Vox: Bernie Sanders is the Democrats’ real 2020 frontrunner

I'm not really worried about him being too old. Like are people worried he doesn't have the mental faculties to do the job? Or are they more worried he'll die while in office?

It's all of the above for me. It's the most stressful job in the world. Average life expectancy for a man in the US is 78 years. Your mind degrades over time, its just a fact. Unless we get some nanomachines in the next couple years its a horrible idea.

He's still a fan favorite and was a solid player, but there's always younger players waiting to take your spot on the team. It's impressive how long of a career he's had in the league.

The real problem for democrats is that he's like a cult leader and these people who follow him religiously are going to have to be appeased so they actually get to the polls.
One thing Dems need to do going forward is follow the Bush/Cheney approach to VP selection. Pick someone older who's not interested in running in 8 years (and don't directly support a successor like Obama did), because we've run into the same issues w/ the Gore and Hillary campaigns where insurgent candidates have appeared (Bradley '00, Sanders '16) and enthusiasm is way down.

If Bernie gets to be the Democrat candidate for 2020 elections, get ready for another Republican in the White House for another 4 years. Dude is too old.

Democrats should try and find another young person. A young person that follows what Obama and Sanders want to do.

And no, Biden neither; he is also too old.

Dear US, stop nominating/electing elderly people for the highest ranking positions. I am sure there are capable and willing people in their prime ready for the job.

And a person appearing to be much younger and acting much younger says nothing. Every year can be a turning point. Ageing and all it's accompanied risks (emphasis on risks) are a biological fact nobody escapes ultimately, especially not when in their 80's.

It's amazing how "too old" is applicable here, but "too dumb", "too offensive", "too inexperienced" didn't kill off Trump's chances. People should get their priorities straight.

He's got a lot of support, but he's also going to be super old and a fair number of Democrats just can't stand him. I hope he runs again, but I also hope other people run against him and we have better choices this time around.

This is one way for Trump to win 4 more years I guess.

On the (twisted) fun side the debates will be practically the Muppets old guys.

I'd vote from r him over trump of course but I'd rather he stayed out. Don't really want to deal with his silly cultists next primary and I'd also like my candidate to fight for minority votes because they are the backbone of this party.

Someone young and fresh. Preferably under 40. At least some government experience, local or higher, or actually successful business experience.

Though last election shows that you can have no experience and generally be a failure in life and yet only need to make fart noises with your mouth to be a candidate and win.

One of those things are sure to kill you without fail, or at least gravely affect you physical and mental health.

Also, Trump supporters wanted those three things.

My mother would make a better president. No one cares about "good enough", sadly. They just need someone inspiring.

You have to be good to inspire. Right now we should be looking at ways to stop the right. Bunt here... double there... Squeeze something in. Instead it feels like we're looking for a based loaded home run before we get anyone on base.

We have plenty of good candidates not named Elizabeth Warren, Joe Biden, or Bernie Sanders. All will be too old. (Hillary was too old as well this cycle.)

You just don't know them. And this is a good thing because historically Dems win w/ younger candidates fresh to the national consciousness.

I was responding to the poster who had names and also mentioned the bench.

If your complaint is that Democrats lack blind party loyalty, you're absolutely right.

If your complaint is that they actually try to apply standards for leadership, you're right that they do, and wrong that it's a problem.

Difference being Republicans always turn out and vote for their candidate regardless of some purity test nonsense. It's not even a standard. They just always vote.

I still remember the woman who was interviewed by Daily Show during the primaries.

"Im a conservative, Trump is a jackass, but if he's the GOP ticket, so be it".

DON'T put him as the nomination. DO encourage younger democratic socialist candidates for a real change against wishy-washy-want-good-social-change-while-droning-innocents liberals.

You say that like it is the same people saying that. Trump is too old as well, and cannot even formulate proper sentences anymore. Just watch an old interview where Trump actually can talk relatively normal to see some of the effects of ageing.

But all the younger democratic socialist candidates are too busy retweeting Louise Mensch to run for office.

I honestly hope he retires and elevates someone younger in his place. He is way too fucking old.

This. Who in the Dem party believes what Bernie believes and is riding his wave of success? I don't see anyone. Gotta be someone in their 50s with a left enough bent and passion for the people who can be the representative.

Unfortunately, I think the Dems are fucked, which means we're fucked. Hoping the Dems turn out in 2018 to get Congress back is really our best hope of any short-term stoppage of the damage Trump is doing, but for chrissakes if they don't get someone who can rally the people behind them, we're gonna get 4 more years of the orange turd stain.

Im talking about some young person with the same opinions and likability as him.

I know what you meant, people have been talking about mythical young Bernies that will run for president since last year. I'm saying people will start campaigning for the 2020 elections in less than a year. If such a person existed they would be known by now. Presidential candidates don't pop out of nowhere.

Heaven forbid my concern be about the effect of age on the duties of the office. This is about more than electability

Wouldn't it be better for all involved if he encouraged a spiritual successor of a younger age to run? Especially considering nobody knows how the story with his wife will end.
