Was Breath of the Wild graphically downgraded?

Do you think Breath of the Wild was downgraded from the initial reveal?

Original showing was a target render.

That's an attempt to show what the final game may look like while trying to advertise and get fans excited.

Sometimes you hit it, sometimes you exceed it, sometimes you come up short.

That's the point of a "target" render though.

Your post has too many words. How would you score the open world artstyle of BotW?
3/5 insider post. 5/5 - signifies it is highly recommended and among the best.

I avoid breaking down the overall number score I give games into number scores for individual components of games such as graphics, music and sfx, "replayability", and whatever other category magazines did.

The only thing that bothers me really is that insanely hazy look it suddenly has. I'm just hoping that's some sort of weather/environment effect.

Also tbh I don't feel the downgrade is that heavy, the only real difference I noticed was the density of the vegetation, but I feel that was largely due to them choosing a very strategic camera angle and map location.

looks to be slightly but I expect that (sadly) given all the reveals... it's just an industry thing to do I guess. Switch is not a powerful console so I can't expect the visual fidelity to be mind blowing and the art style certainly helps cover it up.

I do worry that so far pretty much all of the hand on impressions have been in the great plateau. Is Nintendo simply hiding the rest of the game due to spoilers, or is it because they are less impressive?

I would say that it is 100% clear that they don't wanna spoil anything. We never saw gameplay from the desert, death mountain, the towns and so on...from the trailer you can already say that they arent any less impressive than the great plateau.

Ehh it's not like it's not in other places of the game. The game has plenty of foliage.

Right, and I'm glad it's there. But that's not my point. What I was expressing was my preference for the grass density and accompanying gradated "stippling" detail present in the build shown less than a year ago. Given the fact that build was not so far in the past, I was a bit more hopeful those elements would not be removed as part of the downgrade. No deflections or "Eh.."-style rationalizations/hand-waving necessary.

Because we all know that they do that in the game all the time. Not.

They do most of the time? What do you mean? Most open world games use exaggerated atmospheric haze to hide LoD (see Horizon for a recent example of this on much better HW).
If you put a slight haze in the foreground, too, it'll look less jarring.

Video we have now of tall grass and plains in the final version can be found here and here.

After watching these two videos I'd say the screenshot comparisons in this thread showing off a "superior" reveal footage compared to 2017 footage are pretty exaggerated (the 2017 image is shit compared to how it actually looks!). The original may have had slightly better IQ but the game as it stands now is just gorgeous.

That was 100% bullshot. When I heard the "it was in engine!" comment I immediately thought of Uncharted 4 reveal... We all know how that turned out.

Pretty much, yeah, was funny tho to see people bring up Zelda U whenever there was a PS4/XONE game not running at 1080p like "Look at what Nintendo can do with much weaker hardware at 1080p".

I didn't believe for a second that this is what we're going to get on WiiU and I have to say for what it's worth, my expectations were lower than how the game actually ended up looking on WiiU.

I´m mighty happy that they didn´t.
I want to go in as clueless as possible.

Forget it. I misread it. Sorry about that. :)

It's unfortunate to see a mod who's blatantly a Nintendo fan. Sad.
After the incessant concern trolling that was allowed to go unabated in Switch threads the last two months, if there actually was a Nintendo fanboy in the mod team, half of the user list would be greyed out by now.

it bothers me that there are platforms right now that can run it looking exactly like that but were forced to make this compromise to play it on the go

Now you know how PC gamers feel when they see PS4 or Xbone exclusives. It's not a big deal really. You just play it where you can.

Did Nintendo ever say that this trailer represented in-game footage? I was always under the impression that it was just meant to be a tone-piece. Honestly, aside from the upgraded look, I'm surprised at how much of that trailer seems to ring true for the final product.

I definitely agree that it's lame of companies to show us "reveal" trailers that don't fully represent the game, but it doesn't really get to me.

What are the chances the retail build will have AA of some sort implemented? I ask because my first-ever 4K HDR display is on its way via USPS, and I'm not sure how a game running at 900p with no AA implementation is going to look on its screen.

I don't understand. Did you actually expect all of that moving grass at that draw distance to be rendered at 1080p on a Wii U, a machine approximately the power of a PS360, especially at that IQ? Did the other first party games released not give you a keen insight on the limitations of the console? Mario Kart 8 at 720p with no AA?

In-Engine does not mean On Actual Hardware.

Nope. I don't think a single Nintendo game on Wii had any form of AA. Your only hope for a high resolution AA enabled solution is that CemU runs the Wii U version without issues.

Seeing offscreen footage, I think Nintendo's capture feeds are hot garbage. It makes everything look hazier and less colorful than it actually is.

I called on this "downgrade thread" a few weeks ago.

Gaf never disappoints when it comes to shitty thread with little to zero content to discuss but lots of bullshit pages to come. The "downgrade thread" is the masterpiece of these threads, the one that always has the same content (especially before release) and leds to an endless and meaningless debate with little facts.

Hopefully some people are debunking these biased comparisons and lack of technical knowledge about the process of making games (funny in an harcore video game forum)

Can't wait to see the most shitty comparisons when the game is out though, it's going to be absolutely marvelous. Some already made Zelda VERY BAD again.

Iirc they stated that it was actual gameplay.

It's going to look a mess, some people that got the chance to play zelda at a recent event said they also had it running on a 4k tv and it looked awful, why they would set up a 900p game with no AA on a 4k tv for advertising is beyond me....
they said it looked incredible in handheld mode though.

Might be best to stick with a 1080p tv if possible or just play in handheld mode.
Otherwise it will be similar situation to playing twilight princess wii on a hdtv

the fuck are you talking about, breath of the wild was revealed on E3, not the game awards

WTF does that mean? Live demos are done all the time at E3?

Not our fault Nintendo recorded it using a camera not a capture device and had a correct setup for it to be shown.

Ouch. I'm almost regretting going 4k vs. 1080p for the new TV....

Never get caught up in graphics in early stuff.

That's a rookie mistake.

Gaming company's understand first impressions must have a huge effect on numbers so it's almost always fudged.

WHAT?

the poster said that breath of the wild was revealed when they showed someone play on a tv, i assume he is refering when aounuma and miyamoto showed it at the game awards, and thats not fucking true.

breath of the wild was revealed at E3

I'm my case I wonder how the game will look on my 25" 1440p monitor being 900p...

Wii U 720p games looked "fine", but then again 1440p is exactly the double of 720p, so it was pixel-perfect (I had my Wii U outputing at 720p for 720p games in order to achieve this pixel-perfect scaling). My Switch will be always set at 1080p output, so we'll see.

At least the console fucking supports full RGB range this time. I can't understand how the Wii U didn't support this.
