Often overlooked, and sadly didn't receive enough support by Sony. Despite that, they still hold a steady cult following and still to this day are being used by many players around the world. New and old. This is the official GAF community thread to discuss all things Vita and PSP.

PlayStation Portable (PSP)

The PlayStation Portable (PSP) is a handheld game console developed and marketed by Sony Computer Entertainment. It was first released in Japan on December 12, 2004, in North America on March 24, 2005, and in PAL regions on September 1, 2005, and is the first handheld instalment in the PlayStation line of consoles. As a seventh generation console it competed with the Nintendo DS.

PlayStation Vita

The PlayStation Vita (PS Vita or Vita) is a handheld video game console developed and marketed by Sony Computer Entertainment. It was first released in Japan on December 17, 2011, and in North America, Europe, and other international territories beginning on February 22, 2012. The console is the successor to the PlayStation Portable, and a part of the PlayStation brand of gaming devices; as part of the eighth generation of video game consoles, it primarily competed with the Nintendo 3DS.

I only had my PSP briefly but I loved playing Vice City Stories and The Warriors. All of the Rockstar games were pretty fun on PSP from memory. Decently long games, with plenty to do.

I never had a Vita, although I heard the exclusive Uncharted game was pretty impressive for portable.

I go back and forth between the handhelds (PSP/Vita and 3DS). Lately, it as been many a Picross and Pocket Jockey sessions on the Nintendo hardware but this thread is making me want to charge up the Vita and give it some love.

With the PSP, there are so many RPGs that I still need to get around to playing. It really is a great piece of hardware with that beautiful screen (both but the Vita’s screen is really nice).

I got myself a vita last year just to play through Golden Abyss and I ended up discovering so many great games, not to mention full psp BC and now GTA SA in the palm of my hands, it's definitely my favorite handheld.

I had a PS Vita with a couple games (Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed, Uncharted: Golden Abyss, Uncharted: Fight for Fortune, Unit 13, Dokuro, and Gravity Rush). I was disappointed that we never got an original GTA game or another proper MotorStorm like Arctic Edge for the PSP/PS2. I did try the MotorStorm RC demo but I disliked the top-down camera and it was boring.

I'm actually putting down gaming at the moment. I sold my PS4, so not going to be doing a lot of it right now. The Vita still a bit too pricey for me at the moment, especially when I'll not be fully committing to it.

I would definitely love to play it at some point. Vita or Switch Lite would be great in the future. Especially for more casual play.

I did hack my Vita for English Patches of Translations but have still bought my Japanese games to patch them in the first place.

Mine currently has the Start/Select button being faulty, so I can either try and fix it or buy another one. My Battery still worked afaik as I kept checking on it.

7th Dragon 2020 and Nayuta no Kiseki are amazing games with Patches. Try and get those games when you can!

Had a PSP, ended up selling it after replacing the screen as didn't use it much.

Mate had one too and used to bring it to the local pub (free wi-fi) to look up and order prostitutes.

Bizarre use for it but he was a a weirdo.

Typically the kind of experience I hate on handheld consoles.

I had a PSP, and I still have a Vita. I love my Vita, it is a great console, the last great handheld in my opinion. It could still get games today and be perfectly relevant. We don't need more power than this for handheld consoles honestly.

Resolution was not well suited for current games though. 544 lines is not a good fit for all the indy pixel-art games.

I always thought it would have been dope to have for the remote play feature with PS4. Did you ever use it?

It's a shame Sony likely won't dip their feet in to handheld again after the Vita, but who knows. It just doesn't seem as profitable for them, despite having a steady cult following.

Like f@ck do they....I has a sniff around on the store last night and the majority of the games are still shockingly expensive for a machine that's near as dammit dead.
The whole Vita story is just one massive example of cluelessness on Sony's part. Great machine though.
The new web PSN store is all kinds of terrible now. I'm not sure why they made it so simple/basic and removed features. The older ones was leagues better.

Never owned a psp or vita, but do own a pstv. It's how I played persona 4 golden and persona 3 portable. If I was into jrpgs back then like I am now, I probably would've picked up both systems.

No. I can't feel comfortable playing Third Person and First Person Action Games with the ergonomics of a handheld. Others are okay with this though, so they might have a good experience.
I'd probably be the same, in all honesty. Especially when it comes to first person. It's why I wouldn't bother with a game like Overwatch on Nintendo Switch, it likely would make me feel nauseous.

I installed Patapon 2 on my Vita recently as I never got around to playing it. Been great so far. I also need to play Gravity Rush on it that I got via PS Plus years ago.

I have my vita lying around. Now that I'm actually making some money maybe I should finally buy a goddam memory card for it. The one I have is only 4gb but with more space I could carry around a decent gaming library.
I'm itching for some RPG's right now. Maybe will replay FF Tactics WOTL.

The used Vita game market is still cheap if you can find what you want.
Just 2 weeks ago I picked up 8 Vita games for under $100.
PlayAsia just re-released/reprinted some more Vita games too

Muramasa Rebirth

Gundam Breaker 3 Break Edition

Soul Sacrifice Delta

SD Gundam G Generation Genesis

God of War Collection

All excellent games

These games right here are why you wanted a PSP if you were a Japanese RPG fan of the late 2000s (2009 to 2012).

Honestly, it's a shame that some of them were not translated for the West, that it had to be localised by fans themselves!

Honourable mentions would be Phantasy Star Portable 2, Disgaea 1/2, Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together and Gungnir as well. Should try Jane De'Arc and Wild Arms XF at one point.

DESTROYA DESTROYA if you can still get it cheap, Oreshika is another one you must get before it skyrockets in price as it's an Asian English exclusive and was handled by XDEV (Sony's UK Third Party Relations branch). It's hard as nails though!
