Trump and Putin had 'good' talk about ending Syria war, White House says

The two leaders held their first known phone discussion since last month’s US missile strikes against a Syrian government airbase soured relations between Washington and Moscow.

“President Trump and President Putin agreed that the suffering in Syria has gone on for far too long and that all parties must do all they can to end the violence,” a White House statement said. “The conversation was a very good one, and included the discussion of safe, or de-escalation, zones to achieve lasting peace for humanitarian and many other reasons.”

The US said it would be sending a representative to ceasefire talks in Astana, the capital of Kazakhstan, on Wednesday. Trump and Putin also discussed cooperation to “eradicate terrorism” throughout the Middle East and how best to resolve the “very dangerous” situation in North Korea.

A Kremlin readout of the phone call said Trump and Putin had focused on the “possibility of coordinating Russian and US actions for the fight against international terrorism in the context of the Syria crisis” and agreed to work to establish a real ceasefire there.

As for North Korea, Putin called for “restraint and lowering the level of tension” on the Korean peninsula.

The readout also laid a timeline for the long awaited face-to-face meeting between Trump and Putin, who had voiced admiration for each other before tensions rose last month.

The two leaders “spoke out … in favour of organising a personal meeting in connection with the session of the Group of 20 summit in Hamburg on 7-8 July”.

Our best hope is that any agreement keeps jihadists out of power and leads to a democratization process.

When are you going to compliment him and invite him over to the white house? You love dictators, you so want to be one.

Wow I thought relations not been this bad since the cold war.

Wow, amicable chat? Amazing! almost as if relations weren't bad at all and it was just a bullshit line about the cold war.

Seriously where the fuck are the russia investigations at.

Would be hilarious if the WH had said "It was sadly not a very productive conversation which really amounted to nothing at all."

Yeah, right.

Never stopped. Media might be reporting on other issues, but the investigation is still going. In fact it was just reported today that Sally Yates will be testifying about Flynn sometime next week (the 8th, I think).

Everyone needs to remember that investigations of this magnitude take time.

How is that supposed to happen as long as Russia backs Assad?

Russia doesn't care about Assad as much as they want to preserve a pro-Russian administration. Russia seems optimistic that this can happen even with democracy, because their earlier proposal demanded elections and term limits.

Feeling this will be impossible if Russia is anywhere near the process.

Look at who they are supporting for Chechnya for example.

Apples and oranges. All of the Syrian jihadist groups are fighting Russia and the Syrian government, and many of these groups have received aid from Turkey, Saudi, and NATO countries.

Here's that line again. Not rehearsed at all...

White House tends to give out shitty readings of phone calls. Kremlin said they are meeting in July in Germany.

"Trump and Russia agree to end Syria war" sounds an awful lot like they're gonna both prop up the current regime now.

There's no viable alternative. Both NATO and the regime helped crush any viable secular opposition outside of Rojava.

So what's going on with the Russia investigations.

seeing as how Trump's number one opponent was a foreign policy expert who ran a $1.2 billion a negative campaign against him for nearly a year and yet she reported to the voting public nothing about this massive conspiracy of treason, it's vaporware; the Democrat's version of Benghazi.

This is matched only in its wrongness by its borderline incoherence.

So, did Trump remind Putin that he's got to get the fuck out of Crimea before any association would be allowed between the two countries?

Is this supposed to be entertaining?

There will still be a civil war though...

That's not peace.

No, but it's a war that we're not involved in and exacerbating. The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. (bombing the shit out of everyone)

With that in mind, the idea of "safe zones" is potentially a good idea, yet very risky. It's better than Hillary Clinton's genius "no fly zone idea", at least.
