UPGRADESTATION!(PS3 now supports dts-HD master audio)

iirc DD Live is 640kpbs max. PS3 games use only DD Live because no DD+ Live or DTS-HD Connect?

iirc resistance have 1gb of 22gb for audio + tard pack no hdmi. make sense because uncompression must stay in PS3 ram limit? average joes can hear the audio of full pcm after most got numb by mp3 and cheap avr speakers?

good for avphiles but imo more ram is a good idea.
 
Most budget amps with HDMI don't process the sound though - just pass to a TV. I hope the encoding to DD or DTS (whichever they choose) is good quality, as thats likely my only option unless they give us a component + 5.1 audio cable


Considering PS3 being the best bluray player out. It is odd that it'll play more audio formats, more disc formats, is the only one with HDMI 1.3 etc. Shame it doesn't have a remote :P

I almost think the current bluray mess helps Sony. The other CE guys will probably hope PS3 can turn the fortunes around and screw HDDVD, thus opening the market for HD to bluray, from which they can then sell their normal players in 2007 onwards. If PS3 doesn't make a splash I think bluray risks being dead by the end of 2007

I'd imagine the PS3 has an IR reciever built in... it damn well better I mean. The PS2 later in it's life had one and the PSTwo does too.

So that'll mean you should be able to just buy a remote for it. And for those of us fortunate enough to own something like a Harmony remote, it means that we'll be able to remote control it from the beginning (or at least for free when they release the remote).
 
speaking of the the remote type features.
does anybody know if the home button on the controller turn the ps3 on? I know it activates the ps3's wireless/bluetooth and brings up the xmb menu, but does it also turn the ps3 on?
 
Just on a note about standalone players, and their market..what Blu-ray players are scheduled for the end of the year? How do they compare with PS3?

Believe it or not, they dont....all the announced BD-ROM movie players are pretty barebones compared to PS3...

That's a little err overkill for a remote control, IR is much much better suited for the job. I wouldn't be surprised to see a little red window appearing somewhere on the PS3 come launch.
 
A usb IR sensor wouldnt be out of the question would it? for psp owners, its a remote as well.

I can't answer it with any authority, but I can't see any reason why you wouldn't be able to turn on the PS3 with the controller's home button.

Haha.... all of us harmony owners will start cussing out Sony if it doesn't have an IR port.

It's not that expensive, and the PS3 is at a premium price, so I don't see why it wouldn't. Also it's something that can be integrated into that mirrored black plastic sheen without an edge...

Anybody know what kind of video formats we will be able to drag over to our ps3's come november? I assume MP4 made famous by the psp (please god make higher resolutions enabled on ps3....infact on psp as well). But what about xvids/avi's, wmv's, movs, etc?

PS3 could be a hit if I could just put all that shit on the 60gig hard drive, never having to convert video, or burn discs. :D

That depends on whether Linux is really runnable on the PS3. In that case, basically everything will be supported.


As far as the actual PS3 media software, I would except pretty much all popular non-MS media formats will be supported. Though it's possible not all codecs will be there initially ... I wouldn't be surprised if it gets updated over time ala the PSP (due to time constraints - there are more important fish to fry initially).
 
Well thats good then. I can put up with converting (as I have been with the psp) as long as the video resolution supported isnt some low quality shit, larger the better. But it would definately be better if it just supported them with no converting needed.

I'm quite sure it will be able to run HD resolution files ... no problem.
 
Well yeah, it should handle them no problem, the problem would be sony allowing you to run them. You might already know that the psp MP4 resolution size is pretty restricted compared to UMD videos (which is dvd type resolution IIRC). And the fact they dont allow any other file types on the psp is also non-refreshing. :/

Home made MP4's (ASP or AVC) are restricted to 76,800 pixels (320×240, 368×208 etc), UMD movies are encoded at 720x480.
 
apparently the logos only mean they will decode the content. it doesnt mean that it will output at 5.1 so it may just be like the HD-A1's initial firmware

Anyways, I don't think there are any Blu-ray titles using TrueHD/DTS-HD yet but I could be wrong.
 
Question for those who may know or think its possible. Can the PS3 display images from the PSP via USB onto your TV screen? i.e. watching some UMD or playing games on your TV.

Don't think thats possible. But the opposite might be possible, putting ps3 visuals on the psp via lan network.

Why would it decode it but not put it out in 5.1 to 7.1? It has the outputs necessary, the decoders necessary and the licenses necessary. For what possible reason would it NOT do it in full 5.1+?

Why was 5.1 only added to the HD-A1 in the latest firmware??

I only brought it up because the Dolby representative mentioned earlier in the thread pointed out that the logo does not necessarily denote 5.1 output so chill the **** out or take it up with him

Because it was a rushed P.O.S. as far as firmware is concerned. It obviously should not have came out when it did.

None of the publicized Blu Ray Assoc announcements yesterday had anything to do with the PS3 that I saw...

Thanks. That should clear up exactly what the logo means now, then. It's just a case that they've revamped all their logos, as opposed to the funky symbol indicating Master Audio *sigh*. Back to the drawing board as to what the PS3 is capable of.
 
Ha, so now we see the logo properly, and it doesn't match with any on that list ;) So..what does the logo tell us?

What the hell would 2.0 + digital out mean?


My guess would be 2.0 analog and standard DTS via digital (optical and HDMI)? In that case, that could be evidence of no multi-channel analog break-out box?

Who knows if it is final - in look, or in actual decoding capabilities.

we haven't seen any official accessories yet for PS3 have we?

Although they might use the advanced audio codecs to push a premium PS3 on you. Shame as although I'll have a premium PS3 I want to connect via component (I have a switch ready) and I don't have a HDMI receiver.
