What gaming system did you look most forward to?

Most Nintendo systems post SNES.

Dreamcast.

That's it.

While I like PS systems, you know what you're getting so it's almost like an expected upgrade.

PSVR looks cool tho. Excited for it myself but waiting on the Pro.

Probably the SNES. I had the C64, Amiga and PC before but the SNES was to be my first actual console. I was super hyped to finally get a full taste of Nintendo's IP's.

Plus it's the only real time when I was a young kid. Everything afterwards I was an adult so the hype factor was never the same.

Probably the 32X. That hype. My youth. It was the perfext combo (which was broken)

Super Nintendo or PS2. With the first, I entered every fricking magazine contest that offered it as a prize and begged my parents for over a year to get it. To my shame, I got it the same Christmas I got my first puppy, and ended up playing with the SNES more. And now I've just made myself sad again.

As for the PS2, I pre-ordered that thing more than a year in advance. I was super excited for it based off the success of the PS1 alone, but then came reports about hardware shortages and how everyone and their brother was desperate to get their hands on it, but my system was secured for day one. "Fuck you, got mine" is a very powerful sentiment.

Oddly enough, the Wii U. I thought it was going to be a resounding return to form for Nintendo, and the idea of a console with a tablet controller was intriguing - even for non-game activities.

Well I was let down by it when it launched, but I did eventually pick one up and enjoyed my year-or-so with it.

As a kid it was easily the Nintendo 'Ultra 64', I remember reading GameFans news and speculation sections in the back of the mag each month about it and just drooling over the overly optimistic stuff they put in there lol.

The system obviously still turned out to be fantastic but the rebranding to N64, change of the cool grey and purple color scheme and lack of titles like KI, FF, Robotech, etc that were talked about as launch titles but never came out certainly killed some of its cool factor to my young self.

Probably the Wii. Going off the GameCube which I adored the promise of a system that could play everything from NES to current gen was so exciting. It looked sleek and was so small.

Unfortunately it turned out to be one of the most disappointing systems I've owned. It had so much potential though.

Wii no jokes, Enjoyed the gamecube so much and with Twilight Princess on the way and a couple of other cool games 11 year old me was really excited.

Also still is my favorite gaming system ever and i still have to play super paper mario and both galaxy games i honestly don't know how i never got those earlier.

The PS2. After hearing that's where MGS and Final Fantasy would be going after the PS, and given MGS1 and FFIX are two of my favourite games growing up, I don't remember ever feeling more excited in getting a console, I haven't felt like that since either for that matter.

Wii by far. It's the only one I've preordered and picked up on launch day. I was champing at the bit as we rolled into that weekend and when I finally got my hands on it, I half felt I was dreaming. So much good times.

This thing...

I was the biggest PSP fanboy ever.
When it came out, i started reading reviews like crazy because I wanted to buy one. However, at that time I had just broken up with my ex and spent all my money on parties, booze and ps3 games. When the "im single wooo" phase waned a bit, I bought a
(my first)
brand new car and didn't have enough money for the vita. But when I finally did... it was too late. The system was dead...

The wii because it had snake in smash.
Not even joking, that one inclusion was all I needed.
Yeah it was after the fact, but damn I don't care.

Over all of the years, I think it was the N64 where my hype was at critical mass. It was also the first console I bought for myself.

Same here. Well, actually my parents ended up paying the taxes for me I think. 11 year old me only had $250 to his name. Nothing will ever match booting up Mario 64 for the first time, I think. I followed it's development from the "Project Reality" days. I used to drool over the pics of Top Gear Rally in one of my Game Players issues.

I was hyped for the NINTENDO REVOLUTION.

Don't get me wrong, I was still hyped when it was fully announced as the Wii, but before then I was really caught up in the mystique of what the new console looked like, what it would do, and how it would revolutionize gaming. It was fun to see all the speculation and fan-made mockups on the Internet, even if practically all of them were completely off target.

Had to be the Dreamcast for me. I was the only one of my friends that was interested in it. Watched every preview for every game, watched every ad for the console itself, was obsessed with the whole "9.9.99", "It's Thinking" marketing...

I ended up getting Soul Calibur, Sonic Adventure, Ready 2 Rumble, NFL 2K, and Blue Stinger at launch. I still remember the employee at Software Etc (now Gamestop) complimenting me on my choice of games. I was very proud of that. What a great time. I was 12 or 13 when it came out so it was that perfect age for hype.

I also lined up for 12+ hours for the Xbox 360 and the Wii, which were great memories in and of themselves, but nothing can compare to the hype I felt for the Dreamcast.

SNES.

I was such a "Nintendo" kid growing up. Nintendo Power had me and my brother hyped for it, and we even rented the system a few times from a local place that wasn't too far up the road.

We both committed to saving for it, so we did all the chores we could and I did extra work in the chicken houses (bro couldn't, dust allergy). When we went to K-Mart (maybe it was Ames...little foggy on that point) to get it, my old man patted us on the back, and told us that this was ours because we earned it.

Got Contra 3 that day too. Man, was I satisfied with that thing. Still have it, still hooked up in my little office/nerd room hybrid, and still fire it up from time to time on an old 13 inch CRT I have in the entertainment center. Had to fuck around with shelving to make it fit, but man...it's like I'm a kid again when I fire it up.

It had to have been the Xbox 360. I was 14 when it came out, Halo was the only thing I could think about at any given moment, and 100% of my friends were on board which made the whole thing even sweeter. I mowed lawns and cleaned my dad's office all summer and ended up having upwards of $800 at launch. I got the premium box, extra controller, memory card, Call of Duty 2, Kameo; EOP, Amped 3, and Need for Speed: Most Wanted. It was amazing.

Wii, The speculation , controller being revealed, all the game possibilities. Went to the midnight launch with my cousin and it was the same day I had a early morning flight to go on vacation with family, played wii Sports and Zelda till morning it was an amazing day.. to bad support fizzled towards the end

NX, fam. Can't wait for the PS4 Pro but...NX is fresh, new and launches with a new Zelda game.

Didn't read properly, oh my. Historically, I'd say it was the PS4 or Wii.

Super NES. I remember cutting out every scrap of news, preview, or early screenshot from all the EGMs, GamePros, and other mags that I had and creating a large scrapbook of sorts that I could read over and over again at school. As a kid with little money, I couldn't afford to waste time with Genesis or TG16 when the SNES was on the way, but seeing those Genny and TG games for years at Toys R' Us really made the wait difficult. I was getting the system for Christmas so I bought Actraiser with my saved allowance money and read through the manual dozens of times. When I finally played it and heard the sampled trumpets from Yuzo Koshiro's opening score for the first time, I knew the wait was worth it.

Dreamcast and N64 are probably tied for 2nd place. I was really looking forward to both but I was a bit older then so hype never quite reached SNES levels again.

Either the N64 or Xbox. Japanese N64 with Mario 64/Goldeneye/Mario Kart 64 with my own money.

US Xbox with Halo/Fusion Frenzy with 4 Controllers import fee was 700$ lol

Oddly enough, even though N64 was my most anticipated console of all time, the Wii was my favorite console by FAR even though I didn't even plan on grabbing one.

I bought it so completely randomly one day and totally fell in love with this hobby all over again like I did with the NES. The Wii did more for my love of videogames (other than the NES) than any other piece of hardware ever made.

Playstation 2.

I was... obsessed.

It was the perfect age for me. Was old enough to have my first job, but was still in high school and so I had tons of time. So I had enough money to buy one. Didn't have my license yet so I couldn't really go anywhere or do anything. Also was the first console announcement where I was fully into internet communities to chat about videogames. I had 2 videogame maagzine subscriptions too (NextGen and PSN) and they endlessly covered the PS2. I was also really into Madden by the end of the PSX era, so when those first reveals of Madden 2001 came out, I damn near lost it.

I was obsessed with this console for months, and then the shipment issues started. I had it pre-ordered but it still until February or March for me to get it that year because the shipments were so late. I had a poster on my wall that I'd look at all the time of just the damn console. I almost bought one on Ebay for like $800 when it came out but my parents talked me out of it. I had saved up about $1,000 that summer from working. I was glad they talked me out of that.

Probably Dreamcast.

Does VR count though? Because the arrival of the Rift DK1, Rift DK2, and Vive all involved some adult-acting-like-a-child excitement.

SNES. I got it the same year DKC and Killer Instinct came out for Christmas. My brain almost broke in the week before Christmas Eve, I was so excited.

Dreamcast is a close second. I was working at Sears at the time so pre-ordering and getting my hands on one at launch was easy. The hardest part was getting home with a handful of games and learning that about half of them wouldn't boot thanks to some fuck up at the disc manufacturing facility. You had to try about a dozen times before they'd even think about starting.

The Wii is also close. Camped out at Wal-Mart for 18 hours with some friends to get one, and when I finally got home with mine I played Twilight Princess until I passed out around 4 a.m.

Nintendo 64. Anyone who was gaming at that time had their mind exploded by Mario 64 and killer instinct was blowing up in the arcades at the time. Rogue squadron was also totally amazing. Nothing compares for me. I was insanely hyped for ps2/3/&4 but Mario 64 was like a pivotal moment in time that made me realize what games could be.

PSP. I printed a countdown calendar for it and stuck it on my wall. It didn't help that UA release was March and we didn't get it in Europe until September.

The Wii. My hype got inflated for it because I could never find a store that had one in stock. I had to wait until Black Friday 2007 before I can finally get my hands on one. That definitely built up some expectations.

Over all of the years, I think it was the N64 where my hype was at critical mass. It was also the first console I bought for myself.
Ultra 64 hype was intense.

But then again, the Dreamcast hype blew me away as well. I remember reading this EGM about 25 times deciding if I want to buy the Dreamcast or not.

The PS2 also had pretty crazy hype due to the "Emotion Engine" CPU.

Never been much of a early console adopter being a mainly a PC gamer since the 90s but while at university this came out and I couldn't get it fast enough.
I still have it too and it still works. I have lost my 3.5mil jack adapter though

PlayStation 2. If there's a word that means more than hype, then that's what I was.

Believe it or not, Christmas 2005 I walked in on my uncles playing NBA 2K6. I'm like cool, then I notice this white box on the floor like "wtf is this!?" Instant hype for the 360 without hearing of it prior.
