Never understood how Lufia 2 somehow stood above the late SNES glut of RPGs as a standout game and never got a true sequel.

Lufia 2 (with FF6, CT and DKC2, IMO) might be the best SNES. The fact that it only got a few shitty half assed portable sequels never sat well with me.
