Was Breath of the Wild graphically downgraded?

Do you think Breath of the Wild was downgraded from the initial reveal?

It certainly would be really helpful if someone managed to record footage of the same areas shown in the 2014 trailer
I agree I hope its still there
Video we have now of tall grass and plains in the final version can be found here and here.
Thing in these videos also is how the camera is now in a normal playing spot. You can see with the grass how they cheated in the 2014 trailer to pan the camera all the way back. You never get to see the very bottom of the grass like you do in the actual gameplay camera settings.

Everything. The grass, the mountains in the distance, etc. etc.
You have to be joking

So?
Just show the games when they're completed. This thing of showing prerendered target footage of games that might not even launch the same generation is dumb. And showing yanky barren aplha version footage is dumb too.

It would be better if all games were shown in an Apple "oh, one more thing..." kind of way. I really don't need to know what I might get to play 3-5 years from now if everything goes to plan.

I agree.

Lol its hilarious that some people give nintendo a pass while companies like ubisoft develop the worst types of reputations for this type of thing. I dont personally care and i understand why companies do it.. I also think BoTW still looks great despite that 2014 trailer looking slighty more polished.

Yes it clearly was but it shouldn't be shocking for a game that was announced way too early and ended up being developed for a new and completely different platform as well.
In 2014 they were just doing open world tests/experiments and of course they wanted to impress people with their premiere footage, then they had to make an actual game out of their vision. In motion it still looks fine.

Ok be disappointed. How will that change the laws of physics?

It won't. Should we not care about stuff that we can't directly affect?

Did I say it looks just "good enough?"

It looks good enough to you; it looks good to you. Whatever. It doesn't look good enough to me. I don't ONLY care about graphics, which is why I'm still buying the game, but I won't say I'm not disappointed. (Although, I've at least accepted by now that it looks the way it does.)

Edit: I feel like I should say I don't think the game looks BAD. Oftentimes I really like the art style.

I mean some of the game definitely looks rough in areas, but there has also been some footage where the game doesn't look that far off from the 2014 footage. Overall it does seem like there has been a downgrade, but I don't think it is crazy significant..

Yeah it was downgraded, but the 2014 trailer always felt like bullshot to me. There was no way for the Wii U to get those kind of visuals in a big open world.

Then you get people complaining that they have nothing to show (i.e. the last two EA press conferences).
It doesn't matter. Retro Studio hasn't shown anything at all for years, we still know that they're working on something and that it'll probably be great no matter what it is.
Check my edit at the last post about the PS4 situation, there were games shown at the PS4 unveil that got us hyped up for PS4 that we'll probably play on PS4 Pro or PS5 instead.

That was 100% bullshot. When I heard the "it was in engine!" comment I immediately thought of Uncharted 4 reveal... We all know how that turned out.

That depends on whether or not the original trailer was ever stated to be representative of game play. All trailers of game play have been consistent. I remember Nintendo saying the original trailer was what they were aiming for and the assets were made in engine, but not that it was directly game footage.

For a game that's bigger than Skyrim, has probably some of the smartest AI of any open world game, varying weather affects, an extensive physics engine and is running on hardware not that much powerful than the Xbox 360 if that, what the hell's your bar for good enough?

Wow, is that a thing? Any examples?

Edited with second picture. Notice how the 2017 version has a better draw distance.

Isn't the camera closer in 2016 version so the crass can be seen better because of it's draw distance? I mean I think thats the possibility. Also in every other metric the 2017 looks better. And the time of day and light might effect the visibility of the crass.

The 2014 trailer

Yup. "We'll see..." was my gut reaction. And Uncharted 4 was supposedly in-engine AND 60fps lol. I remember talking to my PC gamer friends and showing the trailer and they just laughed at me "yeah right!". Can't even play the game looking and running like that on the upgraded hardware.
Honestly, why is this even legal if it tricks someone to buy a console to play a game they won't ever get to play in that state?

WOW I was just thinking about making this thread yesterday but I was afraid GAF might tear me apart XD
Anyways, I think it is more of a bullshot now that I'm looking at it carefully.

the 2014 reveal was probably a target render that was used to inspire the development.

I never thought it would look like that since there is no Wii U games that look anywhere close to that good.

But they got pretty close.

I'm actually surprised this hasn't been a bigger deal. Feels like only a few years back where a game having minor downgrades became a massive issue around here

Second picture also shows that you don't need tons of grass to make games look great - the stylistic choice to reduce the grass to make the ground look more cohesive as a whole is better.

Flat, washed out ground textures are better than dense grass that moves in the wind ?

Ok.

Wow massive downgrade! no wonder, the specs of the switch are terrible. if this would have been Ubisoft the outcry would be huge, but because its Nintendo the Fanboys come out in full force to defend this shitty practice!

I can't help but read this like a Trump tweet.

This must be bait.

I honestly can't tell on GAF these days.

He actively looks at the bomb on the ground and deliberately avoids it. Not even Fallout 4 or the Witcher really does that.
Lol
My brother made that type of AI in a top-down racing game on the Amiga 500 where the cars avoided each other and raced around user-created tracks fully unscripted competing with each other and the player. This was in the late 80s on 7Mhz of insane computer power ;)
