seems short enough and PC centric, so it meets the 3rd game's criteria easy. Only problem is that I'm still also playing Hearthstone, FTL Advanced Edition, and Diablo 3: ROS, so it might be tough to shake time away to complete those 2.

Bonus Game(s):

Guacamelee: Gold Edition -- There's this one puzzle that's driving us bonkers, and keeping us from completing the game. Maybe after Tropical Freeze we will redo it.

State of Decay -- I know there's a lot of praise for the game, but the time mechanic really puts me off. I always feel like I'm missing something after I come back, even though I know I shouldn't. I want to give some time to it and give it a fair shake though.

  • ZombiU (Wii U)
    [*]Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney (DS)
    [*]Metal Gear Rising (PC)
    [*]Infinite Space (DS)
    [*]Sound Shapes (Vita)
    [*]The Swapper (PC)

Going all-in, as I've just submitted my ph-d thesis and have some time on my hand until the public defense. All games I'm right in the middle of, except Sound Shapes that I just bought

What I'll end up doing: playing Spelunky on Vita and EU IV on PC like a mad man

Welp. Only finished Sound Shapes so far. Really liked it!

Swapper is nearly finished. But I hate that the achievements are bugged for me. Stuck on the boss(es) in the end of chapter four in MGR.

The achievements are secret rooms in that game, they don't unlock through normal play.

I know, and I've found four or five of them (the "message from home" also appears in my log), but achievements wont unlock.. :(

My list:
  • Battlefield 4 (PS4) - Second Assault and Naval Strike Trophies
  • CoD:Ghosts (PS4) - Nightfall Trophies
  • South Park TSoT (360)
  • Ratchet & Clank 1 (PS3)
  • Fallout New Vegas (360) - Will not complete this month, just progressing
  • Titanfall (360) - Doubtful I'll complete this month, just enjoying and progressing

Thief
South park the Stick of Truth
Castlevania 2 Lords of Shadow

After that, as much progress as I can in:
Yakuza: Isshin
Dragon Dragoon 3
Ace Attorney Investigations 2

Done:
Thief
Southpark Stick of Truth
Ace Attornez investigations 2 - case 4

Continuing with case 5 of AAI2

Currently Playing ...
Final Fantasy X/X2 HD
Crysis 3
Tales of Symphonia HD
Xenoblade Chronicles

Completed ...
Kingdom Hearts Final Mix HD
Really enjoyed playing this game again. Beat it tonight on proud and got everything/killed all optional bosses. Just need to finish up the gummi missions and that platinum is mine.

Metal Gear: Revengeance
Enjoyed the hell out of this game. The last battle gave me a hard fucking time but I managed to win eventually. The boss fights were amazing = )

Next up ...
Beyond
Metro: Last Night
Remember Me
Skyrim
Dragons Crown
Time and Eternity
Sniper Elite V2

So many games so little time. Enjoying the hell out of my rpgs though.

Working on both Fez and Call of Juarez right now, they are actually great compliments to each other.

Need to focus on finishing up Oracle of Ages though. Golden Sun releases on WiiU VC on the 17th. I don't have a WiiU, but I want to follow along with my GBA Micro.

Since I'm playing more reasonable-lengthed games instead of 80 hour long RPGs like usual, I'll partake:

Gone Home - beat this last weekend
Guacamelee - beat this last weekend, just want to finish up a few more Inferno challenges
Ys 5 - in the middle of it, should beat it soon
South Park: The Stick of Truth - nearing the end
Ys: Memories of Celceta - haven't started yet
Super Mario 3D World - just have to beat the final challenge... that one's a doozy though!

- Deus Ex: The Fall (IOS)
- Secret of Mana (IOS)
- Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light (IOS -> PC)

Had to switch to the PC version of Guardian of Light, as the IOS kind of became a pain to play around the halfway mark. Quite the good game though once I switched to PC :-)

PSone:
Tecmo's Deception: Invitation to Darkness
In the Hunt

PS4:
Strider

3DS:
Yoshi's New Island

PS3:
Dark Souls II
South Park: Stick of Truth

Saturn:
Astal

Finished Dark Souls II last night after work. Logged a little over 40 hours while rocking the Covenant of the Fittest/Champions, whatever it's called. Went solo the entire time too. I'm a tough customer when it comes to From Software and their Souls games. I've been a fan of their stuff since King's Field and I particularly love their output during the PS2/GC/Xbox days. As much as I enjoy/like these Souls titles, it's always a love/hate relationship with them. It's not because of the game's difficulty either (actually, I thought Dark Souls II was the easiest of the bunch, even with the harder covenant activated on my first run). The games do so much right yet they do so much wrong, I feel. It's frustrating too because they're three games in now and they continue to make the same mistakes regarding particular gameplay/design aspects. I don't want to get into it here as it's something that will fall on deaf ears and this isn't really the place/thread to go into detail.

All I gotta say is I hope they give this series a loooooooong break. I really, REALLY hope their PS4/next gen project is a return to King's Field...who am I kidding though, they'll milk this shit for all it's worth!

I'm doing good this month. Broke back into South Park tonight so I'll probably be playing that more often. I'm at World 5 in Yoshi too, so that will be over soon, I think. I save my Astal runs for Saturday/Sunday mornings, so maybe this weekend will be the time I finally clear it! I removed Half Minute Hero 2 because I'm not really feeling like playing it, so I'll backlog that shit for now.

Added in Fez due to the Playfire rewards program, I've had this one in my backlog for a while and finally gave it a chance.
I did enjoy my time with it, though it does wear out its welcome. I went in blind and didn't use a guide, though it is obvious to me that the difficulty really comes out in NG+.

My List

Resident Evil 4: Separate Ways (PC)
Year Walk (PC)
Fez (PC)
Dark Souls II (PC)
The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages (3DS)
South Park: The Stick of Truth (PC)
Golden Sun (GBA)

Final Fantasy X HD
Final Fantasy XIV
Trials Fusion

I got all of the main campaign levels in Trials done (not counting the Extreme tracks, because as you know, fuck Trials). I ended up re-rolling my FFXIV character to play with gaffers, so that is probably not going to be maxed out in time to finish the month. So I might throw mark of the ninja or something to get a quick finish if i get done with FFX in time.

Already wrapped Infamous Second Son Good play through, I may attempt an Evil one in the coming weeks. I'm pretty confident that this is the month that Killzone SF finally goes down, but after downloading several games that have just been hanging out on my PS+ Account (Enslaved, Far Cry Blood Dragon, Rain, Just Cause 2 plus the recently free Arkham City) I'm not sure what the third game will ultimately be.

1.Infamous Second Son
2. Killzone Shadow Fall
3. Tomb Raider DE/Thief/Arkham City/Enslaved/Rain/Etc

Wrapped up Killzone the other day, could not be more pleased to be done with and delete that game. I wanted to like it. I tried to like it. It was so... blah for so much of it. Generic scifi FPS could have been its alternate title.

Two down, one to go. Leaning toward Tomb Raider.

Super Mario 3D World
Catherine
Ratchet & Clank: Quest for Booty
Punch-Out!! (Wii)
Pokemon Yellow
Kingdom Hearts Re:Chain of Memories (1.5 version)
Devil May Cry (HD Collection version)

3D World I finished Champion Road with one character, I'm counting that as done.

Catherine I just finished now. Not sure if it got easier at the end or I just got better at it, but either way I'm not going to bother with other endings and stuff. I got the
true Catherine ending where Vincent goes and lives with her in the underworld or whatever. Lol.

The other five I'm slowly working on. I can never stay focused on a single game at a time >_>

I ended up taking a break from Half-Life because I felt like the "On a Rail" chapter was dragging on for soooo long. As a result, I've got my three completed:

- PixelJunk Shooter
- Type:Rider
- The Swapper
- Half-Life

None of the three games are ones that I feel will have any replay value for me, but they were nice enough as one-time shots.

Time to go back to Half-Life, I think I'm basically at the end of On a Rail, so I'm ready to get going again. Being April 18th, though, I doubt I'll finish it this month. I like playing it in short sessions, but it doesn't hold me for long, nor does it really drag me back in when I'm away from it.

Not sure if either of these count..

Finished Infamous SS that first weekend, but didnt finish the evil playthrough/get the platinum until a few days ago.

Ran through My Life as a King's story mode again. I played this years ago when it first came out and loved it, but had sold my wii since. Got the game again and finished it once, playing through on the hardest difficulty now (everyone fuckin dies all the time)

My 3rd will most definitely be danganronpa. just finished the 3rd chapter and feel like I can burn through it this weekend before Demon Gaze comes out tuesday

My list of possibilities for the month:

  • Assassin's Creed III DLC
  • Assassin's Creed IV DLC
  • Deus Ex: Human Revolution - Director's Cut
  • Final Fantasy X HD
  • Final Fantasy XIII: Lightning Returns
  • Kingdom Hearts (hard)
  • Ratchet & Clank: Nexus
  • Tomb Raider 2013
  • The Witcher 2

Three done already and I'm hoping to get R&C done this weekend.

I beat Shadow of Memories. I am very surprised, because game was very short, but very good, too. Finished it in 5:30 h, but I stucked in one chapter for almost 2 hours. Game stats showed me 3:25 h and C ending. Admittedly SoM has 5 endings, but...
I think I'll start it again. Want to see A ending.
For NA gamers. Shadow of Memories it's Shadow of Destiny. Memories in PAL region.

1. inFamous: Second Son (PS4)
2. Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons (PS3)
3. Prince of Persia: The Warrior Within (PS3) / Devil May Cry 2 (PS3) ??
4. Shadow of Memories (PS2)

Dynasty Warriors 8
FFXHD
Dishonored

It was a long time since I played the original FFX and I thoroughly enjoyed this play through. Kept myself a save just in case I ever want to go back and attempt a 100%, but I don't see that happening for a long time.

Did get all the Aoens though, and forgot how overpowered
Magus Sisters
are.

Anyway I'm pretty sure Dishonored is going to be the next game I cross off my list, but who knows.

An unhealthy obsession with Titanfall is preventing me from making progress in any other game.

Other than that I've been focusing on
FFX HD PS3
Yoshi's island 3DS
Tomb Raider PC

Done:
Thief
Southpark Stick of Truth
Ace Attornez investigations 2 - case 4
Ace Attornez investigations 2 - case 5

Continuing:
Castlevania: LOS 2
Dragon Dragoon 3
Yakuza Ishin

Dear GAF,

Im so glad I found this thread. My backlog is insane on just about every platform. Its really out of control. And I keep buying games when they are on sale. WTF is wrong with me? Thankfully, this just the kind of help I need in the form of a support group.

So, heres my first confession: Im hopelessly addicted to 2 games right now which technically have no end in sight...1) Titanfall (Xbone) and 2) Skyrim (360). These 2 games are making it almost impossible to chip away at anything else in my backlog.

So, I guess my first challenge is to pick 3 games that can be finished in the next 10 days and try to dedicate some time to them.

Im thinking I'll hammer away at Uncharted, Infamous, Assassins Creed, and...Halo Anniversary since all are probably doable in the next 10 days...and hope I can finish 3 of em...

I'll jump in since it looks like I can actually complete it.

  • Metal Gear Solid Rising: Revengence (PS3)
  • Guacamelee: Gold Edition (PC)
  • Kid Icarus: Uprising (3DS)

Glad to see you are still enjoying the gift I gave Grief.

Finished

Spelunky
iAPgHU27ymNlQ.PNG

I know that you don't really finish Spelunky, you can always take on a ridiculous challenge or compete in the dailies, but after spending more than 100 hours on it, I was ready to wrap it up. I unlocked all achievements besides Addicted and The Entire Gang after playing Adventure Mode around 600 times, so I was basically grinding for the last two achievements. I still can't believe that I actually managed to unlock the Low Scorer achievement.

The Typing of the Dead: Overkill
i3YTeE6J47HDM.PNG

This is a great surprise release from Sega. I certainly enjoyed my time with it. I played through both the Typing and House modes. Some of the achievement are outright insane, after several tries I have accepted that I will never be able to play through a level without taking damage.

Shank 1
iKuNxBeLdyuSU.PNG

I love the Shank series and I am still hoping for a third entry. I played through the game on Hard, which was generally a very enjoyable experience, the game does have a janky feel to it in some segments, which resulted in some very cheap deaths and without any checkpoint system in place in Hard Mode, it can get quite frustrating at times. The sequel has addressed most of these issues and is overall a very polished game, which I am looking forward to complete next.

An unhealthy obsession with Titanfall is preventing me from making progress in any other game.

This and rebelling at our 'upgrade' to a LG 720p 42 in. plasma (from a Samsung 22' 1080p) are my issues. Once I get through a lot of these games I'm not going to come back to them, and I want them at their best. Still have the little TV though, so I'll just figure out how to get that set up without having to move everything out from the entertainment center.

First world problems.

Anyway as an update I've completed the good run on Infamous SS and beat both campaigns in Titanfall. If I can tear myself away I can probably tackle The Last of Us DLC or Ground Zeroes to finish out the 3 of this month.

Been a good month for me. Got a 3DS XL on the first and completed 3D Land 100% and Cave Story, as well as finishing off Fez 100% which I started last month.

Next...another 3DS game or perhaps a DS game.

I'm very close to finishing up Portal 2 and Call of Juarez: Gunslinger.

Need to tie up all of my loose ends before Dark Souls II drops.

Super Mario 3D World
Catherine
Ratchet & Clank: Quest for Booty
Guacamelee!

Punch-Out!! (Wii)
Pokemon Yellow
Kingdom Hearts Re:Chain of Memories (1.5 version)
Devil May Cry (HD Collection version)

Finished Quest for Booty a few days ago. Pretty fun bite-sized game tbh, was expecting mediocrity.

Bought Guacamelee on the EU PSN Easter sale and got hooked, really damn good metroidvania. Just have to do hard mode for the platinum, but I'll save that playthrough for later (maybe when I buy a Vita thanks to cross save).

Anyway, 4 done for the month! Might try to finish Yellow and make it 5; on Cinnabar Island now so should be easy.

- Deus Ex: The Fall (IOS)
- Secret of Mana (IOS)
- Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light (IOS -> PC)

Just put the finishing touches on Secret of Mana - great IOS port, total playtime around 23 hours, never a dull moment. What a gem!

3. Octodad

Wrapped up Killzone the other day, could not be more pleased to be done with and delete that game. I wanted to like it. I tried to like it. It was so... blah for so much of it. Generic scifi FPS could have been its alternate title.

I dabbled in Thief, got a little further in Tomb Raider, but ultimately Octodad was the third game down. Next month is gonna be a little strange, Transistor and Watch Dogs are both later in the month, going to try to hit Thief, Tomb Raider and probably Arkham City in the first few weeks. Or rest on my laurels since I finished ~10 games in the last 3 months, which is great for me.

I've been playing shitloads of games this month but not beaten anything yet. I'm getting close though, hopefully I'll get it together now in the 11th hour and knock out my three.

On the chopping block:
- The Witcher 2
- Saints Row: The Third
- Crysis
- Portal

I think I can I think I can...

Finally finished all my exams for the semester! I'm FREE! I haven't been able to put too much time into gaming, but I finally got bit trip runner done. Been failing too many of these lately, so hopefully I can finish another game before the end of the month, even though that's still a fail...

1) Bit Trip Runner - PC - Welp. Finally finished the last two levels that I've been stuck on for months. Most frustrating game ever…but still a lot of fun. I still think the second one is much better.

2) Not sure yet. Maybe A Link To The Past, or Mighty Switch Force.

Dynasty Warriors 8
FFXHD
Dishonored + DLC

I was surprised how much I enjoyed Dishonored by the end. The story was nothing to write home about but it was enough to keep me moving through it.

I did prefer the two story DLC to the main campaign though. They were short and to the point, with a better story (imo). Maybe
Daud,
just seemed like he had more character than
Corvo.

No idea what I am going to work on next. I'm going to get a PS4 once TLoU releases so maybe I should finally play through the infamous' to prepare for SS.

Got through Dead Nation today, majorly due to the fact that I was sitting in an auto shop waiting room for 2 1/2 hours. There's no way I'll get through Donkey Kong at this point. I think I'm just burnt out on platformers right now; I've tried playing it a few times, and have gotten all the collectibles in World 1, but I just can't get into the game. I'll give platformers a rest next month and possibly try to tackle it in June.

  1. Dishonored
  2. Yoshi's New Island
  3. Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze
Bonus:
  1. Bioshock Infinite: Burial at Sea Episode Two
  2. Dead Nation

Finally finished L.A. Noire, as much as I loved it's theme and the way it's story twisted into a really good package, it had some severe issues with it's length and variety. Still, overall a really positive experience and I'm sad that Bondi will never get the chance to improve on it.

That brings my April total to 5, which is great as I probably wont get more than 1 or 2 games finished next month due to a dev conference, wrapping my own mobile game ready for release and moving to Singapore for the summer.

April 2014:
-Batman Arkham City
-Batman Arkham City: Harley Quinn's Revenge
-Call of Duty: Ghosts
-Alan Wake: American Nightmare
-L.A. Noire

My list of possibilities for the month:

  • Assassin's Creed III DLC
  • Assassin's Creed IV DLC
  • Deus Ex: Human Revolution - Director's Cut
  • Final Fantasy X HD
  • Final Fantasy XIII: Lightning Returns
  • Kingdom Hearts (hard)
  • Ratchet & Clank: Nexus
  • Tomb Raider 2013
  • The Witcher 2

Zero chance I'll finish anything extra in the next couple of days, so here's my final tally. Really happy with how many games I finished, though it was mostly thanks to Easter weekend and ANZAC day that I got so much spare time to play them.

Looking forward to next month, as I have a couple of games that weren't on this months in mind already.

Dont know what to say about this game. It wasnt anything special but it wasnt bad. Pretty much just played it because I played the first 2.

Not sure what to play next. Beyond, Remember Me, Metro: Last Light, Sniper Elite or finish Skyrim.

Well, I finished off Mighty Switch Force pretty quickly. Pretty burnt out on platformers, but I just ordered Super Mario 3d World :/. I might be able to fit in another game before the month ends! Maybe A Link To The Past.

  • Dysfunctional Systems
    [*]Zelda: Four Swords Anniversary Edition
    [*]VVVVVV
[*]I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream
    [*]Anodyne
  • Breath of Fire

Well, I finished five games. Not as much as I wanted to, but there's still a few days left in April, and early May will definitely have multiple games being finished for me. Hopefully that will include Breath of Fire.

I'm going to try and play through a lot this month.

Fez (PS4)
Steamworld Dig (PS4)
Lego Marvel Super Heroes (PS4)
South Park: The Stick of Truth (PC)
Grand Theft Auto: The Ballad of Gay Tony (PC)
Ratchet and Clank HD (PS3)
And, time permitting, I'll jump through The Wolf Among Us (PC) and The Walking Dead: Season Two (PC), power through the episodes out so far.

I'm out to take down my backlog with a revengeance the next little while, and last month worked out well.

I ended up finishing:

Infamous: Second Son (Evil on Expert)
Ratchet and Clank HD
Trials Fusion
Castle of Illusion HD
Lego Marvel Super Heroes

And I'm an hour or so from finishing South Park: The Stick of Truth. I'll close out the month on that and Child of Light.

Game 1. BioShock Infinite| Burial at Sea: Episode One [PC] 5 hours – finished April 1
Irrational Games created some incredible worlds with this series, and a delightful character in Elizabeth. But Infinite and its DLC are ultimately shallow experiences, and I found the finale a tad upsetting. Far and away the best part of Infinite, for me, was the lead voice actress. She was crisp, gorgeous, and emotive throughout. I’ve likely never heard better.

Game 2. South Park: The Stick of Truth [PC] 22 hours – finished April 6
Kudos to Matt and Trey. This game truly does justice to the humor and visuals of the series. It was a joy to play . . . outside of the horrific farting segments that completely broke the flow of the game. What a shame that such an enjoyable experience could become such a tedious chore at several points. Still it was a treat (what an epic conclusion, lol), and a shining example of how entertaining this medium can be in the right hands.

Game 3. F.E.A.R. Extraction Point [PC] 5.5 hours – finished April 13
I was itching for more of F.E.A.R.’s trademark horror and slow-motion gunplay—the visceral, acrobatic joy of which has not been matched, let alone beat—and this expansion fit the bill. I’d have liked to have seen even more of Alma and dug a bit deeper into the story, but as an expansion, that’s not what this is about. Come for the action, get spooked a little, and get out. I have yet to play the second expansion, The Perseus Mandate, but it’s on the list.

Game 4. F.E.A.R. Perseus Mandate [PC] 6.5 hours – finished April 28
To my delight, this expansion boasts improved graphics, from native widescreen support and higher-resolution texture maps, to much greater level variety and, unless my eyes deceive me, ratcheted-up physics. It’s creepier and more unsettling than the first expansion—the game made my skin crawl several times—and the gunplay is as good as ever. Hands-down superior to Extraction Point, and a great ride overall. Bonus points for the late-game music that for me recalled the haunting cacophonies from PSX Doom.

Finished PoP: WW, finally. Unfortunately I didn't enjoy it too much. Backtracking all the time, sound problems (PoP HD collection) and...backtracking once again. Plot was interesting, main opponent and empress, too, but IMO Sands of Time are better game.
However second month in a row I've beaten four games.

1. inFamous: Second Son (PS4)
2. Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons (PS3)
3. Prince of Persia: The Warrior Within (PS3)
4. Shadow of Memories (PS2)
