Week-Long 1up Ridge Racer 7 Cover Story (PANTS DAMAGE WARNING)

woohoo and I'm at home on lunch break with my much higher bandwith than work!

The lack of dynamic lighting and shadowing on the car is disappointing, and so is the lack of opponents in the video. The environments look great though. This is going to look really nice in 60FPS.

Yeah, not working for me either. Nor the entire website.

I'm beginning to think someone needs to tear gamevideos down and just start from scratch with it :lol

Not a bad video, but geez only the players car on the track, and NO shadowing... booooo.

You know I've gotta say this now because I can't understand why racing games keep missing this.

With the increase in horsepower I'm glad that newer racing games are featuring increase background details, and increased car details, blah, blah, blah... BUT... what in the HELL is deal with so many of those details still being so f'n static? Look at the Ridge Racers, they've always had running water on certain tracks, and the occasionaly fly by of something in the air, and yeah led signs that change... thrilling.... what about MOVING friggin trees?!??! You know if there's something that I really like about Most Wanted even on the PS2 is that the trees sway, I don't know about you but it just helps me feel more like the environment is alive.... hell even the addition of functional street lights that AI traffic adheres to (in games where it makes sense to do that) helps.... but I'm tired of just this graphical background increase that's still just a static environment.... liven that shit up for chrissakes.

Video is OK, seems more like replay mode than gameplay (no HUD). My only concern with this game is that it will have the same lifelessness in the environments as RR6 and it seems it will from the video. Still looking forward to it.

EDIT: DarienA, I agree with what you said, I wish the environments were more dynamic, it's the same problem that RR6 had IMO.

cant get the website or video links to work :/

edit: works now...
doesnt look bad, but I guess I have to see it in a higher res to get a better idea.

Wow, you people are picky. It's an early, launch piece of software. What did you expect? It's not perfect...but it is 60 fps delicious (and Ridge Racer delicious). The new environments are the awesome part imo.

WTF. 1up said "first gameplay videos" coming on friday. I want a gameplay video, not ONE DAMN CAR racing alone and with no ****ing shadow ><

Looks really good to me as a fan of the Ridge Racer series though I reckon i'm not objective at all... :p

Yeah It lacks of shadowing but still It looks really good to me.

EDIT: Oh yeah one thing I really agree is the lifeless environment. But i guess this is common to a lot of racing games no? Hope this will be fixed during this era.

At the expense of losing 60fps...? No thanks. That's where PGR3 ****ed up, and the environs are still static as hell.

the downloadable higher res version looks a lot better than the small one imo
great sense of speed and very smooth
but the replay of a time trial lap or so is somewhat unexciting heh

I just have a feeling this is going to sell pretty badly :(

I hope whoever of you picks up a ps3 this fall(not me sorry) also picks up this game. :)

Um, they did show footage from the 1st person perspective. And it is fast as hell.

Edit: doh, you edited your original comment.

LOL I was like "damn it, no 1st/3rd person perspective" while typing that message. Then it came towards the end and I was in a hurry to edit before I was caught :lol

The site is too slow. Seriosuly, gamevideos should take a couple of lessons from playside.

Blimblim, is there any problem for you to mirror the videos or is somewhat illegal to do so?

Damn RR7 is the only launch/launch window game I want. All these shots and footage are just sexy.Gonna be painful waiting for the system to get some worthwhile stuff so I can finally pick it up.

Uh if the environments are still static then that's not what I'm saying.

And it's not just Ridge that suffers from this, most racing games do.

it looks pretty good. won't turn many heads that aren't already turned though. It looks like Ridge Racer, which is still very niche...and imo dated, but maybe this will be different.

They certainly don't handle the same little volume of bandwidth as me, not comparable at all.
As far being illegal, I don't know, but I sure wouldn't mirror another's site exclusive content without any *really* good reason. And the only I see is that site to be down or simply unreachable, like ruliweb can be when they get some very popular videos.
Anyway, back to the topic. I can't say I'm really impressed with RR7. Considering they had one full year of dev time to improve on the RR6 fundation, with a better hardware too, I'm really surprised we still get the same flat lighting and shadowing. Yes the environment are quite more detailed, but if there is one game I could point as being an old gen game only with better textures/models/environments this would be it.
I'm sorry Namco, but there is no excuse for still using this type of shadowing on the cars with such a powerhouse like PS3. 60 fps or not. It's time for you guys to start learning how to use shaders! I don't care about bump mapping, HDR or whatever is the current effect everyone has to put in their game, but such old tech lighting and shadowing is not acceptable anymore.
Yeah I'm a graphics whore, sue me :D

I think it looks fantastic, but I don't think it loks any better than, or really any different than RR6. The trees look nicer. What am I missing?

That video has seriously hurt my interest in this game.

I think just having 1 car on track hurt it alot. Because it just comes off looking really bland and uinteresting in that video. The tracks are really wide so when all the cars on track hopefully it'll look more interesting than that. And when they actually change the nasty drifting system with some customization.
