Usage Based Billing approved, Canadian govt shoots it down, more developments to come

When are the tighter ISP caps coming here to the U.S.? I've heard they've been wanting it sometime soon.

BTW, I don't even know what my ISP's current cap is.

I downloaded 15gb of assets this morning alone for a project I'm working on.

Seriously, fuck this country right now and how much of a pansy society it's becoming. I'm so ashamed to be Canadian right now.

The media's coverage of this has been...uh...lacking, to say the least. Nothing on CTV's tech section. CBC has a brief synopsis buried under headlines about will.I.am joining Intel. Nothing at all on Global's site.

The lack of transparency with our media is unreal.

Cause the major telecoms own all the news sources. Only reason the internet is the only place we see this. Someone needs to make a youtube vid and have it go viral. That way it can help expose how stupid this and how bad it is for our country.

Bell owns CTV, Shaw owns Global. No surprises there.

25 gigs? That sucks so much. Guess I won't suscribe to Netflix anymore 5 HD movies and you have 20 Gigs+ eaten.

Right now I have like 60 gigs for 40$ with Bell so they will simply downgrade my contract? I hope the price will be lowered.

I used to think this bullshit would stay faaar away from my country but after hearing news that mobile providers are going to do it I'm afraid for the future :/

If nothing else, this has gotten me looking into colbanet's offerings since they, apparently, own their own lines and aren't affected by this ruling.

I'm just out of the zone for their 24 mbps ADSL2+ service but from what I see, it looks like a very tempting switch for me to make (with the dry loop service) once it's available in my area.

I like videotron's 50 mbps speed but i still butt up against bandwidth limits every month and i gotta pay through the nose to get what i have now.

DAMNIT! It's only downtown! :(

I still can't believe the lack of representation we, the public, have when it comes to regulatory decisions like this.

I turned on one of my computers today and didn't touch a thing... It downloaded 700 MB.

Unless didn't touch a thing means that Steam downloaded tons of updates, you seem to be in trouble, because there is no way in hell that your computer will generate 700MB in traffic without doing anything.

There goes my Netflix sub. :(

So just to be clear, will the monthly charges will go down as well and I'm assuming the only choices will be speed? 25GB is such an unbelievable pisstake.

I can make do without Netflix (even though I shouldn't have to) but I need to be able to browse and game, what choice do we have? Revolution?

Well the public is served by its MPs and Cabinet can override the CRTC if it wants (though that is being questioned).

I would expect that if there was enough public outcry and this became a political issue then there would be the possibility that government of the day could become involved and the CRTC could be overruled.

And there won't be a public outcry because no one outside of hardcore internet users will even know it happened.

I'm on Rogers. So the same thing is coming down the line in a a few months...are there any alternatives?

Also...how does that impact your packages? Do you still pay the same price for your 60gb or 100gb packages (if you are, or are not, tied into a deal)?

I really want to know this as well...

It kind of has to though. I mean, I pay $45 for crap right now but if I we're on the ultimate package surely this 25GB cap subscription would be a cheaper flat rate than the $99 for the ultimate package.

How much is unlimited at Rogers with a 10M plan?
Check here.

They don't offer unlimited. There 10MB up and 512kbs down is $46.99, soon to be $47.99.

Canada, please tell us what it is like to use runrig farming and live under a fuedal system. You are becoming a living historical park.

You know what I love? When they break down 25GB according to how many emails and web pages I can download. I love drinking their lemonade-piss.

I'm assuming there will be plans that exceed the 25gb for a huge cost, or is 25gb the dead set cap?

Does this affect cable as well? Teksavvy does offer cable which is lightning quick.

What about businesses? How does this affect them? Can I run a business line into my apartment? I'd pay $120 per month for unlimited cap and better speeds.

I don't understand.. Is the 25GB cap for new subscribers only?

I have a 25GB with some bullshit 40GB 'Insurance' with Bell's Fibe6 service.. Come March 1st, is it 25GB for EVERYONE? Even if you are a Fibe25 user?

Fucking cunts.

It'll probably be like $1-$2 per gig over the cap, which is where they plan on making the money in this crime.

Edit:

Just noticed Rogers is increasing the price of the modem rental to $4 from $3 as of March 1st...

What a surprise...I got my yearly "Our costs are increasing so we have to raise your bill" letter from Rogers today in the mail. FFS I HATE CANADA
telecom companies.

It says if your currently on a promo plan (which everyone should be on a retention plan or your doing it wrong) that it won't effect you but still this is bullshit. Every damn year they do this.

apparently(?), grandfathered plans will be fine, as long as you signed up before 2007.

Don't know if you saw my earlier post:

The CRTC has also, in this ruling, given Bell the right to raise our grandfathered accounts amounts twice a year in order to force us to move over to their UBB accounts.

I actually don't have a problem with lower taxes...When companies make profits because they are the best in a competitive market. Not some kind of oligarchy.
Too bad TV/Internet/Home Phone/Cell Phone services aren't a competitive market at all.

Everyone has the same service with the same plans at the same prices. Only difference between Telus/Bell/Rogers etc is their phones.

Instead of writing your MP, how about writing to Harper and telling him that you don't want him in power anymore. Then, send a copy of that email/letter to Ignatieff and Layton and tell them to force an election.

NDP is the only ones who have been complaining about this issue since it was first brought up, so if they don't win in the next election, then I really don't know what else to say.

I feel for you guys in Canada.

As a US comparison, I pay about $55 a month for 25 down, 3 Up. Which seems fairly expensive, but at least there are no caps. The problem with my ISP is bundling, where you CAN get a better deal on each service if you are willing to buy ALL their services. Since they've started doing phone service, all of the decent bundles contain it, and I don't want their phone service, so I've just been paying the $55 rate. I don't like it but I can't say it makes me angry. Most of my friends will curse and rant for hours, though.

Side-note: This is in the gaming section? It's only tangentially related to gaming, most posts have been decidedly OT fare.

I don't know if this is true, but I read here that the cap will be 60 in Quebec:

Still fucking bullshit law. The mainstream media need to get on Bell's ass for this.

I already have a 60gb cap with Bell. I never go that high since I download at MOST 1gb a day, maybe 2gb on the weekends.

But Bell still sucks and I want to get away from them soon.
