What do you want most from next gen?

-Fun games
-No long cutscenes
-No stupid and unskippable tutorials
-No forced achievements (let the developers do whatever they want with that subject)
-No hollywood wannabe stories (if they want professional stories, hire professional writers)
-No DRM
-No long loading times

so, I guess I'll mostly use handhelds and play indie games this gen.

New (deeper) methods of gameplay.

You know that feeling in RE4 when you realized you could jump out a window, barricade doors, knock down ladders, and basically play the game how you wanted? And when you talked to people, everyone played that village segment differently; some people barricaded themselves in a building, some people played it like a circle-strafing FPS, some people climbed the bell tower and dropped grenades; some people saw the chainsaw guy while others didn't. I want that to be the baseline next gen.

720p @ 60fps and bigger online battles.

(Don't make me post the chart that proves the normal person with a normal TV, sitting at a normal distance cannot tell 720p vs 1080p :) )

720 target would make it easier to hit 60fps, would you rather have 1080 @ 30 or 720 at 60??

yea, i'd rather have 720p/60fps. because i have a 720p TV :P

More buttons, every time I touch a console game I'm reminded of how crippled the controls and menus are because there are way too few buttons, even two more would help...

60 fps and low input lag and even frametimes, these are a basic requirement for gameplay

short loading times (should be covered with all that ram)

NO SCALING, it fucking shits on the image quality

That's about it.

Better AI (this is what I want the most)

Less loading times especially with UI.

New IP

More JRPG's on console.

60 FPS for games that need it, action games / fps games.

Less modern military more sci fi / fantasy.

Clean image quality, 1080p, 30 or 60 fps locked, the dead of first person shooters, the revival of third person 3D platformers, more experimental games etc...

i wanna just be able to yell from my room "XBOX DOWNLOAD SONIC DEMO" while it's off and in 15 minutes it'll yell back "DEMO DOWNLOADED AND INSTALLED, WOULD YOU LIKE TO PLAY". yes xbox, thanks for asking

that's kinda similar to OP but i really don't care about boot times, install, or patch times. i never sit around and wait for them anyways. Wii U is useful because i can just bring the controller around and do this stuff. i want that on the xbox/ps4 basically. i also want to be able to yell at my console

You guys said most of the stuff already, but what I want most are the colors. Playfullness and creating something less real than what we have now.

After using it in person, Oculus Rift support is number one. The Classic RPG revival with Wasteland 2/Project Eternity/Torment is a close second.

My main wants:

Rock solid frame-rates; no lower than 30
No screen tearing
No jaggies
All games are at least above 720p

I want a wide variety of games, in a wide variety of styles and genres, made and marketed on budgets that can be successfully recouped on sales totals of 1,000,000, 500,000, 200,000 and even 50,000, both in the full-price retail space and through downloadable channels.

... I get the feeling I'll be sitting this one out.

No more jaggies - Smoke that doesn't leak through walls, builds up - 1080p - Unlimited draw distance - Better explosions - Crowds in sports games that look real - More realistic physics - Dynamic A.I. - Better looking trees & grass - Etc etc

Really fucking crazy looking environments.... and further refinement in open world gameplay as there is currently a ton of room for improvement

A new Quake game with multiplayer as good or better
not possible
than Q3A.

Better hit detection and animation. It bugs me that even with all the fancy shader effects and volumetric lighting that can be produced, you still get characters hands clipping through their face/items they interact with/whatever.

The same thing i wanted from every gen: Better graphics.

It sounds shallow, but i do not care. I am tired of the Unreal Engine 3 "look" that so many games have (because that engine is so popular). I just want to be wowed

Do not mind innovative or new games, if they appear ill check them out, but i know what i want, and i just want it to look better

Also, more realistic enemy reactions to getting shot.

I want good games , better graphics with smooth fps . I want genre defining TPS like Gears of War 1 again ,, multiplayer like Halo3 again , , more games with the standard of Dark/Demon Souls .... and finally , higher standard JRPG . Of course it would be awesome if Final Fantasy becomes like Final Fantasy again , if only FF 13 Versus will be FF15 hopefully .

However with :

Dark Souls 2 , The Evil Within , CyberPunk , Witcher 3 etc coming , I'm actually quite excited to look forward to game again , next gen or not . It's the games that matter .

Also, more realistic enemy reactions to getting shot.

Why would you want this? Do you have any idea what a realistic reaction to getting shot looks like? It's pretty fucking horrifying.

If anything, I want less violence going forward. There's a knife assassination animation in BF3 where the guy basically crawls up in a fetal position. It makes me feel really uncomfortable about where video games are heading in this department.

If they do that, maybe you will take the stealthy approach instead of guns blazing. Seems like a good motivator to avoid violence, a conscience.

Graphical:

  • Mitigation in jarring object LoD transition
  • Object pop-in
  • AF
  • Decent AA
  • Less clipping
  • Usage tessellation as a panacea instead of being superfluous icing on the cake
  • Stable frame rate (30fps at the least)
General:

  • For developers not betray their fans by changing the very game design philosophy that earned them success in hopes of unrealistic amount of growth
  • More WRPGs
  • With better graphical fidelity, the prominence of ludonarrative dissonance will keep on increasing if game designers fail to address situations that give rise to them via logical justifications
  • Also, Auto-regenerating health should be a no-go unless logically justified

- reasonably priced games - cheaper digital than retail
- immediacy on all aspects of the console: loading a game or going on the store etc..
- i hope they won't hide the most interesting features behind a paywall, so online play for free obviously
- a demo for every or most games (i know the studios can't always do it/afford it or even some games like dark souls for example are hard or impossible to demo)

More MMOs on consoles.
More variety, even among games in the same genre. Every FPS now is way too CoD influenced, even something like Halo that did not need to do something like that get sales because it sold plenty well already.
Return of quality Japanese developed games on HD consoles. I know there are still some, but they're rare.
More quality first-party games from all three of the console makers, the systems need reasons to standout besides features and specs.

If games are going to move into a more narrative space then they'll need better writers. I stopped playing so many games this gen because they put so much focus on the story and it almost always comes up short.

Also I want to be able to change my PSN name. Sony needs to get its shit together with that.

Games to never ever drop below 30 fps, and all games at 1080p. 1080p 60fps would be great but it won't happen

Also new IPs and less of the CoD/Uncharted types of campaigns. Stop holding my damn hand
