Usage Based Billing approved, Canadian govt shoots it down, more developments to come

Alright, so maybe having your tweet read on air during the debate kind of sucks when would-be politicians start trying to follow-trade you.

You know what's a fun game? Searching LinkedIn as names of the people from the CRTC side pop up.

Len Katz (Vice Chairman of CRTC) the previous Vice President and then President of Business Solutions at Rogers.
Lynne Fancy (Director General of CRTC) the previous Product Manager at Bell.

Ok, so Fancy's isn't that nuts as that wasn't directly from Bell and she was just a Product Manager but jebus at Katz.

There's a long known conflict of interest with the people on the board for the CRTC.

I've written nearly every MP in Toronto now. Hell, I even wrote Ford asking him to speak out against it.

I take it from the 10 pages since I left that some exciting shit happened? :lol

Basically CRTC head proving to canadians that he's a bell employee

Let's try to roll it up in one fake quote

"so the other day, me and few of my bell buddies... Er.. Acquaintances were sitting down discussing how similar the ISP industry is to cell networks and how data is like oil and electricity we discovered that we could con people into thinking Canada can run out of bandwidth! How, you ask? Because people are stream video of other people playing three dimensional games over IPTV, which is not Internet based I might add, the congestion is obvious. So my bell buddies, uh, contacts told me to lower the gigahertz cap and I agreed without question"

We discovered the chairman of the CRTC is actually clueless. And he takes his orders directly from Bell.

Hah, go figures.

So did the government or anyone respond? Are we just getting a 60 day reprieve?

Every party is against the decision. If the government isn't satisfied by the CRTC review, they'll overturn it anyway.

CRTC strategy seems to be not to change anything, but wait 60 days and hope it blows over.

Ughhhhh. Hopefully we won't forget about this by the time April comes along. :(

Conservatives just need to kill it entirely and we can move on from this idiocy.

So is "three dimensional games" better, or worse than "a series of tubes"...
I never really understood the whole 'series of tubes' meme. It was a reasonably accurate description of the internet.

Yeah, I agree. I think taken out of context, the comment was just easy to make fun of. Ask a layperson to describe the internet with a simple metaphor and I'm not sure they could do any better.

(Other than "information superhighway". Anyone who says that deserves to be shot).

for whoever wasnt able to catch the stream or these last ten pages, this fake quote is laughably accurate. gigahertz, 3 dimensional games, etc etc

"More Bandwidth is being used up... ...this causes congestion."

"The average user uses 15.5 gigabits, and therefore most users..."

"According to the information provided by Bell Canada, Canadians on average use 15.4GB per month".
Why am I the average user? Why should I be PENALIZED for bandwidth others pay for but don't use?

"Ordinary internet users should not be made to pay for the bandwidth used up by high usage customers"

"[We Want] Small IPs retain maximum flexibility and a key source of innovation for the industry"

"We did it because of Bell... ...because of course it was Bell who wanted the delay..."
Fucking puppets of Bell.

"We realize the heavy users are being subsidized by the small users"
"Usage is not unlimited, you have a cap and you can't go over without paying extra."
"I don't see why the general, ordinary user should subsidize the heavy user"

YOU ALREADY DO PAY MORE FOR UNLIMITED. IF YOUR USING UNDER 15GB, DON'T BUY A 60GB PLAN PERHAPS? DO YOU UNDERSTAND WHAT SUBSIDIZING IS? ITS NOT MAKING EVERYONE PAY MORE FOR LESS. WHY DOESN'T HE UNDERSTAND THIS.

"We are the first country in leading network neutrality, something others are copying across the world."

"IPTV is really not part of the internet service, it is a seperate service, you do not get an IPTV through the internet."
Are you serious? I thought he began trolling at this point.

"How many people will this hit? The heavy users. How many people will this hit? I don't know, I don't have the figures. You should ask Teksavvy, Teksavvy has the figures. You should ask this company, what percentage of your consumers will be hit by this?"

Shots fired? How the hell do they not know how many people will be affected in a decision affecting 9 million users?

"It's just the minority we're talking about, the 6%, only 500 000 people.."
What?

"If you don't have high speed internet, this has no impact on you whatsoever."

"The explosion of use on the internet, and the increasing use of it for video, makes it obvious I think to everybody that usage is increasing phenomenally. Is the capacity increasing at the same rate? That's what we're asking."
How do you combat limited capacity? BY RESTRICTING IT TO EVERYONE IN EXCHANGE FOR MONEY OF COURSE. Also, this was not what you were asking.

"I'm quite sure every ISP in Canada has packages for light, medium and heavy usage."
Yes, they do. Now why do these need to be reduced and taxed to subsidize those who have light usage but pay for medium or heavy usage regardless?

"Well, healthcare is not residential, so this would have no affect on it."
*after lady spends a minute explaining how doctors use the internet to prescribe and access medical records*

"Well, the usage of Skype will have no effect on the 20GB cap. The cap comes in when you do video, HEAVY video, or you play three dimensional games"
Millions of MapleStory players just sighed in relief. SMH.

Brian Masse + Peter Braid and two of the ladies I unfortunately didn't catch the name of at the end laid smackdown in second half, thank god. Just posted some quotes that irritated me, or of note for those who missed em.

Yeah just know the angry, grumpy stuttering and slurring guy represents the CRTC. He also has a moment where he gets exponentially aggravated and frustrated, and almost breaks.

No, you need to watch the video. I tried that and got confused durring the french parts since the same translator translated both sides. It's impossible to tell when one person stopped talking and the other begins.

hes not trolling. he just wants more money in his pocket. also it sounds as if him and his "army" of dumbass people know nothing about the internet.

More shitty misinformation passed on by Andrew Coyne on The National. Guuuuh.

He's a fucktard - I was enjoying watching him get thrashed by Tony Clement last night on twitter

Watching CBC now and all you hear from the liberal reps is "blah blah blah its the conservatives fault". They aren't looking for solutions to problems just to score election points. It seems these interviews are just going to be bullet points from the original meeting.
Well, it is the Conservatives fault. The CRTC needs to be fixed and the Conservatives won't be the ones to do it. Neither will the Liberals probably. :p

Once Clement reviews it all I'm sure the guy will regret having not just said something like "No comment". This will all come back to bite them and I sure hope it leads to some changes on the CRTC board.

The problem with change is Harper wants someone who will push through SunTV with special treatment.

Awesome interview.

The one thing about Clement is he won't call out the large companies for what they're really doing. And his 'we must keep it competitive' doesn't sound quite as good as 'we're going to protect the consumers from these money hungry monopolies'.

I think it's a bit BS that Mr. Clement is dropping bombs on Twitter. I know he claims he's been trying to contact the CRTC, but it makes it really easy for them to deny phone calls and put him on the spot for "not contacting us."
