Underrated Games That Had Their Sequels Canceled

As a series, Fear Effect fared well critically, though didn't quite set sales charts on fire. Fear Effect Inferno was a sequel in development for PS2 (Fear Effect 2: Retro Helix on PS1 having been a prequel). Got cancelled, and now the franchise is nothing but a distant memory.

And Xbox ;)

While Ubisoft claims the sequel is still in development, I refuse to believe them. And, based on the sales disaster that the original was, Beyond Good and Evil.

MANDOZA!!!

Heavenly Sword 2 was also in development, but was subsequently cancelled.
Yeah, I think Guerrilla Cambridge (Sony Cambridge at the time) was working on it. Loved the world and its characters. It just needed a better developer and they would've fit that role nicely. Shame.

As painful as it is to not receive a sequel, it's for the best. You do NOT want the Ubisoft of today having anything to do with the franchise, would you?

That was just a lie to give a suitably dark reason to cancelling it; maybe the dev team's way of trying to make an urban legend. After all, I'm pretty sure the news of the deaths of six of Sony's first-party developers wouldn't break in the bonus content of Twisted Metal: Head On.

Haha damn I think you are right

A great FPS that unfortunately doesn't get remembered, partially because a certain game by the name of Half Life released shortly after.

It had an expansion or sequel planned, but it was never released.

It was funny, but I remember the Second Sight guys saying, while he story in Second Sight was great, they agreed PSI Ops had better gameplay. The games cannibalized each other, so neither got a sequel.
Just like Split/Second and Blur, both already mentioned in this thread (except in that case it killed both studios too :().

As long as Michael Ancel and his team handle it I'll feel better about it.

Anyone else and you may as well take it out to pasture now.

The Darkness 2 :/ :/

Bulletstorm :/ :/ :/

Was The Darkness 3 ever confirmed to be in development?

Bulletstorm makes me sad, though. That game was so much fun. :(

Not sure if it's permanently cancelled but development on Rage 2 was halted because Doom 4 needed to be restarted or something along those lines.

Beyond Good and Evil. Ubisoft still claims they are working on a sequel but you really gotta question that since its been so long and nothing.

Was it? Hm, the only information I had seen regarding it up until this point had mentioned PS2 while it was still a thing, so it might've been easy for me to overlook. Either way, a shame that it didn't land anywhere in the end.

Yep, Ive seen the proof of it. Now, whether or not it was as far along is a different story.

There was supposed to be a sequel to Blur?!?!

For me I'd say KOTOR, Beyond Good and Evil and Prey.

WHAT ARE THIS ?!

I loved Blur, so much fun, I didnt know Blur 2 had been announced...

Well kinda deceptive of me...it wasn't technically called/confirmed to be Blur 2.

But the people who made Blur were making that game until they got shut down :(

They apparently improved the basic Blur engine graphics too.

I always wondered why SCE never did a collab project with Rockstar North for a reboot of The Getaway (which would be now for PS4) instead of that none-to-be-seen AGENT project.

A London-based studio working on a London-based GTA-style game could have been awesome, with which, Guerilla Cambridge could have use such opportunity to come back in the home console space and learn a bit from a bigger studio. I sent a question to Playstation and Boyes on Twitter with #GetawayOnPS4 (seems a bit too tacky) regarding this matter. :P

Lots of great suggestions. Republic Commando, Bulletstorm, and Timesplitters oh my!

Ill throw out Metal Arms: Glitch in the System.

Jim Sterling did a phenomenal interview about the canceled sequel a few years back on Destructoid.

The sequel to the Alias (TV show) game for PS2, Xbox & PC was in early development stages before it got cancelled.
The first one wasn't a particularly good game, but I played all the way through it since I loved the show and the game had some really nice ideas, both stylistically and gameplay wise. Also, it was one of the few licensed games of that era that captured the likeness of its stars extremely well, and it also had one of the absolute best soundtracks.

Fuck, i forgot about Blur 2 and Folklore :/ Guess they deserve a mention too..

Whilst the game isn't the best I enjoyed the time I spent with it when it came out, it has aged horribly and I would've loved to see the way the sequel would have improved things.

My 2nd choice is Darksiders.

Darksiders 2 exist? And Darksiders 3 has been discussed by Nordic as a definite possibility in July?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the sequel to this game was at the very least discussed by the developers. Considering how this game had a major cliffhanger, the only explanation I can think of is that a sequel was definitely planned at one point. The people behind this game have since disbanded, so a sequel is most likely never happening, which is a shame.

Sphinx was planned as a franchise, but it sold poorly and THQ pulled out. Eurocom owned the IP but couldn't get any publisher interest.

Prey for sure. In reality, Prey 2 was a tremendous accomplishment for a team of only 55 people in Wisconsin. One of the leads from Hangar 13 Games called out Pete Hines for lying about why the game was canned.

I definitely wish Anachronox Prime and STALKER 2 happened, too.

Did it ever come out exactly why this was canceled?
