Ubisoft hate?

I love Ubisoft. AC is one of my favourite series ever and I really appreciate that they are trying to make new IPs. Shame they don't get more credit for it while most other pubs are just milking the franchises. And yes, I know Ubi is milking theirs too but like I said at the same time they are always releasing new games - like For Honor now or Wildlands soon. And they release neat smaller games like Valiant Hearts every now and then. I does not always work that well but damn, at least they are trying.

LOL right. maybe in the sense that its so disgustingly bad its good. the gameplay of almost all of their big budget games ranges from absolute garbage to barely mediocre. only AC Unity after all the patches wasnt a massive pile of jank(on a fast pc)

Nice to read a well thought-out, non-hyperbolic response with plenty of specific examples, just like how I provided.

Like, I don't even know which game you're referring to.

"So disgustingly bad its good"? Not a single one of their "AAA" games from the last two years has a review score under 70 (except for two Xbox One ports). "Disgustingly bad". Dafuq am I reading.

Ubisoft makes the Greatest games to podcast to, While alot of them do suffer from cookie cutter game loops sometimes its just nice to zone out and turn off your mind

Uplay has been sending me messages in French for years to my email. Turns out someone used my name @gmail.com to sign up for them in france. Makes sense, this has happened before. He got a PS4 in late 2015 and linked his PSN account to it. Finally I got around to unlinking it, not that he played that many Ubi games as he only had about 20 notifications, but he keeps in the game with the latest one being only a week or so ago. Now Hopefully I can get Ubi to stop sending me shit about For Honor no matter how many times I unsubscribe.

ghost recon wildlands is absolute garbage. how do they playtest it and think "yep, this is good!"

I'm not a fan of Ubisoft at all. There a company that made the odd random good game such as Rayman, Beyond Good and Evil and Child of Light.

They make some of the most generic manufactured crap out in the gaming industry. The same kind of crap that you would imagine in a distropian future where it's all grayscale and you're served gruel, but instead served copies of Assassins Creed.

Speaking of, what a bland and boring series. Played through 1 and found it terrible. Played 2 and quite half way and after watching a friend go through the 3 entry and I've come to the conclusion it's just a crap and lifeless series that was bad to begin with. It's the same point I had earlier where it's a lifeless generic factory made game where it's only highly praised because there wasn't much out there; like it and people probably don't expand their horizons to actually look at good games but just accept Assassins Creed and consider them good. This can be applied to any Ubisoft title.

Far Cry. Man I dunno but that was a dead series. I get people praise Vaas but I after watching it, I found the performance insanely overacted, cringeworthy and laughable. It's the only good part of the game too. But yeah, every time Vaas opens his mouth it's a cringeworthy performance. Apply this to all the other generic Ubisoft titles like Watch Dogs, The Division, Rainbow Six and Ghost Recond.

My other issue is their relationship with Nintendo. They showed off Red Steel for the Wii and man that looked hype. But this is where the whole misleading stunts started to come in. Then it turned out complete and utter rubbish.
Then they did the same with Zombi U. A promising title for the Nintendo launch that utilises the new controls? Of course that was misleading too and resulted in the game being crap.

I hadn't bought a Ubisoft game since. Even Rayman Origins which was a great game, is a game I borrowed since supporting Ubisoft is not worth the money.

Then in 2015, I bought 2 Ubisoft games. As a big fan of Tetris I was offended to hell when they released that awful "Ultimate" Tetris on the Xbox One and PS4. I then ended up buying the Japanese release of Puyo Puyo Tetris. How the hell do you get Tetris so wrong?
The second game was Child of Light and that had it's own problems too. One problem being the game would occasionally slow down and the other being that my achievements wouldn't unlock. I had to delete people from my friends list just to get this one last achievements. You give Ubisoft another chance (or 2) and they still mess this up.

Every thing about Ubisoft is just one huge life. Misleading trailers, gameplay, insulting DLC and business practices and games that are shallow as hell, yet people still support them and buy their games.

Sure they have, they just don't make anime games so they don't cater to your thirst for waifus.

Nah they have that waifu area covered too.

Among the big publishers, I feel like Ubi's got a good balance of the typical annual franchises, interesting new takes on older series, and coming up with new IP. For example: Trackmania Turbo, The Division, Rayman Origins and Legends, Watchdogs 2, Child of Light, Grow Home, Rainbow 6 Siege, The Crew, Steep, Far Cry 3. I've dropped off the Asscreed train, but that latest one seems to do some neat stuff. Honestly not bothered by the iterative nature of some of their franchises. Nobody's making me buy their games, and I just check back in every few sequels and am pleasantly surprised.

Uplay is pretty decent nowadays, from my experience. Earning achievements nets you Uplay points, which you can then exchange for a 20% discount on top of anything in their store. Got some games that were already discounted for really cheap.

I love Ubisoft for Rainbow 6 Siege

Or at least I love the devs and the people who believed in the game. I cant stand the cheap bastards for not improving the servers or whatever it is that is causing so many issues

They seemingly plan to go into full dedicated servers sometie this year so There's that

They did and still do some stupid things like bullshots and graphic downgrades (in my opinion they didn't do this since Watch_Dogs and Siege reveal)
They still do it now. Compare Ghost Recon beta footage to their initial "gameplay" footage. It's not a universal problem -- I'm pretty sure For Honor footage was always legit -- but it's an ongoing issue and I find it obnoxious.

That said it's hardly unique to Ubisoft, and I do agree with your basic point. Some posters routinely go off on how they're the absolute worst, and I just don't get it at all. Ubisoft routinely releases "weird" stuff and I appreciate that. Sometimes it's a full blown game that's bizarre, sometimes it's side content in a massive AAA release (ex: there's some really interesting stuff about gender identity and the male gaze in Assassin's Creed 4), sometimes it's integral like that completely made-up language in Far Cry Primal. (Quick, name another AAA shooter which is completely subtitled in a language nobody on the planet speaks. And uh, doesn't have guns.) You can obviously criticize them for some of the safe, homogenized approaches they take to their game structures, but Ubisoft pushes plenty of creative, unusual content too.

I just think a lot of people get too hung up on the 'downgrades' (which implies it was real to start with -- usually not the case). Again, they suck and I'm not making a real excuse for it, but it's something basically every publisher does at least occasionally. I don't understand how you can burn Ubisoft for it while ignoring Nintendo with Zelda, Microsoft with Quantum Break, From Software, Rockstar Games, Square-Enix, Capcom, etc.

- Their games are not very good
- Their AAA games are way too samey
- They popularized the bland, paint-by-numbers AAA open-world game that's fucking everywhere (and is fucking terrible)
- They have a long history of bullshitting about their games (bullshots, fake MP video footage, downgrades, and even reverse bullshots)
- Releasing pathetically unfinished games like AC: Unity
- Ridiculously long credits (seriously, fuck off)
- Aisha Tyler
- uPlay
- Their games are really just not very good

What's the issue with Aisha Tyler?

Everything else you mention is spot on though. A Ubisoft logo on a game has me instantly lose interest.

Yeah, I don't care for Ubisoft and I honestly do understand the hate, sorry OP. I like Rayman Legends and Valiant Hearts, but that's about it.

This sums up my views.
I liked Beyond Good and Evil back in the day, Rayman is usually really good, Grow Home looks great, and Scott Pilgrim was pretty alright, but everything else is off putting, generic, boring, and representative of the AAA phenomenon where despite the money behind the game, its an uninspired pop culturey crappy game meant to appeal to duderitos with poor taste.

And yeah, their credits seem to include eeryone who has ever worked at any ubisoft branch in the world, including whoever sprays out their urinals.

It's not that I hate them per say. I'm just bored of them. Far Cry, Watch Dogs, and Assassin's Creed are all the same game with different skins.

A game featuring an Native American during the American Revolution is "off putting, generic, boring and meant to appeal to duderitos with poor taste."

A game inspired by the Nepalese Civil War, exclusively featuring Asian characters is "off putting, generic, boring and meant to appeal to duderitos with poor taste."

A pirate game focusing on naval combat is "off putting, generic, boring and meant to appeal to duderitos with poor taste."

A Trackmania game in 2016 is "off putting, generic, boring and meant to appeal to duderitos with poor taste."

It's not that I hate them per say. I'm just bored of them. Far Cry, Watch Dogs, and Assassin's Creed are all the same game with different skins.

Explain to me how an fps and a third person action games with assassin's focused on close combat the same.

They have really stepped up in terms of genre variety. Rainbow 6, Division, For Honor are all fairly unique. I happen to love all three of those so I'm cool with them. That's not even counting Watch Dogs, Far Cry, Steep, etc. They got it all covered. And support for (most of) these games are examples to most other companies.

So Ubisoft games are bland and soulless because according to that "article":

-Some of them are open world
-They often feature characters who interect with the protagonist
-There's side missions and collectibles
-Some of them feature combat
-Some of the main characters are white guys (Really? Not like Evie, Ajay, Conor, Aveline and freaking Altair exist)
- They often feature several editions
-Sometimes they make good pc port and sometimes they don't
-There's stealth section in them
-The story is average at best

Oh and they're on different platforms.

Now what is exclusive to Ubisoft in that list?

Hint: none, you could take this list and apply it to Rockstar and it would be as accurate of a description (not really helpful).
lol, someone should give Crossing Eden's title to you, your defensiveness is adorable. Are all Ubisoft fans so humourless they can't even take a little satirical article at the expense of the games it makes? Also note the date on the article, of course it's a little outdated about the white guy thing, but that doesn't invalidate the rest.

Btw, I detest Rockstar games, probably even more so than Ubisoft games, so no dice on that "gotcha" attempt. That said, yes, the fact that so many games imitate the Ubisoft formula does indeed make their games formulaic. Like... duh, that's what it means. I said in my first post that they popularized this trash, and I was lamenting the fact.

"So disgustingly bad its good"? Not a single one of their "AAA" games from the last two years has a review score under 70
Oh boy, the review score argument. Those are always good
for a laugh

Sure they have, they just don't make anime games so they don't cater to your thirst for waifus.
...What

What's the issue with Aisha Tyler?

She's obnoxious and unfunny. Total cringe every time she shows up on stage and starts blathering.

I laughed at this post way more than I probably should have xD

You linked this as a way to argue that Ubisoft games are the same and don't have a "heart or a soul" not my fault if that wasn't really saying anything.

You not liking Rockstar games doesn't change anything I said. What you complain about are open world features not exclusive to Ubisoft. It wasn't a "gotcha" attempt, just a way to show you how vague and not compelling those "complaints" are.

Also asking for facts when someone is saying nonsense is pretty normal.

Oh and nice attack, you sure got me! Always happens when the "Ubisoft is the worse!!!!" crowd is asked to back up their claims.

It's a love/hate

I can't say I hate their games as I enjoyed Division and i'm playing AssSynDick and amazed at how AssCreed has changed since last gen. (I skipped Unity)

Also, they seem like the only other big publisher doing a variety of "genres" so more power to them.

I don't hate them per-se but they are just kind of *there*, haven't touched a Ubi game since Black Flag and I didn't even get far in that one. Their open world formula though is truly terrible, and unlike The Witcher 3 it doesn't have the well written side quests to back it up.

"I haven't played these games but they're terrible." That sums up quite a bit of the most adamant Ubisoft haters honestly.

Assassins Creed games are exactly the kind of games I like - huge locations to explore in historical settings. I can't wait for the one set in Ancient Egypt.

Far Cry is less my thing - there are so many other games where I'm just staring behind my gun. I was fed up of Far Cry 4 after about eight hours of it.

No hatred for them here - I'll just buy the games I want and leave the rest.

Ubisoft topics are always free season to drive-by shitpost. The hate they get in NeoGAF is ridiculous.

And people always post the same, easily torn down arguments.

"Ubisoft has no variety in their games!"
Except they're the one of the most variety filled AAA publisher in the industry.

"Ubisoft milks franchises dry!"
Which is totally why AssCreed took a break last year. Why their wildly successful new IP, Watch_Dogs, didn't get released the year after the last.

"Ubisoft appeals to the mass market!"
... Yes, it's a AAA dev, those tend to appeal to the mass market. Yet, Ubisoft tends to have the most amount of variety in main characters for their AAA games, something that's so rare in mass market appeal. Women, PoC, Queer individuals, these are not something you see from practically any other AAA developer.

"Ubisoft games play the same!"
Absolutely positively false. People like to say this because "towers", yet don't actually care for the underlining mechanics in those games which are varied and fairly different. This also ignores basically half of Ubisoft's output, which are. in fact, not Open World Games.

"Uplay!"
Uplay is serviceable. It's not the annoyingly destructive software it was when it launched. It works.

"Aisha Tyler!"
Sod off.

I respect every member here who posted and said that they don't like their games. That is your right and nothing is wrong with that, this thread is not pointed towards you :D

But again even in this thread when i posted in OP that Ubisoft will release 4 totally different AAA games (genre, thematic...) people still came and posted how Ubisoft only does AC and FC games. Some people went even further wishing that Ubi (company with 10K employees) goes down. I will never understand that.

I never used to like Ubisoft, but I think they are doing a much better job with games like Rainbow Six and For Honor.

I don't have any hate, in fact I praise them for supporting Nintendo longer then the other AAA. My biggest complaint (if I had one) is I don't care for most of their game franchises. I can't even remember the last Ubisoft game I purchased, but it was probably AC2.

I never understood the Ubisoft hate. My complaints are pretty minor. I think the milk franchises like Assassin's Creed too much and some of their game mechanics are too similar to other games but that's really it.

Yes, they've had some glitches and bugs when games are first released but we are taking about AAA games with a lot that can go wrong. What I appreciate about the company is they are willing to take risks on IPs, release games on underselling platforms and really push graphical capabilities. I play mostly on PC and without exception, they make great PC ports with a ton of options and I have never once had their games crash.

I just finished Watch Dogs which is years old now on PC and played it at 1440p resolution. It looked better than most newly released games and it ran super smooth even on Ultra. It may sound like a shill post but I love Ubisoft and always look forward to their games. They are like old Konami and Capcom to me and I always trust that their games are always going to be a certain level of quality.

Absolutely.

Ubi represent everything I dislike about AAA development.

I haven't been excited about an Ubisoft game since.... AC1 I think?

I like Aisha Tyler. That's about it.

I don't hate them though. There games just don't do anything for me. Only one I ever got super excited for was I Am Alive. And they managed to fuck that up.

If they put effort into being more leaner / or wide leaner with an improved focuse on storytelling. And less everything they currently are. My interest in their games would rise.

But hey if people like what they do and they want to continue to keep doing it. It's cool. Plenty of other options on the market to choose from.

There's just something that has never clicked for me in a ubisoft game. I've tried AC, AC brotherhood, Black Flag, Far Cry 2, Far Cry 4, Blooddragon, and even Rayman. After 1 hour, I just stop playing and have no desire to ever go back.

Just seen this awesome post.

Why are we still discussing this?

Just seen this awesome post.

Why are we still discussing this?

Because this forum is for discussion? Because people have a wide variety of opinions that they are free to express or disagree with?

On topic, I have a bit of a love/hate relationship with Ubisoft. I appreciate a lot of what they do, as the variety of games they release is greater than that of every other big publisher in the industry (they give the time of day to niche games like Rayman, Valiant Hearts, Child of Light, Rainbow Six Siege, Trackmania, etc.). They've been making some pretty big strides in promoting more diversity in games in recent years, which is always a good thing (Watch Dogs 2 being the biggest example, but we also have things like AC3 having a Native American protagonist, which is rather unprecedented).

At the same time, their biggest flaw to me, and to many others, is the fashion in which the handle their open world games. They create these lovingly rendered and beautifully designed spaces, yet rarely do they become canvases for interesting gameplay, and when they do, it's generally repeated over and over (which isn't always a bad thing, but I feel it can reduce the novelty of a given scenario). They fill them with menial tasks and collectibles that aren't interesting to interact with. It's really frustrating, but I don't think things are this way because of a lack of talent, they're this way because it's "safe".

Even with the aforementioned flaws, I rarely hate their open world games. I just feel ambivalent towards them much of the time, which is unfortunate, because I know they are capable of much better.

Ubisoft is my favorite third party developer!

Rayman and Rocksmith are some of the best modern franchises to ever exist, that sets them WAY ahead for me. Also I LOVED Watch Dogs sooooo yeah! Love Ubi :3

"I haven't played these games but they're terrible." That sums up quite a bit of the most adamant Ubisoft haters honestly.

Yay to selective reading.

He said:

Meaing he could have played AC1, 2, Brotherhood, Revelations and 3. And even then the formula was tired as hell. I haven't played Witcher 3 so I can't speak to the quality of their side quests but I can say that having done every side quest in the first 4 Assassin's Creed games, they're the lowest of the low.

But it's cool to hate on valid opinions of others if they don't mesh with yours.

I'm with you OP. I don’t really care for the company outside of a few games they made in the 2000s and the surprisingly good Rayman Legends. I've stopped supporting Ubisoft

In addition, they also release PC ports late (THQ even trolled them about this) and their review/DLC/microtransaction practices suck (I remember something about AC Unity reviews not going live until *after* the game released).

However, I do like Aisha Tyler because it makes the Ubisoft E3 conference bearable.

Except they're the one of the most variety filled AAA publisher in the industry.
They have variety but look at how bland and lifeless and generic they are. I mean, they're entry to fighting games was that shit known as Fighters Within.

Which is totally why AssCreed took a break last year. Why their wildly successful new IP, Watch_Dogs, didn't get released the year after the last.
Dude there were two Assassins Creed games released last year
Assassin's Creed Chronicles: India and Assassin's Creed Chronicles: Russia.
Plus the movie towards the end of the year.

Uplay is serviceable. It's not the annoyingly destructive software it was when it launched. It works.
It's a service that works but on a platform such as a console gaming where I'm already jumping through hoops, the last thing I want is another one at no benefit to me.

Ubisoft is a bland uninspiring company who just throws out tripe with little to no thought so is gobbled up by the masses.

The hate for Ubi is ridiculous. They make great games for the most part. A bit stale if you buy in every year, but I have no problems on my PC with Uplay at all. Even Watch Dogs 2 with its anti-cheat doesn't seem too bad.

One of my favorite games is Steep. What the hell? They have little artsy games and big open world games along with a couple shooters. I have no idea why people suspend their emotions from 4 years ago because of Uplay. It works now. If it doesn't work fix your PC.

I looked over the PSN sale going on right now and I was tempted to buy AC Syndicate because I heard it was better than Unity for 19,99€ (never pay more than 20 bucks for a computer game etc), but then I saw all the mission packs and DLCs available, three or four of them... 5€ here, 7€ there, makes me feel like I wouldn't get the full game for my money.

So I didn't buy it after all.

literally just happened and just a little anecdote that felt appropriate for this thread

I mean treat the sales how you want to. You don't have to buy it. A lot of games have transactions to make for DLC. I really don't see the big deal at all.

The only Ubisoft game im currently looking forward to is the South Park game. All the other games are awful to me.

I hope they have a South Park Release date to tell soon :/

Sure. I mean, they sell all this stuff separately because it works, people buy it and spend more this way.

Generally, I've enjoyed the smaller stuff Ubisoft-owned studios have put out, like Grow Home and Grow Up from Reflections or Valiant Hearts from Ubisoft Montpellier. And of course, they still employ one of my favourite videogame directors in Michel Ancel, so that's something I always keep an eye out for.

Yeah for sure more than most devs they balance art and commerce out pretty well IMO.

And Steep is amazing as well. I mean I have no idea why GAF is not all over this game. SSX is nowhere near here and Steep is the best new sim game for me. I love when Ubi takes risks on things like Steep and The Crew.

Hell, I didn't pick up The Crew til it was free on PC, but I bought the expansions and the game is actually very good.

As a gamer I can't imagine not liking at least one or two of their games. That's insane to me. Especially with the new crop of them up. Between Primal, Child of Light, Blood Dragon, Steep, South Park, Watch Dogs 2, or Rayman you like nothing?

Geez man.

I wouldn't say I hate them. They're just kind of...lame, for a lack of better words.

I'd say the most notable reason is they're a company that is notoriously full of shit when it comes to their final product of a game that turns out to be nothing like what was presented at their always hard to watch E3 conferences. That's a big no no in my book.

The games themselves aren't anything I find particularly interesting due to the similar gameplay loop found in all of them that got tiresome by AC3, which was my stopping point for Ubisoft games. Basically Morrigan Stark's post.

And they have a history of shitty business practices. Although they've definitely gotten less shitty, but are still times where I look at one of their games that have absurd season passes, shortcut DLC that offer you to pay your way to content automatically rather than spending time unlocking it in-game, micro transactions, all of those special editions of a game they want you to pre-order.

Again, they're not the devil, just...lame.
