Totilo: The PS4's Cloud Save System Is Inadequate

this should be in the OP

...and there you have it: they're not even bothered by the issue.

Scare mongering in the thread aside, it is still a fucking joke of a system.

If you are going to limit the storage space to 1GB, then force developers to have less bloated save files or something. 31MB for something lightweight like Infamous: First Light? Really?

I actually first got plus back in the ps3 days because of the addition of cloud storage to the package as I had a launch model and was terrified it would YLOD, now it is not even a tertiary feature for me as I can't store anything worth a damn on there.

Sony really can't get enough flak for this. They're stuck in the fucking stone age when it comes to cloud save infrastructure. This and the absence of PS1/2 emulation really need to be in the spotlight.

Sony whole back-end infrastructure is inadequate.

Probably went with some proprietary crap at the start, and now its a pain in the ass to migrate.

1GB was fine for PS3, but for PS4 it's absolutely unacceptable. Even when it uploads right, half my saves can't even be uploaded due to the size limit, so if my PS4 ever fails on me then I'm shit out of luck.

man, thats pretty awful. I have 100mbit and my PS4 usually downloads at around 50mbit
I'm at 50 and I usually get between 8 and 12. That might be partly because of my environment and stuff, but still, my PC right next to it can get around 40. I also have issues with staying connected to party chat and online games simultaneously all the time, but that's a whole other issue.

Yep, I even started a thread about this not too long ago. Their system is useless to me right now. I have a ton of saves on my local PS4 that simply aren't being backed up anymore.

Really hope they do something about it. 1gb is just too little.

My PC Witcher 3 save folder is 500mb, Steam stores it in their cloud.

I know for a fact that it works that way on Vita.
I remember because it's so incredibly stupid.

On the Vita yes, because they didn't want people to crack it with homebrew so soon. And the saves are so small you will usually never hit the 1gb Vita cap. And you can back up the Vita data to a PS3 or PC.

On the PS4 it does not delete the save. I have every save on there from games I no longer have installed.

This is a good article, and I am sure Sony will up it. They have to at this point since the file sizes are minimum of 11mb on average per game.

It's annoying on the PS4 to fill up, because everytime you boot up your system you're greeted with a barrage of messages.

DING! Failed to upload Save for Game 1
DING! Failed to upload Save for Game 2
DING! Failed to upload Save for Game 3
DING! Discover new power options!!!!

You can disable the upload notifications. And thank goodness I never got the power save one.

...and there you have it: they're not even bothered by the issue.

Do not know how you came to that conclusion. Anyways, Shu can be hilarious, and he acknowledged this in his trolling way, so we will see what happens.

I hate this too.

Between Driveclub, Inquisition and Apotheon, that's half the online storage for PS4. And that's just 3 games.

I thought it was 1 GB as well but then I saw this in the PS Plus support page. Did it go up?

https://support.us.playstation.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/2034/kw/PS%20Plus

Sadly no. Its 1GB per Playstation console family. So you get 1GB for use only by the PS4, 1GB for use only by PS3 and 1GB for use only by the Vita. So up to 3GB of cloud save storage if you own all three platforms, but each is only allocated 1GB.

Preach. Either fix the PS4 save size or give us more space. Better, do both.

This shouldn't be an either or LBP3 shouldn't take half a gig for a save file, nor Apotheon. Hell, the majority of cross platform games last gen and this have much smaller save files on Xbox than Playstation. Why is that? Why is the smallest PS4 save file 10mb which is larger than the smallest on Xbox One. Fix both. Maybe use some of that gaming revenue from your record quarter?

I have no idea how you guys filled 1gb with save files... I mean, I have a ps3, ps4 and vita hundreds of games, and I'm still like, halfway. :(

Each console gets its own 1GB, and Vita and PS3 saves are small, PS4 saves however aren't. Every game on my system has a minimum 10.5MB save file, doesn't matter what game, each one is at least 10.5MB. So to start with that's only 95 games, which is still quite a few, except plenty of games use multiple saves, so some have separate saves for settings and such, still 10.5MB. And then there's some games that use hundreds of MB, DriveClub for instance makes a save that is about 300MB when you for open it.

When games have such large minimums, and some are using a ridiculous amount, 1GB is simply not enough these days.

LMAO that's just Shu. Clearly Jason isn't bothered by the comment and I wouldn't be shocked if they are doing something to increase storage but don't want to say anything until they do.

Considering how some games can have individual save file close of size 50MB or more and the game itself may take up close to 400-500MB.....it's a joke that they have such limits on a paid service.

Other factors:

1) It takes too much time and effort to delete the save data as you manually have to enter the game folder and delete them one by one. And the deletion takes some time as it pops up a "Deleting" screen while it's doing so which makes the process longer overall. I certainly do not have the patience to do this 10-15 times.

2) There needs to be a pause function for games that have had their initial download finished.

Thanks for bringing this up again. Sony needs to be pressed until they up this stupid limit. I'm getting really close to hitting it right now.

Kotaku is bang-on, just ran into this problem having installed Witcher 3 and Bloodborne. Two games alone were eating up 450 MBs of space, and the minimum save file size appears to be 10.5 MB which is silly and adds to the problem.

I don't want to get caught up too much in overthinking corporate communications, but Yoshida's response had the effect of being a deflection.

Shu is known to troll like this.

He would have ignored it completely then if the goal was deflection. This wasn't an interview.

I don't think that's the reason. Or at least if it was it wouldn't make sense since when you backup a game on PC the save files are separate from the game files. Only on the Vita itself everything is bundled and gets deleted together while on PC you can just delete the game files and keep the saves if you want to save some space. I don't see how this makes anything more secure.
Seems more like a stupid oversight that Sony never bothered to fix. Same with the annoying account restriction.

Yeah I think so too. I don't know of course but that's what it looks like

He's asked about a PSN issue and his answer is about Kotaku...
Even the article by Totilo mentions that Sony has no plan to change anything:
A PlayStation rep tells me they have no plans to announce any changes to online storage
Yoshida was probably being tongue in cheek but it seems he has nothing to say about PSN issues. What PSN issues ?

They did it to lock the system down as much as possible. There was no oversight.

I don't even understand why PS4 saves are so bloated to begin with. It is as if the devs just didn't care about optimizing them. There is no reason why any game should have a 300MB save file!

It was until at some point last year that every patch was at minimum 11MB because of the PS4 SDK. While there is probably scenarios where developers didn't give a shit, the floor being 11MB because of the SDK was quite shit.

(Since January this year the minimum save file size is 3.15MB.)

This is one of the worst aspects of the PS4. So do they want me to stop buying new games? I don't want to have to worry about my saves being erased or deleted. Space should be unlimited like xbox. The fact that they have no plans to change it is absolutely ridiculous. Surely the higher ups have hit the cap already? I hope Microsoft makes a comeback so Sony stops being lazy and greedy.

Good to see them called out on this, it's absolutely ridiculous and behind the times. I'm not responsible for save sizes so they should stop punishing me for buying and playing too many fucking games.
This is advertised as part of a paid for service and is effectively non-functional.

I know for a fact that it works that way on Vita.
I remember because it's so incredibly stupid.
It's their online system that works this way and I still can't fathom how someone designed it this way and thought it was a good idea. Nevermind that they never corrected this over firmware updates.

"Inadequate" is being way too nice.

There's no reason cloud saves should have such a paltry storage limit, or does Sony just not want me to buy any more of their games?

They did it to lock the system down as much as possible. There was no oversight.
But there's nothing locked down when only on the Vita everything is bundled but once you copy the games on PC everything is suddenly unbundled. If they wanted to lock this down it would make more sense to keep everything together as one file on PC as well.
Deleting the game files while keeping the saves on the Vita wouldn't add any security risks that aren't already there with the content manager.

Yeah the system on PS4 is very silly when compared to the completely automatic Xbox One way of doing it. I don't even use the cloud saves on PS4 because of how ridiculous it is to use.

Some of the save file sizes are really quite silly. The Wolf Among Us, a game with a handful of multiple choice decisions and static checkpoints has like a 50 MB save.

Not only is it garbage, but you have to go into every individual game and delete them. You can't even pick multiple games at once to delete. It's so fucking annoying.

Maybe blame the developer for such a large save file?
When it's so widespread, you've got to wonder what the platform holder is doing to hold this at bay.
Whatever the reason, the reality of their ecosystem is that 1GB simply doesn't work, while the competition doesn't have comparable limitations.

Plus, the flat 10.5MB minimum size (that went down to 3.5MB) is on Sony's side and their first party lineup isn't exempt either. LBP3 has saves that are like 500MB.

I created a topic about this not too long ago. A gig is not enough storage, but a bigger issue is that PS4 game file sizes are way too big. Go play a completely new game for a few minutes, save, and then look at the file size. It's 10MB minimum. The same game on Steam would be a quarter of that.
