Uncharted 3 MP Beta Thread: Cinematic Murder Testing

Powerplays are absolutely awful in their present state. 10 kill difference should be the trigger, and they should last for 30 seconds. Or keep their present state, but they should end immediately once every member of the winning team is killed once.

Someone mentioned earlier that everyone should see themselves as the heroes and the enemies as the villains. I can't quite see why this wouldn't work - the only things that really depend on team are the cutscenes at the beginning/end, and it's trivial to load different ones depending on the player's viewpoint.

Then again I'm sure when the game is actually out, the villains will be much more recognisable characters from the single-player and you'll be able to select Lasarevic, Navarro, etc.

i may have been the one to mention it, but no one replied so i continued bitching :P

i think the cutscenes are all in-game at the beginning and end of the matches, so they wouldn't even have to load different scenes for every player, it's just a matter of swapping in the appropriate character models.

and while i do enjoy the asymmetrical maps like the beginning of airstrip when the villains are trying to board the plane, there's no real reason the heroes shouldn't be able to try to board the plane, even if it's not faithfully recreating a scene from single player (neither is 20 Drakes running around :lol).

as for the recognizable villains, i guess it's better than nothing, but i still didn't wanna play as those guys in the Uncharted 2 multiplayer. call me old fashioned, but i like being the hero and shooting the bad guy. anything naughty dog can do to help that fantasy in multiplayer is much appreciated, especially after i've seen it done in Peace Walker.

I think they are a smart idea for keeping the match close, but they need some significant tweaks. They last too long and happen too often. They should be a crutch for teams losing by a fair margin, not for those that still have a legitimate chance for a comeback.

But you see, calling 'Snipe 3' does not tell your team EXACTLY where he is and where he's moving in 3D space. There's a massive difference in showing where someone is on a map, and showing where they are on your HUD. And besides, your problem seems to be the map design. Trying to cover that problem with another problem isn't a good idea. Two wrongs don't make a right and all that.

In the "snipe 3" example, the actual snipe 3 space in Halo 2's Lockout is very small and the immediate routes from snipe 3 to another area of the map are short and linear, so you could just make an easy predictive callout as to where he's heading. Same with other areas of the map, and the vast majority of other Halo 2 maps. Of course, this is all rendered completely pointness when your team doesn't have mics.

As for UC3's map design, it's incredibly intricate and complicated, not that there's anything wrong with that. Though I would be highly impressed if someone came up with a clear set of callouts. I still don't think a 1-3 second callout is imbalanced given the plethora of escape routs you have at any given time. Remember, the callout goes away if the opponent breaks the sight line.

It's true it did have that, but that's not what I was referring to. Everyone had an ability where they could look at an enemy and press the D-Pad to send a message to the rest of the team saying something like "3 enemies, Ramp side low" It was quick and succinct without going too far.

I know. But the d-pad callout was more vague because Shadowrun's maps weren't very complicated. Teleport made them complicated, but the geometry itself was relatively simple. A thousand times more simple than UC3's. Saying "1 enemy, sky bridge" or "2 enemies, the cuts" was enough information given the geometry of those areas. More information in UC3 isn't out of the question given the complexity of the maps imo.

I like the game overall but wold like the following improvements:

i)aiming and camera speed is too slow. There should be more controller tweaks available for players to change this. See killzone 3 for how it should be done.

ii) movement and traversal needs to be sped up, at this point, it just feels sluggish. I am not sure if this was intended, but controller latency feels too high.

iii) melee feels terrible. Pressing a melee stops you in your tracks. it just does not feel rewarding to use melee, and almost every other online multiplayer has a more satisfying implementation of melee. This needs to be improved, as I feel it is one of the weakest aspects of the game.

iv) bullet spread feels way too high when starting out.

v) the cargo plane stage is just way too unfair and unbalanced.

vi) you should start out with more customization options available as default. Every character looks the same, because there is nothing to customize initially.

vii) paid boosters are an abomination

viii) powerplays should be limited to twice per match.

ix) where the fuck is the Move support. Socom has it, it is amazing, USE IT.

x) there are way too many things that makes a strong player even stronger. Kickbacks, paid boosters, weapon mods etc benefit skilled players way more than average, or below average players because good players get them faster and more frequently. WTF is up with that.

xi) matchmaking takes way too long. Also, why does it try to find new players everytime a match ends instead of going straight to voting for the next stage?

xii) also, I can't count the number of times I got killed even though I moved out of the line of fire and was taking cover behind a wall. I don't think this is supposed to happen.

I know the game is not finished, but dear god, ND has a long way to go if they really want to make this the PS3's go to multiplayer game. They will be pulverized by BF3 and COD at the end of the year if the current state is anything to go by.

One annoying thing is a bug where I have both weapon upgrades for a weapon purchased, but I still get the big ! next to it like there's something new. It's on the pistol in co-op.

Agreed on all points.

Though I don't think its a case of response time, just slower movement animation. The actual response time seems perfectly responsive

So I just got to play a few hours of UC3 and wow what a difference a day makes. All of my games were smooth sailing. None of that slide show crap and in-game freezing.

The only mode I've tried is TDM on Airstrip(damn the randoms who don't want to play chateau) and I'm loving it. It's so fun to run around and actually get in a gun battle and not worry about dying after a few shots.
Also, I have to reiterate that the buddy system is just awesome.

The only issue I've come across was when I quit the beta, it restarted my PS3.

I dunno...U2 MP in any form is still some of the best damn MP i've played this gen.

Yeah, I hate that ! that doesn't want to go away as well. My OCD gets to me when I see it.

Kind of wishing that airstrip takeoff was somehow just a whole map by itself. I'm liking some of the kickbacks, boosters, and Overtime as well. But Power Plays can just be downright frustrating sometimes. And I'll say it again, 3 Team Deathmatch is soooo good.

Hardcore mode?
Why is it called hardcore mode? That's such a devisive term for what is essentially the core game without the gimmicks

Hardcore mode should be the default and the other stuff like kickbacks and powerplays should be relegated to their own mode

Arne, I suggest you leave this thread before you guys start trying to appease people who have no fucking clue about what they want. You know why launch U2 MP was so great? It's because you didn't have any stupid ass suggestions to listen to. You know why 1.05 sucked? You listened to those suggestions.

__

Cursed was the only powerplay worth a damn. Every other one just gives shit tons of free kills to the winning team. Cursed actually forced you to take your time and analyze the situation at hand. You know, it tested how skillful the winning team really was by making them observe their surroundings to know where his team was located compared to the enemy team.

___

If I weren't so busy with other GAF stuff atm, my cluster bomb of rage would be tremendous. This is closest thing we've had to launch U2 since early 2010 or thereabouts.

I think ND should work on making the cinematic scene transition into the actual map better

Right now its really jarring racing along the strip then suddenly you're in a multiplayer arena

For example the plane could take off just over the top of the airfield map and then the trucks could drive in there, without cutting to a cutscene

Yep

Ehhh, maybe a slight boost, but I'm ok with how it is now

iii) melee feels terrible. Pressing a melee stops you in your tracks. it just does not feel rewarding to use melee, and almost every other online multiplayer has a more satisfying implementation of melee. This needs to be improved, as I feel it is one of the weakest aspects of the game.

Agreed, melee in this game is terrible, and is terrible in U2. No idea how they can change it.

iv) bullet spread feels way too high when starting out.

Ehh, maybe decrease the spread a LITTLE, but I am fine with how it is now, even without the boosters.

v) the cargo plane stage is just way too unfair and unbalanced.

Yeah. Needs more entrances to the plane, or something. Heroes have the advantage from the get go. Maybe increase the amount of trucks, and have both teams spawn on the trucks, away from each other?

vi) you should start out with more customization options available as default. Every character looks the same, because there is nothing to customize initially.

Probably just a beta limitation.

vii) paid boosters are an abomination

Don't really agree. What are people who have maxed out their character going to spend the 5 million in cash that they have? Needs to be able to be spent somehow.

viii) powerplays should be limited to twice per match.

Hmmm. Not sure about this one. I say, if the opposing team is 7-10 points behind, it activates. Gives the winning team a buffer, but still allows the losing team an ability to catch up.

ix) where the fuck is the Move support. Socom has it, it is amazing, USE IT.

Mehh, whatever.

x) there are way too many things that makes a strong player even stronger. Kickbacks, paid boosters, weapon mods etc benefit skilled players way more than average, or below average players because good players get them faster and more frequently. WTF is up with that.

So whats the solution here? Get rid of it? I have no problem. A couple matches in hardcore will get you the xp you need.

xi) matchmaking takes way too long. Also, why does it try to find new players everytime a match ends instead of going straight to voting for the next stage?

Agreed. Though I don't think it drops everyone. Played in 2v2v2, and after the match, it said "found player", and stayed like that for a good 30 seconds. Then it showed the players, and it was everyone from before. The fuck was taking so long? U3 definitely has one of the longest matchmaking processes I have ever seen. No doubt about that.

xii) also, I can't count the number of times I got killed even though I moved out of the line of fire and was taking cover behind a wall. I don't think this is supposed to happen.

Yeah. Sometimes it feels like the bullets went around the cover. Probably the netcode? Or the hitboxes?

I know the game is not finished, but dear god, ND has a long way to go if they really want to make this the PS3's go to multiplayer game. They will be pulverized by BF3 and COD at the end of the year if the current state is anything to go by.

My take.

Spent more time tonight ith it after the patch and the difference is night and day. Smooth playing, even though finding other players still takes a bit of time.

I absolutely love the 2v2v2 mode. Perfect alternative to random hopping with another friend hoping you won't get crappy teams. Still getting used to aiming, but other than that I'm not having too much trouble adapting.

So... does gaf hate UC3b?

I don't see how anyone can. It succeeds on practically every level. Great map design, strong system/community features, and probably the first genuine cinematic competitive multiplayer experience, that doesn't distract from the competition.

i played this for about 2 hours then got stuck in lobby for about 15mins and decided to quit, the match making is extremely slow.

i really hate the camera in this game. moving around makes me feel like i lose control of my character. everything about the game just seems loose and delayed. if this is the same multiplayer that gttv played i really have no clue how it won.

I think the game plays fine but I agree that paid boosters are a travesty. Higher ranked players get a huge advantage because they actually have the money to spend on them.

I can see why they slowed down aiming, camera speed, movement and traversal in multiplayer but i hope in SP everything is faster and more responsive (like U2)

How is this any different from all other games that use leveling up for unlocks?

imo, as long as matchmaking is functional, you shouldn't have to worry about this.

Wow, just noticed my account finally got accepted after nearly a year of waiting. Good surprise to come home to after work.

Played for a few matches last night. The first game was butter smooth, 2nd game had mega framerate issues (or was it lag). But from the times it was smooth I can tell it was something I'll enjoy. Kudos ND.

Plus there are weapon mods which could give a bigger advantage to higher players. It just seems like they went with the carrot and stick gameplay to keep people playing the multiplayer. People will see the higher level players with the cool stuff and think "I'll grind my levels and get better stuff so I can kill people easier!" The thing I liked about U2 multiplayer was that it was just simple and had none of this extra fluff added on.

The beta is awesome. I love kickbacks, hate power-plays. Hardcore mode is great to jump into when you're sick of the other team constantly getting double-damage.

Leveled up to 23, and only lost one match in Hardcore mode or TDM. It's awesome to have the old UC2 GAF crew back together and beasting out.

imo, as long as matchmaking is functional, you shouldn't have to worry about this.

Gears 3 has leveling that only unlocks stuff like weapon and character skins. Once you throw in gun modifications and such into the mix things get messy. UC2 wasn't that bad with this, but 3 has a much steeper slope to go up against a higher level team.

As much as I thought I'd be really bad, I've been doing quite well. I win free for all or come quite close all the time playing against random people, and I'm almost always on the top of my team in team deathmatch.

That being said, when I go against people that are really good, or are higher level, I usually suck. I wonder how I'd do against some of you. Probably terribly.

I am enjoying the beta, but as some people have also mentioned the movement and climbing speed feels too slow, and stopping dead when you melee isn't fun.

I like it more than the Gears 3 beta!!!

I can't figure out how to unlock the retail rewards though, still haven't found the avatar. Or does that stuff unlock on the actual retail copy and you keep the save data?

Priceless.
What's wrong with Skype? Sure, it's not integrated on PS3, but I think it's a pretty elegant solution nonetheless.

For the love of sweet jesus-fuck-shit do whatever you have to do to get the goddamn movement speed/responsiveness EXACTLY how it was in U2!

I feel like a goddamn turtle covered in molasses "running" on fly paper. I took me 30 fucking seconds to get Sully to climb up to a ledge because his dumbass kept jumping in completely different directions to what I was pressing, or he was too busy stumbling his old ass around because of the animations.

Get rid of the shit "sprint" that should be renamed to what it actually is: "Jogging-just-slightly-faster-than-U2's-base-movement-speed-while-being-limited-to-a-5-degree-turning-angle."

Fix the fucking aiming; slow, sluggish, unresponsive, mayonnaise -- whatever you call it: fucking thing sucks.

Not loving the power plays nor the sprint mechanics. I did, however, like the random treasure drops. Melee is still one of the worst parts of this game. Crysis 2 was probably worse in that department but I dislike the implementation here (still).

The retail rewards aren't in the beta, they're meant for the retail version. My understanding is your account automatically gets flagged server side when you complete an objective. Come retail time they'll automatically unlock the rewards when you log in with your beta account or they'll send out voucher codes via email.

The avatar will likely be distributed as a voucher sent to your email, sometime before retail if arne is successful.

I like the slower mechanics. Prevents you from just getting straight up ganked all the time, and you actually have to use tactics and cover wisely rather than running around the map killing everyone if you're great at being twitchy.
