Ubisoft hate?

Yeah, ubisoft never does this. I mean that lady who spent 2 years of her life modelling the Notre Dame Cathedral, not to mention the rest of the team who spent 5 years recreating Paris didn't put any effort into it. Nope none at all. Or the fact they released 7 games in a row all meticulously crafting worlds, creating new assets for new iterations (2-Revelation) (3-Rogue) (Unity-Syndicate)

I don't even like unity. I think its a poor game, but trying to say "oh they recycle the same things over and over despite having money and resources to do it" is inane. Hell the reason I dislike unity is because the new mechanics they added in were not good.

Do you actually think every ubisoft game has the same budget behind it? You think FarCry Primal is a 100 million dollar game? Fucking hell budget =/= quality, look at Destiny. A good portion of budget is for marketing anyways and not all of that money goes into development costs.

Finally you don't even explain "what makes ubisoft games lazy" with examples. You just make broad statements saying "their games are bad" and then say "oh other games doing the same thing are better for some reason"

Just fucking say "you don't like their formula" instead of "this is a bad game" and give no real explanation as to why it is a bad game.

I wasn't talking about the art side of things, Ubisoft is probably top of the industry when it comes to graphic design. It's just that, you know, video games are an interactive medium, aaaaand once you pick up the controller is when I start to have problems with their output.

I also didn't call their games lazy, I said they were boring, tired, and safe. There's a big difference between not putting in any effort and intentionally not trying. Ubisoft productions are most certainly the latter.

To the guy who has issues with my "feelings" for mad max: it doesn't have really anything to do with feelings. With Mad Max avalanche built a core gameplay mechanic and did a really fantastic job with it that (literally) drove the game, and then built the open world stuff around that. The open world stuff never felt like that much of a chore because the combat was fun, and the rewards were meaningful in the context of the game, which is the car itself. Did they kind of go overboard with how many areas you have to do? Yeah probably. Also Mad Max has a wonderful world design philosophy that's almost Zelda like in its design. You can use the map for stuff, but you can literally SEE everything from miles out. It really invigorates the gameplay as instead of playing the game as a GPS simulator the game feels like you're actually in a real place with real places to go to. Ubisoft games are the opposite of this. The game drowns you in pointless detail and the game refuses to direct you in any other direction other than literally having you follow a waypoint or turn on detective mode. It makes traversal feel pointless, and meaningless. Then everything you have to "do", about 90% of it is pointless fluff crap to the point it would make DK64 blush. I mean just look at that unity map. What the fuck even is that?

Their games simply have one glaring flaw beyond all flaws that Sucker Punch's Infamous series also shares: Mundane side activities.

Side activities are repetitive and have no significant context to them, and they form the brunt of the gameplay. You gotta make your game with passion like CDPR and have meaningful side quests that you love doing. Sidequests that give a story and satisfy you beyond just the actual task of doing them.

A lot of people compare Horizon and Far Cry but asides form the far superior gameplay Horizon seems to have, that is the key aspect that will likely elevate Horizon above it. Horizon's side quests seem to have meaning.

I agree 100%

People that don't even play their games claim to hate them because they make games they don't like. To them this a perfectly reasonable reason to hate something and shit on it every chance they get. To me it's just one of those irrational hate bandwagons that people jump on and never really know why. They just want to hate on something as a group activity.

Don't hate them, but it's sad that they don't care for me anymore with their online approach.

At least For Honor is very fun from what I played.

- Their games are not very good
- Their AAA games are way too samey
- They popularized the bland, paint-by-numbers AAA open-world game that's fucking everywhere (and is fucking terrible)
- They have a long history of bullshitting about their games (bullshots, fake MP video footage, downgrades, and even reverse bullshots)
- Releasing pathetically unfinished games like AC: Unity
- Ridiculously long credits (seriously, fuck off)
- Aisha Tyler
- uPlay
- Their games are really just not very good

.

- Their games are great
- Their open world approach, including towers, are fun
- The quality of their titles usually good/great
- Aisha Tyler is entertaining and glad they bring her back
- Their games are great

Lol

All of their Big AAA titles are generic open world fetch quests. I really enjoy their smaller projects like Child of Light.

Ubisoft is probably my favorite of the large-scale third party pubs. They are the only ones who consistently try new ideas (games like For Honor, Rayman, and Steep are legitimately risky propositions), try surprising things with their existing franchises (FC Primal, R6 Siege, the general tone of Watch Dogs 2) and their games are generally of a pretty high quality.

Do hey have a formula? I don't know if I'd call it that so much as I'd call it an "identity". You can usually tell a Ubisoft game when you see one, but it's a bit passe to say they all have the same open world structure, when that isn't always true (and especially when so many other games, from Mordor to The Witcher, also have a similar structure). It's like people just make the climbing tower joke ad naseum, while ignoring games like R6 Siege, Rayman, For Honor, Child of Light, Valiant Hearts, and so many others.

I dunno, Ubisoft excites me. I'm excited when Ubisoft announces a new game, because I don't always know what I'm getting. They aren't all 10/10 successes, but they generally give each of their games their all in a way that most publishers don't.

I have never, and will never understand the hate. I think they do great work, and "push the envelope, while still trying to make massive successful games" way better than EA, Activision, or most others do.

- Their games are not very good

For Honor is like Far Cry is Like The Division is like Steep is like Watch Dogs 2 is like R6 Siege?

Far Cry and Watch dogs are probably the most structurally similar games there, and even those are pretty fucking different.

I love Ubisoft...they have so many good/great franchises. I'm a huge fan of AC (I know it's a very flawed series, but I really love it). Rayman Legends is my all-time favorite 2D platformer. I love Prince of Persia, Trials, Beyond Good & Evil, Far Cry 3/4/Blood Dragon/Primal...I didn't like WD too much, but I'm currently playing Watch Dogs 2 and the difference is staggering...I'm loving it!

And I didn't even mention the smaller games, like Valiant Hearts and Child of Light.

They're my favorite publisher and I truly hope Vivendi disappears from the face of the Earth.

But of course this is the internet, so people blow everything out of proportion and since AC Unity and its bugs (I played through the game without a single problem on my PS4) it became cool to hate on Ubisoft.

It isn't hate for me, it's just that none of their games appeal to me anymore. I'm not part of the always-online/always-connected crowd and nor am I a fan of their cookie-cutter approach to open world games.

I don't like that we use the word "hate."

Ubisoft is a frustrating company because they're constantly on the cusp of greatness, but never quite there.

They seemed to be unable to keep up with the industry.
  • Assassin's Creed's Ezio games were great back when they came out, but the standards for an open world game have grown significantly since. And do they really need to hit so hard on the same formula, over and over and over?
  • Rainbow Six Siege was a great game, but if you're going to do a multiplayer title, you need an anti-cheat strategy included in your launch.
  • Anno 2205 was a letdown... Which is weird, because simulation games have been booming in the indie scene.
  • Far Cry Primal was just lazy.

Do you really mean Anno 2070 or Anno 2205(the new one)? I loved Anno 2070, who would have know that setting up elaborate trade routes and production chains would be so much fun.

They have the IP's but because they insist on going open world with just about every game they do (their open world formula sucks btw) they put out average games. Storytelling and visuals in their games took a huge hit as well.

I do love the fact that they're constantly pushing out new IPS and taking risks though.

Hate is a strong word lol. At most I'd say I used to consider Ubi my fav developer / publisher from 2006-2010... they're currently not in my top 5.

Ubisoft had some good times where they put out some really beloved games (Sands of Time, Chaos Theory, BG&E etc), but, Grow Home aside, that ended a long time ago.

My problem with Ubisoft's big games of recent years is I find them to be incredibly soulless, they feel almost cardboard, entirely disposable. When you break them down into pieces there isn't anything 'wrong' with them so to speak, but when taken as a whole they always feel like they've been designed in a boardroom by people pointing at pie charts and sales figures rather than by guys with actual passion.

Basically I find them boring, which is pretty much the worst thing a game can be. EA were the same a decade or so ago but they seemed to turn things around, so hopefully Ubisoft will one day do the same.

Gotta hand it to them for keeping with a unified thought line through multiple game series i guess. Must be hard to keep all those games sort of alike and sort of different at the same time.

They largely make paint by numbers, soulless games. They're the McDonald's of the video game industry. And sure lots of people like McDonald's and good for them, but it's not for me.

Some of my favorite games of all time are from Uni.

Sue they've gotten a little formulaic but that formula works well for me.

Great publisher A++++++ would buy a game from them again.

I don't hate them, but some of their decisions still taste like nasty.

Decisions for always online, making Rainbow Six contextually not Rainbow Six, Open World towers left and right, AssCreed milking, etc.

Last thing I really liked from them was surprisingly Far Cry 4. Almost forty hours of fun there.

I hate Ubisoft because I want to love them. They just have to stop making the same open world games over and over again. Games like Far Cry Primal are kinda amazing, but when it plays like every other Ubi game, it looses that amazingness and becomes just boring. I'd rather have played a 100% linear Far Cry game in that setting.

I actually like Ubisoft tho. They do dumb shit (so do all other big publishers but they also seem completely insane. Their E3 presentations are among the most interesting (I didn't say best here) and I love how stupid they get with their games (AC: Black Flag weird "real world" setting, hacking Ubisoft in Watch Dogs 2 to see a trailer plastered with CONFIDENTIAL watermarks, etc.)
Also I applaud them for making smaller games like Grow Home, Valiant Heart etc.

I SAID IT YVES, NOW GIVE ME BG&E2

I love Ubisoft open world games and those who use their formula. For this generation, I have played and completed the following -

AC Unity - 8/10
AC Syndicate - 8.5/10
Far Cry 4 - 9/10
Far Cry Primal - 9/10
The Division - 9/10
Mad Max - 9/10
Mafia III - 9/10
Watch Dogs - 8/10

Safe to say that I love Ubisoft's open world games and the other games that use the same formula. Works for me as I enjoy it and always have shit loads of fun.

The funny thing is that people bash Ubisoft and/or games like it but yet, plenty of other games do the same fucking shit...MGSV, Batman, Mordor, Fallout 4, The Witcher III, etc. and pretty much every open world game does the same shit. May appear differently but at the core, it's still the same shit. Gamers simply bash Ubisoft just for the hell of it yet give all those other games a free pass despite having the same exact problems or flaws. It's a fucking joke.

I think most of their games are shit.
I feel the same way. Watch Dogs, Assassin's Creed and Far Cry are terrible franchises imo. Far Cry 4 in particular was garbage. The games are just boring to play and feel uninspired. I'm now at the stage where I won't play any game with the Ubisoft logo on the box.

Hope things improve after Vivendi take over.

Can't stand them. Cheering on Vivendi every step of the way.

Out of curiosity: Why? You know Vivendi won't come in be like "Alright, stop doing what you are doing, we will now focus waaay more on quality" right?
In all likelihood they would cancel every game that's not a big franchise and produce 2 AC games a year. What do you think Vivendo will do there that would make you like them more?

I dislike their widespread usage of obvious bullshots. They use pics like these to try to convince the gaming public that their games are "one step ahead" of everyone else in the graphics department, when it's really just target renders passed off as in-game material.

(Also, they have zero idea what the word "iconic" means.)

They had a formula and they drove it into the ground. I am happy the recent AC games and Watch Dogs 2 seem to have been bombs as it might force some change.

They also ruined Trials.

It would also be nice if more then the same 2-3 people in GAF made threads for Ubisoft games.

For Honor might end up being my game of the year. There's a lot of good/great games coming out this year but after putting in a lot of time in the game I feel it has a strong possibility. That's also a risky project that a lot of AAA developers wouldn't take the chance on.

I haven't played Rainbow Six Siege yet but that game looks absolutely amazing and a lot of people say it's the best tactical shooter to come out in years.

I really have no interest in Watch Dogs and Far Cry doesn't interest me very much either. I'm excited to see if they make some meaningful improvements on Assassins Creed though.

How exactly is Far Cry 4 garbage?

Hard to say. I can't see Vivendi improving their situation, but it would sure shake things up. As for why I can't stand them, I don't like the way they treated Patrice Desilets and a friend of mine that once worked there. Also they find one thing that works and it bleeds into everything they do. I do appreciate them taking on risk with smaller projects though.

ubisoft open world meme doesn't apply anymore, Watch_Dogs 2 is legit good and while it might still be a GTA clone it has enough original ideas that feels like something entirely different when you play with focus on stealth and gadgets above vehicles and action. Mission design in this game is top notch. Fun game.

I've nothing against Ubisoft, they just put out a lot of stuff that isn't really for me. Looking at the list on wiki, I haven't actually bought anything of theirs since Assassin's Creed 2, and all I've played since then have been the public betas for The Division, Steep, and For Honor.

I'll probably get For Honor though. \m/

That's fair (though, the people who will most suffer from Vivendi's takeover will obviously not be the people responsible for Desilet's situation). I highly doubt Vivendi would shake them up tho. Vivendi would look at the one thing that works and mandate that they use it for the next 20 years in every single game. And they probably wouldn't allow any of the smaller games. That's not what Vivendi does. They come in, bleed a company dry and throw it away.

I don't think it can ever top the person who was blaming Ubisoft for causing the death of that snowboarder while doing the promo video for steep. They were killed by an avalanche. Then they said they were monsters or something for not cancelling the game

I played it and thought it was awful. What else is there to explain? It's not as if I'm the only person who feels this way.

Well...everything?

It has great graphics, great voice acting, decent story, tight gameplay, great soundtrack. You might not like or find it fun, but there's no way it can objectively be called "garbage".

I thought Black Flag was a lot of fun, though I couldn't finish it maybe 75% into the game since it was repetitive. Still, the ride was fun!

Zombi was great. It was rough around the edges, but man, so much fun.

I did like Valiant Hearts.

I like them and don't mind their open world formula, especially since they scaled it back from the AC Unity mess (all that app crap). I figure the "formula" lets them produce games faster...and thats okay with me

I'm so over their cookie cutter open world games. I have no interest in yet another Assassin's Creed, no interest in Watch Dogs, no interest in Steep, no interest in The Division, no interest in yet another Far Cry, and certainly no interest in the total mess that Ghost Recon seems to be from my brief encounter with its beta.

Yet, my current most played game is Rainbow Six Siege, which I adore, and, having played the alpha and the beta, I cannot wait for For Honor. South Park too, has long been preordered.

I don't hate them at all, but Hell if they don't need to re-evaluate their open world game design.

Great for a Ubisoft game does not equal great, but anyway:

- The story is woeful
- Troy Baker's VA is bad
- The protagonist is not likeable, nor are any of the supporting characters
- Soundtrack was forgettable (I HAVE LITERALLY FORGOTTEN IT)
- Gameplay was copypaste Ubisoft dogshit
- Graphically, it wasn't amazing. Standard PS4 fare if we're being honest

I didn't find it fun. At all. That's why I think it's garbage. Always will.
