Totilo: The PS4's Cloud Save System Is Inadequate

I loved the value I got from PS+ last gen on my ps3 and maintained my account for the life of that system. Shortly after getting my ps4 I traded in my ps3 because I just wasn't using it.

I don't feel like ps+ provides near the value for ps4 users as it did ps3. I know that the ps4 hasn't been out long enough for there to be a stable of AAA free games but I am not a fan of the 2D side scrolling style games that seems to inundate the + service on the ps4.

Between that and the constant need to micromanage my cloud saves I finally dropped + in May. I am not sad about this either but I would gladly come back if they fix bullshit like the cloud saves. Adding some AAA ps4 games to the library would just seal the deal.

EDIT: Just to clarify, it is an area that I feel PS really regressed between generations. Last gen we paid for plus to get awesome games that we may not have tried and that was really the main draw for me. That and the deep discounts on some digital stuff. This gen the quality of free games and lack of discounts along with it being required now for MP have really devalued the service for me.

I also own an xbone (and a Wii U but it's really irrelevant in this conversation) and sadly it feels like MS is progressing their system and service while the ps4 has stagnated or regressed with regards to the services they provide.

I am no fanboy and would prefer for all of the consoles to be fucking amazing!

It's really bad. Maybe they'll do better.

But really 1GB has been a silly amount for a long time. It didn't just recently become anemic

I have two Xboxen one and the cloud save feature is amazing. Really really neat to be able to move from one room to the other and have my saves sync perfectly. I am really surprised to hear what an issue this is on PSN. I really hope they can get this ironed out for the PS4 crowd.

I am glad this is finally getting some attention from some gaming outlets. Like many others here, my 1GB was hit a long time ago. I've come into the habit of backing up my saves to a USB thumb drive, but that, too, is horribly cumbersome (as mentioned in the article).

Another part of the problem appears to be some kind of inane "default" save space allocation. I have a lot of PS4 games that all have save files that are exactly 10.49 MB.

Even a game like Another World, which is a port of an an Amiga game has a 10.49 MB save file. I assure you, there is absolutely NO WAY that game needs 10 MB of space to store what level you were on. It's ridiculous.

Or how about the 73.41 MB save file for Octodad?!

So, what's the deal? Shit platform design? Because no amount of laziness by a developer can result in save files this bloated for games like these where at most your storing what results to little more than a text file.

Yes it is and every thread I see about it I will post in to say I agree.

Agree.

They need to be called out constantly on bullshit like this as well as PSN speeds. My cable company bumped me from 15meg to 100 and there's literally no difference in speed on PSN, yet every other service I use there is. And they're charging us to use this shit.

...and there you have it: they're not even bothered by the issue.

People really shouldn't take Shu's tweets with any degree of seriousness. He pretty much only uses twitter to crack jokes.

people have to remember that Shu is head of WWS and not really responsible for the network, OS or hardware problems. I can't blame the users for going to him though, Sony doesn't have any other person to reach out to who give continuous feedback like he does. @askplaystation might fill this role but it seems like their normal response is "have you tried a database rebuild"?

lol, literally the first tweet when looking for an example 3 minutes ago.

man, it would be so awesome to have some sort of usb save backup option on the PS4 to avoid this...

I'm curious how many people would revisit some of their old saves as they sat in the cloud for years on end, like for Bethesda games. I had 30 saves at one time for NV for example, and at 3mb each that was almost 100mb that was using up my cloud storage. I was able to cut that down to 3. If the system allowed unlimited storage, I would not bother to delete the data because 'who cares'. That does not seem like an efficient system.

So, 1gb IS a joke (it should be something like 5), but so is unlimited cloud storage, in my opinion.

This article is terribly needed and I hope it gets pressed harder. I fucking hate the cloud system for being so tiny. 1GB is nearly not enough for this system and it irks me endlessly.

Everytime I play another game, I get that stupid online upload error which basically tells me I have no space when I have barely 12 games. At this point I'm not in for giving Sony any credit on sales and all that nonsense when shit like this goes unheard and feels like they are being purposely obtuse. Ugh...

Best argument I've heard in favor of unlimited storage is we'll only use "lots" of storage if we own lots of games. IOW, if we've given Somy lots of money.

yup. I said it before - if we're giving Sony $10 license fees each time we buy a game, that should include enough space for a reasonable save game - eg 25-50MB. Sony should include that in the license fee the publisher pays. If the game needs significantly more, then they can either negotiate that with Sony, or pay a little extra on the license fee to cover the extra storage.

That will focus minds and hopefully mean we don't get so many bloated save games (publishers won't want to pay an extra cent per copy sold), and will also ensure that consumers get effectively unlimited save space.

That is the most critical thing to be fixed. I'd also like them to look at the syncing - right now MS does it so well on XB1 that if I was likely to have multiple console, I'd tend towards XB1 because it just works. On PS4 you have to manually download and then reupload saves on any system that isn't your primary console.

I keep saying this and I'll continue to. 1GB should be plenty for save files. The problem isn't the 1GB. It's the insane fucking file size for saves on Sony platforms that's the problem. Between my 360 and Xbox One, my combined total size on saves isn't anywhere near 1GB for over 200 games.

It's the file size that's the issue

The 1GB was never an issue with PS3, and I have like 300+ PS3 games including all the free plus stuff.

Then I got a PS4 and some EA games. You could easily fill up your 1GB with nothing other than Madden franchises and Dragon Age. They are over 100mb each.

It should be unlimited or significantly expanded as a minimum.

One of the better features of the X1 honestly. I got a brand new White X1 to replace my failing TF launch model. It literally took seconds for it to pull down my save data from the cloud on all my game downloads, didn't have to do any form of backup on my end purely automatic..Meanwhile still getting that stupid cannot upload storage data notification on my ps4 though -__-"

You don't like the mandatory 500 meg save for Little Big Planet?

I hate this about the PS4. I'm constantly getting notifications that save upload failed because the cloud storage is full. It punishes power users who are buying a lot of games.

Also, why are game saves so enormous? Are they huge on XB1 as well?

Well barely anyone would notice the 1GB limit if the file size was more inline with 360 or Xbox One. My Killer Instinct save file is like 6KB for fucks sake. On PS4, that would be 10MB. There's your problem.

I have one replay saved on Driveclub that's 209.8 MB and it's 1 minute 38 seconds long. One Replay. 209.8 MB.

What kind of data is it even storing? Controller input data, weather/time of day data. The replay should be like 100KB at most.

Yeah, I don't get why saves have to be a minimum of 10.49 MB. Makes no sense.

lol, those constant notifications are one of the reasons I gave up on PS+. I'm not cleaning that crap every week, and I don't really care that much about game saves for games that I'm not in the middle of playing anyway.

I agree. I am sick of cheap games like Entwined, Road Not Taken, Super Exploding Zoo, MouseCraft, Futuridium EP Deluxe, Woah Dave (ugh), etc. I miss getting larger AAA retail titles that I am more likely to enjoy and games that actually have stories. It was really cool to get a game like Bioshock Infinite a year after launch even though it was like $40 on Amazon. Now, we get mostly crap even on PS3. This is the result of Sony not having to justify the $50 through games since they tied online to PS+. I wish Microsoft would shame Sony into going back to the PS3 days but they suck too. Even PSN has become way less stable since they started charging for it. I only subscribe to unlock the other half of many of my games that Sony is holding hostage.

Agreed. It's one of the most annoying things I've noticed about PSN. I don't actually use it often because it's always full and managing it is not user-friendly.

No it's not video. It's an ingame replay from a time trial (you have full camera controls).

Oh ok. That may be an outlier then given the context. But just traditional save files are ridiculously fucking big. That's the only reason anyone even knows there's a 1GB limit. Sony only has 2 realistic long term choices now.

Go unlimited, which it seems they're hesitant to do for whatever reason, or somehow completely overhaul their save system. There must be some really fucking poor architecture going on in the background for a developer to be unable to make tiny save files.

So, 1gb IS a joke (it should be something like 5), but so is unlimited cloud storage, in my opinion.

Not for $50 a year it isn't. For that much money, Sony has no excuse not to give us unlimited storage for game saves.

Steam has effectively unlimited storage for cloud saves because it handles saves per game, not per account. And the service is FREE. PSN has no excuse for being worse than a free service.

Inklings of it into a PS+ bashing now.

Sorry, I tried to stay on topic but I do feel that the cloud save system is a symptom of a larger problem in general.

That said I am not here to bash Sony or PSN, I just want the service to improve and I will gladly pay for it again.

That is all I am saying too. Sony really did a great job selling PS+ initially but I knew it couldn't stay that way forever. But lowering the quality of free games and discounts while at the same time making + mandatory for online play has just turned me off of the service completely.

The constant notification garbage and upload errors for game saves as well as the difficulty in managing anything on PSN (ie. friend and file management) were all factors too.

I am just glad that PSN hasn't bundled the streaming services in with +. I absolutely love the spotify integration.

Are saves encrypted? Perhaps saves are built on a virtual file system and that's the size of the volume. </random guess>

It's funny that there's no real way to cheat the system (is there?) and use more space than the games you rightfully paid for. This system has no reason not to be infinite for that reason alone, it's only truly infinite for those who've bought every game they can get their hands on, which is what Sony wants...right?

So, 1gb IS a joke (it should be something like 5), but so is unlimited cloud storage, in my opinion.

As I said, my web hosting gave me unlimited storage for not much more than PS+ for a year and I could upload everything to that. PS+ only lets you upload saved game data, which you can only get by playing games. You're penalised for owning more games.

Has anybody else noticed the bug where if you have too many "can't upload save" notifications then you can't upload a video/screenshot to FB/YouTube?

It fails and gives you some weird error code. The failure is because it can't give you a notification that the upload completed. Just terrible.

Is that what causes it? I usually delete something from Cloud Storage to fix it....

The only way you get cloud saves is to be PS+....so why the hell wouldn't PS+ be in scope?

Yeah, just ignore that they were bitching about the free games offered, etc.

Where were we again? Oh yeah, unlimited or if they need a cap for partitioning reasons, have it high enough to not effect anyone.

Also, AFAIK, you cannot specify which games have their saves auto uploaded and which don't on PS4. It's either all saves or none.

With PS3 and Vita you could individually select which games you want using the cloud. They really need to add that to PS4, even if they add unlimited storage.
