Was Breath of the Wild graphically downgraded?

Do you think Breath of the Wild was downgraded from the initial reveal?

Didn't Nintendo release bullshots of this game and Skyward Sword? I think there was 4k "screenshots" of BoTW and 1080p shots of SS. Might be wrong.

While I anticipate things will not live up to the initial in engine stuff people are also going well out of our way to compare different scenes not even in the same areas and screaming downgrade. Not every single area of the game needs 10 million blades of grass on the screen.

They have kept us in the same small region for the last 2 years. Small teases of areas outside the plateau certainly show lots of grass etc. Running out of the initial cave all the grass is there then for some reason which could be artistic or otherwise it changes at the edge of the cliff.

Seems like we should wait until we can actually compare shots across areas teased to start the torches and pitchforks

Watching the original trailer again it does appear that the models and lightning have taken a hit though, beyond the lower levels of foliage in the areas shown in the more recent videos.

The original doesn't look like a CG movie though, Nintendo may have realized later that the game simply couldn't run at that level of detail and scope on the Wii U.

Not to sound morbid, but hopefully nintendo keeps screwing up so that one day I can play zelda/mario on a PS4. These folks are so behind the times and whats considered relevant.

Your post is so far behind the times and what's considered relevant especially with regard to this thread.

You'll last long here, junior.

The 4K screenshots were in a folder labelled 'artwork' while the actual screenshots (1280*720) were in a folder labelled 'screenshots'. They were being upfront about what the higher resolution shots were. Skyward Sword was just a mixed bag between ingame and high resolution.

You also have to take into consideration that the original E3 trailer was before they incorporated their physics system, which supposedly led to the delay because they came up with all sorts of new ideas. Its possible the graphics needed to be downgraded a bit to accommodate the new physics engine and ideas, and that without it the game could have been closer to the original trailer.

Oh yeah, that's a downgrade indeed. But at least the game had been shown off honestly for over a year now. It's no big deal if graphics can't match a reveal for whatever reason... It is a big deal if accurate footage isn't shown off until just before release (see Dark Souls 2)

I don't think that the original videos and images were bullshots. I think they represented the look of the game that Nintendo was targeting, but they had to make optimizations and changes during their development cycle. Also, they may have downgraded a few areas to accommodate the handheld mode for the switch. Overall, I think the final look of the game is pretty close to what they initially showed off. It looks like they improved the draw distance on the LOD system while dropping out the detail on the grass to compensate for performance issues that could happen when there are two many overlapping transparent objects on screen at once.

.

Pretty unfair comparison between press cutscene and cherry picked screenshot with no view of the horizon.

You could probably take just about any game and do this.

With that said, the E3 2014 cutscene clearly looks better. But that's almost to be expected these days. They have had to make optimizations and compromises to allow for more NPCs, animals, physics, enemies on screen. So, who really knows.

Pretty sure it is.

No surprise that a "hope Nintendo fails so I get Zelda on PS4" guy is also spouting Eric Trump bullshit in another thread: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?p=230686153#post230686153

If I had a bowl of 1,000 skittles and told you probably 20 of the are poisonous and 1 of them is defiantly poisonous would you take one?

It's very clearly a downgrade. But it still looks good, so no real harm. No way that was in game on the Wii U, though.

An intelligent and thoughtful response - I like it. I like it a lot.

Another shot from e3 2016, still blurry as hell, but looks a lot better than that shitty image someone put together that keeps getting shared around.

Totally an ALT account Taken from the OT.

Can mods please ban this trash posting.

http://www.newsweek.com/how-isis-smuggles-terrorists-among-syrian-refugees-453039

Isis is exploiting our refugee program, and sadly that one kid in class has to ruin the pizza party for everyone else. If I had a bowl of 1,000 skittles and told you probably 20 of the are poisonous and 1 of them is defiantly poisonous would you take one? Im not saying syrians are skittles. Im just saying the bully (ISIS) literally has told us multiple times (especially in the summer 16) they would invade Europe and America by utilizing their refugee programs! you have the bully literally telling you how its going to attack YOU!

and im sorry for all the victims of 9/11 but that event almost happened 2 decades ago. Im sorry but we don't have the same enemy we did then, now. So could the media get over those countrys

Hope I dont get banned from Gaf for all this, and im sorry if some people feel im ignorant or whatever.

I do not understand why my claim is so off. As technology takes more lower class Americans jobs what are they going to do for work? The more people utilizing the social programs this government provides the more votes for the left. You have the entire shipping industry going to be programmed, you have fast food restaurants having 2 people operate them (already trials in Canada.) You have amazons self running grocery open in Washington. I understand why some may say this doesn't have anything to do with the topic, but it really does. If you guys look at where we are headed you never have to worry about another Donald Trump, and this is someone who voted for him saying this. Its to late hes president. You really cant fuck up an entire system in 4 years. Ill give you 8 to get some serious damage. Sorry people may call me a bigot or ignorant, but I don't understand the peoples fears! Our future is looking very very Blue.

Guys. Trump isn't really that bad. If you had the blonde bitch in office the other half of America would be bitching. Plus with years of protest and no change, do you really think anything is going to happen? With technology taking over jobs the next decade and more minimum wage employees being replaced with robots (service/freight/goods/ industry) Do you REALLY think we will EVER have a Republican president? NO we will be a democratic country! so could everyone shut up and sit still for the next 4 years, and realize this is the last republican in office for a long time.

People saying the 2014 version looked better ... y'all always use the 1080p promotional bullshots that were released , rather then footage from the ACTUAL video... if you watch the actual trailer -

- The draw distance sucks , everything in the distance looks like modeld clay ( compare the volcano area then to the imposing , morodor looking volcanoe we have now...)

-There is no interactivity between the horse and the grass. It doesn't bend and react the way it does now. If you look closely after the first laser is shot , you can see peons run thru the grass and it stiffly doesn't move.

- There is a shit ton of BLOOM all over the place , especially noticeable when link jumps Into the air .

-color correction isn't as good , everything in the woods had an ugly brown haze to it.

-Links skin tone was almost Simpsons yellow.

The only thing I really see is that this was a designed and staged hyrule setting . The rocks , flowers , trees , all placed in a visually pleasing way..the landscape however , It's so much flatter in this image then the final hyrule we are getting . The topography is so much more varied and there is so much more to see.

I'm actually more concerned with the downgrades being discussed in the Wii U and Switch differences thread. Hopefully that's just an old build.

Not sure. It doesn't look good enough either way if i'm completely honest.
But i'll try to enjoy it even if the iQ is horrible.
I hope the jaggies are less noticeable on the Switch screen

The most noticible change over the years is the grass and how much of it is on screen, it's been dialed back, I don't mind too much but it is a shame to go from some really cool looking grass to more standard stuff we see in games every day.

I'll mostly play it handheld (in my bed. For me switch is an insanely powerful handheld ). As such it will be amazing looking

Video we have now of tall grass and plains in the final version can be found here and here.

the E3 reveal video still looked a lot nicer. I tried to figure out why, and the big difference seems to be lightning and colors. The E3 video has brighter colors, a stronger contrast and the various patches of grass have different color values and shades. Also, a lot more flowers. A lot of work probably went into making everything look pretty

Man, watching the new trailer... I'm going to actually have to put in my vote.

Looks pretty darn bad. :/

Will hopefully look better with a PC emulator. Might have to just wait to pick it up till it's confirmed working perfectly.

Yes, it's had a significant downgrade over the years, although the newer switch screens are starting to look better. Shame about the Wii U version though considering the game was used to push consoles right up until the Switch was announced, now it's the downgraded inferior version.

I'd go as far as saying the art style is inconsistent now compared to both the first trailer & previous entries like Wind Waker & Skyward Sword.
I like the idea of the art style but the execution is all over the place, the man made meshes & grass look good but the terrain clashes with link, other characters & various assets quite a lot.
Link is toon shaded consisting of mostly solid colours, the terrain & trees are supposed to be hand painted with detail but the resolution of the textures has dropped to the point where the style is lost. Now they have too much visual information to match the cartoon look similar to the characters, but not enough to have the detailed hand painted look they're supposed to, they just look like low res realistic textures with a shader slapped on. It wouldn't be a problem if the game wasn't primarily terrain & trees, or the density of good looking foliage hiding this hadn't been reduced. Obviously this is just my opinion, but Nintendo's execution on the final product has completely missed the art style they were going for in the reveal trailer & concept work. It can look cartoony, low res or hand painted with detail depending on the asset or area, but it's definitely not consistent across the open world, mainly due to the downgrades in texture quality & asset density, also the image quality is horrible. I've never had this problem with other Zelda's, their art style has generally been consistent across the board with texture quality, shading & style etc.

Where does it look bad? Really...where?

Everyone who played it says it looks great. Nearly every journalist says it looks great/good.
I just wanna know what it is what makes people say that? (I mean obviously we have even people telling us Horizon looks bad...)

Maybe it's actually better than that trailer shows because god damn.

I'll be seeing it for myself hopefully in a few days at the london showing. I'd like to get it at launch.

I wonder if they used the wiiu version to make that trailer or something. If that's the case... I'll definitely be using my copy on pc.

it looks downgraded but so what

witcher 3 was downgraded too and most people love that game

most people will probably love botw too

Honestly, the assets in the original reveal trailer never looked all that great to begin with. It was just a real surprise to see the results alongside everything else on Wii U.

You can tell the real-world performance is different than the original footage, of course, but I wouldn't say the visuals have taken a significant hit.
