Jericho-HBK had one of the best WWE feuds of the past 5 years back in '08, but their Wrestlemania match is still my favorite. Watching the promo leading up the match really gives it that extra edge to the storytelling, because its all about Jericho trying to prove he's better then Shawn, at his own game at "Mr. Wrestlemania's" home turf. He tries so hard, he pulls out all the moves, even some of Michaels, but he just can't get it done. HBK offers a handshake, then a surprisingly classy hug from Y2J. It's a nice moment...then BAM Jericho kicks him in the balls and shoves him down, then flips off the audience, cursing to himself while walking out. Chris sold that story well after the match was over. Good stuff.

Speaking of HBK, I was watching some old matches, and I forgot how cartoony Vince was on commentary.

stop doing it punk :(

stop doing it punk :(

Why? And his isn't supposed to look like Michaels' anyway

So which HBK does everyone like more, before or after Jesus HBK? I personally feel that cocaine Michaels was a better wrestler and was generally a more entertaining guy, but Jesus Michaels had some of the better feuds and matches.

Yeah, Batista was worse than Cena at one point. It wasn't until Brotista that he became watchable imo.

lol

You know who was worst of all? The Rock.

Watch Summerslam 03. The fans practically boo'd him the entire match. Brock was being the cocky heel the whole time and got more cheers.

It wasn't at the level of MitB 2011 but it's damn close

of course he was worst. We allllllllll got sick of him.

Peoples elbow, what a load.

At least the five knuckle shuffle ends faster.

Well, yeah. It happens to all annoying kiss ass faces, which is what Rock was at the time.

Rock should be the heel in the match. He left WWE to do movies while Cena did movies and continued to be at every Raw and PPV. Cena is always speaking the truth about Rock but the smarks don't want to believe it.

well...he wasn't kissing much ass at that time period. He got the WWE title in a triple threat match at the July ppv because Undertaker didn't want to job to Brock at Summerslam. The whole build up for Rock/Brock was based on them training for a real fight. I don't think they even made contact with each other until the Raw before Summerslam.

Thanks for reminding me of the time when faces were allowed to lose clean without any outside interference or distractions.

No, CM Punk spoke the truth about Rock. He wasn't even in the feud, yet was saying what Cena was suppose to be saying. Instead, we got a bunch of jokes from Cena while Rock was dropping truthbombs on his corny ass.

psssssh Rock laid down for everyone

I don't remember Stone Cold losing clean much once he got the belt. The only time I can recall Austin getting pinned with no help was WM 19

Pretty much, it's really annoying watching Cena just turn every feud he's in to a "I respect the hell out of you!" and laughing off everything.

I kind of agree, pre-back injury was the better persona and wrestling character.

Post-back injuries has a lot more quality matches under his belt, but I guess he had that confidence now.

Brock was a machine, that's why he was rising so fast.

Rock didn't need anything at that point. He was at the stage of putting over guys just for the hell of it. Jeff Hardy, Hurricane Helms, and trolling crowds like Sacramento and Toronto.

EDIT: Agree with Penguin on Michaels, pre-back injury was a far better character, and performer, but he was still great nonetheless.

damn, dem teeth

Also, concur with Penguin/Striker, 92-95 HBK was his peak, as a performer and as a character, but I'd say 75% of my favorite Shawn Michaels matches come from his comeback found Jesus stage. The Undertaker matches, HHH street fight, triple threat matches with HHH and what's-his-face, all those great Jericho bouts, etc. He still had some damn fine acting abilities too, in and out of the ring, as seen in the intensity he brought to the Jericho feud of 2008. I think the comeback part of his career really just cemented him as the GOAT, imo.

Too bad he pretty much missed the boat completely with the Rock, would have loved to see that match-up. He was gone for the four years Rock was in prominence, and by the time HBK was back full-time, Rock was in Hollywood :/

I'm also sad we never really got a proper Austin/HBK feud match.

Yeah, I realize they had WrestleMania 14, but since HBK was working that match injured... it was nothing special.

Probably would have never happened anyway since The Rock hated HBK's guts for years.

Michaels/Austin at King Of The Ring '97 was a better look at what could've been.

And yeah, pre back injury/Jesus HBK was a better on screen character and performer, but his comeback run has a lot of his best matches.

Agreed, HBK/Austin WM14 was a good match, but it was not the torch-passing epic everybody wanted it to be. No real fault of the workers involved of course, HBK back was fucked to hell, but the match was definitely wanting.

But, I'm eternally grateful to see HBK come back and have great matches with a lot of the current superstars at the time, like Edge, Cena, Shelton, *****, Angle, there was even a hysterical Hogan match! Maybe my favorite Hulk match, actually!

edit: Oh hey, ***_******* is right, HBK/Austin at KotR97 was fantastic! I remember they were reluctant tag team champs at the time, and it was odd they had to fight each other. That was the match WM14 should have been.

***_******, you are a well-known terrorist and by the standards set upon by interim GM Heavy, I have to cease with the acknowledgement of your name.

The Rock hated HHH as well but they feud for a good long while.

I'm sure if the timing worked and the rock was around for a year longer it would have happened just so they could do a synchronized jump up thing that they both do.

While The Rock hates HHH (and still hates him to this day), I remember someone said it went more personal with HBK. Something about disrespecting him mom.

They made up last year though. HBK keeps making up with people, HHH keeps holding grudges.

On that note of people HBK missed a feud/match with, the biggest travesty is we never saw HBK and Eddie Guerrero in a match together.

Also, on that note of Rock circa 2002, he was definitely in a similar place to Cena now, totally sanitized and packaged, all his former bite and entertainment value sapped out of him. It's funny to watch him as a heel in 1998, where he casually says "if you smell what the Rock is cooking" in its original meaning during promos, which is "if you know what I mean". Now he says it really loudly because...he always says it. I don't know.

Luckily Rock came back in 2003 as a heel for a some feuds with Hogan, Austin and Goldberg (and the Hurricane on the side) and produced some of his funniest stuff ever, all without relying on his millions (and millions) of catchphrases.

Now? He's right back to his tired 2002 persona, but the crowd are such marks for the Attitude Era that they eat it right up. If he was on every week doing that, they'd get sick of it pretty damn fast.

I really want Austin to come back for a final, final run. He'd make it about the feud, and dedicate all his time to the show, not pop in every once in a while. Austin/Punk would be magnificent.

Austin NEEDS one more run. He needs to go out with a final bang. And honestly, with so many people within WWE pushing for it, I think Austin/Punk will happen eventually. It just needs to happen sooner rather than later. Austin isn't getting any younger. My only concern is that they'd probably need to turn Punk heel for it to work properly, and they won't do that as long as his merch is selling like hotcakes.

But then again, maybe they don't need to turn him heel. Maybe it could work with neither man being a clearly defined heel. I'd probably prefer it that way, honestly.
