Was Breath of the Wild graphically downgraded?

the poster said that breath of the wild was revealed when they showed someone play on a tv, i assume he is refering when aounuma and miyamoto showed it at the game awards, and thats not fucking true.

This is from E3 2015 first time showing someone playing it. They record using a camera instead of showing your the actual live feed or recorded gameplay.

And this is from the better earlier build with better looking effects, such can be seen in the grass.

I just watched the reveal video and didn't find anything that explicitly said "this is in-game footage". To be fair to your point, they also didn't explicitly say that it was target footage either.

people were skeptical because of the jump Link does, but it was revealed at the game awards that link can actually make that jump from the horse

also they obviously used developer camera to capture the footage

That seems to tie things up rather nicely then. Doesn't really affect my perception of the game overall though.
 
I called on this "downgrade thread" a few weeks ago.

Gaf never disappoints when it comes to shitty thread with little to zero content to discuss but lots of bullshit pages to come.The "downgrade thread" is the masterpiece of these threads, the one that always has the same content (especially before release) and leds to an endless and meaningless debate with little facts.

Hopefully some people are debunking these biased comparisons and lack of technical knowledge about the process of making games (funny in an harcore video game forum)

Can't wait to see the most shitty comparisons when the game is out though, it's going to be absolutely marvelous. Some already made Zelda VERY BAD again.

You're right.
It looks exactly the same, of not better than the original 2014 trailer.
The subsequent 3 years of footage was meant nothing.
 
I don't know, maybe. Who cares? Games usually don't look as good as they do in the early footage.

Not a big deal for me, it didn't bother me with Watch_Dogs or Dark Souls 2.

Game was definitely downgraded visually but I got over it. At least the downgrade wasn't Ubisoft bad.

The game looks like it has a lot to offer in terms of gameplay and world. As for my visual fix, I'll also be playing Horizon: Zero Dawn on PS4/4K next week. Both games will be awesome!
 
The game looks great for the hardware it's on, but it clearly doesn't look anywhere near as good as the reveal trailer. That was a target render/CG and it's clear. I think saying this isn't downgraded is just as ridiculous as saying The Witcher 3 wasn't. Again, it matters little since it still looks great and I expect the game to be amazing.
 
Yes it's downgraded from the target render trailer, but anyone why thought that would be possible on the WiiU also had really unrealistic expectations. No matter what Aonuma said about it being actual gameplay. Yes they deserve to be called out on it, but comparing this rare situation for Nintendo to every single time Ubisoft did this, for the past ten years now or so now, seems like an unfair comparison.
 
I am super confused by some of the responses ITT. BOTW is my most anticipated game at the moment, but after WD, I though most on GAF were really a stickler for this kind of thing...? Most Ubisoft threads would have you believe that anyway.

I mean, let's be real, because the situations are similar. WD's initial reveal was insanely ambitious and obviously target footage, as the game was years off. Every subsequent reveal in the years, months, weeks prior to release showed that this fidelity was not going to be in the final product. Shit, there were hours of prerelease footage that showed exactly what you'd be getting. I bought WD day one and knew exactly how it was going to look, which was pretty much how it looked in gameplay showings from a year prior.

I'm seeing the same thing here. Target footage has obviously not been met, but we know what we're getting.

If there are two situations where games have not lived up to their initial reveals, a fact obvious from extensive, representative prelease footage, can someone explain the difference?
 
Yes. Graphics are the wheel/tires size* of the Gaming industry.

*Peter Schreyer once said a car designer first compromise is wheel/tires size.

Seriously nobody expected those graphics from PS4 really? Those physics still ahead one gen or 1.5
 
It looks different, to be sure but I love the art style, the atmospheric effects, effect of weather - all of these make the game more interesting and realistic. If the game had to take a graphical hit to incorporate all of this, so be it - it doesn't detract from it's beauty in any way (for me at least).

Don't mind the downgrade in the environment, it's the change of color tunes and added piss filter that annoy me the most. Game's choice of colors and bloom is just awful now.

The game can display a certain number of things. The way places are paced respects that. That trailer was not possible to begin with as it was cumulating 10 places in one. So it's not relevant of what the game could ever display..

Ha so when a threads asks a question and your answer is no you should not entering it.

The outrage that happened over Watch Dogs was something to behold compared to this here.

Aonuma said it was gameplay, therefor it was downgraded. Playing with words to not have this count when other games count only works if you have a history of not ever caring about it or defending companies for this.

Which is absolutely fine, but this is the tactic that people went apeshit over when Guerilla, Ubi, Naughty Dog or CD Projekt Red did it.
 
I am still very much looking forward to playing Breath of the Wild when it is released on the 3rd but this shit absolutely needs to be called out, just as we do for Ubisoft. Not for the initial trailer but for lying to us and saying that it was captured directly from gameplay which was obviously untrue.
It's the same as that Killzone 2 reveal trailer and that led to a lot of backlash if I'm not mistaken. Nintendo gets no free pass from me.

The real question is why publishers aren't accountable for what basically is false advertising. Don't show your games if you are going to downgrade them.

It's not a defense, it's a correction. They never called it "gameplay" afaik. They said it was made in the game engine and it was pretty widely accepted that it was essentially a cutscene.

Most downgradeton threads are about in game (ie someone controlling the game on screen) footage changing dramatically.

If we start saying the first pre-rendered footage (ie Trailers) counts as the baseline for graphical fidelity, then pretty much every game ever released has received a massive "downgrade".


But explain them "playing" the build they showed in that off cam video. It had the same graphics

I'll give them Watch_Dogs because they might've expected more powerful hardware because the systems weren't finalized yet by the time. But even now they're still doing it with stuff like The Division, Rainbow Six Siege and more. Those weren't all just target renders, they're usually advertising as that being what the game will actually look like. And every time they act like they're caught with their pants down and deny it all and play the "graphics don't matter" card.
 
We have seen tons of gameplay and trailers for the game so far. Doesn't it feel odd that none of it seems anywhere as good as that the old footage? btw, I don't think I've seen a downgrade as bad as this, except maybe Killzone 2.

I agree. It was very unlike Nintendo. It's a bummer BOTW isn't that pretty but it still has angles where it looks amazing and I'm so grateful for the new approach that I can accept the misleading first impression of the graphical side of the game
 
While I anticipate things will not live up to the initial in engine stuff people are also going well out of our way to compare different scenes not even in the same areas and screaming downgrade. Not every single area of the game needs 10 million blades of grass on the screen.

They have kept us in the same small region for the last 2 years. Small teases of areas outside the plateau certainly show lots of grass etc. Running out of the initial cave all the grass is there then for some reason which could be artistic or otherwise it changes at the edge of the cliff.

Seems like we should wait until we can actually compare shots across areas teased to start the torches and pitchforks
