Three in September - Backlog Warrior

Red Dead Redemption
New Super Luigi U

Prince of Persia (2008)

New Additions:
XCOM: Enemy Unknown
Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask

Beat Red Dead and completed NSLU. Red Dead was... okay. The story was fine but the gameplay, despite the wild west twist, was so familiar, and at no point did I particularly care about John Marston or what happened to him. I'm so tired of stoic, world-weary protagonists who seem eager to do everything everyone asks of them. Blunted any excitement I may have had for GTAV. I'm definitely comfortable waiting for a potential PC release... and then some.

NSLU on the other hand was the second breath of NSMBU that I needed. Knowing which levels housed secret exits from NSMBU made it a much greater pleasure to hunt them down. There were only one or two things in the entire game that I ended up looking up rather than continue to blindly search for on my own. It was platforming nirvana and has me pumped for Super Mario 3D World later this year, despite my misgivings.

genbacklog.jpg

my current gen backlog is not getting any shorter :E

Will try to clear this month:
Kens Rage 2
Spec Ops The Line
Last of Us

GTA5 is going to kill my time though :P

-Dishonored's two story DLCs: Knife of Dunwall and Brigmore Witches
-Rayman Legends
-Saint's Row IV (carried over from August's list)

Bonus: The Witcher's side story adventures

Beat Rayman Legends and Donkey Kong (for 3DS Virtual Console, originally on Game Boy). Legends had a bit too much Rayman Jungle Run type design to it, but was still excellent. Murfy worked pretty well as a one button press extension of your character, forced you to think different, split your attention. Especially liked the cake mechanic. I adored the entire underwater world; the highlight of the game for me. Inflatable Island was an amazing introduction to that world. Usually underwater stuff is the worst part of platformers (except Donkey Kong Country), but Legends, like Origins, pulls it off. For my last random comment: I think Origins' soundtrack was a lot better than Legends'.

Donkey Kong was recommended in the Club Nintendo thread, and I'm glad it was highly recommended. I redeemed my coins and got to play a great platformer. I didn't know Mario could back flip this early on, thought Mario 64 introduced that. The handstand jump was awesome too. It could be a frustrating butt, but overall I really enjoyed it.

Yesterday I completed Syndicate (the original PC game) and Amnesia: A Machine For Pigs. I am up to my quota on games for this month!

Also I can proudly proclaim that, over the span of a year, I have reduced my backlog to just three games. Admittedly many of the games I started to play have been dropped for various reasons, but the point being that they were played with and I got value for money (I made a real effort to give each of those games a real try first before ditching them) and as such I don't have anywhere near as much to fret about backlog wise as before. This is quite an amazing feat and a wonderful, cleansing feeling, because now I feel as though I can go back and replay old games again without feeling guilty about it... or just buy some new games, I dunno.

I probably won't have a chance to beat anymore games this month as I'll be on holiday next week onwards, but I can certainly get to playing something between now and then. Plus, there is always October. Hurrah!

Progress:

New Super Luigi U
Stacking
Timesplitters 2

Finally wrapped up an old game! Got stuck in the Aztec level years ago and never finished it. Started over from the beginning today and finished it one sitting. Great stuff.

Tales of Xillia

AC3

Mario Kart 7

Finished Tales of Xillia Jude playthrough. I'll get onto finishing NG+ with Milla eventually, but for now I need to deal with AC3, MK7 and GTAV on Tuesday.

Thoroughly enjoyed Tales of Xillia, and TOX2 is one of my most anticipated titles of next year (even though it came out not that long ago in Japan :p).

-The Wonderful 101
-Rayman Legends
-Puppeteer
-Tales of Xillia
-New Super Luigi U
-Ni-no-Kuni
-Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons
-Castle of Illusion HD: Starring Mickey Mouse

Finished Ni-no-Kuni last week...eh. Wasn't impressed considering the praise it gets. One of the most disappointing RPGs I've ever played.

Met the thread's goal, but I'm sure I'll knock a few others out before month's end. Still in the middle of Rayman Legends, New Super Luigi U and Puppeteer. Enjoying them thoroughly. Haven't touched Xillia in a week. Getting W101 tomorrow morning and it'll probably take over my gaming routine for quite some time.

I'll try for these:

Hitman: Absolution
Crysis 2
Splinter Cell Blacklist

Even though I'm well into the first two, not sure it's possible to get all three done with GTA V so close.

Aiming for Rayman Origins, Ocarina of Time 3D, and Pokemon SoulSilver(beat the Elite Four). Should all be doable, but I'm also playing Persona 3 Portable and SMTIV and have no chance of beating even one of those this month.

Diablo 3 (x360)
Kingdom Rush (Android)
Chrono Trigger (DS)

Yeah - Finished Diablo 3 yesterday. What a game!
Halfway through Kindom Rush, it plays very, very good on my Nexus 7 :-)
I'm shuffling Chrono Trigger out for something else, not in the mood for JRPG's

Spec Ops - The Line [AMAZING game, finished it yesterday in one go. Blew my mind]
Tomb Raider
Splinter Cell Blacklist

Going to try and finish Tomb Raider tonight.

I'm a bit late, but I'll do my best.
Due to living away from my consoles and PC the next months, I'm going to kill the portable backlog:
- Gravity Rush (Vita)
- Luigi's Mansion 2 (3DS)
- Rhythm Thief (3DS)

Main List:
GTA V,
Kingdom Hearts: Final Mix,
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney

Bonus:
Pikmin 3,
Shin Megami Tensei IV,
Yakuza 4,
The Last of Us

Killzone is done. It was even shorter than I thought it would be, although I still have the extra contracts to complete.

  • Killzone: Mercenary
  • Tomba!
  • The Wonderful 101
Bonus:

  • Dungeon Hunter Alliance

My backlog is about to explode, and I'm playing about 15 games at the same time...

This month I'll try to focus my efforts and finish:

- Persona 4: Golden
- Castlevania: Lords of Shadow
- Shadow of the Colussus

And likely blast my way through:
- Serious Sam HD
- Duke Nukem 3D

uncharted 3 leftover from august finished :P
on with the next games!
*think* ill rip out zone of enders hd (to get some air from ND games), and then the last of us (moar ND games!)!
I'll try to finish both before month's end while dabbling with old gba/nes/snes games :P

Three down: Splice, Sokobond, and Hexcells.

Puzzle game extravaganza.

I honestly thought 3D Classics: Kirby's Adventure would be next but Hexcells was super short. Not sure if I'll get through anything else this month, but we'll see!

I failed in August but came close with 3 out of 4.

3 games in September - that should be doable. I'll finish 3 of the following

Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney
Phoenix Wright Justice For All
Killzone 3
Mark of the Ninja
Shadow Run Returns
Resident Evil 6

So far I've finished Mark of the Ninja and went off my list and also finished Gone Home and Brothers A Tale of Two Sons -

Should be starting GTAV in the next day or so, doubtful I'll finish another game this month.

Longtime lurker, first time poster. Gonna try and tackle at least three of these:

Kingdom Hearts 1.5 HD Remix (Feels dirty to count this as multiple games)
Alice: Madness Returns
Hyperdimension Neptunia: Victory
Call of Duty: Black Ops 2
Persona 4 Arena

1.5 will probably be done within the week, might chew through Black Ops II after that since it'd be the quickest finish.

Here is my Backlog to complete the rest of the month

One Piece: Pirate Warriors
Zone of the Enders HD Collection
Final Fantasy 13

I have had FF13 since day one and still havent completed it. Restarted it twice so hopefully third time will be a charm.

Progress:

New Super Luigi U
Stacking
Timesplitters 2
Tomb Raider

Another game down! I hadn't followed news TR at all, so I went into it not really expecting anything good or bad. Ended up loving it, one of the best games of the year. Great pacing and perfect length.

Another one down; still hoping to get through Wonderful 101 before October, but I'm only about halfway through right now and have a pretty busy end of the month. I actually really enjoyed Max Payne 3, despite a lot of negative impressions I had seen around GAF. I do love film noir though, so I'm a sucker for any story where the noir tropes bleed in.

  • Killzone: Mercenary
  • Tomba!
  • The Wonderful 101
Bonus:

  • Dungeon Hunter Alliance
  • Max Payne 3

Saint's Row IV
Might and Magic Book One: The Secret of the Inner Sanctum
HarmoKnight
Steamworld Dig
Etrian Odyssey 2
Call of Duty 2
Black Mirror

Done for the month!

Might and Magic is *huge*, but I'm really enjoying it. Should reach a conclusion sometime in late October, I suspect, if I keep at the same pace

1. Breath of Fire II
2. SteamWorld Dig
3. Etrian Odyssey IV: Legends of the Titan

Successfully finished my Breath of Fire II playthrough and made significant progress in Etrian Odyssey IV (I'm at the end of the third stratum at the moment). Also beat Super Mario Bros. & Kid Icarus (both on Wii U VC). I don't think I will be able to finish EO IV this month, though.

Red Dead Redemption
New Super Luigi U
Prince of Persia (2008)

XCOM: Enemy Unknown
Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask

New addition:
The Wonderful 101

Beat Layton and PoP. Layton was mechanically and technically the best of the series so far, the slight swap in puzzles, the death of the tap made exploration, and the 3DS visuals went a long way to making it a greater pleasure to play. The writing still was not as good as Layton 3 though, and that giant ass dungeon section in Chapter 6 was about twice as long as it needed to be.

PoP was fun, I wasn't expecting to enjoy it as much as I did. It was fairly laid back but I liked the interaction between Elika and the Prince enough that having beaten it, I'm now sad it was a one off.

On to Wonderful 101. Hopefully I can beat it before Windwaker arrives.

Pikmin 3
Saints Row 4
Metro: Last Light

Finished up Saints Row 4 earlier today and actually Platinum'd it (had to leave the PS3 on overnight for the 40 hours trophy). Finished Metro: Last Light a few minutes ago and it is one of my favorite games of the year. Absolutely amazing game that is expertly crafted and has so much attention to detail. Already looking forward to my second playthrough.

With those 3 out of the way, I'll continue with Tales of Xillia for the rest of the week or maybe start Pupeteer until I get my hands on Wonderful 101.

I went above and beyond the call of backlog. Also finished Puppeteer and Wonderful 101 for a grand total of 5 games completed this month. Currently chipping away at Tales of Xillia and Fire Emblem: Awakening. Been a while since I played a solid RPG so both are very satisfying.

uncharted 3 leftover from august finished :P
on with the next games!
*think* ill rip out zone of enders hd (to get some air from ND games), and then the last of us (moar ND games!)!
I'll try to finish both before month's end while dabbling with old gba/nes/snes games :P

ok!
uncharted 3 down!
la noire down!
kickbeat down!
i'll try to start tonight and finish it by monday night, no promises :X

Lots of gaming for me in September! I beat:
-Risen
-Primordia
-Mata Hari
-Psychonauts
I'm approaching the end of Saint's Row The Third, but I won't have any time to play it tomorrow. I also spent way too much time playing Civ V Brave New World, but it's not a game you play to completion obviously.

Rayman Legends
Donkey Kong (Game Boy)
State of Decay

Got three down!

I'm in a second play through of State of Decay. I'm enjoying it again, after the last third of my 1st play through being a bit of a slog. SoD's first half, or 2/3rds, is significantly better than its later half. Probably because by then you've seen all it has to offer, and all that's left is waiting for story missions to pop up, because there's really nothing left to do. Your base is huge, impenetrable, and overstocked on everything. Side missions where you essentially do the same thing keep popping up, but they don't give the more motivating context of the story missions. The story missions themselves aren't anything special. The game felt like a prototype. With a bigger budget and more time, this game could be really special.

Not to say it's bad. I very much enjoyed it--the gamey elements really satisfy the collector/hoarder in you, it can be very tense, especially at first. Traversing through hostile territory to scrounge what little sustenance you can is compelling. And kicking zombie ass is great. It's just, eventually you realize how shallow the basic structure is. And the low difficulty diminishes the atmosphere. The only time I died was because I was sprinting very near to my base to quickly grab some supplies, and a Feral Zombie caught me with no stamina and low health. But in general, you have to be really brash to get close to dying. And if you have another NPC with you, you're nearly invincible if you let them "tank" for you. Have 2+ with you, and it's cake. The game just isn't scary or as tense as it could of been thanks to the difficulty. I was more genuinely afraid in ZombiU during the 10 minutes I played the demo, than I was the entirety of SoD. I wouldn't buy it if you're hungry for a horror experience.

Luckily the combat is pretty fun; the game uses modifier keys to further expand your arsenal of moves. The stealth is basic but adds to the game--until you realize what a powerhouse you are; big strong you with your crowbar and your 3 stack of snacks, basically a zombie slayer of the gods, you are. But yeah, this is still a zombie sandbox game that actually works well, and is worth playing. Although, if you've never liked GTA games or similar because "all you do is drive forever to go do something boring over and over" or whatever, you definitely should not get this, you will not like it.

I'd be very interested in State of Decay 2, and am eager to see the mod community support for this game. The game is very compelling, just limited.

The Last Of Us
Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons

Not sure if i'll get another completed tomorrow or not- shall have a look see if i've got anything! :)

Finished The Wonderful 101 this afternoon, which clears all three of my targeted games, plus the two extras I beat earlier this month.

  • Killzone: Mercenary
  • Tomba!
  • The Wonderful 101
Bonus:

  • Dungeon Hunter Alliance
  • Max Payne 3

I'll try for whatever the October challenge is, but work, baby and wife she make it difficult. My backlog has never been this big (15+ titles now).
