Video game art/designs that just upset you.

I've never liked the visual design of Master Chief from Halo. It seems really padded, overdone, and does nothing to make the character interesting. I understand it's a blank slate hidden-face sort of character to draw in the player and cast them in the role, but I don't think it works very well.

Just waiting for SE to do a cross promotional with Uniqlo so you can dress up like your favorite FFXV characters.

Why is people convinced that Dragon's Crown is serious? Imo everything is exaggerate on purpose to become a joke, like Bayonetta.

It's obvious it's not serious. It's still too gross that I can't really look at that character and not cringe (I just don't have any sorcerer's in my party).

Just cause it's not serious doesn't mean I have to like it or not be grossed out by it. I think I said several times in my two posts that I knew it was exaggerated but I really didn't like it.

And honestly, even as exaggeration, non serious it is still obvious it's catering to being a sexual object and they are aiming towards one audience (while it is an annoyance of mine I could overlook it if the design wasn't so horribley over exaggerated. I mean the servant girl at least is not gross to look at).

I actually never wanted to play Sword of Mana when I was younger because I hated the way the character portraits looked, even though the gameplay looked like it appealed to me. I still think they look really bad, but I did grow up enough to actually play and enjoy the game.

Judging from many posts in this thread, no wonder Japanese games aren't doing too well in the west?

There's plenty to complain about in Western games too, mainly how most of the characters are white 30-something males with brown hair (or bald). It's just incredibly boring to collect them all to point and laugh.

I like this better than most final fantasies :3

People hate on the stupid, eleborate and flamboyant FF protag designs so they decide to go for a more grounded, regular look and people hate on them too.

I personally like them. Guy next to Noctis with the glasses is just wearing a suit. Yeah he has stupid gloves on and an ugly shirt but it's better than more JRPG designs.

I usually don't mind most art styles, but I absolutely loathe the style of Borderlands. So much so that I can't bring myself to play it. I guess it's because they were originally trying to make it more realistic but then opted out for the cartoony look, though the realistic look was much better.

I think Borderlands would not feel right with realistic graphics (it's very zany/don't take me too serious/crazy and if the graphics looked realistic it would feel too off with the way the game is coming across).

Overdone? Master Chief was the first of its class.

As a person who lkes those designs, and a person who LOVES customization in games. How can a game have TOO MUCH customization. Its not like its needed to enjoy the experience.

Halo didn't have customization, until Halo 3. With Reach and Halo 4 the amount of customization just exploded and now we have a ridiculous amount of armor parts, which are kinda distracting and don't do anything at all, like you said and I really hope it stays this way.

Customization also ruined Halo for me and I'm not talking about Armor customization, but about Perks, Weapon and Armor Ability customization.

So, for me, a game can have too much customization. If you feel different, then that's fine with me, but don't expect me to like it, because other people like it.

Are you kidding me with this shit?

And this crap:

I like both of these games but I always found the art either off-putting or dull.

Blue lights on your body armor to make sure all enemies can see you from far away... how can anyone come up with such a stupid idea. :(

Playing through FFX HD atm and Tidus pants annoys me to no end. The stupid tribal art and the different leg length... the rest of his clothes are not much better either. The rest of the team is pretty bad aswell. Lulu skirt smh.

Just reinstalled ME3 quickly to confirm it there were any doubts.

Yep, still there
Bioware gonna Bioware.
Edit:

It may be your favorite, but I think it's a awful design. The proportions are just wrong.

I'm really confused, is that camel toe actually in the game? If so WTF Bioware.

T-that's a boy?

I know right. I really enjoyed the character who served as a guest in your main combat party but I started paying more attention and noticed other characters kept referring to him as a he and I just stopped playing the game altogether.

Everything about the Arkham Batman games. From all the dudes looking like jacked up hulk men to Harley Quinn not even looking anything like a clown to the crowded UI with animated bats. All of it looks ugly.

Though it looks like the characters might've slimmed down in the newest game.

It's actually a great design idea. COG is blue, Locusts are RED. It's really helpful in multiplier, where far away character models glow blue or red. It helps to differentiate between the two factions from a design and interaction standpoint, not be realistic.

Danganronpa's art style and designs are the reason why I'm not playing it. It already had the school setting working against it, but the way how the characters look is just too off-putting. It's a shame, because people tell me it's a game I could enjoy.

No thank you.
omg yes this so much

PSO2-Humar-Concept.jpg

PSO2's "everyone looks like a mecha" style really upset me when I saw it, especially when compared to PSO1's more simple style that relied on color to grab attention.

Did not like the addition of more bulk to every design at all.

This is a modern artistic trend I really hate. How all suits of armors have to be really intricate with button clasps, seamed grids and panels. Even with Batman it got overused. It's a reason I jumped for joy after seeing Batman v Superman's Batman design. Clean, simple costume. Over-design, IMO, kills art direction. Give me simple, yet efficient rather than overdesigned tripe. Some artists believe that the more shit you put on a character and their costume, the more "KEWL" it looks. No...no it doesn't. It's all about balance and flow. Some artists know that, sometimes, it's best to leave a design simple. It's an act of restraint to realize a design looks good and to not push it over the edge with clutter.

Every JRPG getup ever.
It's either one of 3 things that bother me:
1. Chibi art design
2. Little kids that wearing rather revealing crap (Creepy as hell too)
3. Pineapple hair shit like this:
9-270px-SOM_Randi.jpg

(granted, this is not a bad design, but I just can't stand it)

I don't think it's bad for the reasons you state. I think that particular design is bad because it adds over-design to the original:

Randi.png

Original is simple, to the point without excess of design clutter. Modern version is...well, modern version(lots of added patterns, added cross-laced portions to the pants, yadda yadda... because that's how you DO "modern" redesigning!).

Do people seriously find this kind of boob physics sexy? It's gross. Looks like they're gonna fall off any minute.
I'd really dig the designs themselves if they were not sexualized this much.

It's not supposed to be sexy. It's supposed to be silly.

I still don't care for it, but it was never intended to turn people on.

I thought Rayman was kind of cute, at last in Rayman 1:
rayman_1_image_13.jpg

Ratchet isn't bad either, not a fan of the others but I don't know why they'd be "upsetting"? Well, nu-Crash does look particularly awful. Looks obnoxious instead of lovably goofy.

It's a pretty low res image, this one was posted above and it's much better.

iygzqyL6OOgGB.png

Composition is much better but it's still difficult to read at a distance with many characters morphing into blobs of black and red or black and white. It's well drawn, but that's a small portion of what goes into a good drawing.

My issue isn't with the resolution of the image but the resolution of the content, and from an illustration point of view the work isn't impressive or interesting to look at.

It has been said, but I've always hated when Castlevania became too anime.

I adored the medieval-ish action hero, almost goth-punk, gritty atmosphere of older Castlevanias.

I thought things like this was a good compromise..

Why is people convinced that Dragon's Crown is serious? Imo everything is exaggerate on purpose to become a joke, like Bayonetta.

Ever heard the saying "Ironic shitposting is still shitposting"?

Games that "satirize" sexual objectification of women in games (e.g. Bayonetta, Dragon's Crown) just reinforce the thing they're trying to be "ironic" about. It's still using sex to sell their product and it's fucking lazy and stupid.

I don't like tons of characters/game art (for example alot of mascot ratchet/spyro/rayman shit is obnoxious to me)

But that's not the question at hand, art like THIS actively upsets me.

Source?

I'm always surprised about the hate towards Japanese games, it makes me wonder because what others see when they see those designs, I've always been into anime and Japanese games so I really enjoy what Japan has to offer.

Just because people are tearing Japanese character design a new one, doesn't mean the entire of Japanese game development is bad. Not only that but this is only for JRPGs which are easily some of the stupidest designs out there. Plus, I guarantee you that a majority of everyone here is playing a Japanese game in form anyway.

I'll defend Bayonetta but not Tidus in terms of design.

Yeah but you're not supposed to take it seriously but instead poke fun at it. It's satire for a reason. Also, sex doesn't sell otherwise Call of Duty would be the worst selling game ever and Bayonetta/Lollipop Chainsaw would have made millions.

Ohhh, I forgot one that really, really, really upset me back in the day (it still does): Kain's design in Blood Omen 2. He went from badass vampire warrior to this effeminate goth idiot straight out of an Anne Rice novel (not to mention they completely ruined his character through that shitty writing as well). I won't even post a picture because I don't want to look at it again.

douche chills

Oh god this. Looks like the losers you would find at a frat house (presumably while preparing to dress up in blackface).

Oh and also, WHAT THE FUCK is up with all their shoes being red at the bottom!?

That's a reference to the recent scandal of that moron Frat House dressing up in Black-face at UCI if you didn't get it.
