No hype for Titanfall whatsoever. It's only made me wonder what a successor to Tribes would look like.
But he isn't wrong, is he?Nice strawman. No really, I've never heard it before.
That's assuming everyone who doesn't like Call of Duty doesn't like mechanic focused games, which is one hell of a strawman. I personally love multiplayer gaming, but I dislike Call of Duty, and Titanfall (based solely on the alpha footage) is just call of duty with large robots that don't really seem to do anything. To destroy them all you apparently do is jump on the back and hit X, and all you do inside of them is shoot like crazy just like you would normally do on the ground. Kind of baffles me why this game is so hyped.

I'm not saying it's a terrible looking game. I'm just saying that many here have a penchant for linking the two facets of a game when in fact if you go back it's rare that a truly on good looking game also has truly top notch gameplay to go with it.
God of War and Halo 4 come to mind.
Titanfall looks incredible to play, but to be frank, the visuals aren't really "up there" which is why I think so many are quick to dismiss it.
That's absolutely it. You don't see these kinds of threads about Watch Dogs or The Division, even though those games both have (or had) massive hype.
really?
There was plenty of criticism against Watch Dogs pre-delay as most of us saw it as the 43rd ubisoft bar filling open world game that it was. As for the Division there's nothing to really criticize yet, except for the fact that the graphics in the reveal demo are likely faked.
No one is or should be building those up to be "the next big thing" in their respective genres. With Titanfall, there seems to be this incessant need to remind everyone about how big and great it is, or how revolutionary it is. I wouldn't call jetpacks, hitscan weapons, and wall movement revolutionary. It seems like they've taken an established formula and added enough spice to it to make it something worth keeping an eye on.
There will be a PC beta, so that crowd (myself included) will judge it based on how it plays a shooter, not how it works as a system seller. I don't think there's anything wrong with not liking the game, or even liking parts of it while not caring for others. I personally think the AI is a waste of time and would like to see a mode without it with more players, but that's me.
It's not "all or nothing." You can like it, love it, hate it, or be somewhere between. People shouldn't have their love of the game chalked up to hype, just as those that dislike it shouldn't have to deal with the "you must be a PS4 fanboy" card. Be reasonable.
Halo 4 is a great game and looks great. Its just not a great Halo game.really?
I really don't think that's true, or at least they're not on the same level. I just searched thread titles for Watch Dogs and Titanfall. Watch Dogs had literally zero threads questioning the game's hype, while Titanfall has multiple threads about just that.
Pretty much. With the amount of threads that have been created just like this, it almost seems calculated. It certainly isn't to counter any actual positive hype threads....It definitely has to be part of it, because most people choose to ignore games they aren't interested in or ones that don't appeal to them. But for some reason, with Titanfall, people jump at every opportunity to display their displeasure with something about the game.
Kinda, mostly because it's really not that new. It's a refinement, not a revelation, yet people are treating it like it's revolutionary.
Uh...yes?
You know what gameplay is right? The combat/shooting mechanics? The feel of the game? 343 nailed how Halo 4 feels, absolutely nailed it. You can debate the other aspects till the cows come home, but one of the biggest challenges 343 was facing was making Halo 4 "feel" like Halo when you picked up the controller and started taking control of the Chief. They undoubtedly did that.

Forgive me if a similar thread may have been created recently, but I wanted to get a few things off my chest. Titanfall is a game that's been making a lot of noise as of late, with multiple E3 awards and all manner of praise from gaming publications. I just don't see the real reason for the unanimous praise and enthusiasm for this title.
Why is everybody so excited about it?
Bullshit reasons:
Mechs... which is just giant gun instead of small gun, yes a robot holding a gun rather than it being built in, with some force field magic power, developed by
something something Respawn, the new and unproven with godlike pedigree tales from my ass
who give us the flippidy doo daa 360 backflip movement every where action in your face run and gun shit people drool over
Uh...yes?

Your last paragraph probably cuts closest to the CoD allure, alongside score popups and unlocks keeping people tied to a specific game rather than hopping around. Outside of basic map knowledge getting you and edge, CoD amounts to flashlight tag compared to other shooters, whimh require different levels of mastery over the weapons. Even Battlefield simulates bullet arcs and recoil, while CoD is essentially point and shoot without much thought required. Nor to mention unavoidable killstreak rewards literally raining down from the sky to suddenly kill you.
This isn't 100℅ bad... I've always preferred to play games like CoD with friends while drinking. Who wants to manage realistic AK-47 recoil seven beers in?
It almost feels like a Western take on a Japanese theme. The mechs are like the ones in Appleseed and Patlabor, and that's pretty sweet to see instead of lumbering machines the size of buildings. I'm excited for it because it just feels a little different.
I agree. The reason I consider it probably the worst halo is solely because of multiplayer design choice. Loadouts really messed up a lot. Needs halo 2/3 ranking system. Halo was always about player skill along with team work. Ranking system meant teams genuinely cared to win and weapon placements and map design created places that teams would fight to keep or take etc. Spawning with plasma grenades and plasma pistol messes up the vehicle play. They added features that in themselves are ok but take away from the overall halo awesomeness. Sometimes simpler is better.Uh...yes?

If you're getting hyped for titanfall, just renember that these guys made modern warfare 2 and that should keep it in check.
I feel this thread is kind of endemic of most active GAF posters starting with console gaming in the SNES or PS1 era and associating either old Nintendo or cinematic, story heavy singleplayer games as the prime example of what gaming is, and then not getting that people who do multiplayer gaming first might be very excited for something that looks like it tries to blend popular multiplayer shooter trends from gen 5-6 and gen 7 together in a way they feel looks engaging.
Like I don't see any threads ever asking "Why is The Order 1886 exciting people? It's a linear cinematic corridor shooter." because we just gave GOTY to TLOU. Similarly, people getting confused about how a character from a game that has 27 million daily players beat Link, a character from a series that never even remotely approached 27 million units sold, because it's a multiplayer PC game that's notably more popular outside the US and Japan ("the gaming countries") than within them.

You really didn't enjoy your MW2 experience, did you? You never miss a chance to point out that some of this team made MW2. As if that should make people disinterested in this title.

I would gladly contribute. I know that I've questioned why people hype that game up so much despite seeing nothing but non gameplay trailers. I mean I know the answer, I'm just trying to get everyone else to be honest with themselves.
This only adds to my excitement! MW2 is my GOTG. Let's see...
+ Awesome maps (Derail, Estate, Wasteland, plenty of others)
+ Tons of viable builds
+ Great perk system
+ Flawless controls
Yeah it had some OP weapons (Model 1886 upon release was stupid) but overall, it was too much fun.
So now we're getting a new shooter with mechs and a cool jumping mechanic from that awesome development team? Sweet!

Well to be honest, I wasn't expecting this kind of response. If I had known about previous Titanfall threads, I wouldn't have posted it. And if people are so annoyed about how many there are, then why is this one 5 pages long?Nev said:I don't know why you bothered in first place, you knew what would happen. If it makes you feel better, I find this game completely uninteresting. Visuals and artstyle are atrocious imo and I like shooters where there is some kind of counterplay and skil involved, not "first sight, first kill", which is the most probable scenario judging by the alpha videos and who's behind the game.
To each his own I'm afraid.Sai-Kun said:You might think that, but having played it, I'd say you're wrong. They are certainly worthy of it, they've done it, and they've done it well.
i cant remember a new IP, with positive previews and hands on, ever having so much pre-launch backlash. thats what i find incredible.
I've often thought about going back to Hawken and giving it another chance... something about it felt more like an OK standard FPS rather than a mech combat game. I don't mind them being simple, I really liked Mechassault, for example.
I'm really excited to see the on-foot/in mech setup in a game again. What was the last one to do it in a fun way, Shogo?

Great news. I still play MW2 today, it's easily my favourite CoD game, I even rank it ahead of CoD 4.

Fingers crossed for an HD remaster.I enjoyed MW2's MP slightly more than 4, but far, far preferred 4's SP campaign. The campaign alone is really the only reason I hold 4 in such high regard compared to the rest of the series.
If we're talking strictly MP, MW2 is where it's at.
