Video game art/designs that just upset you.

Almost every anime/manga mod on Nexus for Skyrim (FNV, F3...).

Just a few randomly picked "top" pictures...

it's shoddy because it doesn't fit with any traditional garb,
So fantasy art has to have a real life analogue now? And someone has already mentioned that there are some belly dancing attires like this.

it's shoddy because that type of clothing exposes the leg, and it makes the clothing less fit, which, if you're using a sword, would be problematic,
Good thing they don't use swords, and are backline support. But hey, realism right? Damned if a character design doesn't strictly follow medieval codes of armor and dress.

it's shoddy because it's unnecessary,
No particular design, in the history of visual art, is strictly necessary.
Why does Soma wear some kind of giant coat? Why the fur? Why jeans? He needs to run around fighting vampires and undead. Shouldn't he pack some kind of kevlar?

Here's why: Because it looks cool. It's there to appeal, to sell, not to be some sort of commentary on what vampire fighting gear should look like.

it's shoddy because it produces needless amount of work, requiring you to make extra art for underwear,
I don't even know what this means. You do realize that there are no character models in EO right? All you see of the "characters" is their portrait.

it's shoddy because it looks bad and is unflattering for any character.

Seems okay. You're kind of throwing an entire dance culture under the bus with this kind of statement.

Yuji Himukai is a good artist.

He can draw feet just fine, this isn't Liefeld we're talking about here.

The thing is, since the characters in EO are just static portraits, he tends to warp their anatomy to make them more dynamic:

Anyway, 6 pages without this monstrosity, GAF is slipping.

Legitimately greatest downgrade in art/design in the entire history of video games.

Er, that Persona picture is by Soejima, not the Etrian Odyssey guy.

His art is much more precise then the Etrian Odyssey artist.

My bad, this is Himukai's work on Persona Q, not the one I posted:

Never got more upset about "art/designs" than the reveal of what Quarians looked like under their mask with Tali reveal....

UnmaskedTali.jpg

Any kind of bikini/skimpy "armour"
Anything with boobplate
Any kind of sexualized underage girl
Any kind of boobs-and-butt pose
Modern/non-classic Sonic (only Genesis-era design is real) and Knuckles
Zero Suit Samus with her high heels

I'm not a fan of the generic angry space marines or anything but I wouldn't say it "upsets" me. I just find it kind of boring. The above list, though, does genuinely irritate the shit out of me.

"Modern cartoony style"

What does this even mean.

Not enough photorealistic dudebros, obviously.

Anyone else think Aiden's hat, mask, and trenchcoat combo looks super tacky and bad?

I seriously have a hard time not laughing every time I see this or the box art image.

Hate this design. It's like they wanted to make a character so that 8 year olds wouldn't worry they're playing a childish game.

Do people seriously find this kind of boob physics sexy? It's gross. Looks like they're gonna fall off any minute.
I'd really dig the designs themselves if they were not sexualized this much.

yes, theres a whole subreddit dedicated to it :o

I'm curious on that too. It's really a big turn off from the game (and I said the exact same thing a page ago so no, you're not the only one ;) ).

I mean the elf isn't bad, hell, the serving girl it's still obnoxious that they're making sure to make the boob physics that important but at least she isn't gross. As you said, those boobs on the sorcerer look like they are going to pop off and it is really gross.

I think though in general the art style is very exaggerated in that game. Not really a fan of the over exaggeration, especially when it comes to the "boobs".

it's ok to say you don't like it, but to say something subjective as tastes "is bad" is a slippery slope.

I firmly believe this is not the audience Kamitani was trying to capture, if for no other reason than that Kamitani is an old Japanese man and probably doesn't use Reddit.

He was just having some silly fun with the designs.

i dont mean a subreddit for dragons crown, i mean a subreddit for the kind of boobs you see in the game but in real life. i was responding to the idea that the poster cant believe someone would like it (which there are), even though we know subjectively the game is not going for a specific fetish audience, but a gross exageration of anatomy as its art direction.

it's just the typical route when DC gets posted of "OMG, forget all those other exagerated bodyparts, only BOOBS offend me"

Things like "Mature audience will never accept Japanese artists sexualize little girls/underage/youngsters/female characters" is a very weak social justice agenda. If our communist government taught me anything about social justice, it's about social justice is the worst thing on this planet, it's basically nothing but admit how weak your culture/law/national strength is. If you want to achieve social justice, you make a law to forbid, you take the dispute land by force, you arrest hentai manga artists across national boundaries and put them in your jail, in this way you can tell the world "this is fucking bad and should go to hell", this is how social justice being served, not using agendas to encourage censorship or witch hunt.

wat

It doesn't upset me, but I'm not comfortable with it. I think either Kojima's justification for doing this is going to explode in his face in a bad way once the game is out, or it's just going to blow up in a bad way once the game is out.

He has a justification for it it is claimed, so I will wait and see what that is, but...

Controversy ahoy.

It's kind of sad for me really. The artstyle is pretty great and a display of actual talent IMO (I'd love the Sorcerer design if she had proportional breasts), and I'd probably be interested in this game, but whenever I come across gifs like these I'm like "eh, not my kind of party".

I don't really have a problem with exaggeration as such, I think it can lead to a game looking much better than the average "realistic" stuff. I generally believe that an artist is free to do whatever they want and they're free to draw boobs as big as they please; it's up to the audience to decide whether they like it or not.

Last gen's JRPGs had some really generic medieval designs that had no cohesion at all. Each shot is from a different game.

All of these characters look so interchangeable. There's no sense of connection between their art style. If I showed you characters from FFIV, FFVI, and FFVII you can easily see that each game has its own unique design even though they are from the same gaming series.
The World Ends With You is a pretty great exception I'm planning to get soon

Bayonetta is a a good example of bad design imo. Her design in Bayonetta 2 is actually a lot better in my opinion, hair looked really really weird to me

Which is a problem I have with a bunch of characters. There's a certain limit Im fine with or like, such as the average spiky-haired male protagonist or something similar, but the characters with odds strands of hair that had to have a mountain of gel ad gravity defying powers really bother me
Quite a few FF characters fit this description.

Additionally, the generic marines bother me a bunch as well.

I could post several dozen examples but you only need to open Google play/app store on your phone or tablet to see what I mean. This shit is just...ugh... it elicits a really bad reaction that I can't quite put my finger on.

It just seems to embody everything bad about casual mobile gaming. I get upset when I see it and I get outright depressed when I ponder how some legitimate developers are embracing a future where it's even MORE popular.

It's the software you used to see on a miscellaneous cart in some corner of an office supply store or J.C. PENNY. Those games that come in CD jewel cases and have names like "Mystery House 1 and 2" or "Hidden Aztec Adventure"

I fully agree with you there. Luckily, it's rare to see that kind of style on games that are actually worthwhile, so it's an indicator of what can be safely ignored. Still, sometimes I wonder where that style came from and how it came to be so popular among certain types of devs.

I just realized, it took until PAGE 7 to get t Morta Kombat and Netherealm female characters

And some of you are generalizing jrpgs too much. Not the ones posting bad jrpg art, because it definitely exists, but stuff like this

Every JRPG getup ever.
It's either one of 3 things that bother me:
1. Chibi art design
2. Little kids that wearing rather revealing crap (Creepy as hell too)
3. Pineapple hair shit like this:
9-270px-SOM_Randi.jpg

(granted, this is not a bad design, but I just can't stand it)

doesn't give credit to good jrpg designs/art styles, like TWEWY's

which I find fantastic

Facebook.

That doesn't really explain it. What I meant was more along the lines of: Is this kind of art style even attractive to anybody? Is that just super cheap to produce? Did something that used that art style accidentally became popular and everybody has imitated it since then to recapture that "glory"? If that is the case, did that even have anything to do with the art? etc.

Edit: Well. I suppose it does answer the "where" part. Just not in as much detail as I would like.

Judging from many posts in this thread, no wonder Japanese games aren't doing too well in the west?

I'm always surprised about the hate towards Japanese games, it makes me wonder because what others see when they see those designs, I've always been into anime and Japanese games so I really enjoy what Japan has to offer.

Is this kind of art style even attractive to anybody?
Apparently it is. I think you'll find that most people (non-gamers particular) don't really give two flips about art style and as long as it doesn't look offputting they might give it a shot. It's just part of the ecosystem in appstores and Facebook. If you walked into Best Buy you'll see a shelf of photorealism box art covers, because this is the kind of packaging that appeals to the kind of people who go to Best Buy for their games.

Is that just super cheap to produce?
This is another part of it. When you're an indie developer, you can't afford to spend thousands of man hours on 5000 polygon models. If you're deploying to mobile/web platforms, you want to hit the widest audience possible which means very cheap (in terms of resource consumption), simplistic graphics.

I usually don't mind most art styles, but I absolutely loathe the style of Borderlands. So much so that I can't bring myself to play it. I guess it's because they were originally trying to make it more realistic but then opted out for the cartoony look, though the realistic look was much better.

Why is people convinced that Dragon's Crown is serious? Imo everything is exaggerate on purpose to become a joke, like Bayonetta.

And honestly i don't think that the resemblance with Fujiko Mine is casual
