Video game art/designs that just upset you.

SC4_Talim.jpg

Soul Calibur 4 was all kinds of dumb (and all around terrible) in terms of character outfits but I really could have done without "transparent trousers" Talim

If art design you dont like actually upsets you it may be time to take a look at your priorities, but this thread is gonna be good, wildly divergent artstyles are going to get described as "anime", somebody will probably insinuate that a wide swathe of posters are pedophiles, people will decry boobies and others will decry the decrying of boobies, people will rant about their special hatred of the colours brown and green, etc.

To address the topic, "retro style" pixel art causes me to switch off these days, it was novel at first and is sometimes done well. But over the last year or two it just feels like a cop-out (or bowing to economic pressure) dressed up as an "artistic choice". The computer game art equivalent of modern art.

As an aside I dont really get the hate for the EO Dancer, Im not a fan of it but its a fairly conservative interpreation of the arabic sword/belly dancer but I dont really see what makes it "the most embarassing thing ever".

Is this for real? :D Hilarious!
"No, guys, chin-down-eyes-up isn't impressive anymore. We must take it to another level - no eye contact whatsoever! In fact, fuck eyes - let's pose everyone like a badass and then CROP THEIR HEADS OUT! That's what kids find cool these days!"

Nice post. The character design for the Etrian Odyssey series is simply terrible.

Nah, this game actually has some pretty good looking characters for once, of course some are questionable (that dancer, the clothes are good but the loli design that artist like so much doesn't fit that class).
It's also one of the few games where females armor actually don't take the shape or their boobs pushing it instantly to the top of the chain.

EO4 is not as good though, those feets :/

I was okay with this one until I got to the feet. Seriously, what's wrong with her feet?

People will come in here and tell you that that's a legitimate art style called Chibi.

Those people are fools. It looks dumb, has always looked dumb, and I can only assume it was created by an artist who couldn't draw feet.

That can't be official art....surely the girls of LoL have more clothes.
I guess my hint about setting up the girls for Rule 34 was not taken correctly. This however was taken from Riot Art

The Fandom of LOL can goes pretty crazy some times though and Riot playing at this with many of the females just asks for it too. Its not hard figure out the the reasoning rule 34 for stuff or the swimsuit fest I showed early.

Anyways another of the many good song from Area Defect https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PzLskvGY_Iw

They look like crab's feet. She looks like she should be skittling sideways out from under a rock. It's creeping me out.

I always say this but...

The animeGaf persecution is real.

Also, just know that at some point in the past, a girl like EO dancer wearing those clothes actually existed in real life.

Just reinstalled ME3 quickly to confirm it there were any doubts.

Gosh damn that suit is bad as the panty clinging in some ecchi anime in the lower regions...... wow. Not that I would know about such animes....... :/

that hair..... also, what the fuck is that thing in his left hand? Is it a sword or a metal paddle?

That's quite disgusting, SE game i presume?

Not sure tbh, but it's usually what Chibi artists do.

To be honest i checked back on my EO 1 to 3 characters and even the loli looking ones have regular looking feets, seems he gave up on them since the 4th and it just doesn't look as good imo.

What bugs me the most are the giant swords in Japanese games and anime.

Also the sexist design of most female characters as well as the bro design of many make characters - special mention to the stupid scarf/hat from Watch Dogs. Oh wow, you're so mysterious, dude.

Again, from a practical perspective that design makes sense; someone who is aware of how CCTV works and where most CCTV is located and wants to commit crimes without being immediately identifiable would go with that sort of clothing combo (or a motorcycle helmet, but you cant generally enter most premises with a motocycle helmet on and not have to remove it precisely due to security considerations).

The Promethian Knights.

Seriously, what the fuck is up with this design?

It doesn't fit at all with existing Forerunner design, which is angular, non-organic in every way, focuses on beams, shields solid transparent forcefields with metallic angular surfaces. it has the pointless skull which is supposed to hit at their origin but when you see their creation appears to be nothing more but aesthetic. It looked at some point like they should have a body suspended in there, but there isn't. It has extra limbs, just to rub it in that it's a limbed robot that clashes completely with all established designs, and then they go and show off the concept art as if we're supposed to say "good job" rather than "you picked the very worst concept out a bad selection." There are floaty bits hanging off for no reason whatsoever other than to look alien, but they don't look cool and they make no sense. They have no clear differentiation or colours that make them obvious in the background to shoot either, or to see their weaponry, so they're hopeless from a gameplay POV too.

They're a completely insipid design, and I really hate it to the extent I would gladly see Halo 5 begin with "all the Promethian Knights were on Requiem, and they are all dead and gone and will never appear again."

Could some of ya'll list the Jrpg, instead of driving by-ing the entire genre of jrpg please?

Anyways , some of the skill girls designs.

It upsets me, You have designs like big band and peacock, and then you have boob nurse, tenticle hair completle with ahegeo face damage frames, and legs red hair the not nazi.

They went for cheese cake, and ruined a lot of designs. When they should have just went for cool designs first and foremost.

Edit:

It may be your favorite, but I think it's a awful design. The proportions are just wrong.

Oh shit, I never noticed. I had her in the blue suit but SURELY that isn't intended. Surely.

I know nothing about League of Legends other than the females. It get's your attention. That Katriana, yo.

Bayonetta shouldn't be taken seriously. It's clearly not serious.

...that is a dude... right?

Yeah, it's a dude, the posture is just misleading. Chest-forward, pelvis-back is an aggressive posture for a man; pelvis-forward, chest-back a submissive one (it has to do with where we keep our center of gravity... and our vulnerable parts). For a woman, pelvis-forward, chest-back is a defensive posture; chest-forward, pelvis-back a sexual one. At least, that's what they teach you in school. This man (boy?) is in a stereotypical "tough girl" pose, not a "tough guy" one.

That doesn't make her design great, it doesn't excuse anything.

I believe the saying goes something like

when you parody something that's already prevalent in your field, do not expect anyone to see it as anything other than contributing to that thing.

There are plenty of characters and poses that go against that logic.

Also I Have never been taught that logic.

Any time where they draw a girl and say its a guy. I could draw a picture of a duck and say its a cat, doesn't mean I didn't draw a duck.

Whatever this shit is called..
All the gears dudes remind me of UGLY pissed off gorillas that constantly scream and throw their crap around while wearing old shitty ass broken down cars as armor.
By far the ugliest art "style" from last gen :X

Hearthstone the thread ! I just can't get over how stupid and cheap the interface of this game looks.

Also, generally high heels on characters that are supposed to be fighters.

I had noticed before but I don't mind, I really appreciate how he doesn't give the girls high heels... I hate that crap.

Mine would be every new weapon, vehicle and character design in Halo 4. Especially the Marines and Spartan Armour, followed by Foreunner architecture.

Marines that went from these nice designs:

Marine_Evolution.jpg

to ones that look more suitable as generic soldiers in something like Crysis 2:

H4-UNSCMarineVariants.jpg

horrible SPARTAN armour that would fit in more with anime than a Halo game:

Sds4y.jpg

Then there's glowing lights on pretty much every Foreunner building, weapons & vehicles that don't even look slightly similar to the design aesthetics of the previous games, the retcons to Master Chiefs armour and some of the UNSC ships...

Is this just for characters or general art design in games?

Yoshi's New Island backgrounds look like they were made using photoshop's default filters and the regular smudge/sharpen/blur tools:
XihVeX9.jpg

Absolutely! But when a "rule" like that is broken, it's usually done for effect... which is the whole point of learning those stupid rules in the first place.

You have now ^___^

Interesting.

I'm an artist myself I have never been taught that. A lot of the stuff I was taught in that regard was more proportions than poses.
I don't think i'll use it much, but its interesting.

Bonus, eventhough the Flood doesn't appear in Halo 4's campaign:

I know the left one is an infected Elite and the right one is an infected Spartan, but still...

One I like the armor.

Two considering halo is highly influenced by a lot of Japanese stuff, I suppose some of it would look like its coming out of an anime.

But I do not agree with you because it just looks like cool space armor.

Yep, those changes were too drastical. Also, I liked the Spartan models in Halo 3 the most, because they kept them simple. Halo 4 just has too much customization, if you ask me.
