Ukrainian Conflict - Donetsk Boogaloo

In an ideal world, this would be a perfect opportunity to make Russia an example of what happens if you violate foreign land. But in reality it will only show that if you're big enough, you get a free pass to do shit you want.

I guess the world will never learn you can't allow countries to pull shit like this. I guess WWII was too long ago already.

They have nukes. Simple as that.

So when is Mexico gonna annex the South-West US to save their kin from the menace of Sherrif Joe and the Tea Party?

You joke now but when the Mexican demographic of the US becomes even larger you never know what could happen in the decades ahead. But as above, nukes rule the roost.

WTF Russia

"@AP: BREAKING: Ukraine: Russians issue ultimatum for surrender of 2 Ukrainian warships in Crimea."

So, Russia is going to "protect" Ukrainians by killing them.

Got it.

lol at Merkals comment to Obama about Putin.

“She was not sure he was in touch with reality, people briefed on the call said. ‘In another world,’ she said,” the New York Times reported.

You know you done goofed when World leaders call you mad.
So one of the most powerfull men on earth maybe lost his touch to reality? That's.....not good

The baltic states must be scared as hell having such a large amount of Soviet-imported Russians right now. They can count themselves lucky they're NATO-memebers.

Because Angela Merkel says so? Putin has always shown that his thinking is razor sharp.

Well I was joking due to him controlling a shit load of nukes.

But the sort of power he hold has corrupted and deluded plenty of people. I can very easily see him thinking he's Napoleon.

Does not look good.

I seriously cannot imagine that Russia is going for it. But on the other hand I doubt they will leave Crimea after going there in the first place.

If you're Ukrainan it's probably the safest idea not to mess with them. On the other hand it would show the world that Russia can get anything they want unless the West strikes back. If they get Crimea they could get the rest of the Ukraine as well. Who would dare to stop them? Who would dare to prevent this?

Okay, maybe i'm exaggerating right now. I just don't know. Giving away land to the opponent is really not a good way to show power. But what can they do? Except a few calls the world is doing nothing. And do you really think some calls could stop Putin?

like being part of NATO means shit, unless one of the "big" countries is touched, nobody is going to risk their own health to save a little country.

Russia have just requested an emergency UNSC meeting, starting in 4 hours.

Response to the initial actions by the West were predictable, reactions to todays events, should Russia initiate armed conflict against a sovereign state will be interesting.

So is NATO going to do anything or will the two ships kindly give in and allow for the client state of the Republic of Crimea?

Nah, most people who come here do well at assimilating. Plus it's not like most were trapped here after 1848 or they're getting kidnapped by business owners.

Is this on the level of the Cuban middle crisis or more like Georgia ? Where Russia put on a show to remind them and the world to that are not to be fucked with?

He'll be fucked like napoleon and hitler once he invades rus...ah shit.

Someone call Schröder, maybe he can talk some sense into Putin. Guys were best buddies.

"lupenreiner demokrat"

flawless democrat is what Schörder called him back then lol.

This is crazy, by the time I get up tomorrow there could be war in Europe.

I'm pretty sure that article 5, that basically says "An attack on one is an attack on all", is one of the most basic foundations of the NATO. If they ignore that then they might as well close the club.

To save face Putin can get UN peace keepers in, please take that route, then let Russia keep the naval bases etc

Ukraine also has an agreement with USA/UK/Russia to protect Ukraine. That means very little in the real world apparently!

A higher than Georgia, because it's near "Important Countries" but no way is it near the closest the world has ever gotten to nuclear war.

Meanwhile, the Russian Central Bank spent $10 billion of its foreign currency reserves on Russian roubles so far today, as well as jumping up the interest rate 1.5 points, as foreign investors continue to flee Russian markets. This is not a sustainable course for the Russian economy.

That particular agreement is worthless. It basically reads "In case of war, address the UNSC". Of which Russia is a member. With veto powers.

NATO's Article 5 OTOH is the real deal.

I don't think the Russians are going to storm into Ukraine by this evening. More likely, they're trying to scare the Ukrainian military into surrendering by leaking false information. Enough soldiers defect (the head of the Ukrainian Navy already did) and this thing is over without a shot being fired. All it takes is a base, the two...and this looks increasingly hopeless for the holdouts. Who probably aren't suicidal, as much as they want to protect their homeland.

Meanwhile, Poland has admitted it has begun moving tanks and troops to take up position along its borders with Ukraine - but insists it is part of a ‘previously scheduled exercise’.

Not sure why the excuse of exercise?

Is the rouble gold backed?

There are treatise in place to protect Ukraine, particularly for them disarming themselves of nukes. It pretty much goes against our foreign policy for the past few decades if we DON'T do something. It'll also set a precedent for other territory disputes in other regions, basically saying go ahead and take the land. So probably more like the former than latter.
