So fantasy art has to have a real life analogue now? And someone has already mentioned that there are some belly dancing attires like this.it's shoddy because it doesn't fit with any traditional garb,
Good thing they don't use swords, and are backline support. But hey, realism right? Damned if a character design doesn't strictly follow medieval codes of armor and dress.it's shoddy because that type of clothing exposes the leg, and it makes the clothing less fit, which, if you're using a sword, would be problematic,
No particular design, in the history of visual art, is strictly necessary.it's shoddy because it's unnecessary,
Why does Soma wear some kind of giant coat? Why the fur? Why jeans? He needs to run around fighting vampires and undead. Shouldn't he pack some kind of kevlar?
I don't even know what this means. You do realize that there are no character models in EO right? All you see of the "characters" is their portrait.it's shoddy because it produces needless amount of work, requiring you to make extra art for underwear,
it's shoddy because it looks bad and is unflattering for any character.
I'm almost afraid to ask but... *sigh*... is this actually from a thing?
Yuji Himukai is a good artist.
He can draw feet just fine, this isn't Liefeld we're talking about here.
The thing is, since the characters in EO are just static portraits, he tends to warp their anatomy to make them more dynamic:
Anyway, 6 pages without this monstrosity, GAF is slipping.
Legitimately greatest downgrade in art/design in the entire history of video games.
Furry is not sexual. Those designs count as furry, but that doesn't mean they are bad.
My bad, this is Himukai's work on Persona Q, not the one I posted:Er, that Persona picture is by Soejima, not the Etrian Odyssey guy.
His art is much more precise then the Etrian Odyssey artist.
It's a pretty low res image, this one was posted above and it's much better.

Here's a higher res one.

Jesus Christ, lol.
the modern cartoony style most indie games have. I just find it unattractive to the most

What does this even mean.
Every JRPG getup ever.
It's either one of 3 things that bother me:
1. Chibi art design
2. Little kids that wearing rather revealing crap (Creepy as hell too)
3. Pineapple hair shit like this:

(granted, this is not a bad design, but I just can't stand it)
FFXIV is a MMORPG...as a bard though, that bow/harp hybrid is pretty stupid.
Anyone else think Aiden's hat, mask, and trenchcoat combo looks super tacky and bad?

I seriously have a hard time not laughing every time I see this or the box art image.
He always bugged me because his red bottom shirt made him look like he had a massive beer gut in game.
the way to my heart....
...There... happy?
Vandal Hearts: Flames of Judgment bastardizes Western art and a Japanese IP.

Do people seriously find this kind of boob physics sexy? It's gross. Looks like they're gonna fall off any minute.
I'd really dig the designs themselves if they were not sexualized this much.
I'm curious on that too. It's really a big turn off from the game (and I said the exact same thing a page ago so no, you're not the only one).
I mean the elf isn't bad, hell, the serving girl it's still obnoxious that they're making sure to make the boob physics that important but at least she isn't gross. As you said, those boobs on the sorcerer look like they are going to pop off and it is really gross.
I think though in general the art style is very exaggerated in that game. Not really a fan of the over exaggeration, especially when it comes to the "boobs".

yes, theres a whole subreddit dedicated to it![]()
I firmly believe this is not the audience Kamitani was trying to capture, if for no other reason than that Kamitani is an old Japanese man and probably doesn't use Reddit.
He was just having some silly fun with the designs.
i dont mean a subreddit for dragons crown, i mean a subreddit for the kind of boobs you see in the game but in real life.
Things like "Mature audience will never accept Japanese artists sexualize little girls/underage/youngsters/female characters" is a very weak social justice agenda. If our communist government taught me anything about social justice, it's about social justice is the worst thing on this planet, it's basically nothing but admit how weak your culture/law/national strength is. If you want to achieve social justice, you make a law to forbid, you take the dispute land by force, you arrest hentai manga artists across national boundaries and put them in your jail, in this way you can tell the world "this is fucking bad and should go to hell", this is how social justice being served, not using agendas to encourage censorship or witch hunt.

The World Ends With You is a pretty great exception I'm planning to get soonLast gen's JRPGs had some really generic medieval designs that had no cohesion at all. Each shot is from a different game.

All of these characters look so interchangeable. There's no sense of connection between their art style. If I showed you characters from FFIV, FFVI, and FFVII you can easily see that each game has its own unique design even though they are from the same gaming series.
T-that's a boy?I don't mind pretty boy characters, variety is the spice of life and all that, but this was too pretty. Even his voice was light. It's disturbing.
I could post several dozen examples but you only need to open Google play/app store on your phone or tablet to see what I mean. This shit is just...ugh... it elicits a really bad reaction that I can't quite put my finger on.
It just seems to embody everything bad about casual mobile gaming. I get upset when I see it and I get outright depressed when I ponder how some legitimate developers are embracing a future where it's even MORE popular.
It's the software you used to see on a miscellaneous cart in some corner of an office supply store or J.C. PENNY. Those games that come in CD jewel cases and have names like "Mystery House 1 and 2" or "Hidden Aztec Adventure"
Still, sometimes I wonder where that style came from and how it came to be so popular among certain types of devs.

Facebook.
Judging from many posts in this thread, no wonder Japanese games aren't doing too well in the west?
Apparently it is. I think you'll find that most people (non-gamers particular) don't really give two flips about art style and as long as it doesn't look offputting they might give it a shot. It's just part of the ecosystem in appstores and Facebook. If you walked into Best Buy you'll see a shelf of photorealism box art covers, because this is the kind of packaging that appeals to the kind of people who go to Best Buy for their games. Is this kind of art style even attractive to anybody?
This is another part of it. When you're an indie developer, you can't afford to spend thousands of man hours on 5000 polygon models. If you're deploying to mobile/web platforms, you want to hit the widest audience possible which means very cheap (in terms of resource consumption), simplistic graphics. Is that just super cheap to produce?
