Ubisoft: Steep above expectations, Watch Dogs 2 below, R6/Division doing well

You don't feel Assassin's Creed 1 was marketed as the first true next-gen game?

To be honest I don't really remember that long ago, plus I've never been interested in AC.

But IIRC Watch Dogs sold a ton more than AC1 did, I tried to find AC1 sales but couldn't so I could be wrong about that in that case just ignore me. So even if it was marketed as the next big thing, I don't think the average consumer took it as that.

When Assassin's Creed came out it was the fastest selling new IP of all time and did about 6.4 million copies in its first few months, and then ended up over 9 million copies in the end.

The record was not broken until this generation with Watch Dogs (and then Destiny and then The Division).

Assassin's Creed 2 started slightly slower in its debut month, but very quickly surpassed it in its second month. Watch Dogs 2 never had that kind of an upswing, even if it had legs, suggesting to me the problem was that the product didn't deliver an experience consumers really wanted in the way Assassin's Creed 2 did.

Interesting about WD2. I wonder how this will impact WD3. I just finished WD2 last week and I enjoyed it. Writing was a tad off at times, but I liked the chemistry with the DedSec crew, and the missions were fun for the most part.

I wonder if Ubi will adjust WD3, if it happens of course, as a more open co-op game to fit their new games as service initiative. Could imagine seeing a simple co-op heist/hack set-up for WD3 bolstered by the PVP invasion element fleshed out even more. Would be a bit of a shame if that happens since I'm not totally into those sort of games.

Watch_Dogs 1 was a right place at the right time thing, the sequel had little chance of recapturing the same success.

Nnnneh. WD1's success arose from some amazing PR and marketing. The announcement and follow-ups were huge.

It burned a lot of people when it launched, and i think that damaged WD2 more than anything. They could never recapture WD1's marketing momentum and energy.

The shooting in watch dogs 2 was a step down for me

I still haven't finished that game

Yeah id recommend not shooting. Start using your hacker tools and exploring instead and you'll have a way better time. You can beat the whole game like that. Everything else in the game is awesome.

Use shooting as a last resort or in multiplayer.

So an update on the interesting things that were said on the conference call, all courtesy of ZhugeEX on Twitter

- 5 million active players for The Division
- Far Cry Primal, Unity / Syndicate did well for them. Proof that not all games have to be service based to be successful
- Assassins Creed movie led to a big boost in back catalog AC game sales. Up over 110% this quarter
- For Honor has a pipeline of 12 months worth of content / support already in the works
- Wildlands will have an open Beta soon
- Ghost Recon Wildlands Closed Beta was bigger than they anticipated due to users inviting friends at a large rate
- Watch Dogs 2 is outpacing Syndicate's performance. Seems to be similar to Far Cry 4's sales
- Launching 4 AAA game's next fiscal year. Appeared to be 5 at one point so it looks like something was delayed
- Ubi will focus less on new IP and instead focus on turning their existing properties into long term service based titles

Ahh I assumed it was around 6M LTD, maybe I got mixed up with the months numbers somewhere.

Regardless I think you're correct in that it's the style that put people off mainly. I know it's a popular complaint on Neogaf, Reddit, etc. I was actually looking forward to until I actually saw the turn the game took, now I'm not even sure if I'll ever play it. It went the complete opposite direction I expected them to (maybe I had my expectations too high expecting POI: The game :()

Uni is killing it right now. They're putting out terrific games and seeing lots of success in the market. All the Vivendi stuff is a legitimate shame in the context of how they're doing right now. Surprised Primal did that well considering its crippling mediocrity. Wildlands beta cratered my interest in the game.

Ubi has been dominating my living room lately, but I didn't expect to hear 5 million active players for The Division. Nice!

Guess this means that if we get a WD3 we'll go back to grim angsty white guy revenge story in ugly city with more of a focus on shoot the guys and less on hacking from a van across the road.

WD2 was great and such a surprise after the disappointing and forgettable WD1.

It was down to Watch Dogs 2 and DOOM for my game of the year. WD2 definitely deserves a chance if you are into open world games.

It's not just a little above as well:

Damn impressive. Slowly but surely R6S has solidified it's place on the Top10 most popular X1 games. Well deserved, especially if you have a group of friends to play with.

Having played WD2 for several hours I'm not surprised to see it performing below expectations. It's just a bad game, worse than WD1 even in my opinion. All missions are the same and there's exactly nothing in the game which in any way or form ties it to hackers.

But this is exactly what WD2 is to WD1.

Ok lets guess the 4 games

South Park?
AC Egypt

Now the other two
Rabbids x Mario
Splinter Cell

We will see

Watch Dogs is dead as a franchise.

I wouldn't say that. It looks to be selling about as well as Far Cry 4 from what they've said. It just wasn't as big at launch as they were hoping. They also noted its showing good legs. I'm sure it was still disappointing to them though no doubt, as it missed expectations.

I think we'll get a WD3. Might be a while until we see it, but it sounds like they don't plan on leaving the franchise

Good to hear the Division is doing well, hope for a sequel someday. I just started playing it last week and like it a lot. Even bought the season pass today during the Ubisoft PSN sale. Only the forth season pass I've bought behind Battlefield 4, 1, and The Witcher.

Yeah, everything was easier when the measurement for failure or success was in units sold.

It's all just different metrics trying to answer the same question, how good is our game doing? I could see MAU and DAU measurements being pretty useful for predicting sequel success but it's definitely measurement geared towards long-term engagement and service.

Ubisoft, if Rainbow Six is doing well, you know what that means.

GIVE US VEGAS III, YOU FUCKERS.

I'd love a single player campaign. They should keep it first person like siege though. Or do both.

What about it? The terrible 3rd person cover system? The regenerating health? Unlimited pistol ammo? Vegas can stay in the trash bin where it belongs with Lockdown.

Also, I love how these multiplayer GaaS games are doing, especially Siege. It deserves every bit of the success it has earned.

man, no offense but y'all thirty-somethings must genuinely think you're the only people playing video games today if you really believe that
Don't know about others but I'm in my early 20s, not 30s.

So yeah.. it's not just older people that think it's too hipster.

Watch Dogs 2 is inferior to the first game, so it feels somewhat fitting that the game hasn't performed to expectations.
I've heard this from fans of the first. The first one I enjoyed and beat so I'm kinda gonna jump in to WD2 cautiously when I do.

I loved WD1. Platinium'd it on PS4. WD2 is good but not better than WD1. The city is way better but gameplay mechanics are not as good as WD1.

I loved the hell out of WD1, played through it so many times. WD2, overall, is a much better game. The only "downgrade" I'll acknowledge is that combat doesn't feel quite as good... which isn't that big of a deal in the final analysis, because there is far less emphasis on combat. They give you so many new tools in the toybox to deal with enemies with. So many improvements across the board. There are always a few naysayers in every crowd.

Happy to see r6s is doing well but rather than updating the game i want a siege 2 with a better code.

I agree I'd rather see an overhaul with dynamic lighting, more sophisticated physics, fire, water etc.

But first just want Ubi to sort their servers. It's unfathomable that a company releases so many online-only PvP titles yet has such shoddy servers. It's hurting the growth of their playerbase and infuriating for existing users. Their servers are not fit for purpose. (Edit: PS4 servers)
