Uncharted 3 MP Beta Thread: Cinematic Murder Testing

Posted my revised feedback in the beta forum:

I already opened a thread to give some feedback in the first few days of the beta, but after a lot more playtime in the different modes, and after all the tweaks and updates we had, I guess revising my impressions would be a wise idea. So here they are.

1. Most of my qualms were fixed, and I got used to many elements (speed, aiming, sprinting, etc.) that seemed off at first. Bravo, ND!
2. Power plays, health and weapon damage seem very well balanced now. Perhaps the G-MAL is still a little bit too powerful, but whatever. Good job here.
3. The shotgun feels really underused. Every map should have at least one SAS spawn point, if not two in larger maps.
4. I love the Yemen map, especially because of its verticality, but it's quite big and 2 vs. 2 vs. 2 matches tend to concentrate all the activity around the towers, leaving the rest of the map noticeably underused.
5. I mantain that the plane boarding part of Airstrip starts off with the villains in a position of disadvantage. Perhaps if both heroes and villains started off from trucks on different sides of the plane, or if the trucks behind had some taller cover pieces not to leave the villains too exposed at first, things would be a little bit more balanced.
6. Something should be done for the randoms unable (or unwilling) to play objective-based games correctly. Besides making objective medals more valuable and de-emphasizing the KDR, perhaps communicating better the rules of each objective mode would help. Be it through the announcer (providing she doesn't get too annoying, her constant suggestions to use cluster grenade kickbacks when there's no one around are already a bit too much...), through voice-acted dialogue between the characters ("Come in here, we'll score faster" in KotH or "Go get the idol" in Plunder), or tips and tricks before respawns.
7. Free for All and Three Team DM matches feel too short. The score required to win the game could be raised a bit in both modes, especially the first.
8. Not being able to exit matchmaking at any time is annoying, especially when the matchmaking screws up and someone in your party is cut out of the game (see later).
9. The invites are slightly more visible now, but still inferior to the PSN-based ones from UC2.
10. Being able to see who's in your friends' party, and being able to join them in ongoing matches (if there's any room for a new player) would be extremely appreciated.
11. I really hope we won't see the Cursed power play ever again.
12. After thinking more about it, not being able to stack kickback medals is okay. The other solutions to prevent kickback spamming (like raising the medal requirements) would be even worse.

Also, a few glitches/issues:
1. Sometimes the matchmaking brings up one player too much, and one player in the party gets cut out of the game. You can still communicate via headset before the match begins, but he'll stay stuck in matchmaking forever (while everyone else starts playing instead).
2. Long PSN usernames are visualized incorrectly in the player lists.
3. Today, in a Plunder match, the idol was thrown up here, and stayed there the whole match instead of respawning: http://i.imgur.com/hDxet.jpg
4. Sometimes, when jumping off the ledge next to the turret closest to the Heroes' spawn point in Chateau, the camera gets behind some geometry and the whole screen goes grey for a few seconds.

Can't think of anything else right now, hope this helps.

More decals for your emblem.

Good list man.

One thing I don't agree with it medal stacking.

I think the game plays better without people being able to stack 6 speedy g or smoke bombs. God it is annoying for people to have speedy g on the entire time, I can't imagine someone being able to stack them. Fuck that.

Someone had the good idea that the bargain booster on gold should offer you stacking ability. That one would be fine for me.

Bad Jocchan. Bad bad. Cursed is awesome. It was a PP that didn't actually benefit the winning team like the other PPs outside of Double Damage (which is awful) do. In fact, I'd like to see more Power Plays like Cursed that require teamwork from the winning team to overcome. Add in a PP that calls in a band of Yetis that attack both the winning team and the losing team to a lesser degree. Call in a helicopter that can only be taken down with a stinger missile that appears on the map at the same.

I want the powerplays to result in fun objectives to complete for the winning team. As they are now, all they do is bring in easier kills to the winning team. Marked Man and Exposed brings in all the little peasants to the skillful players so they can be swatted down like flies.

That's why I suggested to raise the medal requirements for both Smoke Bombs and Speedy G :)
You can still limit them without forcing everyone to use the kickbacks as soon as possible because they're aware they'll be wasting medals every second they hold out.

Sorry man, but I really don't like it. I'm not a fan of Double Damage either, but at least that one doesn't introduce a strong element of confusion to the gameplay (which is something I'll never be a fan of).

Calling in yetis or helicopters instead? Sign me in for that shit.

Yeah, but having speedy and smoke at 7 rather than 10 medals make them an attractive option. If they were 10, for an extra 4 medals, you get an RPG. For the same amount, you get a cluster bomb.

One of the main draws of speedy g is that it does have such a low medal requirement.

Yeah, I'm not sure it's a good idea for the medals/kickbacks to stack.

Imagine someone stacking like 10 clusterbombs in a match then just spamming them all at once. People were doing the same thing in black ops. Stacking like 10 RC cars then spamming them all at once and turning the map into an exploding hotwheels track.

Very good point. I'll revise that.

To do that, they'd need 100 medals :p

Stacking 10 clusterbombs will never happen, and even if it does - what's the worst thing that can happen? The dude kills your whole team with it? OK, that can be done with 1 clusterbomb too...

Had a match earlier when literall, as soon I entered the game was over. The last match I had went to OT and it was the 1st time I saw each player on a team have at least 10 kills each.

They could just do a twist on medal stacking to make it not so powerful, like increasing the cost per use. The smoke kickback was pretty crazy as it was, but if at first it's 7, then 11, then 15, etc. it's still stackable but not as abusable. As-is the smoke one is especially worthless, as it's very situational and also completely random. Saving up 7 medals for a chance to poof three inches to the left vs. 7 to get a big speed boost for 20 seconds, or getting a few more to get a cluster grenade really isn't worth it.

Well yeah the “10 clusterbombs” thing was just an exaggeration = p

But the point is, imagine a very close/competitive game that comes down to the wire with only a 2 - 4 kill difference between each team. Then some dude who has 3 or 4 clusterbombs up his sleeve just unleashes them at the end and wins a cheap victory. If you were on the losing side of that I’m sure you’d be saying “cheap!” or “that’s bullshit!”

I'm glad the medals don't stack for kickbacks anymore. That was an awesome change, in my opinion. I also think Cursed should never return. It was awful.

I also think the yellow "X" in Siege should go away too. Replace it with text that says, "come here" or something because randoms just don't get it even when it tells them what to do the second Siege starts. lol

at level 33, all I really want from ND is: improved traversal- sometimes I jump for a truck within reach and my character will put a leg on the side of the truck and push off as if he was hitting a wall instead of latching onto it or just completing the jump as he should, not to mention some of the short walls that the character refuses to climb up on like the ledge leading to the stairs on the rocket launcher spawn side of chateau in tdm; improved melee detection for stealth kills- I can't count how many times I've got the jump on someone sniping through a window as I approach for the mounted neck twister and end up throwing a punch so he can drop a grenade while I'm waiting for the animation to complete itself, irritating to no end; of course they can always improve netcode; party system could be a lot more robust with a decent clan tab; fix the map glitches and add in a report system that ties into the cinema for the match to catch online cheaters, banish those fuckers. oh and fix the issue of leaving matchmaking after a match.

everything else is fantastic! the game is crack for me. can't wait for the full release. you got my dollars ND, kudos!

That person earned those medals and chose to wait. Good for him.

That might be what I would say if I was on the winning side of it =)

Not sure if I’d feel the same way if I was fighting tooth and nail for a close tough game then lost suddenly due to someone spamming kickbacks.

I do get the other side of the argument in favor of stacking kickbacks and using your kickback when it’s most advantageous instead of being rushed into using it. Totally get it. But I’ve seen stacking killstreak rewards have a really negative and cheapening effect in other MP games and that’s the reason I feel the way I do about them.

Oh what do you mean ? Do you means as ennemies or as helpers ?

As ennemies , i don't see the appeal since ( for example ) we already have these planes firing at me in airstrip.

As helpers i really don't thank this is a good idea

Agreed. It's unresponsive that it pisses me off sometimes.

I think it would be awesome if they made an objective to take down two/three helicopters in Team Objective. Like, both of the teams would be battling out trying to see who can take it down. Something like that would be amazing and fun.

I'd really like to see better incentives for teamwork. For example, instead of penalizing players for grabbing the treasure by restricting them to a handgun unless they constantly delay themselves with throwing animations, give them a compensating reward for saddling themselves with the grunt work. For example, instead of just 100 cash for kills, give them 130 for doing it while carrying the treasure forward. Instead of just getting the 1000 the whole team gets for planting it (at least I'm assuming the whole team is getting it, I'm always the one planting it) give them a bonus of 1250 for putting yourself out there and holding it yourself.

Similarly, give half of those bonuses to teammates who are nearby the treasure carrier. 15 bonus cash for killing an enemy when near the treasure carrier, and 125 for being nearby when the treasure is planted. This encourages the team to work together towards the objective rather than just roaming around for kills.

Or better yet. Make it like plunder and don't give cash for kills unless 1) you're near the treasure or 2) if the kill is assisted by someone in the treasure radius or 3) the enemy you killed was damaging someone in the treasure radius.

Sounds harsh, but the mode is explicitly labeled for teamwork, and players will quickly adjust their play to follow the reward structure design.

That's the first thing I thought after Mikey's post, honestly, but it wouldn't be a better solution. It would basically work exactly like the current situation, except you'd be always "wasting" a set number of medals, and it would increase greatly the number of variables that need balancing (leading to absolute mess).

Saving up your kickback till the right moment is neither cheap nor bullshit, because you haven't been using it earlier and you deserve to reap the benefits for that.

Well it's been a very Uncharted day for me. I beat UC2 on Crushing, then hopped in for my last round of the Beta, tried Coop Adventure, which was really fun, but I hope that short section is just a taster for more interesting scenarios (although the double choppers on top of the tower is promising).

Then did TDM on the Yeman map. It's a really nice map, but I kept having to stop myself just looking around at the scenery, can't wait to see how that translates into an SP level. Managed to see my emblem plastered on the wall for the first time ever. Saying that I think a large part of it was playing against a useless team. They kept making a b-line for the sniper points, but would net 2 or 3 deaths for everyone of my team they did manage to kill.

Anyway, I think that's me for the Beta. I don't really want to overdose myself too much, since I'm not really much of a multiplayer guy to begin with. It's definitely left me wanting more, which is how I want to leave it.

I never said that saving your kickback for the right moment was cheap or bullshit.

What I said is that being able to spam multiple kickbacks all at once could lead to cheap bullshit.

Maybe a good solution would be to allow kickbacks to stack, but you would have to wait 20 or 30 seconds in between using them.

I'm in the camp who believes stacking medals is retarded. it works well now. you don't have to worry about an almost unlimited spam of cluster grenades and rockets overwhelming the match. stacking medals feels too much like the one man army perk in MW2 that noobtubers exploit the shit out of. fuck that bullshit!

Is anyone else unable to connect right now? For some reason the 'Connecting' progress bar isn't totally filling up and I have to quit out which is resetting my PS3 again. Not sure what happened, I haven't had these problems since the beginning of the beta and I played yesterday with zero problems.

That could lead to some people staying hidden till that time lapse has passed, which would still decrease the spam but would also increase the number of campers.
It's not an easy solution, actually. Even the smallest change can have the biggest consequences.
While I'm not a fan of the current setup without stacking, it certainly works.

Thankfully this can't happen because you have to earn the medals.

I so want to see more of these type of modes in U3 - and less of the standard fare thats being put in Objective. This could be something that really changes it up. Perhaps if all the RPGs were placed directly in the middle of the map - inside somewhere.

~

I thought of that whole - "kills only count within this area" mode - and wished that area was portable.

If ND could make it so that the area was just a circle around the biggest killer of the match on each team - a really freaking fun mode could be possible.

Once someone else on that team acquires a higher kill amt though - the area would then encircle that teammate.

I could see teams moving around in packs, with some stragglers providing outside support, or however people would like to play that mode. Would be so awesome.

Also no showing the location to the other team - I'd think of this as Marked Man in reverse - could call it "Follow The Leader".

earning medals is easy plus they hand out three at a time in chests. combine the two and it feels the same. I'm all about power weapons, believe me. I'll grab the launcher from the log, fire both rounds, activate my kickback, and do it again. that is enough power for any one person to yield at a time. stacking is unnecessary. you use your kickback strategically and then build up for the next. maybe ND could convert medals to extra cash when they aren't being applied to kickbacks so people don't feel as cheated...

You need 14 medals for an RPG, and getting more than 28 (necessary for two kickback activations) in a single match is no easy task, even with the triple medals lying around in chests. If you're getting more than 28, you're good enough for the RPG kickback not to make a real difference, to be honest.

Weird. After connecting, the game is trying to load the online user agreement for some reason, except it's perma-stuck in a loading animation and I can't play :/

EDIT: Oh, great. I tried exiting and my console froze.

Same here. Sucks quit a bit....

Wow, that sucks that ya'll are losing progress. I'm not playing the Beta again until that is fixed. I would be pretty pissed for getting to level 35, playing all those matches in all the gametypes, and then for them to just delete like that.

I am level 25 now. I really liked the beta. Here is my final feedback. I think about 95% of my games are Team Deathmatch. I REALLY like the game in general. The climbing and action feels really good and is fun. Here is a list of things that I either really liked or disliked.

I should note that I have played UC2 online under 5 hours, so I can't really compare it.

General

- The intro/outro movies are cool for the first time, OK for the second time, and annoying after the third time.
- When someone is hanging on a ledge you sometimes can't throw them off... While they CAN throw you off the tower (in Yemen all the time).
- Sometimes when you think you can throw a grenade there's an invisible wall blocking it when you are throwing it from cover > you dead as a result.
- As I said before there should be more voices and stuff (both the characters and a narrator) the games feels too dull now sometimes.
- The customization is nice, but I do hope they give A LOT more options in the final game.
- I hate the sprinting, I'd much rather have non.
- The high-five thingy is pretty cool, just like the taunts.
- The treasure thingy is just confusing as hell. How the hell do I even unlock new items with treasures?

Maps

Airport
- The spawns are horribly broken in phase 1.
- The jumping between cars is a bit messy sometimes in phase 1.
- I'd say add 1 T-bolt sniper.

Chateau
- Fucking glitchers under & above the map...
- I think a shotgun would fit nicely here.
- I think it's a pretty good map otherwise.

Yemen
- The map is gorgeous. The gameplay is definitely the best of all maps and the most refreshing.
- I do feel this map has the best weapon balance. AWESOME sniping map.
- There is a lot of camping, but I don't feel it's too game-breaking as there are enought ways to counter.

Weapons

- I feel the AK47 and G-mal feel pretty balanced.
- I have the feeling there aren't enought different kind of weapons on the map.. Which makes it a bit boring sometimes.
- The shotgun sucks, buff it.
- I love the T-bolt but I think it might be slightly overpowered.
- I like how they made the riot shield a 'main weapon'.
- Chateau and airport feel too dull with weapons.

Gamestypes

- The powerplay is a nice idea. But REMOVE THE 200% DAMAGE! It's too insane.
- I played a few games team objective. It's pretty confusing what's happening and what the goal is for all of the objective types.
- I played Co-op adventure 1 time. The idea is pretty cool and I really liked it, too bad I played with a bunch of retards.
- Co-op hunter arena is pretty cool as well. It's a bit too slow in my opinion. I only played 1 game. The coin idea is pretty good.

Would the UC3 Beta affect UC2 in any way? I was trying to log onto the MP to check the state of my profile since I last played and it couldn't connect?

Ah well. Guess I'll be playing more of the Beta then.

Sucks.

Great games tonight.
Everything was erased, not just progress of rounds. I turned on the console and started back from level 1 as if it was my first time playing (I also had to accept the EULA again). Hopefully they have a backup of my data for the full game rewards. I was only missing the two decal ones, and I was planning to finish the requirements for competitive tonight (and perhaps co-op tomorrow if possible) :/

Hopefully it's fixed soon. Beta is almost going to be over too. :(

Last few games with friends there were so many of us we had to play deathmatch (please change this ND let there be co-op for up to 6 people) and the lag was horrible. I put 3 sniper shots into a guys head didn't die. Then there was one where I unloaded 2 1/2 rounds into some one and they throw a grenade and I die before it even reaches me. The lag I've been experiencing basically makes deathmatch unplayable.
