Some skinheads in Manchester called me a paki and a muzzy when I was walking home once. I'm a white guy from Kent with a beard and black hair.
It really is just a word for the pig-ignorant to refer to anything they decide is different or other. Anyone using 'paki', 'chink' or whatever else is an idiot at best.

Well, UKIP want to get rid of political correctness, so they'd be ok with them doing what you said. Also, they'd allow them to carry guns.

I hate UKIP. I hate the fact that more people seem to be supporting them even more. They see their anti-immigration stance and instantly jump to their side. I guess nothing else matters.

Broken Joystick

At least you can talk. Who are you?
considering most british people can't even tell the difference between different ethnicities, this is not true. Especially for people that would actually use this term. Paki shop is referring to a shop with brown people in it.

I've been called paki enough times in school to know. (and i'm not pakistani).

That's true, no offence intended. (I forget sometimes because the one I used to live near was actually run by Pakistanis.)

Lived in London & Essex my whole life and only ever heard "chinky" used in an offensive context.

Really?

I've heard it regularly for the entirety of my near 30 years here simply as a shortening for a Chinese takeaway. I don't think I've heard it that frequently in a "this chink on the bus" way though.

Don't think I've ever heard anything other than Indian/Curry/Ruby for an Indian takeaway.

Paki on the other had was far more common as a slur, though it's fallen out a fair bit compared to when I was younger.

Ukip however, are shits.

People aren't ignorant of the racism. It's why they want to vote for them. If you vote for them, you're racist. It's that simple.

No, it's really not that simple and making bullshit absolutist statements like this are only going to proliferate the ignorance that you are seemingly so against.

Oh, so it must just be that people really want to smoke in pubs, carry guns, ban political correctness, allow workplace discrimination, and unregulate paid holidays, sick pay and maternity leave then. I mean, if it was about Europe, surely you could vote either Tory or Green both of whom promise a referendum and have never had (well, not recently had with the case of the Tories) the above policies?

Is a slang or racial slur for Chinese really that important in determining where my vote goes? Not really.

Interesting that you choose to only focus on the Chinese slur rather than everything else that's listed in the OP.

Doesn't that paint a very specific picture of the party, one that isn't out of place next to the likes of the BNP, or are you going to argue it's just a few bad apples and you're voting for the 'good ones'?

It makes me sad that these people claim they want what's best for the country I live in but are biggoted racists and the fact there's a lot more people in this country who actually support the shit they spout.

It makes me ashamed to even want to admit I'm British anymore. I just want to distance myself as far away from these people who claim they're proud to be British as possible. I know there's been parties just as bad such as the BNP and National Front before, but these people are actually getting publicity and somehow managed to get voted in as representatives in the EU. I feel sick :/

I expect they'll eventually go the way of the BNP. Once people realise they are mostly impotent when they get elected to local government and can't deliver on the promises of change, people will eventually become disillusioned.

As for the protest vote, I really wish more people would look towards the Green Party.

I'd have voted for Green now that the Liberals are (essentially) no more. Problem is, with the rise of UKIP, I pretty much have to vote Labour just to cancel out some racists' vote. Democracy is deeply flawed.

Yeah, unfortunately that's the main problem when it comes to voting for who you want. You sometimes have to take others poor and often ill informed choices into account to make sure their madness doesn't impact you and those around you too negatively.

Still, it's good to see another party like them starting to grow, while they are still lagging behind the likes of UKIP in terms of voter base, funding, etc, they are slowly starting to catch up.

Hopefully they continue to grow and gain more mainstream attention as a viable and sensible party to protest vote for or just vote for in general.

I'd love to see a system where you have to answer a number of multiple choice questions on the policies of the party you're voting for, with your vote counting for more if you get more right. Unworkable unfortunately, but would be nice.

Wouldn't motions really struggle to get passed with proportional representation though? Especially with the two main parties standing at 32% each in the approval ratings.

Coalition would be expected and negotiations could be done before elections to some degree, unlike the last backroom deal hashed out by a few.

FPTP needs to go, I could vote for a real left party who would need to compromise but there would actually be some socialists in parliament.

Unfortunately, this won't happen. It seems very unfashionable to actually give a shit about people these days. Maybe Proportional Representation gets a few of them in...but they'll just get outvoted anyway.

No, no, you're quite right, all 4,376,635 people that voted UKIP at the 2014 European elections are all undoubtedly racists. How ignorant to think otherwise, I mean, it's just so simple.

On Europe, proposing a referendum isn't the same as promising an outright withdrawal.

Ah, yes, the Greens. The party that doesn't want to send females to prison because they're females.

CJ382: For the vast majority of women in the criminal justice system, solutions in the community are more appropriate. Community sentences must be designed to take account of women’s particular vulnerabilities and domestic and childcare commitments. The restrictions placed on sentencers around breaches of community orders must be made more flexible.

Why would such a progressive and equality focused party argue for a greater entrenchment of gender roles and the unequal treatment of men and women under law?

Also the party that wants a massive cut on all defence spending because if a threat emerged, we could just rebuild the armed forces before they got here.

PD302: On inspection, there is little or no threat of direct invasion of the UK by any nation. Commitment to a large standing army, a navy of large warships around our coastline, squadrons of fighter planes and a cripplingly expensive missile defence system is therefore unnecessary. Any threat of invasion that might arise in the future is so remote that realignment of the UK military and defence preparations would be possible long before any invasion occurred.

A party concerned with overpopulation...

PP103: There is a need to explicitly consider population since, if it is ignored indefinitely, the risk of over-consumption of natural resources will increase, leading to conflict and ultimately a reduction in carrying capacity.

PP104: There are many causes of population growth and some of these must be addressed to avoid overpopulation. Causes may be as basic as a lack of family planning information and contraceptives. Inequality and lack of opportunities can result in people having more children than they would otherwise want. On a wider scale, it has been observed that populations often increase following wars, social strife and environmental disasters.

...but wants to progressively remove all forms of border control. I didn't realise immigration didn't cause population growth.

MG300: We will work to achieve greater equity between the UK and non-Western countries. In step with this, we will progressively reduce UK immigration controls.

and not take either the resources or skills of those wanting to emigrate into the UK into account.

MG205: Migration policies should not discriminate directly on grounds of race, colour, religion, political belief, disability, sex or sexual orientation. Preference should not be given to those with resources or desirable skills.

And this without highlighting their entire anti science stance, including moronic views on nuclear power, GM foods, transport infrastructure.

Viable and sensible aren't really words I'd use to describe them. And from a cursory glance, Caroline Lucas's voting record has been:

Voted moderately against laws to promote equality and human rights.

Voted moderately against higher taxes on plane tickets.

Voted strongly against raising the threshold at which people start to pay income tax.

Voted strongly against measures to reduce tax avoidance.

Not to say they don't have some good policies, of course. I can only hope any popularity gain comes hand in hand with a reduction on some of their more batshit insane aspects.

Chinky is fairly common. Most people who use it aren't raving racists, it's just shorthand for the chinese takeaway. Paki shop used to be very common but nobody uses that anymore. Now it's just the corner shop.

I do agree that most people who use it aren't trying to be offensive in the same way as calling a black person the N word clearly has malice intentions, but the fact is these are offensive word and the onus is on us to tell people who use these words so casually to use a different word.
Same thing goes for using "gay" as a negative. My skin crawls when I hear a little kid say something they don't like is gay. The kid isn't a homophobe, it's just a word he's using because that's what he's been exposed to. We who know better should be making the effort to teach him otherwise. We might get told to piss off (or knifed), but the alternative is pretty grim.

The best one was a guy on the bus calling my ex girlfriend a chink. When I explained it's meaning to her she was like "But I'm Thai, should I inform him?". Bless her.
Though she comes from a country where every Westerner is a "Farang"...which i find pretty offensive.

Jesus happy to wear trainers made in a sweat shop though.

Part of it is people feeling sorry for them. To the average person, it seems Farage is being bullied. I'm no fan of the guy, but last week on HIGNFY they had this whole thing about him being against breast feeding in public and then ripped the shit out of him for being in favour of page 3...even though he's never even said this. They were literally making shit up Fox news style and claiming it was his opinion.
Reginald D Hunter was so pissed off at them for this, he pretty much told them to shut the fuck up.

It's really not. I've lived here for most of my life and have never heard such a shitty term used for Chinese food. :/

where do you live, that you've never ever heard it used?
I'm in Edinburgh btw.

I've never heard chinky... It doesn't even make sense. At least Paki could sort of be defended as just a shortening of Pakistani.

I hate the fella and ukip but hes not wrong on this one, i live in the north east and its used alot, i used it as a young kid without knowing it was offensive. Sometime people dont like it when people shine a light on them but this kind of lingo is used up and down the country.

I live in northwest, heard no one use this or the word Chink to refer to a Chinese. In my time here in UK the only time I heard it was in a video game I think. It's used a lot in India and that was the only place where I saw people commonly use this in a derogatory sense towards North-East Indians who look asian.

To be fair chinky and stuff like "paki shop" is said by people of a certain generation in less cosmopolitan parts of the country quite often and usually without malice.

But that says nothing of the myriad other slip ups and gaffs the party is prone to.

Yeah it is. They're racial slurs and not really acceptable now, but you're right, it was very common place by a certain generation, and not necessarily said with malice.

That said, as a politician he should be more aware.

Well, I'm not sure it is just anti-immigration, I think a number of people are just fed up with the main political parties.

Nigel Farage acting like a cunt as usual. Yet the racist idiots in this country will claim he's just saying what we're all thinking!

It's common sense!

So the UKIP is like the British equivalent of the US' tea party conservatives?

Not quite that bad, but that kind of thing, yeah.

I've never heard chinky... It doesn't even make sense. At least Paki could sort of be defended as just a shortening of Pakistani.

Paki was used against anyone from Pakistan, India or Bangladesh though, so it was very ignorant. Especially considering that those countries don't exactly love each other.

What a fucking detestable party. So embarrassing for this country that these guys are polling in third place right now.

As opposed to the thousand of girls that are being passed around rape gangs in the north, to the full awareness of the establishment? Or molesting vulnerable women and attempting to keep it hushed up.

How about actually murdering kids which is finally now coming to light.

You have to be a mental-man to not feel sick to your stomach at our politics.

I haven't heard anyone say chinky in ages. It used to be the done thing, maybe ten years ago. It was definitely extremely common. "Just going to the chinky". Nowadays even people I consider to be neds don't even say it. People have moved on from casual racism for the most part, it is embarrassing that he hasn't.
