Was Breath of the Wild graphically downgraded?

Do you think Breath of the Wild was downgraded from the initial reveal?

I still don't get why they choose to make the game so desaturated compared to what we saw in the reveal :(
It's almost like the white balance in the game is wrong. I don't get why it looks the way it does.

Thats still pretty much my only worry in regards to the visuals, i have my fingers crossed that it really is due to location/time of day e.t.c.
If not i will have to adjust my tv for the first time in a very long time in order to try and fix the washed out visuals.
I want my vivid colours back!

The only major differences I see between final switch footage and what was shown.

1. Resolution
2. Draw distance
3. Removal of then painterly lighting effect.

Aside from some IQ issues, I don't think the "downgrade" is as significant as people make it out to be:

I think all games that are shown off too early in development get downgraded. What you get are more so like target renders than actual game play. Maybe that's why a lot of games now a days try to have quick announcements only a few months before release to get out of mis representing the game.

Those screens didn't support your claim at all...

I love the look of the game, but the IQ and asset density are crap compared to the reveal.

I can believe that we're looking at a Halo 2 situation here, rather than a target render. We could have been looking at a vertical slice. We see one large open area, and one smaller area with a fight in it. Who knows whether the engine could have coped with link visiting those distant areas. Who knows whether it could have coped with the numerous effects that the game now can (like grass catching fire, etc).

As you build your systems, sometimes you have to cut graphics back to accommodate them.

Either way, yes, it's graphically not as impressive as that reveal trailer. But there's way more going on in the world now.

Man watching the original trailer made me realise this game was meant to be out in 2015....thats a crazy delay for a downgrade. Still easily my most anticipated game of all time though. Cant ever remember being this excited about 1 game.

I don't see how you can deny that the initial target render was obviously downgraded to fit the real specs of the machine. I mean, there's not a single bit of aliasing in the E3 2014 trailer. It's something Nintendo do sometimes : with Splatoon screenshots, for example.

Nintendo's screenshots/captures are terrible. Everything is washed out.

Look at this: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=jJSDZkOK0so

That's from June. Not washed out at all.

That off screen looks so saturated due to the TV's calibration. The game looks less washed out when certain weather happens in the game though, when I got to play it, even on the switch's screen it looked far more colourful than some of the screenshots Nintendo have released.

Let it be known, that while I voted for the Yeah, sure, but who cares, that was years ago. You weirdo. option, it was entirely because I wanted to call the OP a weirdo and not because I believed in any other part of the option.

Some of the press shots from Nintendo of the wiiU version look a lot closer to the original version.

It's worth noting they are rendered at a MUCH higher resolution.

It's amazing what a simple res bump can do. Once you remove the resolution difference it basically looks identical to the original showing IMO.

? I stated it's not as significant as people make it out to be, as in, that screenshot comparison on the first page isn't particularly compelling, even if there are definitely IQ issues. I don't think asset density is that different either, it's just that most of the gameplay footage we've seen is of the opening area.

Would I prefer the look of the initial reveal exactly? Sure, but if they had to sacrifice some graphical fidelity for their physics engine, then I'm ok with that.

People keep bringing up how the game is washed out too, it's definitely a weather/lighting effect, one can tell by watching gameplay footage or seeing screenshots at different time of day:

Looks like a downgrade to me. Hard to believe the Wii U would have ever ran a game like this that looks like that.

But at least Nintendo has not been shy at all about showing it off. Very few people picking this game up on 3/3 will not know what the game looks like.

Yes.

Not to mention all the animals that are roaming around with their own habits and AI, that shit is not easy to program even on PS4 and Xbox One.

Maybe i'm late to the party on this. I never saw this video before today. Link takes a hit from a jumping attack that deals him 7.5 hearts of damage here: https://youtu.be/Na1cIOmfBlU?t=58s

However, it looks like he only loses 7 hearts, and loses another half heart from terrain damage since he fell down a small hill during knock back from the strike. Am I see things? Or a was this common knowledge that i just wasn't aware of?

ps: how do you hyperlink?

I think it was downgraded. I personally am not too bothered about it because I think the final result is aesthetically pleasing but I can see why some would be upset.

I was watching the original 2014 reveal today:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z6BeAtdoELY

And maybe that's just me, but the landscape looks less barren, the grass field looks lusher, smoke effects pack more "punch" and even Link's character seems more detailed.

I'm trying to avoid spoilers before playing the game, and maybe that's just a different area than the one shown in the latest previews, or are we set for a small disappointment in this regard?

In fact, maybe that's just me, but if there's one small criticism that always comes to my mind when briefly looking at recent footage is how Hyrule looks so... empty? Can't say I'm a fan of the whole "big open world" concept if there's not much to see, but then again, that's just my personal impression from a few images and videos.

Comments?
Who said that reveal trailer was gameplay?

Makes me sad watching the Wii U version on those YouTube clips, knowing they axed the map to make the switch version more appealing.

I called it back when Nintendo showed off the very first gameplay reveal after the cinematic teaser. The portions of the map Link was running around in weren't nearly as detailed.

What we have now has certainly progressed from the actual gameplay video back then, but no doubt the original teaser was a target render made to look like real gameplay. Other companies do this and get called out for it. I believe this is the first time Nintendo's done this and they shouldn't be immune to the same criticisms other developers/publishers receive.

In the end its down to the individual whether this really upsets you or not.

Lol its hilarious that some people give nintendo a pass while companies like ubisoft develop the worst types of reputations for this type of thing. I dont personally care and i understand why companies do it.. I also think BoTW still looks great despite that 2014 trailer looking slighty more polished.

The game still looks fantastic so why not?
I also gave Witcher 3 a pass since it sill looked awesome after the downgrade.

Yeah you wouldn't believe what a huge Nintendo fanboy I am. Omg.

I don't know how you guys put up with this shit. I've been on GAF for 20+ years (registered for less obviously) and it has gotten really bad. The bias and agendas are overwhelming. Is it Russian bots or something? How do we help people see things objectively?

It still looks great in person on the switch except for the jaggies. Really wish they would have put in some sort of AA on the switch.

Edit apparently they were using 4k TVs at the tour event so maybe it looks better on a 1080p tv. Did look really great on the switch screen in handheld mode.

Obviously, but there are bery few games that dont have their visuals "downgraded" in the years after the first trailer. Think of it this way, a console is only capable of so much, especially the switch and wii u. The choice at nintendo likely was you either got that version of the not running great. Or something with less detail and toned down vfx running far better. Yeah it sucks that publishers still feel the need to show unrealistic first trailers, but the "downgrading" were talking about is really just optimization.

Yeah, that's the physics, if you get sent reeling, you can take bonus damage.

The Switch has brought out the worst in GAF and I don't know why

Of course it was. The original reveal would only be feasible if they cut the world size down. The game still has a far better artstyle than any open world game I've seen. Far Cry 2 still remains the king of open world realistic looking artstyled games with its no-HUD and immediate immersive expansiveness.

Your post has too many words. How would you score the open world artstyle of BotW?
